P4VS20: she talk pidgin sha! lmao! first she couldn't read it, now she writes it. What a miraculous transformation.Guy! Miracle still dy happen o |
poshdiva: No Time!Ohh! U even sabi yan pidgin sef.. See levelz o |
aribisala0: I recommend you google the expressionI did buh couldn't find any contradiction to the expression. |
webizone: Over sense dey worry am. If we no fit beat am, we fit use am make money well from fellow gamers. *winks*Na so... |
War Horse: I am shocked that many Nigerian see the question "How was your night?" a problem. I use it a lot and I am yet to come across objections. I fell in love with that question when I heard kenny Rogers' song "She believes in me". In the song, Kenny just came back from a stay-out-late-at-night-and-play-my-song and his lady woke up "and quietly she says how was your night?". Was he expecting Kenny to say he had bad or good fun making---love with his guitar? Why do some Nigerian think rotten all the time?Ur head dy there jaré |
aribisala0: Most people are not complaining about grammar but they find it too intrusive . There has to be some basis for what seems to cross a certain social boundary. If someone spends the night as your guest it may be appropriate or even among friends but at work it seems inappropriate. As far as grammar goes there it is a nonissueI understand you and I made it clear in one of my previous posts that, like slangs and jargons, it can be used informally buh should be avoided in formal settings like in corporate organisations or even unfamiliar people.. The way some people are taking it, it seems it's even a sin. Lol |
aribisala0: There is nothing Grammatically wrong with the expression "how was your night?" What rule exactly is it that is breached in that question? You see! This is my point. If one may ask questions like; how was ur day? How was the party? How was ur examination? How are your family members faring? What then is wrong with "how was your night?" (at least grammatically speaking). If this question is wrong grammatically, then the aforementioned questions must be wrong too.. I don't know why people term it as bad english. People have different perception with the way they see it but that doesn't make wrong. There are even people who take the word "goodbye" as offensive. Them dy feel say u mean say dm no go come bk again or something like that... |
etudaddy: one very wowo girl just meet me one day tell me say she like me oo. Oboy i stayed 3day for hospitalAhan! The thing make u enta coma? |
aribisala0: By the time dem give you answer you sef go regret say you askLol... |
P4VS20: i see say she no talk againAs in ehn... |
aribisala0: Yes it is Nigerian English coined by Nigerians you are absolutely right.Thank you for that... British owns english buh 2day we have British english, american english, australian english, south african english and even international english, just to mention a few. If these other countries can have their own version, what stops Nigeria? I am being taken aback when people complain about Nigeria having certain terms or phrases. Is english not our ligua-franca? Infact! The American version of english has nearly taken over britain. Central London is where one is certain he can get (the queen's english or received pronunciation).. So, make them leave all those ones wey dm dy talk about Nigerians bringing their own version or whatever |
ItsModella: blah blah blah...get the f*ck off if it's lame, I'm sure you were not forced to comment.I never meant to make u feel bad.. Buh, you are now being rude. It's all good sha |
aribisala0: Lame??Is that what you think? Don't you think that word has several meanings aside the adjectival meaning? Lame(leym) noun - Someone who doesn't understand what is going on. |
aribisala0:Y do u treat issues from mid-way instead of starting it at one end? That's lame. Did u read the post I responded to? If you did, u'll discover why I brought that up about transitional verbs. I brought it up to elucidate my point to him that translations are not always correct because he translated "how was ur 9t" to yoruba and said it sounded somehow.. So, try to take things from the omega so you can understand hook, line and sinker. Capiché? |
sleekshedy: If his night is none of your business, his family should also be none of your business. Dem tell you sey na every oyibo sabi English language? Talk Less the once you see on construction sites. All those ones no b white oo. Whites/Caucasians are Americans and/or Europeans. All those lebanese, chinese, indians and d rest no b white o. Besides, I don chat with 1 American woman b4 wey tell me say I write english far more than halve the entire America. So c'mon, no b by white jhor |
I never thought about it like this. I've never really liked the question though I don't think there's anything wrong with it. Maybe the woman cheated on her husband the night before and her concience is pricking her so she didn't want anybody to remind her of the incident....if not I think it's quite unnecessary for anyone to read meaning into a question as simple as that..
