Erstwhile Senior Special Assistant to President Goodluck Jonathan on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe has vented his anger on those he believes are determined to defame his person, praying God to unleash his wrath on them.

This was as he swore that if claim by an online news site that he used certain companies to receive money from Jonathan to hack ‘unfriendly websites’ is true, “let all the curses in the Bible be upon me.”

Disclosing this on Twitter, Okupe said he did not refrain from also asking God to curse him if the accusations against him were rightly so.

He tweeted, “I have read the falsehood by Premium Times about me. Before God, who I fear and serve the story is untrue and planted to defame me. I will respond tomorrow. It is a wonderful country where the innocent is disparaged and reputation damaged on the alter of partisanship.

“My prayer for tonight is Jehovah that rules the affairs of men, I beseech you, if I as much have knowledge of what I am accused of by Premium times let all the curses in Bible be upon me but if I am innocent let your wrath fall on all those who have a hand in this accusation and let it b seen by all.”

Not yet satisfied, Okupe tweeted again: “Those who are looking for every opportunity to bring me down and destroy my reputation will fail and be put to shame. The lies in the story are unsustainable.”

Following with another post, “Doyin okupe vs Premium Times: #TruthShallPrevail”, he tweeted: “I want to assure all my friends and well wishers that this wicked & deliberate falsehood will not stand. I do not know any of the companies.”

PoliticsDrama As Jimoh Ibrahim Sack Newswatch MD, DMD On Live TV by DONSMITH123(op): 2:33pm On Jan 18, 2016
Energy Group Chairman and billionaire businessman, Jimoh Ibrahim has sacked the Managing Directors of his media companies over unpaid salaries of workers.

At a public lecture on the Energy Group 5th GMD Conference, aired live on AIT on Monday, unpaid journalists of Newswatch Newspapers, Newswatch Magazine and National Mirror Newspapers had stormed the ongoing conference holding at NICON Luxury Hotel, Abuja, demanding the payment of their 13 months’ unpaid salaries.

Displaying placards, asking Ibrahim to clear the unpaid salaries , the journalists, under the aegis of Nigerian Union of Journalists, NUJ, sang protest songs and took over the venue of the conference.

The chanted solidarity songs, insisting that Ibrahim address the salary issue before the conference could continue.

Ibrahim, who could not hide his anger midway into the conference, continued to blast company heads who could not generate their own money to pay salaries despite heavy investment in the business.

The first to get the axe was the MD of Newswatch who was sacked on TV in a very dramatic fashion.

Visibly under tension, the bosses of the newspapers in the conference knew there was trouble. And trouble eventually came when Ibrahim, suddenly, verbally appointed one the directors in the conference as new head of the Newswatch.

Subsequently, he announced that he would help to pay some of the companies owing six months salaries but on the condition that the Managing Directors and Deputy Managing Directors of the companies step aside.

He stated that any of his companies that does not pay up all salaries owed by December 31, 2016, will be shut down.

Ibrahim, however, announced that the affected bosses should forward their resignation letter via email before they get termination letters from him.

PoliticsNational Officers Ask Metuh, Secondus To Step Down by DONSMITH123(op): 12:14pm On Jan 18, 2016
There appears to be a fresh round of crisis in Nigeria’s major opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party, with some elected national officers calling on the acting chairman of the board of trustees, Bello Mohammed and the national publicity secretary, Olisa Metuh, to step down from their offices.

The call, which was made in a statement signed by four of the national officers, which they also said represented the views of all deputy national officers and some members of the National Executive Committee of the party, was sequel to the ongoing trial of Messrs. Mohammed and Metuh over corruption allegations.

Messrs Metuh and Mohammed are being tried for receiving monies from the embattled former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, out of the $2.1 billion meant for arms procurement but which was diverted to political spending.

