NSNO:
What I expected from Peter Obi vs what Tinubu is doing

On the 25th of February, 2023 I left my house and trekked for over 45 minutes to vote for Peter Obi. I was tired of Buhari and his incompetence and I felt Peter Obi was the right man for the job. I felt he had the guts to take the hard decisions and bring back Nigeria from the edge of collapse. Well we all know what happened; he lost and Pres. Bola Ahmed Tinubu became president much to my displeasure. It's over 2 years now so I want to compare them using a simple format — what I expected from Mr. Peter Obi vs what Pres. Bola Ahmed Tinubu is doing.

1. I expected immediate removal of fuel subsidy from Mr Obi. Fuel subsidy had become a cancer to the economy, sucking us dry and leaving us feeble. Fuel subsidy had to go but successive administrations had been too scared to remove it.
PBAT removed it immediately (at least that's what he told us). I was pleasantly surprised.

2. I expected unification and stabilisation of our exchange rates. At the end of Buhari's regime the disparity between the official FX rate and the black market was around ₦300, that's around 80% of the official rate of ₦460 ± ₦5. This gap encouraged corruption and discouraged investment. We needed stability in the FX market and that stability required liberalisation. liberalisation that will devalue the Naira and increase our hardship. I expected Obi to do just that and I thought PBAT will not be bold enough to do it. I was wrong, again. Colour me surprised.

3. I expected Mr. Obi to pay off the backlogs of loans and FX owed to multinationals with the money saved from the aforementioned measures thereby reducing our debt servicing to revenue ratio and showing the world our business readiness. PBAT is doing all this.

4. I expected tax reforms from Oga Obi. Nigeria cannot continue like this. A country where taxes are merely a suggestion for the vast majority of its citizens cannot thrive. We need money and we need it now. I didn't think PBAT will even think of doing it but again I was wrong. I don't know yet how effective the new tax reforms will be like but I believe it'll be alot better than what we have now.

5. I expected Mr. Peter Obi to be bold and decisive. I needed someone who has the political will and power to make the changes he wants. One of the reasons I dislike Mr. Jonathan was his indecisiveness. Oga say something and stand by it. Peter Obi was that man to me but PBAT has surprised me. He has stayed strong on tax reforms, fuel subsidy, fx rate etc.

6. I also expected huge gains in security from Peter Obi. PBAT is still lacking in this area but we've all seen how the security agencies have been neutralising terrorists in their hundreds.

7. I also expected increased infrastructural spending and I knew we will need loans for that which is why I was impressed with the 2025 - 2027 MTEF. It was beautiful. From roads to ports to rail, just what Nigeria needs right now. Again colour me surprised.

Now Nigeria has a lot of problems but these ones listed were what I expected within the first few years of Peter Obi's administration and I am surprised (there's that word again) by PBAT.

There are a lot of things that he has not done and a lot of areas where he is lacking (Wike, bloated Lagos-calabar highway, Edo gubernatorial election etc) but compared to the disaster I expected, he is doing better.

Like the saying; the darkest hour is just before dawn, Nigeria's dawn is almost here, we just have to endure the darkness a little longer.
PoliticsRe: Reply: 2027: Tinubu Has Taken Over South. Which South Mr Fayose? by DMerciful(m): 1:09pm On Jul 26, 2025
So you think educated Southern Nigeria will vote for Tinubu that has failed woefully because of politicians defecting to APC against Obi who has been showing workings?

Tinubu is gone by 2027. The reason you're rooting for Atiku is to fall back on if Tinubu cannot have it, then certainly not Obi. You're looking for consolation
helinues:
That was in 2023. We are talking about 2027 election where allegiance have shifted.

Be realistic and stop being optimistic
PoliticsRe: Reply: 2027: Tinubu Has Taken Over South. Which South Mr Fayose? by DMerciful(m): 1:05pm On Jul 26, 2025
Obi will defeat Atiku in Adamawa and in the North.

Obi has South South and South East on lockdown

Peter Obi is the next president of the federal republic of Nigeria.

Atiku blew his chances when he should have suppported GEJ and become president when it returned to the North
Linzo:
This is a response to Mr. Fayose regarding his statement: “2027: Tinubu Has Taken Over the South, He Needs Little Votes From the North.”

Atiku has stepped aside and left the PDP for those of you who sabotaged it—likely for financial benefits from Tinubu—ultimately burying your political careers in Nigeria for good. As things stand today, none of you who sold out the PDP for peanuts can even win a councillorship election in your own wards, including Wike, Ugwuanyi, and others.

So please, let Atiku be. You claim Tinubu has "captured the South" and only needs a few votes from the North—but which South are you referring to? You deliberately avoid specifics, because we all know the South-South and South-East are no-go areas for Tinubu. And we have people from those regions on Nairaland who can confirm this—no jokes. Obi dominates both zones, whether you like it or not—that’s the plain truth.

