I wonder how many comments here really captured what transpired that fateful day of the said coup which was the remote cause of the genocide cum fratricide war. Nzogwu, in the book why we struck by one of the coupist; major Adegboyega, was portrayed as an unbiased Nigerian, a very disciplined and religious Soldier. He was feared by both his superiors and juniors. He wanted the best for Nigeria. Nobody can based on the recent happenings in Nigeria fault the reason for the coup: 10 percent corruption, nepotism, ethnicity and the likes. Today, those corrupt politicians who were executed in the 1966 military putsch when compared with their successors, will be raised to the alter of sainthood. The aim of the coup was driven by nationalism, but Nzogwu was betrayed by those stationed in the eastern part of the country. Or how does one explain the hosting of an archbishop by Michael okpara; the premier of Eastern region who was one of those penciled down for elimination? Or the sudden trip outside the shore of Nigeria by the then president of Nigeria; Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe? From time immemorial, the igbos have always shot themselves on their feet in attempt to outsmart the rest of the country. Nobody will accept such blood-letting against his own when yours remain safe. Having seen his revolutionary dream crumbled before his very eyes, worst still crushed by a fellow igbo officer in the person of Ojukwu, he had no choice but surrendered to the federal govt. Taken to lagos and locked up. Even when the war broke up, Nzogwu had not publicly supported any side. It was after he was smuggled out of the heavily guarded prison by Ojukwu that he eventually fought for biafra. A sandhurst trained armoured personnel poacher, he was a loner. At the young age of 30 and still single and celibate, Nzogwu was killed by Federal troops in 1967. He was immediately flown to kaduna and given full military honour before interred. Which ever way one looks at it...Nzogwu was a victim of power play that characterize Nigeria as a political entity. There can never be a revolutionary, upright and disciplined like him.
Per the bolded, one of the most nonsensical crap I have ever heard about the coup. Even if Nzeogwu had a command of any military unit, he was not feard and had no reason to be feared. Even if Nzeogwu was Chris Anuforo who once commanded 2nd Racce Kaduna who stood in front of Ahmadu Bello and told him to go hell never got such praises from the goofy author. I guess like any typical Yari.ba dude, Ademoyega was poking into the gullibility of most Nigerians. Sometimes it is very laughable to see what most Nigerians write, read and believe.

But such type of corruption perpetrated by Azikwe as Eastern governor premier is not enough to get him killed by Eastern soldiers

But the one they alleged happened in kaduna and in Ibadan places over 1000miles away was more important to them to address

Like Ibo posters ignoring the dirt in ABa but seriously worried about Osogbo
There was no corruptible endeavor on the part of Zik. All the political shenanigans by the colonial masters were silly efforts to stop eastern region led by Zik from establishing ACB, African continental Bank.

A report of Azikwe being corrupt by a British commision - Dende says its an attempt by colonial master to smear Azikwe

The only Azikwes claim we can accept is the one given by his nephew Ifeajuna who whisked him out of the country

Like they say, ibos think they are the only smart people and everyone else is foolish

Azikwe who has several indictment wasnt killed but Bello and Akintola who had no impact on the coupists or their region were the most important things to them to be killed
The truth of the matter stayed with banking issue between BBWA and certain regions of the protectorate later known as Nigeria. It might surprise that Zik was not the only regional premier who came under such political smear.

In 1956, the Foster-Sutton Tribunal investigated the Premier of the Eastern Region, Nnamdi Azikiwe for his involvement in the affairs of African Continental Bank (ACB). Under the code of conduct for ministers, a government officer was required to relinquish his holdings in private business when he assumed public office. The Foster-Sutton Tribunal felt that Zik did not severe his connections to the bank when he became a Minister. The Tribunal believed that Zik continued to use his influence to further the interests of ACB.

