Xiaomi is a high-end budget smartphone producer with popular phone brands to its credit. However, there have been controversies of data theft and accusations of Xiaomi spying on users’ activities.
Cybersecurity researchers Garbi Cirlig and Andrew Tierney have reported several data breaches associated with the Redmi Note 8 and the Mi Browser with the browser collecting users’ data while browsing in Incognito mode.
Although Xiaomi denied allegations of it collecting users data and spying on their browsing activities, it mentioned that data are collected with users’ consent, and such data are collected as anonymous data and used for internal analysis, and no Personally Identifiable Information is linked to collected data.
If you’re a Xiaomi phone user, here are ways you can protect your data and privacy on Xiaomi and Mi browsers.
Data collection is turned on by default for most default apps on the Xiaomi smartphone brand. Toggle off the MSA (MIUI System Ads) button. 5. Follow the prompt and wait for 10 seconds, after which you can now tap on ‘Revoke.’ 6. To disable ad services and data usage collection,
1. Go back to step iii, in the ‘Additional Settings’ page, tap on ‘Privacy.’ 2. In the ‘Privacy menu,’ toggle off the ‘User Experience Program’ and ‘Send diagnostic data automatically’ to prevent Xiaomi from sending your data remotely to its server. 3. With decent price but I will still prefer the camon 17 over the Redmi 9T, cos of internal space and camera quality for my business.
atheistandproud: Before us today, we have two very decent midrange phones competing for our attention. They are the Redmi 9T vs Tecno Camon 17.
The midrange portion of the smartphone market is where most buyers look to when seeking for decent phones at affordable prices. Both phones are sold at around the same price.
The Redmi 9T and the Tecno Camon 17 both promise a lot of bang for the asking price. This has led a lot of people to wonder which phone is the better option.
If you are looking to buy a new phone and are torn between both options, do read on.
Redmi 9T vs Tecno Camon 17
Build
Both phones are built with plastic. They both have plastic frames and plastic backs. There is no glass here. The Tecno Camon 17 is slightly heavier at 198g when compared to the Redmi 9T which weighs 197g.
SoC
The Redmi 9T has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 662 SoC. It is an octa core SoC with 2 ARM Cortex A73 (2GHz) and 6 ARM Cortex A55 (1.8GHz) CPU cores. The GPU on board is an Adreno 610. The SoC has a transistor size of 11nm.
The Tecno Camon 17 runs with a MediaTek Helio G85. This is an octa core SoC with 2 ARM Cortex A75 (2GHz) and 6 ARM Cortex A55 (1.8GHz) CPU cores. The GPU on board is a Mali G52. The transistors on this SoC are 12nm in size.
Software
The Redmi 9T ships with MIUI 12 running on Android 10. The Redmi 9T is upgradeable to Android 11 and would get up to two years of software updates.
The Tecno Camon 17 ships with HiOS 7.6 on top of Android 11. It is the more modern phone but Tecno’s track record with software support is below par.
Performance
In terms of how the phone would perform with apps, speed and carrying out tasks, the Tecno Camon 17 would outperform the Redmi 9T but would consume more battery as well. The Tecno Camon 17 has an Antutu benchmark version 8 score of 203,000 compared to the 175488 scored by the Redmi 9T.
That being said, the Redmi 9T would handle games and other graphical applications better. Why is that? Well the Redmi 9T has the better GPU and since it uses a Qualcomm Snapdragon SoC, games and apps (like GCam) are optimized for it.
Memory
The Redmi 9T uses the newer and faster UFS 2.1 while the Tecno Camon 17 uses the older and slower eMMC 5.1. The difference in speed can be seen transferring files across folders or copying to/from a laptop.
Both phones offer that same storage options of 4/64GB and 6/128GB, but the Redmi 9T has the extra option of 4/128GB.
Camera
This is one area on phones that is very important to a lot of people, the cameras. Lots of people rely on their smartphone camera not just for photo and video, but for work, meetings and other activities.
The Redmi 9T has a quad (4) camera set-up. The first is the main camera (wide) which is a 48MP Samsung GM1 sensor. The second one is an 8MP Omnivision Ultrawide camera. The third is a 2MP Macro camera and the fourth is a 2MP depth sensor.
The Tecno on the other hand only has triple (3) camera set-up. The first is a 48MP (wide) camera. The second is a 2MP depth sensor and the third one is either a black and white or a QVGA sensor or purely just for aesthetic. All of the cameras on the Tecno are generic (the maker is unknown).
