Literature › Gordon Keller’s 4 Common Errors Of Dialogue by Divepen1(mod): 7:00pm On Aug 31, 2017
Gordon Kellier gave 4 common errors in his book ‘ Fiction’ and you ought to know them.
Common errors of Dialogues:
1. Introduce dialogue grammatically. A verb like said is required.
Some verbs require an indirect object:
WRONG: He told, “I’m leaving.”
RIGHT: He told his girlfriend, “I’m leaving.”
2. Not all verbs that describe manner or speech can introduce dialogue by themselves:
WRONG: “Your move,” he smiled.
RIGHT: “Your move,” he said with a smile.
WRONG: He shrugged, “If you say so.”
RIGHT: Shrugging, he said, “If you say so.”
3. Identify the speakers with a phrase like “he said.” You may know
who is speaking in each paragraph, but your reader needs help.
Vary the location of the “he said” phrases. It is monotonous if the “he said” phrase comes at the beginning or end of every paragraph. Do not keep the reader wondering who is speaking:
WRONG: “I hate to disappoint you, but I think you’re making a big mistake. Are you sure you’ll feel this way next week? Or next year? Do you think you can just walk back into your girlfriend’s arms if you should someday change your mind?” my sister asked.
BETTER: “I hate to disappoint you,” my sister said, “but I think. . . .”
4. Not Varying the verbs that introduce dialogue.
Which of this error have you ever committed? Drop your response in the comment box.

Literature/Writing Ads › Why You Need To Publish Your E-books Through Writertain by Divepen1(mod): 11:05pm On Aug 29, 2017
Why Writertain E-Publishers
Writertain E-Publishers started as a way to ensure Nigerian writers make reasonable amount of money from e-publishing and from writing generally.

Places We Would Be Publishing Your Books
For now, we would be restricted to Okadabooks and Smashwords.

Why You Should Publish With Us For Okadabooks and Smashwords
Okadabooks requires that an author makes ten thousand naira before you can withdraw your money. While this is a brilliant idea, many authors cannot get to this position even at the end of two years.

More so, Smashwords publishing can also be limiting to an extent especially with the case of money withdrawal and sales.
You should use Writertain because of:

1. Reference and Population: since a lot of people would be publishing through us, it would be easy to find your books through our various means of advertisements.
Marketing and Advert: since these books are published through us, we would ensure we advertise them on our different platforms. Personal advertisement on Okadabooks cost is good but should be used if you are ready to spend a lot before making sales. We would advertise books appropriately.

2. Editing of works: Since our reputation is also at stake here, we would be involved in the editing processes of the work. We would pay editors to make the work better and suitable for publishing.

3. Book Formating: we would format the book to the taste of the readers and the various ebook publishers.

4. Book Covers: unless you have a particular book cover you would like to use, we would be in charge of creating one for your book.

5. Payment Method: since it isn't easy to withdraw from these accounts, we would make a contract with you that would enable you get your money at the time stipulated in the contract with you. This means that you're not concerned with knowing if we have collected our money from the sources or not.

6. Eat, Sleep and Write: we will do the hardwork, you'll keep writing and make your money.

Advertisement Strategy
1. Our Website and our social platform: we are putting in a lot of resources into making our website one of the best for Nigerian Literature. Your book would get good exposure on the website.

2. HARO: we write for HARO. HARO means Help a Reporter Out. Here, we have different top newspapers getting articles for their website. We would gather the main theme of your book and pitch them to one of HARO journalists and that is an international exposure for your book.

3. Websites Ad: we would buy Ads on Facebook, Instagram and Nairaland just to advertise our company, indirectly your books.

4. Posts: We would cull out the major discussions of your book and write articles on them for different websites like Nairaland, Hubpages, Quota etc.
and Many more methods...

How Do You Pay Us
The E-publishing firms pays differently. While Okadabooks would get 30% off the original sales, Smashwords can either collect 29.5% or 40% if the book was sold in one of their retailer shops.

Writertain would be taking 20% of the original sales.
For further question and enquiry, and to publish your work send a message to us at writertain@gmail.com.
We would be expecting your messages.

