If Aviation is really merged with Transport. I think Amaechi has a good ministry as well. Why all the insults? |
The National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE) on Wednesday faulted the scrapping of the Ministry of Aviation by the Federal Government. The Assistant General-Secretary of NUATE, Mr. Olayinka Abioye, made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos. The Federal Government had on Tuesday merged the ministry with the ministry of transport as part of the restructuring of the public service. Abioye argued that the merger did not make economic sense and might cost the nation a lot of money in future. “Our position has always been that it doesn’t make economic sense for these ministries to be merged. “Our argument is that it makes no difference because the structure of the ministry of aviation will still remain. “The only difference that we see is that there will be one minister and may be a minister of state.’’ He recalled that on two occasions, the ministries were merged under former President Olusegun Obasanjo but were reversed to the status quo in order not to destroy the sector. The unionist said it would have been better to restructure various agencies in the ministry to cut cost and improve efficiency. “We will make our position known to government but we are not going to attack government. “We believe that we will work together to ensure that the sustainability and turnaround that everybody is wishing for the industry comes to pass,’’ Abioye added Cc: lalasticlala http://thenationonlineng.net/union-faults-aviation-ministry-merger/

The Abia Police Command, on Tuesday confirmed the arrest of a woman, who allegedly sold her three-year-old grandson to a ritualist. The Command’s spokesman, DSP Udeviotu Onyeke told newsmen that the woman was in the custody of the police in Umuobiakwa, as investigation continues. He said that part of the investigation being carried out was to determine the sanity of the woman. The woman, who hailed from Onitsha Ngwa in Obingwa Local Government of the state, had left the village with the child and returned a week later to report that he was missing. Sources in the village said that when the suspect was questioned about the missing boy, her response triggered suspiscion, thereby prompting the villagers to invite the police. The suspect, allegedly told the police that she sold the boy for N100, 000 to a native doctor in Akwa Ibom and wanted to use the money to buy a motorcycle before end of the year. The police spokesman, however, said that the woman had since changed her statement, claiming that the boy was with her sister in Aba. Onyeke assured that the police would thoroughly investigate the matter to unravel the whereabout of the three-year-old boy. Abuja – Four diplomatic corps officers from the Ethiopian Embassy were on Monday involved in an accident on Independence Avenue in the Central Business District in Abuja, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports. The accident which occurred at about 2p.m. left the occupants of the diplomatic hilux vehicle with registration number 43 CD 01 corps diplomatique, badly injured. An eye witness, who pleaded anonymity, told NAN that the vehicle hit a billboard and somersaulted when the driver could not control the vehicle. “I saw the vehicle and heard the noise when the driver was trying to apply the brake but he failed to control the vehicle. “I think the driver slept off or lost control and collided with a billboard, pulling it down and making the vehicle to somersault. “We pulled them out from the vehicle and they were badly injured. “The police had rushed them to the hospital,’’ the eye witness said. A Traffic Officer, Mr Joseph Plangshak, blamed the accident on speeding and brake failure. According to him, the victims have been taken to the National Hospital for treatment. “My colleagues have taken the victims to the National Hospital, Abuja for treatment. “We were called to come and access the situation and evacuate the vehicle to ensure flow of traffic along the busy road,’’ he said. NAN reports that it took the prompt intervention of officers of the Nigeria Police and Federal Road Safety Commission to evacuate the vehicle. The Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, has denied the Facebook posting on the judgment of the Taraba State Governorship Election Tribunal which annulled the election of Governor Darius Ishaku of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and declared the All Progressives Congress’ (APC) Aisha Alhassan as winner of April 11, 2015 poll on Staturday. The fake Facebook post reads “Rape of Justice Election Tribunal could sit in Boko Haram main zone in Borno and Yobe whereas rivers and Taraba was moved to Abuja due to security reasons is Yobe and Borno more secured than Rivers and Taraba? Our democrasy is crying under APC and Buhari” Wike in his statement on Monday, signed by Simeon Nwakaudu, Special Assistant (Media ), enjoined Nigerians to disregard the fake Facebook posting criticising the judgment of the Taraba State Governorship Election Tribunal judgment as he Wike does not run any such Facebook page where the uncomplimentary remarks were made. He urged all the social media platforms and blogs that have published the post from the fake Facebook Page, ‘Nyesom Wike’ to pull down same