Zik, his family, and the Zik Group of Companies were the principal shareholders of the African Continental Bank. ACB loaned over L163, 000 to the Zik Group of Companies at low interest. The Zik group did not have to repay the loans until 1971. ACB was a distressed bank. The new registrar of banks in 1952 refused to grant ACB a license. Attempts to find partners for the bank in Britain failed because of the insolvency of the bank.
In the words of a colonial government official, “Were a UK minister to be involved in a series of transactions the result of which public funds were used to support an otherwise shaky institution in which he was directly interested, he would be forced to leave public life.”4 Why did not the colonial government prosecute Zik for his failure to observe the code of conduct for government officers? The colonial correspondence revealed that the government supported the NCNC as the only party to embrace national unity. Without Zik, the NCNC would collapse. The national interest of the country demanded that Zik continue as leader of the party.5

The Governor of the Eastern Region Sir Clement Pleass further observed, “The exercise of public power for private profit is established in the East.” “The aim of the colonial government was not to establish a standard of honesty in public life. Only time and education can do that.” “A number of sensible people realized that Zik had done harm in the East in the last two years, but the mass of the people, ignorant and uneducated, voted him back to power.”6

When Zik called for a general election in 1957, as an alternative to resigning in the face of the findings of the Foster-Sutton Tribunal, the people gave him their support. The Economist observed that Nigerians had a “sunny and tolerant mentality” towards corruption.7 The colonial officer hoped that “Eventually sufficiently honest and enlightened people will be thrown up to rebuild the prosperity and good government of the region.”8
Some trolls are very funny. Do you actually think the coup plotters were interested in the colonial master's plot to shame and if possible assassinate the colonial interest fighters such as Azikiwe? The silly crap you posted above was distorted version of the facts by conspirators mostly colonialist and willing tools such Yari.ba and other southern minorities.

The three officers with command of military units in northern region did not buy what Nzeogwu was selling.

brother, read history well, the major factor that caused the war was when thousands of people were killed in the north for reasons they don't know anything about, they didn't demand for their own country until they felt they were unsafe in the old one.

picture this, someone, a military officer, from kogi whose name is bayo, kills a prince whose names is abu, now this led to a mass roit which was deliberately left unchecked where thousands of people who don't even know bayo gets killed with impunity, just because their name doesn't sound like abu.

they go home and demand they want to be on their own, that's the simplest cause of the war.

even murtala demanded that the north secede, if not for gowon who told him to calm down, after the first wave of killings, ojukwu called for the takeover of power by the most senior officer, I think his name was bamidele, the guy refused, another senior offcer from the west couldn't control soldiers from the north beneath him, who took orders from a captain of northern origin.

the next most senior was a naval guy from the west too, but murtala and co insisted that they must have the power otherwise they would secede, eventually the two most senior officers from the west relinquished their power and gowon became president , ojukwu however refused to recognise his power, plus as military governor of the east, his people, smarting from the brutal and senseless killings insisted that they wanted their own country.

the rest is history

consider the above before you apportion blames
Per the bolded, it was not even only Murtala Mohammed but the entire participants of the July 29, 1966 coup including Yakubu Gowon hence the slogan of the coup - "ARABA". Those fools who are in denial or willing to distort the historical facts knew the meaning of ARABA in Hausa language.

Politics › Re: FRA Williams On Buhari And Court Orders: Has Buhari Changed? by DerideGull(m): 3:53pm On Jan 15, 2016
PASCHAL28:
Why Buhari Is Right In Detaining Nnamdi Kanu And Dasuki.... The Position Of Law

Ever since some law courts admitted former National Security Adviser Col. Sambo Dasuki (rtd.) and Biafra agitator Nnamdi Kanu to bail and they were not promptly released, there has been lots of hot air released, either backing or attacking their continued detention.

Today, I write to say that I think President Muhammadu Buhari (PMB) and the Federal Government are right in law, contrary to the loud crowd’s assertion of ‘human rights’. first, let me state it clearly here, I am not against anybody nor group. I am an Igbo man from Agu-ukwu Nri in Anaocha Local Govt of Anambra State. but we must always do things in accordance with the laws of the land.