Yes. They accept fiction.
Just click on create book. You would see an empty place before create epub or Upload epub.
since you don't have Epub, simply copy it from word and paste it in the empty space. Automatically, it has created an epub for you. The good thing about it is that you can always edit your works.

First Line 1: The boat capsized and the people began to struggle for their lives

First Line 2: She sank into the chair and gaped at him.

First Line 3: He just knew there was something wrong especially when the rain refused to stop

Literature › How To Publish With Farafina Book Publishers by Divepen1(mod): 9:17am On Aug 29, 2017
To go traditional in book publishing is something you should strive for, especially if you don’t have the chance to be so involved in the processes of Self-publishing. More so, if you publish with the right company, traditional publishing pays a lot.

This article would focus on one of the Leading Trado-publisher in Nigeria, Farafina Publishers Nigeria. Find below the requirements needed to get your book published with them. Please ensure you have edited the grammar, punctuation and the rest.

1. Know What They Want: In their words
” We are looking for literary and popular fiction, general interest and children’s/educational books. We are interested in both established and previously unpublished writers.
We do not currently publish poetry, motivational, self-help or religious books under Farafina. To have such works published, please consider the services of our subsidy imprint, Prestige Publishing.”

2. Send An Excerpt: Save a reasonable amount of your work or 3 chapters of your work on a word document. These chapters do not necessarrily have to be the beginning of the novel. In fact, send the best parts and not those parts that are yawning.

3. Send Synopsis not blurb or Teaser:
Synopsis is what the editors read after they have read some parts of your novel. The synopsis gives them details on the main theme, major character and the major conflict.
Where as, a teaser is just to catch the readers’ attention. For example:
The Enchanted Swans by Christy Nicholas
Fionnuala must care for her three brothers while learning to live under an evil curse. Will she find a way to break the spell, or will they remain swans, tethered to three places for nine hundred years?
Meanwhile, Blurbs are quotes from other people on your book.
Farafina Book Publishers would accept such.

3. Format Your Work: Use the following format for any work you want to send to them;
Double spacing
justify to the left.
12 serif font.

4. Write a query letter: try as much as you can to get name of editors at Farafina. A query letter is like an application letter

5. Send email to
submissions@kachifo.com. Don’t send it to any of their other emails. They would consider it as an unsolicited work and would send them to the trash without looking at it.

6. Give it the title ‘submission ‘

7. No hard Copy: they don’t accept hard copies or links to your blog.

8. Wait For Eight Weeks: although they reply earlier than that, it is always advisable to not have your hopes high.

9. If Accepted: they would offer you a contract and royalty format. You’re not paying any dime.

Question:What’s delaying you?

Are You Having Problem Doing It Yourself, then send your work to writertain@gmail.com. We would help the first 10 people to work on it for free. Others, you will be charged 500 naira

Webmasters › Re: Advice On Setting Up New Blog by Divepen1(m): 7:16am On Aug 29, 2017
lajuto:
I want to set up a new blog.
I have different ideas and I don't know which one to choose.
Congrats on these ideas.
I will number the issues and talk about them separately.

1) Niche: I have three different ideas. I don't know which one to go with.
The first is a blog on Nigeria. Specifically to provide information about Nigeria. No politics, no entertainment, purely information about Nigeria. I've already registered the domain name for this but I'm yet to pay for it. From my research, I discovered that there is a good number searches monthly in google for information relating to Nigeria. Also, I discovered that there are not a lot of blogs dedicated to this. However, I'm worried about competition from news and entertainment blogs that are general and are not dedicated to this.

The second is a blog on Architecture. As a student of Architecture, I noticed that there are not enough blogs that is if any dedicated to Architecture in Nigeria. It's mostly websites for some Architectural firms and then some real estate blogs.
However, there are not much searches relating to Architecture in Nigeria. I'm worried about getting traffic on this blog. I don't see how I'll make money from this.

The third and the last is a real estate blog. I'm not really much into this. I'm considering it actually because it like broadens the Architecture niche. So that's why I'm considering it as it has more searches monthly. Though it has more competition.

That's the three niches I'm thinking of going into.
I'll ask you to find the one that is truly your passion. Whenever you become successful at that you might begin to try others. If you go any that isn't your passion. You're liable of failing or becoming tired.

