PoliticsNigerian Youths Not Yet Ripe For Leadership - Okorocha by divinehand2003(op): 7:18am On Dec 27, 2016
Imo state governor Rochas Okorocha has identified ethnicity and bigotry as serious issues in the country’s political landscape.
Okorocha, who said this as part of his Christmas goodwill message released by his Chief Press Secretary Sam Onwuemeodor, noted that as a result of the deep-rooted ethnicity and religious bigotry in the country, the present leaders cannot afford to hand over power to the youths.
Okorocha said for the present generation of youths to have a shot at leadership roles in the country “they need to be well-groomed by the present leaders.”
“What Nigerians, the leaders in particular, need to do now is to unite and begin to build a country of our collective dreams and aspirations.
“The leaders cannot afford to hand over to the next generation what we have at the moment as a nation, in which ethnicity, religious bigotry and zoning of political offices are still the order of the day.
“Nigerians must endeavour to hand over to the next generation, a united and prosperous nation, all the ethnic and religious groups can be proud of.”
On the current economic meltdown, Okorocha called on Nigerians to accept the situation as a national challenge.
He said: “Nigerians especially the leaders should appreciate themselves and see the current recession as a national challenge.”
“Christians in the state in particular to pray more than they had never done before, for the good of the state and her people.”
Recall that Governor Okorocha had recently blamed what he described as lack of peace among past leaders as the major cause for discord among Nigerians.

As soon as one finds his/her way to power, everything that connotes national progress just disappears and GREED takes over. LORD OF THE RINGS is a typical example of what power does to humans in Africa.

PoliticsThe N1.3bn Mortgage Loan For Civil Servants by divinehand2003(op): 4:52am On Dec 26, 2016
The recent launch by the Federal Government of a N1.3 billion refinancing loan to meet civil servants’ housing needs is a welcome development. It is a laudable step towards bridging the nation’s huge housing deficit.

Though far short of the estimated 17 million housing units required, the announcement that 5,635 civil servants will be in the first batch of beneficiaries of the scheme indicates that the first few steps are being taken towards bridging the housing gap.

Unveiling details of the scheme in Abuja last week, Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, explained that the refinancing loan is in collaboration with the Nigerian Mortgage Refinancing Company (NMRC). The scheme, she said, will be open to local and foreign investors through the Public Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement under the Federal Integrated Staff Housing (FISH) programme of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation.

She added that the scheme would be partly financed through the N40 billion earmarked by the Federal Government in the 2016 Appropriation Act to address housing challenges. She described the scheme as a “financing solution that will bring money from the private sector, pension and insurance funds, multilateral and international agencies to drive an intervention in the areas of development finance and mortgage provision.”

While we consider this scheme a step in the right direction, government must demonstrate utmost sincerity of purpose in driving it, for it to have a beneficial impact on the target group. Considering the importance attached to housing globally, it is sad that Nigeria’s housing profile since independence, and indeed, since the present democratic dispensation, leaves much to be desired. Successive governments, at the states and the centre, have failed to attend to this basic need of our people, despite their many promises during political campaigns.

Shelter is not only a basic need of life,  housing is codified as a human right in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Yet, according to World Bank statistics, Nigeria is in deficit of 17 million housing units.

The bigger problem is the political will and funding to close the 17m housing gap. According to the World Bank, the Federal Government will need about N59.5 trillion to bridge this gap. Therefore, in order to avoid the problems of previous housing intervention schemes, it is necessary to make funding more accessible to civil servants at low interest rates. All impediments to the construction of houses in Nigeria, including high cost of land, should be removed. This will require a comprehensive review of the Land Use Act.

We remind all the partners in the refinancing loan, especially the FMBN, of their critical roles in making cheap loan windows available to drive the scheme to success. We say this because affordable housing means housing with associated financial costs that do not threaten other basic human needs.

In that regard, the government should take appropriate steps to ensure that housing costs are proportionate to overall income levels. They should set up subsidies for workers who are unable to acquire affordable housing and protect tenants against unreasonable rent increases as is currently the case in many states.