The detention of Col. Sambo Dasuki (rtd.) and Nnamdi Kanu has generated a lot of debate and even criticisms against the Federal Government and the person of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari (PMB). These criticisms reached their peak after the President’s responses to some questions on the issue in his maiden presidential media chat of Wednesday December 30. Some legal luminaries and human rights activists vehemently contend that the Government violated court orders granting the said accused persons bail.

The Vanguard of Monday January 4 reported several senior lawyers, including the current NBA president, contending that the Government is guilty of disregarding court orders on the issue. Some argue that the Federal Government should have released Kanu or deported him after seven days. These critics have turned the trial of the duo into the trial of the State that is accusing them. I put it to 2/3 of Our so called lawyers even those in the rank of SANs that they do not know the true position of our laws. most of them who claim to be so good and sound in the field of law do not know the law itself. Even the ones claiming to be standing for Nnamdi Kanu and Dasuki do not know the true position of laws of the land.

The one million dollar question now begging for answer is therefore: Is the Federal Government really in breach of Court Orders? The answer to this question is NO. Let me say outright here that the President’s opinion on this matter is in accord with the judgement of the Supreme Court in Dokubo-Asari v. F.R.N. (2007) All FWLR (Pt. 375) p. 558 where the Supreme Court held at page 585 thus:

“…Where national security is threatened or there is the real likelihood of it being threatened, human rights or the individual rights of those responsible take second place. Human rights or individual rights must be suspended until the national security can be protected or well taken care of. This is not anything new. The corporate existence of Nigeria as a united, harmonious, indivisible and indissoluble sovereign nation is certainly greater than any citizen’s liberty or right.”

This is the law as enunciated by a unanimous decision of the apex court of the land during Yar'dua regime. The law is what the courts say it is, and not what we see in statute books. Therefore, PMB’s opinion on this matter is more in tandem with the spirit of the constitution and the law than that of those senior legal minds and human rights activists.
It is true Kanu was granted bail on October 17. On the day he claimed to have perfected his bail conditions, he was already too late as the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) had already filed a fresh six-count charge against him. Thus, in law, Kanu was released on bail for the earlier charges and then re-arrested on the new charges, which charge sheet was served on him the day he perfected those conditions.

When Kanu was arraigned on the fresh charges before Justice Ahmed Mohammed of the Federal High Court, he declined to enter his plea and objected to the jurisdiction of the court to try him, accusing the judge of bias. Consequently, the judge rightly disqualified himself and remitted the case file to the Chief Judge for redirection.

Like Kanu, Dasuki and three others were arraigned before the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory by the EFCC on a 19-count charge bordering on money laundering and criminal breach of trust. On December 18 Dasuki and others were granted bail on the said 19-count charge. The former NSA perfected his bail conditions and was released on bail. Later, the government found fresh pieces of evidence against him and he was re-arrested and re-arraigned on a 22-count charge.

He was again granted bail and, after his release, the government re-arrested him at the gate of the court on yet another fresh set of charges.

The law is settled that any bail granted an accused is completely related to the offence(s) for which he is charged. So, if after he has been granted bail the prosecution charges him for another offence for which no bail has been granted and no plea taken, then the accused can be re-arrested.

Some of the lawyers seem to have admitted this leg of the argument. However, the problem they seem to have is the timing of the re-arrest. They opine that even though the Government has a right to re-arrest them on fresh charges, that should not come immediately after release. They further reason that the FG should have lumped the charges together instead of bringing them piecemeal.

Again, these submissions are without any basis. It is within the exclusive prerogative of the prosecution (and not anybody else) to decide whether, when and how to charge accused persons. In these matters, the AGF is the law unto himself! He is not subject to the control of anyone as far as the exercise of his powers is concerned. See State v. S.O. Ilori & 2 others (1983) 2 S.C. 155 and Amaefule v. State (1988) 2 NWLR (part 75) page 156.

