Contractors, who include members of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Ondo State have been directed to refund N38 million being funds meant for the School Feeding Programme but allegedly diverted.

The Federal Government’s Home Grown School Feeding Programme which was launched last year in the state was meant to provide free daily meals for pupils in public primary schools across the state.

But the programme was halted in the state following the alleged diversion of the funds by the party leaders awarded the contract.

The Special Adviser to Governor Rotimi Akeredolu on Multilateral and Inter-Governmental Affairs, Mrs. Bunmi Ademosun said in Akure that the contractors have started refunding the money.

Ademosun said: “The Federal Government did not give money again in the state for school feeding programme because when we started the programme, those who got the contracts from the party (APC) did not even cook any food for the children.

“Some, for instance, even engaged people after collecting about N150,000 for 20 days now gave N10,000 to those hired for the cooking. There is nothing this amount can do.

“Some of these politicians will stay in Akure and get the contract to cook for pupils in Ode-Aye, some will be in Owo and get the contracts for pupils in Akoko. At the end of the day, they will not even leave their base after getting money. These people are returning the money now.”

PDP ask EFCC to investigate

In a swift response, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the state has called on the EFCC to investigate and bring the party leaders to book.

The party’s Director of Publicity, Zadok Akintoye, in a statement yesterday in Akure, said: “We are compelled as citizens of this great state, to draw the attention of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, to immediately probe and investigate this allegation.

“While the Special Assistant to the governor alluded to the fact that some of those who have committed these crimes may have been clandestinely returning the stolen funds, we believe that such crimes, which is in direct contravention of the law must be thoroughly investigated and the perpetrators brought to book.”

Countries within the West African sub-region will be able to use a single currency from January 2020

The currency which is called ECO was adopted by the Authority of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government on Saturday in Nigeria’s capital Abuja.

The West African leaders endorsed the currency at their 55th Ordinary Session and approved a road map towards the currency’s issuance in January 2020.

There roadmap is to ensure that all member countries meet three primary criteria for the adoption of the currency.

The criteria for adoption includes member countries having a budget deficit of not more than 3%; average annual inflation of less than 10% with a long-term goal of not more than 5% by 2019.


Member countries were also expected to have gross reserves that can finance at least three months of imports.

The other convergence criteria that have been adopted by ECOWAS are public debt or Gross Domestic Product of not more than 70%.

There is also the issue of central banks financing budget deficit not more than 10% of previous year’s tax revenue, and nominal exchange rate variation of plus or minus 10%.

A communiqué by Nigeria’s Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mustapha Suleiman said that the regional leaders instructed the ECOWAS Commission to work in collaboration with West African Monetary Agency.


The commission is also expected to work with West African Monetary Institute and all central banks to settle on a symbol for the single currency.

Meanwhile, the ECOWAS Chairman President Issoufou Mahamadou said that the revised roadmap does not affect the date for the issuance of the single currency in January 2020.

He said “We have not changed that but we will continue with assessment between now and then.

“We are of the view that countries that are ready will launch the single currency and countries that are not yet ready will join the programme as they comply with all six convergence criteria,” he added.

ECOWAS was set up in 1975 and has a combined population of 385 million.


It comprises Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Togo.

Eight of these countries use one currency called the CFA franc. Those are Benin, Burkina Faso, Guinea-Bissau, Ivory Coast, Mali, Niger, Senegal, and Togo.

The decision to adopt one currency is similar to that of the European Union to adopt a single currency called Euro.

The Lagos State Motor Vehicle Administration Agency (MVAA) has called on members of the public who had applied for drivers’ licences but are yet to collect same to visit stations where they applied and processed their documents for collection.

A statement issued on Wednesday by the Deputy Director, Public Affairs in the Agency, Mrs. Ronke Famakinwa noted that the call became imperative in view of the mounting pile of unclaimed drivers licences in some of the Agency’s stations.

It, therefore, urged all those affected to visit any of its stations at Ojodu, Somolu, Ikorodu, Ojo, Epe, Ikeja, Apapa, Alaka, Agege, Sura, Iru Victoria Island, Alimosho and Coker-Aguda for the collection, adding that the stations would also be opened on Saturdays between the hours of 10.00am and 2.00pm in order to ease the process of collection for those who might not be available during weekdays.

The release emphasised that it is compulsory and legal for every motorist to carry a valid driver’s licence in the State just as it reiterated the need for motorists to desist from patronising touts and other unscrupulous individuals for licence processing.
