By Peter Duru MAKURDI— Former Governor Gabriel Suswam of Benue State, yesterday, denied stealing the state’s money during his eight years tenure in office. Suswam spoke at a special thanksgiving service organised for him at the Holy Ghost Catholic Church, Makurdi, by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, lawmakers at Benue State House of Assembly,, He regretted that before the last general elections, the All Progressives Congress, APC, had sold to the people that salaries were not being paid because the state’s funds were being stolen. Suswam said: “Today that same salary issue is persisting, that is to tell you that we are in a deep economic crisis. ‘’I am not a thief, I’m not a criminal, I did not steal government money neither did I syphon the state’s resources. “In our time, we assumed office under tough circumstances, but we were able to achieve a milestone. The fact is that no one can do the job of governnce at once. “You do your best and leave the rest. I did my best. And I refused to demonize anyone when I assumed office, though I was pushed to do so by forces and individuals but I refused. “That seat of governor of Benue State is the hottest in the country. If you spend one day in office as a governor, and if somebody takes over, and he wants to take you to jail, he will do so. “The fact is that nobody is a saint, we have serious economic situation. I raised the alarm, they said I was stealing money, my successor is raising same alarm today. “Unfortunately, the Tiv man always wants to bring down his own brother, the truth is that as governor, there is no way you cannot step on toes.” Cc: lalasticlala http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/11/im-not-a-thief-im-not-a-criminal-suswam/

There is still uncertainty about who is going to head which ministry as President Muhammadu Buhari officially inaugurates a new Federal Executive Council (FEC) on Wednesday. A statement yesterday by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina, confirmed that the new ministers would be sworn in on Wednesday but was silent on portfolios or the number of ministries the president will have. Adesina said before the commencement of the inaugural session of the Federal Executive Council, the ministers-designate would take their oaths of office at the Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa in Abuja. Sources however told Daily Trust that sharing of portfolios to the new ministers would be done immediately after the oath of office was administered on them Wednesday. The president’s media aide said the swearing-in ceremony would begin promptly at 10:00am and the ministers-designate expected to be seated at the Council Chambers by 09:30am at the latest. The presidential spokesman said each minister-designate could only be accompanied to the swearing-in ceremony by a maximum of two guests. This was not the case during former President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration when ministers-designate were accompanied to swearing-in ceremonies with spouses, children and relations as well as friends, political associates, state governors and traditional rulers. President Buhari is inaugurating the new Federal Executive Council more than five months after he assumed office. The ministers-designate had on Friday completed a two-day presidential retreat aimed at getting them fully acquainted with the direction and priorities of Buhari’s government. The theme of the retreat, which was organised by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), was “Delivering Change: From Precepts to Practice”. The ministers-designate include Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers), Chris Ngige (Anambra), Kayode Fayemi (Ekiti), Babatunde Fashola (Lagos), Abdulrahman Dambazau (Kano), Aisha Alhassan (Taraba), Ogbonnaya Onu (Ebonyi), Kemi Adeosun (Ogun), Abubakar Malami (Kebbi), Hadi Sirika (Katsina), Suleiman Adamu (Jigawa), Solomon Dalong (Plateau), Ibe Kachikwu (Delta), Osagie Ehanire (Edo), Audu Ogbeh (Benue), Udo Udo Udoma (Akwa Ibom), Lai Mohammed (Kwara), Amina Mohammed (Gombe), Ibrahim Usman Jibril (Nasarawa), Anthony Onwuka (Imo) and Muhammadu Bello (Adamawa). Others are Adamu Adamu (Bauchi), Okechukwu Enelamah (Abia), Aisha Abubakar (Sokoto), Khadija Bukar Abba (Yobe), Claudius Daramola (Ondo), Geoffrey Onyeama (Enugu), M. Dan-Ali (Zamfara), James Ocholi (Kogi), Zainab Ahmed (Kaduna), Mustapha Shehuri (Borno), Heineken Lokpobiri (Bayelsa), Isaac Adewole Folorunsho (Osun), Usani Usani Uguru (Cross River), Abubakar Bwari Bawa (Niger) and Adebayo Shittu (Oyo). Adesina was not readily available for comment last night but in an earlier statement he issued, the spokesman said the president would swear in ministers and assign portfolios to them accordingly. A commentator on public affairs Muhammad Sani said it would be difficult to hazard a guess as to which portfolio will be given to which minister. “Take the issue of attorney general for instance, there are so many lawyers in the soon to be inaugurated cabinet and, as far as I am concerned, they seem capable. But the president has the final say,” he said. Daily Trust reports that Malami, Ocholi, Fashola, Shittu, Dalong, Alhassan, Lai Mohammed, Onyeama, Udoma and Kachikwu are all lawyers. Kachikwu is however expected to go to the petroleum ministry. Others associated with certain ministries include Chief Audu Ogbeh (agriculture), Adeosun (Finance), Amaechi (Niger Delta Affairs), among others. ...Swears in INEC chair, 5 commissioners today Adesina also disclosed yesterday that President Buhari would today preside over the swearing-in of Professor Mahmood Yakubu as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and five others as National Commissioners of the INEC. The presidential aide said this followed the confirmation of their nominations by the Senate. He said the swearing-in of Prof. Yakubu, Mrs. Amina Zakari, Mr. Solomon Adedeji Soyebi, Prof. Antonia Taiye Okoosi-Simbine, Dr. Muhammed Mustafa Lecky and Alhaji Baba Shettima Arfo was scheduled for 11:00am at the Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa. http://www.dailytrust.com.ng/news/general/anxiety-as-buhari-swears-in-cabinet-wednesday/118526.html