One lawyer argued that Kanu should have been released after seven days of detention or deported from Nigeria in accordance with the Immigration Act. The lawyer even initiated an online petition on December 31 calling on the President to resign from office or be impeached for the alleged breaches. It was countered by another petition of Buhari supporters on www.ipetition.com <http://www.ipetition.com>. At the time of writing (noon Friday January cool, the anti-Buharis have gathered 2,997 signatures in 9 days while the pro-Buharis have gathered 12,343 in 5 days, and still counting.

This aside, is seven days detention and/or deportation the punishments for the offence Kanu is charged with? Kanu is facing a 6-count charge, one of which is treason. By section 41 (c) of the CCA, treason is a capital offence which attracts the Death Sentence. It is a matter of common knowledge that Kanu has threatened to wage war against Nigeria and has taken several steps to make his threat real.

Dasuki, on the other hand, is charged with crimes bordering misappropriation of funds set aside for the procurement of arms to battle the Boko Haram insurgency and illegal possession of firearms. Furthermore, there is the fear he may jump bail; in fact he has said he wants to jet out to receive ‘medical attention’ abroad; the habit of many a high profile figure charged with crime.

And could the opinion of the President in the said media chat influence the judge? It depends: for some judges it may make no difference; for some, it may influence the judge against the accused persons; for yet others, it may influence them in favour of the accused persons (true for judges who want to assert their authority and independence). There is no certainty as to whether and in which way the influence of that opinion goes.

So, finally, we resort again to the Supreme Court “Where national security is threatened…individual rights of those responsible take second place...” and say PMB is right by law. At this point, I am calling on my Igbo brothers to come back home. Let us reason on the way forward. Violence does not pay. I call upon the wife of Late Ikemba Ndi Igbo as a matter of urgency to build a sound and digital Library for Ikemba if it at Nnewi His Country Home or at Enugu where people mostly the younger generation who did not witness the Civil war to know more and equally to tap from what went wrong in the past and the way forward. Before 2011 elections, when IBB visited Ojukwu at His Residence before the Northern Elders did mock primaries between Atiku and IBB, Ojukwu addressed Ndi Igbo urging us to support the Northerners. what happened the press statement. I will come up with issue and many more at appropriate time. I rest my case.
Per the bolded, not when the inalienable right of the accused is tramped upon.

Nice but i want to correct some misunderstanding and some points you made.

1) The fact that club performance was used to determine Africa footballer of the Year and the fact that you mentioned the names of the tribes instead of country makes it counts. So, Igbo's still had only 2 players(won 3 times), Yoruba 's had 2 players and 1 Edo. Remember, Yorubas had won CAF most promising player of the Year 3 times( Martins Obafemi twice and Taye Taiwo once) while Igbo had won it twice with Mikel Obi and Kelechi Iheanacho, and Edo/Uhrobo once with Etebor Oghenakaro . When it comes to individual awards Ijaws( Ricky Owubokiri) and Yoruba (Rasheed Yekini) had won the Bola de Prata ( highest goal scorer) in an European league, and Yorubas became the second highest goal scorer in the Premier League with John Fashanu (20 goals) and Emmanuel Adebayor(24 goals).
Yorubas(Emmanuel Adebayor) had won the PFA Team of the Year.

BBC is a new award. U will have a point if the award was available during the time of Odegbami and Muda Lawal. Remember, it was not awarded in 1992 and 1993 hence Rasheed Yekini could have won it too.

2) Even though Arsenal-fc had won more leagues than Chelsea, Chelsea is still rated over Arsenal-fc. Why? Because of the ultimate continental price. And as long as Iwuanyanwu Nationale participated in West Africa Club Championship and failed then it also counted hence Bendel insurance and BBC Lions are still rated above Iwuanyanwu Nationale.

