Hello Chief,

Sorry to butt in but I’ve seen your post quite a few times and I’m sorry about your experience but I’ll like to share mine to encourage you + the steps I took.

I’m in the UK and I applied for a Canadian student visa on 3rd April. Somehow, I got granted a visiting visa I had applied for since February of 2020 (just before Covid lockdown) later that April (last month). I got a correspondence letter for my study visa in the same April and everything went silent.

I sent my passport for the visit visa stamp and on the day I got it back (last week), I sent a mail to the London office politely asking why they granted the visit visa instead of the student visa. In 30 mins, the office replied with an apology and a PPR notification.

I’ve sent my passport back to them.

All I’m saying is, you should send a message to the London office - if you haven’t already.

Our situations are somewhat alike. Both my spouse and I are currently on work visas in the U.K. My spouse has submitted an application to study Nursing in Canada (Jan 2024 intake) since March this year, but we haven't received any feedback yet. It has been 10 weeks since the application was submitted, and my spouse applied independently.

On another note, I have been in contact with a woman I met on Nairaland, whose spouse is on a study visa here in the U.K. Unfortunately, her study permit application was denied because her U.K. dependent visa was set to expire within six months, and home ties.

I would recommend that your spouse applies from Nigeria if possible, but there is no harm in trying to apply from the U.K.

Elders, I’ve come again o.

So, I’ve been house hunting and somehow, I came across a Nigerian offering a 2 bed on Facebook. I contacted him and he replied that the property is still available (just that he’s out of town on work assignment). He sent some pictures and I went to check the house at the address (the exterior still has the sold signage from the realtors).

He’s sent me the online document agreement but I’m of the opinion that he should send the keys to a trusted person who can show us the inside. I’ve also asked to get on a video call with him (so he can know us and we, him) but he said his phone just spoilt yesterday (I be naija boy sha).

His email name sef na one English name, different from the Nigerian name on the document and email ID. I’m seeing too many red flags and I don’t want my desperation to get the best of me.

Here are some screenshots.

Elders in the house. I have a question about council tax.

I thought the student council tax exemption covers the entire household for the duration of full-time studies or am I wrong?

I’ve heard from two prospective landlords now who are saying it only covers the student and that their partners are expected to pay council tax.

I remember getting a council tax bill of around £1200 in Nov/December but I called to tell them we applied for exemption. They requested we send a signed copy of the schools exemption letter which I did the next day and since then nothing.

Does the exemption cover the entire household or

Elders in the house, e good morning o.

So, I noticed most homes for rent are owned by Asian or Brit women (or at least, their husbands say the wives are the landlords but they’re just showing the property). While I’m not saying women can’t own homes, I’d like to know if there are added advantages to being a female homeowner.

Or could it be that the primary residence is owned by the men - in that case, are there hidden advantages to the arrangement?

Brothers and sisters in the house. I’m back again.

Say there are two options.

Company A is offering x amount + profit sharing and company B is offering (x+5k).

Which option is the best?

I’m wary of using the benefits part in A because someone said (share benefits and share losses too). Even if that’s not true, one doesn’t know how they calculate profit and the % of profit that’ll be added on. Also, what if the company doesn’t record “that much profit to go round or make the option worth it.”

It’s all a mix. But I’ll like to hear you guys’ opinion on it. Have you been in the situation? Any advice?

You are far too kind and trusting.

As mimilyrics advised, keep all your valuables safe.

Also, I’ll trust your madam to handle this better because you’re the gentle person (you gave him till next week Friday or Saturday, so kind of you).

Please, let this also be a lesson that while women can sometimes be wrong, they’re often better judge of characters.

I wish you all the very best as you put this free loader out.

All I have to say is, No good deed goes unpunished.

While you were being a gentleman about this, you allowed him cross so many boundaries that your authority in that house is now threatened.

One of two things, you either stand your ground and put him out (change your locks if need be) or he’ll continue to freeload, eat your sweat, and disrespect you in your own home.

My 2 cent.

babajeje123:
Advise needed please.
Now I am begining to understand why most Nigerians here don't want to accomodate newcomers who are Nigerians. I accommodated a guy who is becoming difficult for me to handle just because I don't like wahala. We lived in the same house in Nigeria and during those period we were never friends.

Thank you.

As for the salary expectation, I do know what the senior roles command but I believe I should wait until an offer is made before negotiating the heck out of it.

This nairaland thread has been of great help. Happy to be a part of here.

AlphaUno:

So far, you have been smart about your response, you can only hope for the best.

Meanwhile, always ensure you do a detailed research on pay, it’s part of the deal (you can get a good pay based on your negotiating skill) here; unlike in 9ja that the question usually has no impact.

Thank you so much. I just needed to hear it from someone else.

Also, thanks for the huge advice in the later part of your post. I’ve been a little skeptical because some interviewers have been a little bit dismissive of my US experience (stating it’s not native to the UK). But surely, some see the synergy and I’ll punch up for more senior roles.

Amarathripple0:

Yes people get rejected for being over qualified (happened to me, they said I would run after 2 months Lol). However, just like you experienced, people have been pushed up to interview for more senior positions after an application because they appeared to be qualified for those roles as opposed to wasting their talent in a junior position. So don’t overthink it, also do not have any emotional attachment to that job/company, see them as just a number and keep on applying and interviewing with other companies until you get an offer and you sign! Also, as a plus, see this as your cue to start applying for more senior positions that you are actually qualified for. Do not limit yourself.