The statement, made available to PEMIUM TIMES on Monday, was signed by Dennis Alonge-Niyi, the deputy national youth leader; Bashir Maidugu, the deputy national legal adviser; Okey Nnaedozie, the deputy national organizing secretary and Abdullahi Jalo, the deputy national publicity secretary.

The national officers called on all relevant members and organs of the party to rescue it “from fortune hunters who have hijacked its very soul.”
They said, “We hereby strongly dissociate the Peoples Democratic Party from the ongoing trials of Dr. Bello Halliru Mohammed ( Acting Chairman of Board of Trustees) and Chief Olisa Metuh ( National Publicity Secretary) on various charges anti graft agencies.

“They are said to have received funds using accounts of their private companies without the knowledge and instructions of any organ of the party. All those mentioned in the ongoing corruption trial are, therefore, on their own and the party was not involved financially or in anyway with the office of the National Security Adviser, ONSA, or any organ of the federal government in the last regime.
“They must bear full responsibility for their actions and must henceforth refrain from dragging the name of the party into the mud.”

Step down please
The national officers also said that sequel to the wide public interest the trial of Messrs. Mohammed and Metuh has generated, they would call on the national caucus of the PDP, the BoT and the PDP Governors’ Forum “to prevail on the two accused persons to honorably step down until they clear their names thereby saving the party from further damage.”

They said their call was not a pronouncement of guilt on the two officers of the PDP, but a “passionate appeal to halt the erroneous concept that the party tolerates corruption.”

They also called on the NEC of the party to convene a meeting immediately to formalize the appointment of a new spokesperson in line with the party’s constitution.

The officers also called on the NEC not to continue with the reign of impunity, which they said characterized the PDP in the past and led it to its current position, to respect the Abuja High Court ruling of December 15 last year.
The Court had in a ruling delivered in a suit filed by a former political adviser to former President Goodluck Jonathan, Ahmed Gulak, directed the PDP acting national chairman, Uche Secondus, to step down and allow either Mr. Gulak or any qualified person from the north east to take over.
Mr. Secondus became acting chairman after Ahmadu Muazu resigned his position following the defeat of the party in the last general election.

“This is a declaratory ruling where no order of stay of execution from any other court has been granted. The NEC must do the needful by selecting a suitable national chairman from the north east to complete their tenure in accordance with our tradition and the party’s constitution.
“In pursuance of this therefore, Prince Uche Secondus should revert back to his constitutional position of Deputy National Chairman of the party as a matter of urgency,” they said.
The national officers also argued that in the light of the court ruling and other matters related to it, the timetable recently released by the National Working Committee, without recourse to the NEC, for the forthcoming national convention of the party should be considered null and void.

They said aside from the offices of the National Chairman, National Secretary, National Financial Secretary and the National Auditor, the national convention that produced the other national officers was held on August 30, 2013.
They said based on the four-year tenure envisaged by the constitution of the party, all the remaining officers’ tenure of office would terminate on August 30, 2017.

They also called on the NEC to order a proper audit of the finances of the PDP by certified external auditors. They said the audit period should be from March 2012 to date.
“All committees set up by the irregularly constituted national working committee should be dissolved and new committees constituted by NEC in good faith and the general interest of the party.
“Finally, we urge the National Caucus and the Board of Trustees as a matter of urgency to convene a meeting of NEC to address all these burning issues. Any further delay will exacerbate the situation,” they said.

Serving and former elected office holders on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, weekend, adopted resolutions to retool the former ruling party, including a decision to jettison the principle of zoning in the election of a new national chairman.

In its stead, the PDP bigwigs, including governors, senators, lawmakers and former ministers, at the end of a meeting in Lagos resolved that the principle of zoning would be adopted only after a formidable new national chairman with weight and integrity has emerged.

The PDP stakeholders met at the Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos at the meeting that was hosted by the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu and had Senator Biodun Olujimi as MC. Senator Ekweremadu is the highest elected office holder on the platform of the party.

The meeting, Vanguard gathered, was essentially meant to frame strategies on how to push forward the party and also respond to the perceived actions of the APC which party stalwarts alleged to be acts of persecution.