3) Nigeria's first Nations Cup was in 1963 and the major tribe that helped to qualify and participated was Yorubas with 9 key players. Nigeria qualified for the first Olympics football game in 1968, the dominate tribe that achieved that dream was Yorubas. The first major title Nigeria won was the 1973 All African games and as expected the Yorubas also dominated it. In 1976 Nigeria won her first medal in the African Cup of Nations when they came third and as usual Yorubas dominated the team with the likes of Muda Lawal, Haruna ilerika, Ojebode, Kunle Awesu etcetera. Ilerika and Awesu were in the CAF team of the tournament. In 1978 when we also won bronze, Igbo's had 8 while Yoruba had 9 but we still know that the Yorubas dominated the team hence Segun Odegbami was joint highest goal scorer and was listed on CAF team of the tournament. Nigeria won it's first Nations Cup in 1980, Igbo's had 7 and Yorubas had 8 number of players but the first 11 was between 5 and 7 Yorubas. Yoruba was the highest goal scorer of the tournament and Yorubas had 2 players in CAF team of the tournament, Best Ogedegbe and Segun Odegbami while chuks was also listed. Even when we won silver in 1984, Yorubas still dominated. In 1988 when we came second Igbo's had a player more than Yorubas. In Algeirs 90 Igbo's had two players more than Yorubas but the best player was Moses Kpapor from Benue state while Rasheed Yekini was second highest goal scorer of the tournament . In 1992, Yorubas dominated the list again and Rasheed Yekini became the highest goal scorer of the tournament. Although, Igbo's dominated the list in 1994 but the composition of the first 11 was 3 Yorubas( out of 4 yoruba that was in the tournament) 4 Igbo's, 2 Ijaws and 2 Edo. The best and the highest goal scorer of the tournament was Rasheed Yekini. In 2013, Edos dominated the starting 11 with 4 - 5 players, while Igbo's had 3-5, benue 1, Hausa 1, Ibibio 1 and Ijaw 1. And the best player of the tournament for Nigeria was an Edo boy Victor Moses hence he won Samsung fair player of the tournament award and he was also included in CAF team of the tournament alongside Emenike, Ambrose Enyeama and Mikel. While, Emmanuel Emunike was the highest goal scorer.

P.s : you said the players were Igbo's in 1994 and 2013 but atleast Rasheed Yekini(Yoruba) and Victor Moses(Edo) were the best players of the tournament and best player for Nigeria respectively. grin

4) No wahala. Cynthia Uwak and Mercy Akide Udoh had won twice each.

5) Muda Lawal helped to win the Nations cup for the first time, he was just like the xavi of our time. There was no match he didn't start and finished and he is the only Nigerian to have played in five nations cup. When Nigerian league was hot, he won the League, FA Cup and continental prize for Shooting stars. What else?

Taye Taiwo has won CAF most promising player of the Year, 2 times Ligue 1 team of the season, 2 times CAF team of the Year etcetera. Has Ben Iroha achieved that?Patrick Owomoyela played for Dortmund, his German team can third in FIFA Confederations Cup etcetera. Where did Chidi nwanu play and what did he win? Maurice Edu was outstanding for USA and his club while Dennis Aogo played for the German team that came third in the FIFA World Cup. Have any of those you listed capable of breaking into the German team?

Taiwo don pass Ben Iroha tete.

6) As far as tribe is concerned, David Alaba is Yoruba.

My point is that every tribes dominated and contributed to Africa football.
Per the bolded, I can safely say 7 were Yoruba. Remember it was a period everything revolves around Lagos yet Igbo provided 7 too. Also per the bolded in red, nothing could be farther from the truth than this conjecture. Please give the list of the 1973 Nigerian soccer squad that won the gold.

More masculine than Niger Delta guys? Nah. You're more athletic than them only because you guys are refined. Any one with a brain knows Niger Delta guys are the badasses of Nigeria.
I do not know what you mean by Niger Delta guys. The subject matter of this discussion is ethnicity. During my green days as a boy, there was traditional wrestling match held in Rivers State (Bayelsa) included, till date non-Igbo has never become a champion.