Guys, I’m back again. Please help as I’m second guessing this.

So, I had a second stage interview with a company recently. During this interview, the interviewer noted that I am overqualified for the job role and mentioned two other senior roles - asking which I’d love to go for.

I explained that I wasn’t sure if those roles were available within the company as I’d applied for the one available. But I won’t mind taking the more senior role as I could double down and do the junior role when there’s shortage/an extra hand is needed.

He also asked about the salary expectations and I told him I understood the salary offered for the junior position but won’t name a figure since he’s asked about a more senior role (was trying to play it smart make he no go give me junior salary for senior role - if considered).

I’ve read something about people being rejected for being overqualified for roles.

I guess my question is, is this really much of a dealbreaker? (I know it’s their decision but your advise could help for later needs)

Hello house and to the elders here.

I have a bit of an issue I need clarity on.

I work for a company in the US prior to moving here in September (Payoneer payment). I also have some private clients I work with and get paid via Upwork (it’s an easier option as PayPal doesn’t support Nigerian accounts). Ultimately, both earnings end up in my Payoneer account.

I’ve moved to the UK (student dependent) and I’m at the final stage of some interviews that look good (I intend to juggle any job in the UK with the existing setup as it’s pretty easy for me).

Question is, do I have to report the US earnings for UK tax purposes (I don’t intend to touch the $), what about the Upwork payments received for services offered?

Kindly enlighten me please.

Visa Alert!!!

This is perhaps one of the most testing journeys I’ve embarked upon in a long while.

Getting a biometric date was a big hassle so we selected assisted service for MA and self service for dependents. This was during the time people slept on TLS Ikeja website and couldn’t get dates for MA.

Biometrics for family of 3 - 29th June (we did walk in with our son)

Main applicant was served 3 NSFs (1 empty, 2 document request for TB certificate and academic documents)

Dependents got 1 NSF each on day 14 of application

After 3rd NSF for MA, we decided to send all documents, including education, POF, CAS, TB, etc.

Decision made 27th July.

Collection mail for MA and 1 Dependent - August 3.

Then the wait started. Our 2 year old’s passport didn’t move. We called, escalated, and waited. Escalation team sent an email on 14th day of escalation asking us to be patient as they work on it.

We became anxious as school mandated September 13th as last day to resume. We called again and UKVI said we either re-escalate and wait another 15 working days or do nothing and wait. We chose the latter by faith.

Mind you, at this point, our rented apartment had started reading and we were losing money already, 2 weeks rent gone.

Finally, dependent’s application moved to VAC 8 days after escalation team contacted us - September 8
Collection - September 9.

I’ve detailed this because I found that not many people talked about escalation and the timeline it took to get their passports back. The wait can be crazy and disturbing, the UKVI agents can be nonchalant, but it’ll all be worth it in the end.

Thank you all for the help, I’ve followed this thread for the last one year, read through chapter 6,7, and now 8! And I can say it’s a treasure trove of information. You guys are the best.

VISA ALERT!!!!

Truly what God cannot do, does not exist! This journey started back in Oct 2021.My MA Applied to a school, was accepted, and UNILAG transcript was sent to them in Feb this year.

In March this year, MA eventually settled for a different school which has better ranking but transcript became an issue due to ASU strike. Eventually, we had to go to the old school to request for the transcript which we then sent to the new school. I must say that God has His ways of doing things because the admission to the new school would never have been possible otherwise.

Visa Application Date: 18th June
Biometrics for all 4 of us: 30th June
TLS : Ikeja
Paid Mail: 19th July ( decision has been made received on 20th of July)
TLS pick up notification for MA and Spouse : Friday, 22nd of July

Dependent ( 2 Children)
Evidence of Previous Travels
Birth Certificates
Family Photos
Second Citizenships declared
Consent Letter for each child signed by both Parents
TB certificate

No NSF was received.

Couldn’t find the IHS details for one of the children so I cancelled and filled a new application on 19th July. ( the IHS and Visa fees was automatically reversed to my GTB Dom account on 24th of July)

I’m immensely thankful to everyone for your contributions on this page, I learnt a lot and it helped in crossing all the Ts and dotting the Is correctly.

I had days where doubt would overwhelm me but coming here and reading people’s testimonies helped to keep my faith alive.

@Duchess, you are a Star! Keep shining. Also, kudos to everyone else. I’m so thankful for this community and I pray that everyone else hoping and waiting should continue to trust in God, it will end in praise and May the land of UK favor us all in Jesus name, Amen.

Amen.

You can use any of the options.

There are people on here who have used app generated bank statements. Some have used bank printed and scanned statement. And some have used the “send to embassy” option.

Hello, It’s possible to do that.

Alternatively, you can ask her to send the application link and make the payment for them.

I’ve read some people say their Payment was declined, possibly due to IP issues.

Hello, there’s no other way to pay for IHS and visa fee. I advise that you get a dom $$ card or a prepaid $$ card to make the payment.

Alternatively, you can send your application link to a TRUSTED person in the UK or US to make the payment.

I said trusted because you don’t want anyone using a fraud card