At the end of the meeting, the governors, lawmakers and former ministers resolved to form a committee to search for a credible person to lead the party as national chairman from any part of the country.

The party stalwarts, it was learned, said the zoning of party positions at the forthcoming national convention would be hinged on where the person chosen as national chairman comes from.

“What we decided was to establish a committee to search for a formidable and credible national chairman following which all other national offices would be zoned,” a participant at the meeting said.

The committee so formed, it was gathered, would work with the Governor Olusegun Mimiko-led PDP Governors Forum on the choice.

Besides, the meeting also decided to constitute a committee that will help prepare the party to respond to what party stakeholders at the meeting described as the persecutions from the APC-led government.

All the party caucuses were present at the meeting. Ekweremadu led the PDP senators to the meeting, while Rep. Leo Ogor led the House of Representatives caucus and Governor Olusegun Mimiko led the PDP governors including Governors Ayo Fayose of Ekiti State, Dairus Ishaku of Taraba, Ibrahim Damkwambo of Gombe, Deputy Governor of Delta State, Kingsley Otaru, among others.

The stakeholders were pleased with the presence of former governor of Cross River State, Mr. Donald Duke, who was making a presence at a national PDP stakeholders meeting for the first time in about eight years.

Meanwhile, the PDP national leadership yesterday said that the alleged persecutions of the APC led administration were making the party to become stronger.

The party said that APC having realized that it lacked what it takes to deliver its campaign promises to Nigerians has resorted to intimidation and harassment of the opposition through a witch-hunt policy.

National Secretary of PDP, Prof. Adewale Oladipo said in a statement on Sunday that in “a desperate mood to cover up its obvious lapses and the clear lack of governance direction in the last eight months, the APC administration has plunged all its energy seeking imaginary PDP faults.

“In all democracies, viable opposition is recommended for stability and growth of society, but the APC in is seeking to decimate opposition so foist its dictatorial agenda of installing one party state without economic direction and where the rights of the citizens are trampled under-foot.

“Nigerians have seen through the campaign deceptions and the now unfolding agenda of the APC and are now apprehensive about the health of the country as the reality of the type of party and leaders they voted into power gradually dawns on them.

“They have watched carefully as all essential values of a viable democracy are being destroyed; the other arms of government, the judiciary and legislature have been caged under with each now struggling to survive.

“We are all witnesses of the brazen abuse of human rights of citizens, arrest and detention without trial, disregard for court orders and the impunity being displayed by various security agencies in the last eight months.

“Also obvious to Nigerians now is the use of the fight against corruption as means of settling scores with perceived enemies as is the case with key PDP leaders including its Spokesman, an action that is ostensibly aimed at silencing the opposition from looking in and exposing the incompetence, and the double standard of the administration.

“We invite Nigerians and the international community to continue to note that while the government continues to harass PDP leaders and abuse their rights, very obvious corrupt cases involving notable APC leaders have been brushed aside.”

“The PDP however reiterates its support for the fight against corruption but insists that its conduct must have integrity, must be fair, credible, just and must follow due process and rule of law.

“Finally, the PDP assures its numerous supporters across the country of the dividends of the on-going rebuilding and re-engineering process in the party to re-position the party for the electoral challenges ahead especially as it has become clear that APC lacks the capacity to handle governance and provide economic direction for the country, but has only succeeded in injecting bad blood and division among Nigerians resulting in the current threats to national cohesion and stability.

PoliticsAlleged N400m Fraud: EFCC Files 7-count Charge Against Metuh by DONSMITH123(op): 6:39am On Jan 15, 2016
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, yesterday, preferred seven-count criminal charge against detained National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Mr. Olisa Metuh.
Metuh and his firm, Destra Investment Limited, were charged before the Abuja Division of the Federal High Court over alleged N400 million fraud.