as they do not represent the views of Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike. He went futher to say that last week, Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike at a well publicised stakeholders meeting at the Government House, Port Harcourt declared that he has never authorised any aide to make uncomplimentary remarks on the judiciary. The governor as a lawyer respects the judiciary and will never disparage it. This is yet another scheme by the opposition to use unverified social media platforms to mislead members of the public. Governor Wike will never be distracted by these unfortunate illegal political schemes . An evangelist alleged to have raped a 13-year-old girl in Mararaba, Karu Local Government area of Nasarawa state has been arrested by the State Police Command. The Commissioner of Police, Mr Sani Mohammed, on Monday told newsmen in Lafia that the suspect was invited to stay with the girl’s family in Mararaba, based on trust, but abused the privilege by forcefully having carnal knowledge of the minor. Mohammed said, “It is unfortunate that the Pastor took advantage of his closeness to a family among his congregation to rape their 13-year-old daughter.” According to the Commissioner, the suspect (whose name was not mentioned) had confessed to committing the crime. He said the evangelist had earlier told investigators that he was trying to cast demons out of the girl. “This man was believed to be a man of God by the family but used the advantage of his said position and proximity to the family to rape the 13-year-old girl,” Mohammed lamented, noting that investigation had been concluded on the matter and the suspect would soon be charged to court. The Lagos State Police Command on Monday urged residents of the state not to report traffic robbery and other crimes first on social media but to the nearest police station. The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Joseph Offor, who made the appeal on Monday, said the reports would help the police in strategising on how to combat crimes and forestall occurrence. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Commissioner of Police, Mr Fatai Owoseni, had lamented that Nigerians were fund of reporting crimes first on the social media. He noted that reporting first to the nearest police station would help the police to prevent further occurrence. He also spoke about how some distress calls were actually blown out of proportion and advised the residents to always verify their information before causing panic. The PPRO added that making false reports of crime incidents on social media was a cheap blackmail against the leadership of the Nigeria Police. “People should endeavour to report every road traffic robbery to the police station so that we will know who to hold responsible. “This will help us to strategise and come against those people behind the crimes. “We are not denying the fact that we have a couple of traffic robberies here and there but we have arrested some of the suspects. “We have also prevented some of them that were about to be committed. “When somebody is a victim of a crime, he knows where to go,’’ Offor told NAN. “If you go to a police station to report, it will help us to have the statistics of crime being committed in that area; it will also help us in our planning. “It will help us in our research but when people decide to report their cases to the social media, we see it as a cheap blackmail against the leadership of the Nigeria Police. “And this is worrisome because it is not helping our statistics.’’ According to Offor, people making crime reports on the social media are not helping the system as planning and strategising cannot be based solely on statistics got from such reports. The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has told President Muhammadu Buhari that the victory of the Golden Eaglets at the FIFA U-17 World Cup clearly indicates that the nation’s youths are endowed with talents and should be encouraged to excel. Describing the feat as a bold response by the Nigerian youth to the series of “uninspiring and negative utterances and actions of President Muhammadu Buhari-led APC government,” the party accused the current administration of refusing to acknowledge the potentials of the nation’s youths. The main opposition party, in a statement issued on Monday by its National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh held that, “The victory is a clear demonstration that Nigeria, as a country is endowed with enormous talents and potentials waiting to be exhibited to the entire world. “The victory further expressed the resilient spirit of Nigerians despite a discouraging government that has not only shown an obvious inability to chart a clear course of governance and the future of the youth, but also refused to acknowledge the potentials in its citizens. “The time has come for us to dwell less on our negatives but to showcase the positives, the talents and indeed the natural resources waiting to be harnessed and exhibited for foreign investments and participation in our economy. “Finally, the PDP states that this victory should be a wake up call on President Muhammadu Buhari to recognise the hardworking spirit of Nigerians, our overflowing talents and well-developed natural endowments,” the statement concluded.
