I am sure using your modem beats the hell out sitting in one of those stinky "cyba kafs" waiting for yahoo to load.
this was not available 5 - 10 years ago so i am sure sooner or late the tech has to improve, i am sure it didn't happen overnite in Ghana either.
You also need to be aware of false advertizing in NGR - we are good at this, i remember pulling my hair out trying to "blazing fast starcomms" a while back, ogba suru,

Your question is like "how deep is the atlantic ocean"?
You customer gave you requirements abi?
What are they? Does he have a budget?
Does he have the PC's already? Does he want to go wireless or wired?
LAN or WAN? Does he care if you use switches or hubs?
Does he plan on growing his network or is it fixed?

All these question help determine what you customer wants and you can quote accordingly.

Good luck

VB Bulletin is quite cool,
It can't be free as there are support and development costs to cover unlike open source where it is a community or parapo effort.
You basically get what you pay for.

Webmasters / Re: Must I Pay 350k For A .com.ng Domain by Dokki: 6:32pm On Mar 07, 2010
From the ICANN site http://www.icann.org/en/faq/#gltdrules

Someone else has registered my company's name as a domain name. What is the process for resolving my complaint?

All ICANN-accredited registrars follow a uniform dispute resolution policy. Under that policy, disputes over entitlement to a domain-name registration are ordinarily resolved by court litigation between the parties claiming rights to the registration. Once the court rules on who is entitled to the registration, the registrar will implement that ruling. In disputes arising from registrations allegedly made abusively (such as "cyber-squatting" and ?cyber-piracy"wink, the uniform policy provides an expedited administrative procedure to allow the dispute to be resolved without the cost and delays often encountered in court litigation. In these cases, you can invoke the administrative procedure by filing a complaint with one of the dispute-resolution service providers.

I want a domain that has recently expired, but the registrar won't release it. How can I get the name?

Section 3.7.5 of the Registrar Accreditation Agreement requires registrars to delete domain registrations after a second notice and a grace period, unless there are "extenuating circumstances." Some examples of such "extenuating circumstances" might include ownership disputes, payment disputes, or lame server delegations. Only the registrar would know exactly why it hasn't yet deleted a particular name. No specific dates or deadlines are prescribed in the current provisions.

ICANN has not yet adopted a uniform policy concerning the handling of expired domain names. If you're interested in helping to craft such a policy, you can learn more about ICANN's bottom-up, consensus-based process for making new policies at ICANN's website.

Basically what all of the above says is that it a a grey area simply for the reasons that ICANN cannot enforce the issue with all the regional bodies. What goes on in Russia is different from the USA from China.
I don't believe that a domain name is trademarkable,

There are plenty of examples where the owners of a trademarked name has taken the owner of the domain name to court and lost. Good examples of this are the Whitehouse, Nissan, Bruce Springsteen, Kevin Spacey.

The only real deterent to this is the threat of long drawn out law suits which will be costly however this does not prevent people from doing it.

All in the name of free enterprise.

Webmasters / Re: Must I Pay 350k For A .com.ng Domain by Dokki: 2:25am On Mar 07, 2010
@abhosts - your info is completely false.
If you happen to stumble upon any domain that has not been registered or has even expired you can register it for $10 or less.
So if Mr. B Gates forgets to mail the check for MIcrosoft.com when it expires someone else will be the owner next day believe me and it is fully legit.

There is no separate fee for a premium vs any other domain name

Webmasters / Re: Must I Pay 350k For A .com.ng Domain by Dokki: 2:20am On Mar 07, 2010
Is this the dark ages or what?!?!?!?!
You had the good sense and fortune to register a nice domain before some madness called NIRA sprung up and now wants to extort money from you??
This is how commerce and innovation is stiffled in Nigeria. You can get any domain you want for $10 or less in the developed countries.
Why should they care what type of domain name you have as long as you pay for it? Amazing!

So you have the good fortune to buy land and a house in Lekki P1 and then someone comes and tells you you have to pay more for it after the fact because it is worth more now?

Can you hear me loading the bullets into my revolver?

Maybe i am missing something here,

I wish you all the best in your struggle with this, keep us updated.

Computers / Re: AMD Vs Intel Which Processors Are Better? by Dokki: 1:45am On Mar 07, 2010
I predict AMD will be bought out soon and their chips used for other things apart from computers.

They just can't keep up with Intel sadly as competition is good for the consumer.

Check out the new Intel Nehalem processor - AMD has no answer for this.
From a presentation i attended with IBM, Intel is going to drop their latest 6 core processor in the next 2 months - YES THAT IS 6 PROCESSORS in ONE, simply AWESOME so soon your basic 2 cpu box will have 12 CPU's in it.

If AMD has any fight in them now is the time to counter - we shall see!

Database management IMO
Check out what DBA's and SAP consultants earn - na die!

In the western hemisphere it all about collecting data, mining it and using it for business intelligence.
This will be coming over very soon as companies start to look for competitive advantage and the onset of out sourcing to reliable low cost centers in Africa.

Good luck in which ever field you choose as i don't think you can go wrong in the long run.

Computers / Re: Any Datacenter In Nigeria (Lagos)? by Dokki: 1:27am On Mar 07, 2010
Yeah right!
Good luck with that,
Let me see, the minor basics required in order of importance are
* UNINTERUPTED POWER SUPPLY
* Power stabilization
* HVAC systems with greater than 3 tons of cooling
* Couple of backup generators (working generators that is, with plenty of fuel on standby)
* Broadband Internet in excess of T3/E3 speeds
* Dedicated technical support for all the above on call or within 30mins drive away,

The above is just for starters,

Even Dangote with all his money can't guarantee all this, which is why he is in the sugar business grin
