No, some of them actually reach their 70s and older. The oldest woman with sickle cell in Nigeria's history died in 2020 at the age of 95. When I was in medical school, one of the oldest Professors of Medicine in the university I attended is a sickle-celler. And he was approaching 70 years at that time.

Truth is, the severity varies from individual to individual. Some will start having crisis from less than 1 year of age, while others won't even have any crisis until much later. Yes, most don't grow beyond age 30-40. But a few grow far beyond that bracket.

Jokes aside, when government subsidises power, that means price controls. That means, reduced profits.

So, at the end, estimated billing happens....it;s a symptom of a wider problem, not letting people set prices as they see fit, so that they can pay for improvements, expansion, gas, and so forth. All of that costs money.

Let's even talk about meters. Meters cost money, a good part of them are made in nigeria, and guess what, workers are suffering tinubulation and have to be paid better salaries. Can your disco afford to meter everyone when they are not earning that kind of profit? You see where I am going... ?.

There are many reasons why this government is not serious. Many times they take decisions that would ensure reelection, not growth and development.

Customers pay for the meter, it's not free, so the idea that Discos can't afford it is baseless. The fact that Discos hoard meters is a testament to this. They complain about everything, but dead to their own responsibilities. What exactly are they doing in business if their infrastructures are rotten and they rely on their customers to take responsibility for replacing or buying transformers and electrifying their neighborhoods?

When you set prices, there is going to be massive wayo wayo and wuru wuru in the system. Humans like to make money. If they can't do it legit, they will do it illicit.

Stop blaming the government for estimated billing when it should be happening in the first place if the Discos are metering their customers at the time of connection. Oga, you can't use MTN service without a SIM card. Why do the Discos connect people to their service without meter? That one na still government?

Discos sole responsibility is to distribute, but they're not doing that at all, leaving the responsibility to the customers or the government and waiting to reap the benefits. When was the last time you see a new transformer or extensions of high tensions wires to a new neighborhood and it's the Disco that's responsible for it?

Estimated billing only happen because customers are denied meters. Meter should be the first thing gotten when connecting to the service. That way, the customers will not feel cheated of paying more than they should. Nobody will willingly pay 20k monthly if they knew they shouldn't be paying beyond 5k

Discos are hoarding prepaid metres because they use postpaid billings to make up for huge losses they incur through energy losses due obsolete distribution infrastructure and theft from bypassed metres.

The bigger problem with today's Discos is that they are mostly owned by politically exposed people and their goons. That's why they are not serious about taking steps to make that business profitable.

In summary, prepaid metre cannot totally solve the problem. I have proposed that instead of having one disco for a state or region, it should be further unbundled so that every LGA will have a disco. That way, the owners can properly monitor power distribution to ensure that consumers are paying, they can upgrade obsolete distribution lines and that they have enough returns to buy more energy.

So it's OK for the Discos to dump the dud on their customers laps? Whose fault is it that the distribution infra are obsolete and what exactly are they doing in business?
These guys would not invest in transformers, they won't even electrify any new neighborhood. They'll wait for the customers to do all that and start to bring bills. We all run businesses, but this is most awkward and annoying reality in the world that I know.
They should be happy they still have a job.

This is a good development if you ask me. If they insist on tariff hikes, the states should mandate them to meter all their customers. Unmetered customers should pay nada.