Now you admit Tinubu has lost the North, yet you claim Obi will come second. So you’re suggesting Obi will get most of his votes from the North to come second? That’s laughable. The truth is, you're clearly afraid of Atiku. You're only pushing for Obi to contest so Atiku won't gather enough votes from the South.

But let’s be honest—Atiku already has the North locked down. He only needs a reasonable showing in the South. And with Obi’s on the same ticket with Atiku, then Obi tsunami in the South, PBAT is finished. All of you will be politically retired and likely paying visits to the EFCC.

So just relax. After the 2027 elections, many of you corrupt politicians will face the kind of prison system we see in El Salvador. You’ll learn the hard way.

PoliticsRe: The Fear Is Real — Why The Atiku–obi Combo Terrifies The APC by DMerciful(m): 12:54pm On Jul 26, 2025
Let me assure you something, Obi will never run as vice president especially because he is the best among all the aspirants including Tinubu
ibabz:
Statistics don’t lie and sometimes, na statistics we go chop.

When you examine the numbers closely, it becomes immediately clear why the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Bola Tinubu’s political handlers will do everything and anything possible to ensure that a political reunion between Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi never sees the light of day.

In the 2019 general election, when Atiku Abubakar ran under the PDP with Peter Obi as his running mate:

PDP (Atiku/Obi) secured 11,262,978 votes. But APC (Buhari/Osinbajo) won with 15,191,847 votes

Now compare that with Tinubu’s 2023 victory.

APC (Tinubu/Shettima) won with just 8,794,726 votes. That’s 6.4 million fewer than Buhari's tally in 2019

Meanwhile, Atiku (PDP, 2023) still managed 6,984,520 votes amd Peter Obi (Labour Party) secured 6,101,533 votes.

That’s a combined total of over 13 million votes, nearly 5 million more than Tinubu, even while Atiku and Obi ran on separate platforms.

Let’s be honest: Tinubu didn’t win with a mandate, he won with mathematics.

He won simply because the opposition was fragmented between Atiku, Obi, and Kwankwaso.

Tinubu knew in 2023 that he could never cross 12 million votes, not in a post-#EndSARS Nigeria where the youth were still reeling from pain, anger, and distrust. He knew that a united Atiku–Obi ticket of likely over 12million votes could crush his chances.

So he split them.

That division was not by accident, it was a political necessity for survival.

Now add the fact that:

The North is disillusioned with Tinubu’s administration: Inflation, insecurity and lopsided appointments have left many northerners feeling betrayed and excluded. Buhari’s legacy vote bank of over 12 million is now up for grabs.

If Atiku can reclaim even half of that northern base and Obi mobilizes the southern youth, they’re looking at 12 to 15 million votes in 2027. The number Tinubu can never reach, considering his performance.

That number would obliterate Tinubu’s 2023 scoreline and turn the next election into a referendum against a failed presidency.

Now that the North is murmuring and agitating, Tinubu’s 2023 formula won’t work in 2027. His voting power in the North has dramatically dropped and he knows it.

So what’s the new plan?
Enter Rabiu Kwankwaso, the “anointed pawn”.

All signs suggest Tinubu’s camp may try to push Kwankwaso as a northern counterweight, a spoiler to split votes from Atiku and minimize the northern swing against APC.

But it’s a dangerous gamble.

If the North senses it’s being played, and the South regroups behind Obi, the result could be a historic backlash at the polls.

This is why there's a quiet but strategic effort to lure Peter Obi back into the PDP not to empower him, but to neutralize him.

A Peter Obi + Atiku Abubakar ticket isn’t just a political comeback, it’s a revolution of numbers, energy, and regional balance.

The numbers prove one thing:
They didn’t win because they were strong. They won because the opposition was divided.

And if the Atiku–Obi combo reemerges with better strategy, a stronger ground game, and national discontent on their side, APC’s worst nightmare may finally come true.

Obi will run with either El Rufai, Tambuwal or Datti.

Obi will accept presidential ticket by concensus. He knows the machinations of Tinubu and his ability to sponsor aspirants in rival political parties.
ogmask:
My advise to Peter Obi is to be focussed.
He should watch before he leaps.
The troubles of the PDP are far from over. Until the likes of damagun and other moles in the PDP is wiped out the party will not move forward.
In my opinion, Obi running as the candidate on any platform will fall short. He should collaborate with a strong northern candidate. At this point there's nothing like the turn of the South. It's time to take off the gloves and fight. When tinubu, a Muslim, chose another Muslim in shetima to deputies, "the turn of a Christian deputy" didn't stop his victory. Obi should work with a strong northerner in 2027 and run afterwards.
