Islam › Would Prophet Muhammad Have Supported Boko Haram And Their Likes? by deols(op): 7:57pm On Dec 30, 2011
The Holy Prophet Muhammad, may peace be on him, was the greatest pioneer of religious freedom and tolerance. When we say it, we literally mean it, for it would take history more than 1000 years to produce anything, remotely equal, in generosity and tolerance, to the covenant that he gave to the Christian monks of Mount Sinai as well as to those from Najran and to the Christians in general. By the grace of Allah we have found the complete record of the Covenant in Christian source.

Prophet Muhammad's Convenant with Xtians: "This is a message from Muhammad ibn Abdullah, as a covenant to those who adopt Christianity, near and far, we are with them.

Verily I, the servants, the helpers, and my followers defend them, because Christians are my citizens; and by God! I hold out against anything that displeases them.

No compulsion is to be on them. Neither are their judges to be removed from their jobs nor their monks from their monasteries.

No one is to destroy a house of their religion, to damage it, or to carry anything from it to the Muslims' houses. Should anyone take any of these, he would spoil God's covenant and disobey His Prophet.

Verily, they are my allies and have my secure charter against all that they hate. No one is to force them to travel or to oblige them to fight.

The Muslims are to fight for them. If a female Christian is married to a Muslim, it is not to take place without her approval. She is not to be prevented from visiting her church to pray.

Their churches are to be respected.
They are neither to be prevented from repairing them nor the sacredness of their covenants.

No one of the nation (Muslims) is to disobey the covenant till the Last Day (end of the world)."

*NB: In 628 AD, a delegation from St. Catherine's Monastery came to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and requested his protection. He responded by granting them the following charter of rights. St. Catherine's Monastery is located at the foot of Mt. Sinai in modern-day Egypt and is the world's oldest monastery. It possesses a huge collection of Christian manuscripts, second only to the Vatican, and is a world heritage site. It also boasts the oldest collection of Christian icons. It is a treasure house of Christian history that has remained safe for 1,400 years under Muslim protection.

u av come again. well, whenever anything gets controversial, u'd agree the best thing is to leave it abi??

there are many hadiths against the use of musical instruments. It sure doesnt fall under things that come up wv civilization especially when it was condemned by d prophet himself.

Scholars do make mistakes and they make it knwn in their various works that when we find out at later times that they've been wrong, we should leave what they said and go for what the prophet said.

hayorbaami:
This is the problem Muslims face when they do not understand their religion. There is nothing like Mutah.
Islamically, to make a valid marriage dere must be 5 things present.1) offer 2)Acceptance 3)Guardian(father or any oda person) 4) dowry 5) witnesses
Where any of these fails, that marriage is void. The father is very important in marriage and his consent is to the marriage is important. Anything short of this is zina. So there was no marriage after all but fornication.
thank u o my sister. what is right can be almost obvious all d time. To think that some Nigerians bought this idea some time ago is sickening. I heard one particular lady who had mutah with some guys was later left wv none of them ready to marry her.

As to their level of religion, well i think the fact that they brought islam to europe, speaks for itself, so i dont think one should assume they werent devoted enough just because they introduced a musical style which took root and grew.

Islam › Re: My Dressing As A Muslim by deols(f): 8:23am On Dec 29, 2011
Hmmmn, thanks for this thread. I like it so much.

Dressing the right way(with the perfect hijab) should not be compromised because it is a commandment. Allah says in the Qur'an-

. . .draw their headcovers over their necks and bosoms and not reveal their adornment . .(read more suratunnur,24 vs 31)

'O Prophet, Tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to draw their outer garments about themselves (when they go out). That is better so that they may be recognised and not molested. And Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.' [Al-Ahzaab, 33:59]

Scash:
Normally, sans religion, your dressing should depict who you are and how wish to be addressed. Dressing moderately is the starting point, but how about dressing the way we ought to as muslims? Its not one easy task, wearing an hijab that covers your curves. But a Muslim should always think and remember what wasput down for us to do. How do we move ahead, how do we follow the sunnah of the prophet, please Allah and also be contented? If theres anybody that is vast with the use of her hijab, kindly post how you were able to transform from the head opening type to the body covering type
I av bn wearn hijab from childhood So wearing it is just normal. At that time,My hijab was the one that matched my clothing and the size did not matter. I didnt really understand what the perfect Hijab is like until after my secondary education.

transforming, I understand isnt very easy but I wont be talking of how easy that was for me but generally on what I think are factors to it.

