PoliticsRescue Leah Sharibu, Others Before Boko Haram’s Deadline, Religious Leaders Beg by divinehand2003(op): 5:56am On Oct 13, 2018
Rescue Leah Sharibu, others before Boko Haram’s deadline, religious leaders beg Buhari

The Chairman of the Northern Christian Association of Nigeria, Rev. Yakubu Pam, has appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to do everything within his power to rescue Leah Sharibu before the deadline given by Boko Haram for negotiation to expire.

He also appealed to the insurgents to release Sharibu and others in captivity, stating that their families are in agony.

All Dapchi school girls but Leah had since regained freedom. She was being held on account of her faith.

Speaking in an interview with journalists in Abuja on Friday, Pam expressed fear that the abducted Dapchi schoolgirl may be executed as threatened by Boko Haram.

“We have heard what the abductors have said; we are here together as religious leaders and traditional rulers to appeal to the conscience of the abductors of these innocent girls.

“We heard next week is the deadline to execute the girls but we don’t know, but we are here to make an appeal to them and we pray that God speaks to their heart so they can release these innocent girls,” Pam pleaded.

The NCAN expressed hope that the federal government would negotiate with the insurgents for the release of all Boko Haram captives.

The Chief Imam of Apo Legislative Quarters Mosque, Sheikh Muhammed Nuru Khalid, said religious leaders were worried about all those in captivity, especially Leah Sharibu because other Dapchi schoolgirls were released by their abductors.

He said, “We are appealing to them to release those in their captivity especially, Leah Sharibu. We are worried about her in particular because she was abducted with other children, but why should she be left behind, that’s our problem.”

He reiterated the readiness of Islamic leaders to join hands with anyone to secure the release of those in Boko Haram captivity, noting that Islam did not ask anyone to abduct anybody.

TravelNCAA, AIB Launch Probe As Overland Plane Bursts Into Flame Inside Lagos Airport by divinehand2003(op): 5:40am On Oct 13, 2018
An aircraft – ATR 42 -belonging to Overland Airways unexpectedly caught fire yesterday where it was parked at the airline’s hangar at the domestic wing of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Ikeja.

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority ( NCAA) and Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB) immediately launched investigations into the fire.

Spokesman of the AIB, Tunji Oketumbi, who confirmed the development, said a team of investigators from the bureau went to the site of the incident and carried out the necessary duties.

The AIB official said there was no intention of flight as regards the aircraft, which he said was seriously affected by fire.

He said the AIB could only operate within the limits of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Annex 13 covering air accident investigation.

In a telephone interview, an official of the NCAA said the regulatory body sent its personnel to ascertain what happened to the aircraft at the hangar.

It was also leant that a director with the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), led to team to see how its aerodrome rescue safety fire fighting unit contained the incident.

FAAN fire tenders/trucks were mobilised to the incident scene to put out the fire.

Meanwhile, Overland Airways attributed the impact of a foreign object as the cause of fire.

A statement issued by the airline’s management said: “In a lone incident this morning (yesterday), our aircraft asset undergoing routine maintenance inspection was impacted by a foreign object which led to a fire that damaged aircraft parked at our hangar facility at the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Ikeja, Lagos.

“The aircraft was not in public service when the unfortunate incident occurred.

“The fire was put under control by a combined safety team of Overland Airways and the FAAN Fire Service.

“We are very grateful to God Almighty that there was no injury to any personnel, no loss of life and no third-party damage recorded. Also our ultra-modern aircraft hangar was not damaged.“

PoliticsHow Nigeria Loses N2.1 Trillion To Violence Against Children – UNICEF by divinehand2003(op): 6:51am On Oct 11, 2018
- UNICEF has highlighted the importance of increased social welfare workforce in Nigeria

- The agency said Nigeria loses $6.1 billion of its earning to violence against children

- According to UNICEF, there is need for Nigeria to have a strong social work workforce as a critical means to achieving the SDGs

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has said that Nigeria loses $6.1 billion of its earning to violence against children.

The international agency said the money lost by Nigeria to violence against children accounts to 1.07% of the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Speaking at a media dialogue on social work professionalisation bill, ab child protection specialist, Maryam Enyiazu, said child protection issues are costly to societies.

Enyiazu said research has shown that abuse and maltreatment, for example, can lead to life-long physical and mental health problems in children and also negatively impact boys’ and girls’ brain development and educational achievement.

She said this studies have explored the economic and societal impact of childhood violence and neglect as the estimated economic value that Nigeria lost due to some selected health consequences of violence against children in 2014 amounted to US $ 8.9 billion, which represents 1.58 % of the country’s GDP

"The total loss of earnings attributable to childhood VAC was US $6.1 billion, accounting for 1.07 % of Nigeria’s GDP," Enyiazu said.

"Child protection issues are costly and we cannot afford to sit down and play with these issues. We can't call them (children) leaders of tomorrow when we have not done enough or put the necessary things in place to take care of them," she said.

Enyiazu added that there is need for Nigeria to have a strong social work workforce as a critical means to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Stating that social welfare workforce is critical to achieving the SDG, Enyiazu said the goals cannot be achieved without a strong and locally-based social service workforce - who are usually involved in community development services, growth and mental health services, career guidance, substance abuse, care for the elderly among many others.