The charge marked FHC/ABJ/CR/05/2016, was signed by the Assistant Director, Legal & Prosecution Department of the EFCC, Mr. Sylvanus Tahir.

The filing process was perfected, yesterday, by EFCC lead prosecutor, Mr. Rotimi Jacobs, SAN. The charge against Metuh borders on alleged money laundering, breach of trust and criminal diversion of public funds.

Specifically, EFCC, alleged that Metuh had in November 2014, collected N400 million from the erstwhile National Security Adviser, NSA, Col. Sambo Dasuki, (retd).

The fund, which was withdrawn from an account of the Office of the NSA operated with the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, was allegedly transferred to Metuh through account no. 0040437573, which Destra Investments Limited operated with Diamond Bank Plc.

EFCC insisted that whereas the fund was earmarked for campaign activities of the PDP, it said Metuh diverted most of it to his personal use. It alleged that Metuh converted part of the money to $1 million which he used for his personal business.

Besides, Metuh was alleged to have transferred N21.7 million to another chieftain of the PDP, Chief Tony Anenih.

18 witnesses to testify against Metuh

Already, the anti-graft agency has lined up 18 witnesses that will testify against Metuh and his firm before the high court.

Among those to testify in the case are representatives of the Office of the NSA, representatives of Diamond Bank, Access Bank, Sterling Bank, FirstBank, Heritage Bank, Nneka Nicole Ararume, Alhaji Abba Dabo, Mallam Kabiru Ibrahim, Olayinka Badejo Okusanya of CMC Comet, Ahmadu Umar of Kwalaye Investment Limited, Theophilus Musa of Capital Fields Investment and six EFCC investigators.

Though the charge against Metuh has not been assigned to any judge for his arraignment, however, Justice Okon Abang, yesterday, adjourned till January 20 to hear the suit challenging the continued detention of the PDP spokesman in EFCC custody.

Justice Abang adjourned hearing on Metuh’s fundamental right enforcement suit on a day the EFCC insisted that his detention was sequel to a valid court order.

Detention sequel to valid court order—EFCC

Counsel to the EFCC, Mr. Jacobs, SAN, maintained that the commission obtained a remand order against Metuh in line with provisions of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015.

Jacobs said the ACJA, 2015, permitted the EFCC to detain an accused person pending completion of investigation into criminal allegations against such person, so far there is a valid approval from a competent court.

He said: “It is arrant nonsense for anybody or group to say that the suspect is being detained illegally for political reasons. EFCC is established by law and as such, cannot take the laws into its hand. The truth is that there is a valid and subsisting court order that permitted the detention of the man.

“The order was issued by the court based on the avalanche of documentary evidence that was placed before it.”

The EFCC lawyer told the court, yesterday, that the commission would need time to study Metuh’s fundamental right enforcement suit which he said was only served on the anti-graft agency Wednesday morning.

Arguing that EFCC still have five days to respond to Me tuh’s suit, Jacobs, yesterday, persuaded Justice Abang to adjourn the matter which he said was not ripe for hearing.

Even though Metuh, through his lawyer, Chief Ifedayo Adedipe, SAN, urged the court to abridge the time within which the EFCC could respond to the suit, Justice Abang, yesterday, declined the prayer.

Adedipe accused the EFCC of not only detaining his client illegally, but also failed to arraign him within the time stipulated by the law.

He contended that the anti-graft agency ought to have concluded its investigations before arresting an accused person.

Meanwhile, some of the charges that were filed gainst Metuh yesterday read: \’That you, Olisa Metuh and Destra Investment Limited, on or about the 24th November, 2014, in Abuja, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, took possession of the sum of N400, 000,000.00 (Four Hundred Million Naira) only, paid into the account of Destra Investments Limited with Diamond Bank Plc. Account No. 0040437573 from the account of the Office of the National Security Adviser with the Central Bank of Nigeria without contract award, when you reasonably ought to have known that the said fund formed part of the proceeds of an unlawful activity of Col.