Faith- your eiman goes a long way. Understanding that what u'r doing is for Allah alone and that the reward is from Him is one big step. You dont however wait until the Eiman grows(how does one even measure that). In that case, sow your hijab even if you cant wear it yet and you'd be surprised. .

self esteem- this goes a long way. many pple are not wearing it only because of what their friends might say or because they think they may not fit into some societies or just because they think they'd be less attractive. I bet whoever ca not take you for whom you are is not deserving of your association. undecided

Family/society
- the family plays a role. If u av parents and siblings who respect your choice and support your decision, it would be a smooth ride cool

knowledge
- some distractors would come up, like d NL ones. they'll tell you the hikab is arab culture But with your knowledge of Islam and understanding of the description of the hijab, nothing might shake your resolve. wink

friends- If u are with righteous pple, they'll lift you up when u tend to be falling short of it. these are your sisters in faith, encouraging u further. cool

Am still hoping to be better though. May Allah help us all smiley

Islam › The Treaty Of Hudaybiyyah by deols(op):
All Praises are to Allah, the Lord of the worlds. I bear witness that there is no god but Him and that Muhammad(pbuh) is His messenger.

The prophet is the mercy to mankind and his steps are those perfected by Allah that whosoever follow, shall find the mercy of Allah. This makes it so important that we derive our day to day actions from lessons learnt from the life time of the prophet(pbuh).

The treaty would be best understood after taking a leap into events that precede it. The prophet was sent by Allah to deliver some message to mankind. He set out for this but not without some difficulties as the leaders of Makkah (Quraysh) at the time wouldn’t let him be. His people were tormented and there was a need to move elsewhere. The movement is called Hijrah and was to madinnah. After six years in madinnah, the prophet had a dream that He and his companions made the lesser hajj(umrah) to makkah. The Umrah would mean a great accomplishment as it would complete their dean(religion).

The prophet set out with his followers of about one thousand four hundred. They pitched their tent at a place called Hudaybiyyah. At this time, the prophet knew the Quraysh had a plan of not allowing him and his followers entry into Makkah and so, he sent Uthman bn Affan to the Quraysh to tell them his aim of visiting Makkah was for Umrah and not to fight. Uthman did as told and the Quraysh refused to grant the request of allowing the prophet and all his followers. They however told Uthman he could perform his own hajj. An entourage was sent by the Quraysh to the prophet to persuade him to go back to madinnah but he refused. A man, Suhayl bn Amr was later sent and he came for truce, what we call the treaty of Hudaybiyyah. A treaty is an agreement between two states or sovereigns.

The Treaty

*The Muslims shall return this time and come back next year, but they shall not stay in Makkah for more than three days.

*They shall not come back armed but can bring with them swords only sheathed in scabbards and these shall be kept in bags.

*War activities shall be suspended for ten years, during which both parties will live in full security and neither will raise sword against the other.

*If anyone from the Quraysh goes to  Muhammad(pbuh) without his guardian’s permission, He should be returned but if anyone goes from Muhammad(pbuh) to the Quraysh, he shall not be sent back.

*Whosoever wishes to join Muhammad (pbuh) or enter into treaty with him, should have the liberty to do so; and likewise whosoever wishes to join Quraysh, or enter into treaty with them, should be allowed to do so.

After the treaty was signed, the prophet and his people went back to madinnah.

You might start to think that this was a defeat against the prophet(pbuh) but Allah revealed the following after the treaty.

Surely We have given you a clear victory, that Allah may forgive you your former and later sins, and complete His blessing on you and guide you on a straight path and that Allah may help you with a mighty help. (48: 1-3)

              Lessons from the treaty
*He (pbuh) sent a scout to check out on the Quraysh before he got close to makkah. This is to tell us that we are never to be caught by our enemies unaware. This is seen in diplomatic circles as spies are sent to other nations to detect threat to one’s nation.

*When He and his people got to Hudaybiyyah, they were thirsty and the little available water was from a well. The prophet put his sword into the well and water gushed forth, enough to satisfy his people. This tells us the prophet performed miracles by the power of Allah.

*When the prophet sent Uthman to the Quraysh, he asked Uthman to further propagate Islam. Every position we find ourselves should be used in spreading the message of Islam.

*When Uthman was in Makkah, he was asked by the Quraysh to perform his own tawaf but he declined saying he would only after the prophet did. This is a characteristic of a good follower, one  to emulate.

*Uthman did not come back early enough from the Quraysh and there was the general fears that he was killed. The people with the prophet pledged their allegiance to him and promised to fight the Quraysh if Uthman was killed. Allah so much loved this that he sent a revelation as follows.

'Allah was pleased with the believers when they were pledging their allegiance under the tree.'(48: 181 )

*When the Quraysh saw the pledge under the tree, they feared. This shows how our Unity can be enough stronghold against our enemies.

*Before an agreement was reached, the Quraysh sent a delegation to the prophet in order to ask him to go back to Makkah but he disagreed after which a man, Mikraz bn Hafs was sent. On sighting the man, the prophet remarked, ’that is a treacherous man’ but when Suhayl bin Amr was sent, the prophet said ‘it is clear that they want peace since they have sent this man’.-let our actions be good enough to always speak for us in our absence.