No mind her.. I actually use that line buh, whenever I use it, its usually followed with "I hope u had a pleasant rest" to let u know I was concerned about ur 9t rest and no other thing. |
sleekshedy: Even though I don't do It, to me it's the same as asking someone, how was your day?Exactly! If 4 any reason it's bad, then how was ur day will b bad 2 |
nagoma: nonsence! So it is not a greeting , it is a question and after we finished greeting each other you still want to know how my night was? So sorrry but it doesnt make sense to me at all.WTF! Do u regard that as a greeting? Like 4 real? Jeez! Thats way too lame. Which means "how was ur day?" would be regarded as a greeting, right? C'mon! Dnt be so naive |
flops: Indeed it is not entirely wrong since the English language is a mix of different languages and slangs but it is more appropriate between@bold... That was why I said "formal settings" If u wanna talk about native language interpretations, u'll agree with me that most translations are not really correct cuz our native languages lack certain ingredients that makes up a language. Take for instance, in our languages, verbs dont change from present to past or vice-versa. Ex: I went to the Church, yesterday & I will go to the Church for prayerz. Plz, translate these statements to yoruba. The essence of this is to let you knw that, the verbs "go/went" will maintain "ló" in yoruba. That is to say, u can seldom get the actual translation when dealing with our native languages. Don't you agree with me? |
2sexy: yeah based on school things na.. but since I am don with school and back home, we go hook up.Badt guy... |
aribisala0: No need to ask Professors they do not create Languages and a phrase or word exists the moment it has several subscribers. It might be annoying but it does "EXIST" and we need to we wary of the Colo Mentality that prescribes language being disseminated from the top down. Languages NEVER stand still and keep evolving.Take the word GAY for example it means something completely different today and those so called PROFESSORS had to surrender to the change.God bless u jare.. Na by Prof? |
nagoma: What is it then? An Inquest? It's just a question.. And that's why it comes after any form of greeting. Can u see someone in the morning and the first thing to emanates from your mouth is "how was ur night?" without the usual greeting? Surely u must have greeted each other first |
Guilty
Of what? |
flops: The question is awkward and sometimes it is simply inappropriate between ordinary acquaintancesSlangs and Jargons are part of the english language. Do u know that? Buh they are not accepted in formal settings. That could apply here too. U can say it shouldn't be used in formal settings buh that doesn't make it entirely wrong. Don't you agree? |
mrscolite: LOL! It a non issue to me. How was ur night? Oh it was fine, thank u. No one is asking u for details like oh I slept nnakedd or whatever. You wan cuz trouble abi? Go ask person "are u ok?" weda no b curses e go rain put 4 ur head weda na u dm send... Lol we 9jerians knw how 2 read silly meanings 2 tinz |
AdoreKIZITO: Some1 asked me the same question this morning, so i was very anoyed becos he reminded me of my unpleasant night rest.. Pls, Don't ask that question to some1 who slept uner the bridge......Lol |
kennytidistar: YOU GUYS AND GALS SHOULD KNOW THAT NIGHT IS VERY CONFIDENTIAL, MORE OVER THE NIGHT IS DARK AND NOBODY SEEE ANYTHING SO SEVERAL THINGS MAY HAD HAPPEN AT NIGHT UNKNOWN EVEN TO THE PERSON YOU ARE ASKING.Even in the day.. Can u actually take cognizance of everything that happens during the day? Don't you see that question as a remark.. The thing is, how was the 9t 2 u? (general remark).. |
nagoma: "How is your night?" is not an english greeting and there is no answer to it. "Good morning" is the standard english greeeting and the reply is "good morning".WTH! Who say its a form of greeting? |
Nah... I've thought this through and through and I can affirm that, there is certainly nothing wrong with that line; "how was ur nite?" This is used to get a general remark of how it did go. If some proposes that it's wrong, then questions like: how was the party?, how was your day?, etc would be wrong too. The fact is, people usually make mountains out of mole-hills. Dnt be surprised that, that same woman can be be greeted "good morning" and she'll respond with "what's good about the morning?" i no knw wetin dy bite many pple sef. Even tho say sumtin dy wrong with d statement, buh she undastand d reply wey d guy want. Y not just answer "fine" or "my 9t was good" blah blah blah |
webizone: Eis. E don do. Abro, abeg dump these girls come make we play ps3 together. I wan get pes 2013. Omo, na d bomb!Ehen? E make sense wella? |
lefulefu: my brother poshdiva na correct ajepako.make u look her face nah.dat one na proper warri ajepako babe wey dey form jardonSince we fire her, she don run o |
sleekshedy: A bad girl will always be a bad girl, even her name is goodness.Lol... Na by name? If na by name, everybody go dy answer saint na |