The All Progressives Congress has assured Nigerians that it will not back out on its plan to pay 5,000 Naira each month to jobless youths. The party, therefore, called on the Nigerians to ignore the mischievous attempt by the PDP to confuse and mislead them on the issue. APC in a statement issued in Abuja on Friday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said even though the PDP-led Federal Government milked the nation’s treasury dry, while in power, it would not stop them from fulfilling their campaign promises. According to him, ”Now, the Buhari administration has been busy putting into place measures that will make it possible to start the implementation of this project. Such measures include the introduction of the Treasury Single Account (TSA). “We are happy to inform Nigerians that as of the end of September 2015, over 1.4 trillion Naira – which hitherto was lying unproductively in various commercial banks – has been recovered and paid into the TSA,” APC said. Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha has reacted to comment by the leader of the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra, Chief Ralph Uwazuruike, that he was sabotaging the Igbo cause. His Chief Press Secretary, Sam Onwuemedo, in a statement yesterday said, “Although Chief Uwazuruike had made his claim and his allegation, the indisputable fact remains that the real Igbo saboteur is Chief Uwazuruike himself and not Governor Okorocha, because all over the world, the real enemies of the people are those who fail or refuse to tell them the truth”. “Obviously, what must have prompted Chief Uwazuruike’s media attack on Governor Okorocha this time was the governor’s condemnation of the violent protest in the name of Biafra some weeks ago, and his remark that Igbo people would not use MASSOB as a platform to ask for what is due to them in an entity called Nigeria. But the truth must be told. “Chief Uwazuruike had used his MASSOB to adopt and support the Peoples Democratic Party and former President Goodluck Jonathan when they held sway. He should mention one project the PDP-led Federal Government or former President Jonathan did in any part of Igbo land. “The MASSOB leader was part of the hate campaign against the APC and President Muhammadu Buhari, while Governor Okorocha was telling his Igbo kinsmen to read accurately the body language of the rest of Nigerians. Today, it is left for Ndigbo to tell themselves the truth about who was the real saboteur, Uwazuruike or Okorocha? “It is also left for Chief Uwazuruike to tell his audience why MASSOB went to bed throughout the period Jonathan was the President, only for MASSOB to wake up from their deep slumber now that Buhari is the President”, he said. According to him, the Igbo cannot be asking for sovereignty in a country that they were one of the major stakeholders, adding that “if MASSOB had failed to achieve sovereignty under former President Goodluck Jonathan that they supported, would they achieve it under President Buhari they never supported? Who would allow them to achieve that? he asked. “Truly speaking, the issue of MASSOB is a distraction. And Igbo leaders and the governors in the South-East geo-political zone won’t be part of that unnecessary distraction. The leaders and governors in the zone have resolved to work with Buhari to attract development to the area. And the projects have begun to come with the elevation of the Imo Airport to Cargo International Airport. Work is already in progress in the place. “Governor Okorocha is an Igbo man and would continue to support and promote genuine cause of the Igbo within the corporate Nigeria and in the overall interest of the Ndigbo both at home and in the Diaspora.” Cc: lalasticlala http://dailypost.ng/2015/11/06/youre-the-real-saboteur-go-to-hell-with-your-massob-okorocha-blasts-uwazuruike/

An aviation source said the development prompted the pilot to brief the passengers on board before initiating the safety procedure of returning to the aerodrome of take – off otherwise known in aviation par lance as air return. The Managing Director of Medview , Alhaji Muneer Bankole, confirmed the incident to our correspondent on Thursday. He said the crew members took the professional decision to return the plane to Lagos rather than continuing with the flight. He added that the airline provided another aircraft for the passenger to return to Abuja after they disembarked from the airplane that made air return. A lawyer who accused former Governor Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom of corruption, has been arraigned in court for defamation. Leo Ekpenyong was arraigned by the police at the High Court in Gudu District, Abuja. Mr. Ekpenyong appeared in court on Thursday. He was charged for the unsubstantiated allegations he made against top officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, while appearing on the African Independent Television, AIT. However, attempts to speak to the lawyer failed as calls to his mobile telephone were unanswered. Mr. Ekpenyong had accused the EFCC of intimidating him, and refusing to investigate Mr. Akpabio. He had earlier threatened legal action against the EFCC, if it failed to investigate allegations of corruption against Mr. Akpabio. Mr. Ekpenyong, who had sent several petitions to the commission, vowed to use every legal instrument available to ensure that Mr. Akpabio was probed. In a four-page petition dated June 8, which was copied to President Muhammadu Buhari and sent to PREMIUM TIMES, Mr. Ekpenyong had called for an immediate investigation and prosecution of Mr. Akpabio. When the former governor was not charged to court, Mr. Ekpenyong took on the EFCC during a live interview with the AIT. He questioned the integrity of the commission’s leadership and expressed his loss of confidence in its ability to bring Mr. Akpabio to justice. The commission later invited Mr. Ekpenyong on Monday, October 26, and interrogated him over the allegations he made during the television programme. He was released after being grilled for hours.