The Redmi 9T has the better cameras hands down. The Samsung GM1 sensor is tried, tested and very capable of delivering excellent shots.
Both phones record video of Full High Definition (FHD) or 1080p @ 30 frames per second (fps).
At the front, the Redmi 9T has an 8MP selfie, while the Tecno Camon 17 has a 16MP selfie. The Tecno Camon 17 has the better selfie camera and would produce better photos. Both phones record selfie video of 1080p @ 30fps.
Display
Both devices use an IPS LCD display. The Tecno Camon 17 has the larger 6.8” screen with a resolution of 720p (HD+) and a pixel density of 266 ppi. The Camon 17 also has a 90Hz refresh rate with brightness rating of 450 nits.
The Redmi 9T has the smaller 6.5” screen with a resolution of 1080p (FHD+) and a pixel density of 395 ppi. The Redmi 9T has a standard 60Hz refresh rate, 450 nits brightness and Gorilla Glass 3 for screen protection.
The Redmi 9T has the better display options overall. The only area it falls short is the slower refresh rate which it posseses.
Battery
The Tecno Camon 17 has a Li-polymer 5,000mAh battery and supports 18W fast charge.
The Redmi 9T also has a Li-polymer battery but it is bigger at 6,000mAh. It supports 18W fast charge as well. The Redmi 9T takes this one.
Sensors Both phones have finger print sensors for security. They also both have GPS, proximity sensors, accelerometers and a compass. They both do not have gyroscopes. That is where the similarities end.
The Redmi 9T has an infrared blaster and NFC. Both of which the Camon 17 lacks.
Connectivity The Redmi 9T has network bands 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 20, 28, 38, 40 and 41 for 4G LTE. Due to the modem on its SoC, it has upload speeds of 102Mbps and download speeds of 603Mbps.
The Camon 17 only has 1, 3, 5, 7, 8, 20, 38, 40 and 41. It has 75Mbps upload speeds and 301Mbps download speeds.
Both phones have dual 4G nano SIM slots and support Bluetooth 5 as well as Wifi 5.
Prices The Tecno Camon 17 (4/128GB) sells for ₦76,000 on Pointek while the Redmi 9T (4/128GB) sells for ₦76,800 on Xiaomi’s official Jumia store.
Verdict Performance: Tecno Camon 17
Memory: Redmi 9T
Camera: Redmi 9T
Display: Redmi 9T
Battery: Redmi 9T
Sensors: Redmi 9T
Connectivity: Redmi 9T
Final say Both phones are very decent for the price. If you are looking for pure processor performance whilst ignoring other things, then you should go with the Tecno Camon 17. If you want the whole package and can ignore a slight performance dip, then the Redmi 9T will give you everything you want at this price point.

Yinkus009: TECNO today announced the renewal of its partnership with UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, to support UNHCR’s global program in primary education, Educate A Child (EAC). The partnership aims to support the improvement of refugee children’s education in Africa, ensuring refugee children’s right to education and ultimately contribute to equal access to education for all.
In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic devastated the learning conditions of refugee children, causing school closures in Africa over the school year. By contributing financially to the EAC program, TECNO’s support has benefited children in Kenya’s Dadaab camp by providing them with textbooks and school kits. In addition, TECNO donated tablets to support continued learning of refugee children during school closure, as well as 50,000 medical face masks for UNHCR Kenya to support its COVID-19 response.
In 2021, TECNO and UNHCR will continue the partnership to benefit a total of 10,670 refugee children in Uganda and Kenya. TECNO’s financial contribution to the EAC program will contribute to the holistic intervention in these locations including improvement of school infrastructure, material assistance to students, training for teachers, and support for refugee students with special needs.
Uganda and Kenya are amongst the world’s top host countries for refugees. Uganda is the largest one in Africa. Over half of the refugees in the two countries are below 18 years old (58% in Uganda and 53% in Kenya). While some refugees may have the access to study in public educational institutions, the shortage of learning resources has put many refugee children at risk of dropping out of school. In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic in Africa, continuous commitment from TECNO is important to support a safe school reopening and better access for refugee children to continue their primary education, laying the foundation for them to pursue higher education in the future.
Vivian Tan, UNHCR Representative ad interim in China, expressed appreciation for the continued support from TECNO. “UNHCR welcomes this renewed partnership,” she said. “COVID-19 has interrupted learning in many countries, and refugee children are no exception. Support from our private sector partners like TECNO is critical for UNHCR to continue and strengthen our efforts to support refugee learners and students to continue their education in this difficult time, and in the post-COVID time. The Chinese private sector can play an important role in addressing the gaps in refugee education globally, including providing financial contribution, technology and innovative solutions. We hope more Chinese private sector actors will be inspired by the partnership between TECNO and UNHCR.”