She also noted that the issues militating against social welfare workforce in Nigeria include: under resource, under funding, misunderstanding of the roles of social workers and under appreciation of the workers in the field.

"We must work together to protect and improve the health and well-being of children, youth, families and communities as outlined in the SDGs.

These outcomes will only be achieved with a strong social welfare workforce strengthened by regulatory mechanism to ensure licensing, certification and registration backed by political financing, technical and moral support," Enyizu added.

Also speaking, Ibrahim Contech , athe UNICEF chief of Enugu field office said there could not have been a better time as Nigeria copes with some socio-economic challenges that continue to undermine sustainable development for vulnerable children and their families.

Contech said the issues of high prevalence of violence against children, conflicts ,terrorism, high number of out of school children ,unemployment rate among other challenges highlight the importance of overhauling the social work profession in Nigeria.

He said this will enable it play its crucial role of supporting the vulnerable population more effectively in mitigating these vicissitudes which undermine access to quality life for children and their families.

"UNICEF as the agency mandated by the UN general assembly to promote the rights of the chidren is committed in supporting partnerships

If he likes, he can release executive order 2019, he will still return to Daura as ex-president come 2019.

PoliticsNEWSBREAKING: President Buhari Releases Executive Order 8 by divinehand2003(op): 6:21am On Oct 11, 2018
President Muhammadu Buhari has released a new Executive Order into law.

The new order is meant to regulate money laundering and tax evasion.

The President released the new Executive Order number eight, tagged “Voluntary Offshore Assets Regularization Scheme, VOARS,” on Wednesday

The new Executive Order (008) took effect from Monday, October 8, 2018, the day it was signed by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity Garba Shehu, made this known in a Facebook post on Wednesday.

Nigerian taxpayers who hold offshore assets and incomes are expected to, within a period of 12 months, declare voluntarily those assets and pay taxes on them by the order.

When they do this, they should expect to derive certain specified benefits.

According to the order, “any taxpayer who truthfully and voluntarily complies with the conditions of the scheme, pays a one-time levy of 35 percent on the total offshore assets or pays all outstanding taxes, penalties and interest after forensic audit of their offshore assets and income shall obtain immunity from prosecution for tax offenses and offences related to offshore assets, among others.

“Equally, failure of any defaulting taxpayer to take advantage of this scheme shall, at the expiration of the scheme result in investigation and enforcement procedures concerning offshore assets anywhere in the world pursuant to information now readily available through automatic exchange of information between Nigeria and foreign countries.”

In accordance with the new order, the Federal Government, through the office of the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice will set up a VOARS in Switzerland for all categories of taxpayers who have defaulted in the declaration of their offshore assets, payment of taxes due and collectible subject to the fulfillment of the terms and conditions as stipulated in the order, or any other subsequent complementary regulations that follow.

To avoid the abuse of this process, the Federal Government makes clear that the “scheme is open to all persons, entities, and their intermediaries holding offshore assets and are in default of their tax obligations in any way, including those who are not already under investigation by law enforcement agencies in Nigeria or any other country and have not been charged with any crimes including theft of public funds or obtaining offshore assets through corrupt practices.”

In signing the order, President Buhari noted that under the Nigerian law, every citizen has the duty to declare his or her income and assets and pay taxes on them but regretted that this, in most instances, had not been the case.

“The sad reality is that efforts to recover these taxes from defaulters through litigation are often frustrated by the complications caused by the change in the character and nature of such assets, insufficient financial intelligence, long delays in courts, among several other reasons,” the President said.

President Buhari is optimistic that the new scheme will help to facilitate the expedient regularization of offshore assets connected to Nigeria and lead to “a new expanded tax base for the Federal Government, and also fund the Nigeria Infrastructure Fund in Switzerland.”

Atiku Vs Buhari: What Wike said after closed-door meeting with PDP flagbearer Published on October 8, 2018 By Seun Opejobi

The Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike has declared that the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, will do everything possible to ensure it takes over power from the All Progressives Congress, APC, in 2019.

Wike made the remark while addressing reporters after a closed-door meeting with the party’s Presidential flag bearer, Atiku Abubakar in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Sunday.

He met with the Waziri of Adamawa shortly after the presidential primaries.

The former vice president had emerged winner of the PDP primary election over the weekend after scoring 1532 votes to beat 12 other contestants who had vied for the party’s ticket.

However, speaking after the meeting, Wike said, “All PDP people are happy. We are one family, you may support aspirant A or aspirant B but once somebody has emerged, you owe it a duty to make sure that your party returns to power.

He described the APC as the “most inefficient and ineffective” party in government, adding that the ruling party had failed Nigerians.

Wike said, “We have no party that will salvage the country other than the PDP. A candidate has emerged and we owe it a duty to see that the party takes over from the most inefficient and ineffective party in control of the federal government.

“So, we are doing everything we can to make sure that we don’t give any gap for APC. They have failed Nigerians and we will do everything to take over in 2019.”

The governor also stated that all hands must be on deck for Abubakar.

“My happiness today is that the convention was successful and it went on without hitches.

In his remarks, Abubakar thanked the governor for hosting the convention. He said the country needs to chart a new direction in the interest of the people.

“I came to personally congratulate the governor, the people and government of Rivers state for hosting a most successful convention,” he said.

“The entire country needs a new government. Definitely, we don’t need APC to return to power in 2019.”