*The agreement was written by Alli- this is an attestation to the prophet being unlettered.

*The writing began with the name of Allah and then an introduction that reads- ‘This is what Muhammad, the prophet of Allah has agreed to‘. The Quraysh didn’t want it written that way and the prophet asked that it be changed to Muhammad, the son of Abdullah. Islam doesn’t allow us to be rigid. When there are options to a task, we can always go for them.

*Alli did not agree to the change but the prophet asked Alli to show him where and erased it himself. That is leadership by example.

*After the agreement, the prophet was distressed and so were his people- they loved him so much that his discomfort was their discomfort. Our love for Allah and the prophet should be the greatest.

*The prophet was faced with the task of telling his people to go back to makkah after the treaty was signed, but they were too distressed to agree. He sought the advice of his wife, Umm Salamah. The Prophet never took women as second class citizens. They had the best of treatment under the Islamic rule and their voices were heard.

The Aftermath

…But it is possible that you dislike a thing which is good for you and that you love a thing which is bad for you. But Allah knows and you know not.(2:216)

The treaty which would have been myopically seen as a defeat ended up being victory for the Muslims. The treaty allowed a mix between Muslims and non Muslims and led to the conversion of many of the Pagans to Islam as they were thrilled by the good qualities of the Muslims. The prophet performed hajj with ten thousand Muslims the following year. Islam was largely spread by good character and not by sword as misconstrued.

The treaty gave the Muslims a political recognition in the Arabian peninsula. After all, a treaty is only signed between sovereigns. It also released the stronghold the Quraysh had on Arabia as the religious leaders of the region. That broke their power and their defeat was imminent.

31st July, 2011
Since it wasn’t announced by the wee hours of today that the moon was sighted, it is obvious that tonight is the first taraweeh and fasting starts tomorrow. HURRAYY!!!!!!!!!!

I am in a village, starting a one week posting on Primary health care (PHC). I had felt bad at the thought of fasting here but on arrival, the thought faded, replaced by the awesome feel of the blessed month!

I had shed some tears earlier today because of the thoughts of how very hopeful I was at the beginning of the last ramadan, and how much  I believed I was going to continue with my good deeds after it and how much I did not succeed in doing that. But then, alhamdulillah that I have been given the grace to be alive now with the opportunity to be forgiven, get great rewards, work for aljannah and probably make better, more achievable resolution for the months before the next ramadan.

At d time for solatul Ishai, I felt so good, in my newly sewn Jilbab(I was going to be praying in this!). I walked towards the mosque happy, joined the many Muslims in the congregation in Observing Ishai and then taraweeh.

I did notice a lot here, but the most interesting to me was the kids I saw. The inner part of the mosque is for the men while the women and children are at the outer part, children in front and women at the back. I saw the children were in really lovelly clothes, I could have called new but wasn’t sure they are. One particular boy was donning a spotless white jalabiyya, I couldn’t but admire. This is a village but the sense of dressing well, even if occasionally is definitely not eluded.

Looking at this innocent children takes me back to the good old days (old?? Can’t believe am already talking dat way!!) when I was very young and together with my siblings and other children around, was Innocently devoted to Allah.
Our dressing was never without hijab and the boys would occasionally wear caps. We already could perform ablution, pray salat, recite certain verses of the Qur’an off hand. We particularly knew the stories of the prophets, thanks to ’the rope of Allah’(a series of textbooks on primary school Islamic studies curriculum). We would compete on our knowledge of these and  on the number of days we fasted.

I can remember I made a resolution to never break my fast again when while in JSS2, my younger brother who was in pry 5 fasted throughout ramadan. It was painful hearing him boast of that while I looked on, ashamed to mention how many I missed.

We would go for Arabic/Quranic  classes(ile keu) after school and during holidays attend Islamic vacation course(IVC), hmmn d good childhood days!!!! How Important IVCs were! Majority of the day to day supplications we use now were learnt there.

If you didn’t know ‘bismillahi wa ala barakatullah’, You did not attend IVC, I assure you smiley!

These days, it is rare to see children go to these kind of Arabic schools and the number of people who go for IVC is in decline. So many reasons are given by parents for this but I tell you, not justified.

The basics of Islam we learnt, at a time when our minds were not filled with how the day to day affairs of the world are run, when we didn’t know if anything became expensive nor were we aware of anything called terrorism.

Our Islam was the religion of peace, one that teaches good neighbourliness, good character, respect for parents, teachers and the elderly. One that provides solution to even the biggest of our problems.

Afterall if an ant was to attack you, all you have to say is-
‘Audhubikalimatillahitamat min sharri ma khalaqa’
And it did work and still does.

These learnt early on, am sure have kept many of us in the deen. We have been able to differentiate the Islam we knew from the one the world is making us see, d minstream media trying to make us believe.

We have remained steadfast and protective of our own because ours is the religion of PEACE!