Stephen Ha, General Manager of TECNO said, “With the renewed partnership with UNHCR, we hope to continue our support in improving the learning conditions of refugee children. As part of our Corporate Social Responsibility, TECNO is committed to giving back to the community where we are present. In the post-COVID time, we will amplify our efforts, especially using digital solutions to increase educational opportunity and enhance education quality for children in Africa so that they could receive better education and be better connected with the world.”
Inclusive and equitable quality education is Goal 4 of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and is also a long-term goal for UNHCR. Since 2020, UNHCR has been working with different partners to implement the EAC program that aims to provide 365,000 out-of-school children with primary education in 14 operations by 2022. Out of the 14 countries, Kenya and Uganda are two key operations. Despite the huge impact of COVID-19, UNHCR remains committed to advancing inclusive and equitable quality education for refugee children.
By the end of 2020, an estimated 4.2 million children and youth of concern to UNHCR have been affected by the pandemic globally. Once out of school, many refugee children will never return. UNHCR has been making efforts to create more equitable and inclusive educational access for displaced and refugee children so that they could all return to school. UNHCR and TECNO will deepen their partnership, through which they hope to engage more with corporate employees, partners and the wider public audience to strengthen understanding and support for education in Africa.
ScamHunter: Hi guys, I got confused when I went to buy a phone that has good camera. The attendants representing Vivo (I think that's the name) and Oppo just tried outdoing one another to convince me, so I decided to make some consultations. The main purpose of the phone is to help me record some videos for my project. What's your suggestion for the best camera phone at that budget?

Africa’s overall mobile phone market had a year-on-year (YoY) growth of 14.0 percent in the first quarter to 53.3 million units, according to the International Data Corporation (IDC). Its report says the region’s smartphone market grew 16.8 percent in Q1 to 23.4 million units, with the feature phone market up 11.9 percent to 29.9 million units.
Major African smartphone markets performed well with the exception of South Africa, where the main vendors faced supply shortages and an economic environment that hit demand.
Egypt had one of the highest growth rates in the region in Q1 thanks to strong local demand, the easing of Covid-19 restrictions, and major vendors like Samsung and Oppo increasing their shipments to the country.
Nigeria also had a strong YoY growth rate with the release of pent-up demand and increasing shipments of Transsion and Samsung devices to the market.
Transsion brands (Tecno, Infinix, and Itel) continued to lead Africa’s smartphone space in Q1, with a combined unit share of 44.3 percent, followed by Samsung and Oppo with respective shares of 22.9 percent and 8.3 percent.
Transsion brands also dominate the feature phone market, with a combined unit share of 78.7 percent, followed by Nokia and Stylo with respective shares of 8.1 percent and 1.7 percent. The ultra-low price band (below USD 100) accounted for 42.0 percent of the market’s shipments in Q1 2021, down from 49.6 percent in Q1 2020.
The low-end price band (USD 100 to USD 200) saw its share increase from 35.2 percent to 43.3 percent over the same period. The increased specifications and attributes in smartphones are driving prices upwards, as shown by the growth of the low-end price band, IDC said.
Main vendors such as Transsion, Samsung, Oppo and Xiaomi all launched new feature-rich models in this price band. These models were well received by channels and customers alike.
Looking ahead, IDC expects Africa’s smartphone market to grow 5.6 percent YoY in unit terms for 2021 as a whole
This is very convincing as extra miles was taken even after the first unboxing.
Now I can recommend and believe on this phone.
ahiadzro: It’s almost 2 months after the launch of the SPARK 7P. The budget-friendly device we all desired and praised for its build quality and outstanding features.
After more than a month of usage, this is what is called a long-term review. (I would discuss and give my honest opinion about its build quality and performance)
For a recap of both my unboxing and first impressions, kindly click on any of the links below!
Design and Build The smartphone is undeniably sleek and attractive; borrowing its design from its best-selling predecessor the SPARK 4, although major upgrades can be noticed.
The front has a dewdrop IPS display, which gives the phone a nostalgic feeling relating to its predecessor. The back is designed with a textured polycarbonate finish and a polished frame which gives the phone a firm grip and is very forgiving when it comes to fingerprints. It also houses the volume rocker and power button on the right frame, with the SIM/MicroSD slot on the left. These buttons are easier to reach and provide a satisfying click when tapped .... https://spot.tecno.com/gh/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=146493
