DEPUTY President of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu has warned that continued detention of the National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Chief Olisa Metuh was designed by the Federal Government to gag the mouthpiece of the opposition. Ekweremadu who stressed the need for the All Progressives Congress, APC led government to be cautious against the trampling of the opposition and total disregard for the rule of law in the guise of anti-corruption war, said that with this development, the country was fast descending into authoritarianism, adding that it spells doom on the nation’s democracy. In a statement signed yesterday by his Special Adviser, Media, Uche Anichukwu, Senator Ekweremadu who reaffirmed the PDP’s support for a genuine anti-graft crusade, however, decried a situation where such crusade becomes a calculated attempt to decimate and silence the opposition, while members of the ruling party with serious corruption allegations go about their businesses. The Deputy President of the Senate who was speaking in the light of the continued detention of Metuh, Senator Ekweremadu said,” the continued detention of the PDP mouthpiece was an attempt to gag the opposition and therefore unhealthy for democracy.” Warning against the corruption of the anti-corruption war, he argued: “An anti-graft trap that catches only members of the opposition and those with axe to grind with the government of the day is compromised.” He called on the nation to denounce and resist the prevailing situation where people are held in custody against the directives of the courts and laws of the land, insisting that there would be no justice without the rule of law. A Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday granted bail to each of a former Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party,Haliru Bello, and his son, Abba Bello, in the sum of N300m with two sureties in like sum. Justice Ahmed Mohammed in a ruling on the accused persons’ bail applications also ordered that they should deposit their passport with the court pending the determination of their trial. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Tuesday arraigned Bello and his son, accusing them of collecting about N300m meant for procurement of arms for political campaigns but was received from the Office of the National Security Adviser under the guise of using it for “safe houses”. Also charged along with them is their firm, Bam Project Properties. The judge in his ruling on Thursday, ordered Bello to remain under the supervision of the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Solomon Arase, at the Abuja Clinic, where he is said to be treated for injury resulting from spinal surgery. But the court directed that Abba be remanded in Kuje prison pending when both of them would meet their bail conditions. The judge also ruled that one of the sureties that Bello should produce must be a director in the service of the Federal Government or any of its agencies. He ruled that the other surety must own property in Abuja worth the N300m bail sum. With respect to the son’s bail, Justice Ahmed ruled that one of his sureties must be a federal civil servant not less that Grade Level 12 and the other must also own property worth N300m in the Federal Capital Territory. The judge ruled that the title documents of the property to be presented by the sureties would be verified by court officials and surrendered to the court throughout the period the trial would last. The court fixed February 16 for commencement of trial. Cc: lalasticlala http://www.punchng.com/court-grants-ex-pdp-chairman-bello-son-n600m-bail%e2%80%8e/

“You don’t need anyone to tell you that Hon. Faleke has been distracted from representing us at the House of Representatives, all that concerns him now is how to become the governor of Kogi State and not to represent us.” |

A GROUP, Ikeja Stakeholders’ Forum ,ISF, has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission,INEC, to declare the House of Representatives seat of the running mate to the late Prince Abubakar Audu in Kogi State, Mr. Abiodun Faleke vacant. A statement by its coordinator, Mr. Olanrewaju Osundairo warned that should the commission fail to do so, the group would resort to legal action. The statement partly reads: ‘’By virtue of the fact that Faleke had transferred his franchise away from Lagos to Kogi State, he ceases to be a member of the constituency. He lacks the moral and legal rights to speak for us in Ikeja at the lower legislative chambers.” It further stated that the decision of the lawmaker to contest the governorship has impacted negatively on the representation of the area in the lower chambers, saying the trend must be reversed in the interest of the people of the area. “You don’t need anyone to tell you that Hon. Faleke has been distracted from representing us at the House of Representatives, all that concerns him now is how to become the governor of Kogi State and not to represent us.” INEC fails to act, we will compel them to do the needful using the judiciary.” Cc: lalasticlala http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/01/declare-falekes-house-of-reps-seat-vacant/ |

An unremorseful father identified as Okechukwu Ibekwe on Wednesday narrated how he in connivance with his wife, Oluchi used their five- month old son, Chidera as collateral for a N400 thousand loan. The suspect, who is currently in police net for allegedly selling his son for N500 thousand to one Chinelo based in Ihiala, Anambra State, said he needed money to restart life after he was evicted from his shop at Ladipo, Lagos, and also lost his commercial bus to inferno. According to the 30-year-old suspect, his wife suggested that they use the baby to secure a loan, on grounds that he would collect N250, 000 while N150, 000 would be hers. Ibekwe said: “I was a mechanic until the building that houses my shop was sold and I was evicted. I was idle for sometime, then someone gave a bus which I used for transport but the bus was consumed by fire. “Things were very hard and I could not fend for my family. It was at the point of difficulty that my wife suggested that we should go and borrow money from one Chinelo. She’s the one who knows Chinelo and she brought her contact. “She suggested that we should give the baby to Chinelo and collect money from her. We agreed that I will collect N25,000 so that I can travel, while N150, 000 will be paid to her account. “That was how I took our son and travelled and I collected my own money. But because her share was not paid early, we started quarreling. I was surprised that while I was still in the village, a lawyer called me and I came to Lagos and was arrested. “I do not know what Chinelo does, I don’t know if she sells children. I did not sell my son to her. We used him to borrow money and it was my wife’s idea. I do not know where my wife is, Chinelo’s husband has been arrested and he told me that my wife’s N150,000 was paid,” said Ibekwe. But the suspect’s claims contradicted the position of the operatives of the Lagos State Police Command, who tracked him down to Anambra State and arrested him after his wife filed a complaint at the Iba Police Post, Iba Town, against him. According to the police, the incident occurred on December 8, at 23, Shinaba Street, Agboroko, Iba Town, but the woman reported the matter three days after. The state’s Police Commissioner, Fatai Owoseni, who paraded the suspect, said Ibekwe’s wife reported that he sent her on errand and by the time she got back, he had fled with their son. With Chief Tony Anenih's confession this morning, i think PDP shoult just keep shut. they should hide their face in shame instead. OnankpaBa: |
The Federal Government on Wednesday faulted claims by the Peoples Democratic Party that the current ordeal of its spokesman, Chief Olisa Metuh, at the hands of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission was an attempt to silence the opposition. The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, stated this in an interview with State House correspondents inside the Presidential Villa, Abuja. Mohammed was asked to react to protests currently trailing the arrest of Metuh and the prosecution of another leader of the PDP, Haliru Bello, as well as his son. The minister said the Federal Government was not dictating to the nation’s anti-graft agencies on who to arrest or prosecute. He urged journalists to also conduct their independent investigations on the allegations leveled against the suspects and verify if they were genuine or not. Mohammed, “I think the first point to make is that this government is not micro-managing any of the anti-graft agencies. I know for a fact that they don’t contact the President or anybody before they do their job. “I think the media also has to do more than they are doing right now, they should investigate these allegations and also make their independent judgment about it. “Honestly, if the EFCC or ICPC says that they are able to trace certain amount of money to my account, I don’t want you to believe it, I want you to also ask for proof; do your investigation. “I can assure you that this government, no functionary in government micromanages or directs the EFCC or ICPC on who to arrest and who not to arrest.” Cc: lalasticlala http://www.punchng.com/metuhs-arrest-buhari-not-dictating-efcc-says-fg/ |