We advise the National Assembly to review the nation’s mortgage financing system. At present, Nigeria’s mortgage finance (as a share of the Gross Domestic Product) is very low. It is an abysmal 0.5 percent, compared with 80 percent in the United Kingdom, 77 percent in the USA, 31 percent in South Africa and two percent in Ghana. Nigeria’s housing and construction sector accounts for only 3.1 percent of the nation’s GDP. Statistics show that housing production is at 100,000 units per year, while 800,000 units are needed annually.  Besides these obstacles to home ownership, Nigerians face a daily struggle with poverty, unemployment, lack of access to potable water and Low Human Development Index (HDI).

Altogether, we reiterate that overcoming the nation’s housing deficit needs a comprehensive approach that must be in line with best practices. The citizens must, of necessity, have easy access to affordable housing that they can pay for over a reasonable length of time.  Although section 14(2) of the National Housing Fund (NHF) Act of 1992 stipulates that a contributor to the NHF can access a loan from the fund for the purpose of building, purchasing or renovating existing homes/houses, the processes for taking advantage of this loan window is tedious.

With interest rates charged by banks as high as 30 percent, and that by mortgage banks between 20 and 28 percent, it will be difficult for most Nigerians to build their own houses. We hope these high rates will not frustrate the present efforts to deliver affordable housing to civil servants and millions of other Nigerians.

PoliticsNo Power Can Bring Me Down – Wike by divinehand2003(op): 4:22am On Dec 26, 2016
— 26th December 2016

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike has said no power can bring him down because he is solidly and comfortably rooted in God.

Wike spoke at the Rivers State Headquarters of the Living Faith Church in Port Harcourt at a special Christmas service yesterday.

The governor who was accompanied by his wife, Justice Eberechi Suzzette and children said Rivers State will continue to overcome trials and oppressive tendencies because of God’s grace.

According to him, while other states are battling with economic downturn, Rivers State is operating a Jesus economy, which entails divine provision and sustenance.

“If God be for us, nobody can be against us. We have had turbulent times, but we have always come out victorious.

“This state is a Christian state. Therefore, we shall continue to collaborate with the church,” the governor said.

He informed that the government will support schools owned by churches with grants, adding that the ongoing construction of the state Ecumenical Centre will be completed in May 2017.

He noted that the church stood by him right from the campaign period till date and called on the church to continue praying for his administration for God’s protection and wisdom.

In his sermon, Resident Pastor of the church, Peter Ogbondemin said Christmas is relevant because Jesus Christ came to restore divine presence to man.

Highpoint of the celebration was a special prayers for Governor Wike and Rivers State by the congregation.

CrimeMan Runs Away With Neighbour's Baby Son As They Were Preparing For Church (photo by divinehand2003(op): 7:53am On Dec 13, 2016
An unemployed young man, John David, has left a couple, Abdulrahman Balogun and his wife, Bunmi in sorrow after he allegedly abducted their 10-month-old boy.

David and the couple live in Okokwu community, Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Punch Metro learnt that David had pretended to be playing with the kid, Richards, on their premises last Sunday around 7pm and eventually fled with him.

It was gathered that Abdulrahman and Richards were set to leave for a church service that day, and Abdulrahman were waiting outside for Bunmi to dress up.

Abdulrahman, who spoke to Punch correspondent on the telephone on Monday, said he had gone inside to hasten up his wife as they were running late for the service.

“David came to play with him. I went inside to call my wife because we were almost late for the church programme. When I came outside, I could not find David and my son in the compound.
We searched for them everywhere on the premises, but we couldn’t find them. I called his phone number and it indicated that it was switched off. He started living here five months ago,” he said.

The father, a teacher, explained that he subsequently reported the incident at the Mile 3 Police Station, adding that he discovered that he abductor had been bearing a fake name in the neighbourhood after he ran a check on his profile on Facebook.

“His name on Facebook is John Elvis David but we know him as Davies. He moved to this area five months ago. His three friends who lived with him have been arrested by the police.
A woman called me yesterday (Sunday). She said she and David boarded the same bus in Warri around 4pm and that she saw him with my son. She said she was surfing the Internet after she arrived home when she read the post on Richard’s abduction on social media. She said she would have raised the alarm if she had read the post while she was on the bus.
We got married October 2015. That is our first and only child. We are appealing to the public to assist in tracking down the abductor,” he added.

Richard’s mother, Bunmi, said, she was caught unawares by the incident as David was very generous to her son and looked innocuous.

She said, “I never had a cause to be suspicious of him (David). He was friendly with my son. They go out together and he buys things for him. So, I didn’t know he was this wicked.”