2) Platform
I don't know if I should go with the blogger platform or wordpress. I need advice on that.
I'll go with WordPress any day especially because of the theme and the accessibility I have. I operate my website Writertain with WordPress app.
3)*. If I go with WordPress what's the best affordable local hosting in Nigeria.
From my research so far, I've found out four that are good.
Garanntor.ng
Qserver
Whogohost
Gigalayer
Web4africa
Smartweb
After a research done by my friends, ekaromail and Repogirl, we decided local hosting companies have lower reviews and are easily hackable. So we went for Namecheap. I got mine for just 4k. While I got the domain name 5k
Please I really need your advice. I'm ready to go into blogging as a business and invest my money in it. I've readied some funds towards this.

Please help a brother.
I should have answered this yesterday, but I guess I assumed others answered you correctly.

Use this to guide your way as you write about market.

Sights

Baskets of big pepper, neat cone shape of food stuffs, women putting on blouses, women wearing dirty blouses, old benches, wet ground, market sellers without stalls, people pushing shell barrow, beggars, hooligans, untarred road, traders pulling people or gesturing to them to buy their wares, slow movement of people, buyers prolong look, enticing products and wares, mouse, small rodents.

Sound
Children playing, women arguing, squeaky table, cranky noise of wheel barrows, basin and bowls clanging, splash of water or a liquid goods falling, the boisterous noise of women haggling with their buyers.

Smell
Fresh smell of foodstuffs, irritating body odours, sweet smell of perfume at perfume store, raw cold smell of meat and fish, inviting smell of dryfish and cray fish, dirt, fried and cooked products.

Taste
Cold air, dry air
Touch
Avoiding the touch of dirty people, walking slowly to avoid hitting others, hitting others without saying sorry, brushing of body, cold feel of frozen fish, hotness of fast food, dryness of foodstuff, rubbing of goods, gently picking of foodstuffs, careful picking of fragile stuffs, pinching cold stuffs, grasping of big goods, carrying of heavy goods
Hint : The way you use your words here would determine what you would get as you write. The description becomes vivid with your application of the above.
For example:
Beautiful young sassy Janet Olaide was so engrossed in covering her nose and avoiding a dirty wheel-barrow pusher’s body didn’t brush with hers that she didn’t notice the one-eyed cripple beside her. He pushed her and she jumped away first and tried to avoid the basket of fresh tomatoes. And she didn’t notice me as I…

Question: What description would you have added to these?

Literature › Misconception About Self-publishing by Divepen1(mod): 10:28am On Aug 28, 2017
Today, we would be discussing the concept of self-publishing. Because of the way the concept or the word has been used, many people simply assume that self-publishing is limited to hard copies only. So, whenever they don’t get the chance to publish an hard copy of their story, they just assume they are not supposed to be referred to as an author. That’s a big misconception and should be done away with.
The process of Publishing is simply
Now, the last two are not compulsory because;
* If you’re publishing an eBook, you might decide not to use a cover. A very good example are books gotten in PDF format. The Celestine Prophecy as well as others might not have a book cover but might have a cover page. There are very good examples below.

https://i1.wp.com/writertain.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/wp-image-1605961054.png
* Printing is not compulsory in the sense that you don’t need to publish it in hard copies before people read it.
From all indications, you can say that Self-publishing is the publishing done and controlled by the author. He or she might not necessarily be the one involved in all the processes, but he or she pays for the finalisation of the work. Therefore, your self-published books can either be eBook format or hardcopy or pamphlet or even website (example www.globalruns.com ).
Examples of such self-published books are
1. 29, Single and Nigerian by naijasinglegirl, which was first published in hard cover and now the 3rd ranking on Okadabooks

https://i0.wp.com/writertain.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/wp-image-104828604.png
2. Fifty Shades of Grey by E.L James: this book started out as a fan fiction but later became a book sold on print on demand and still has eBook version.
As we progress, we would enlighten us on the processes involved and would update us self-publishing companies in Nigeria and outside Nigeria. Do subscribe to www.writertain.com for regular updates.
Meanwhile be truthful o. before you read this article, what do always see self-publishing as?
