As the Senate wound up screening of Ministerial nominees which began four weeks ago, expectations were high as to the confirmation of the remaining 18 including the former governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi whose nomination generated so much controversies and drew the ire of PDP Senators. However, after today’s plenary, PDP Senators met behind close doors in their numbers to fine-tune what DAILY POST later gathered as their preparation for the confirmation which may come up tomorrow or any other legislative day. Sources from the meeting have revealed that Rotimi Amaechi may be ambushed during the confirmation which would be put up through voice votes during plenary. An attempt to speak with Chairman, Senate Ad-hoc Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions, Samuel Anyanwu ton the report on Amaechi which was laid within the week, but not deliberated upon before his screening was turned down while he asked for another day for him to oblige the request. Meanwhile, a ranking senator from Zamfara who pleaded anonymity expressed dismay at what he described as “personal vendetta”, against Amaechi by some PDP Senators despite the fact that there was limitation to what they could do in Amaechi’s matter. “Don’t quote my name. Some of the PDP Senators want to ambush Amaechi during confirmation and this issue has gone beyond politics to personal vendetta now; it is not all of them. Bearing this in mind and any other unforseen circumstances, he stressed that all APC Senators should attend legislative proceedings in their numbers to support the cause of their party. “I want to call on all APC members that this is not the time to stay away. We should be at plenary purposely for this confirmation because of any eventuality so that what happened in the past should not happen again,” he opined. It will be recalled that PDP Senators had stayed away from posing questions to Rotimi Amaechi in protest that due process was not exhausted regarding the petition that was written against him. Senator Godswill Akpabio who is the minority leader told the Senate at plenary when Amaechi was to be screened on Tuesday last week, that the party was not ready to ask Amaechi questions. Senator Gershom Bassey representing Calabar South Senatorial District while speaking with DAILY POST also faulted the manner Rotimi’s report was handled. He suggested that there was nothing to hurry about in terms of Amaechi’s screening, but that the Senate should have waited until the outcome of the petition against him was determined. cc lalasticlala http://dailypost.ng/2015/10/29/amaechi-pdp-senators-meet-behind-closed-doors-ahead-of-confirmation/

The Federal Government has debunked media reports, claiming that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has been directed to investigate its chairman, Ibrahim Lamorde. The media was awash with reports on Tuesday that the Federal Ministry of Justice had directed the EFCC to commence investigation into the allegation that Lamorde diverted about N1 trillion proceeds of corruption recovered by the anti-graft agency. The reports said the request was in response to a petition sent by one George Uboh to the Solicitor-General and Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Justice, Abdullahi Yola, who allegedly gave the probe order. But the Ministry of Justice, in a statement by its spokesperson, Charles Nwodo, acknowledged receiving a petition against Lamorde and other top officials of the EFCC but insisted that the media report was “erroneous and misleading.” It clarified that what the Ministry did after receiving the petition “as required by the rules of public service and constitutional right to fair hearing” was to pass the petition to Lamorde for response. The ministry however disclosed that it was still awaiting the response of the EFCC chairman. Mr. Uboh is said to have written to the justice ministry threatening legal action should it fail to “sanction” the leadership of the EFCC. The ministry responded to Mr. Uboh’s letter through its Director, Public Prosecutions, Muhammad Diri, on behalf of the Permanent Secretary, who said he was directed to inform Mr. Uboh that his petition “has been sent to the EFCC for their response to the allegation contained therein. cc: lalasticlala http://dailypost.ng/2015/10/28/fg-denies-ordering-efcc-to-investigate-lamorde/

The House of Representatives has commenced fresh investigation into the alleged non-remittance of over N1 trillion generated from seized assets by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to the Federation Account. The House consequently mandated its committee on financial crimes to investigate the matter. The resolution was reached after adopting a motion by Minority Leader Leo Ogor (PDP, Delta), asking that the alleged non-remittance be investigated to ascertain its authenticity. Ogor in his motion said: “The past and present leadership of the EFCC is being accused of diversion of funds worth billions of naira meant to be paid into the Consolidated Revenue Fund of the Federation as stipulated by Section 31 subsection 2 and 3 of the EFCC Act of 2004. “The Solicitor-General and Permanent Secretary Federal Ministry of Justice has directed the EFCC to investigate the allegation against Ibrahim Lamorde and to forward the result of its investigation to him,” he said. Ogor added that, “by the powers conferred on the House by Section 88(I) of the 1999 Constitution as amended, the House, just like the police and the ICPC can investigate the diversion of funds by Lamorde, past and present leaders of the EFCC.” There were reports in the media that the Federal Ministry of Justice had directed the EFCC to investigate the allegation of diversion of recovered funds by its chairman, Ibrahim Lamorde. This followed a petition dated September 18, 2015 to the Solicitor-General and Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Justice, Mr. Abdullahi Yola. EFCC debunks claims However, the EFCC has debunked claims that it was under investigation, saying that it would be illogical to ask EFCC to investigate itself. Head of media and publication of EFCC, Wilson Uwujaren, said this yesterday during a telephone chat with Daily Trust. According to him, no letter had been sent to the EFCC by the Justice ministry. “How will the Federal Government ask EFCC to investigate itself? It is illogical.” Daily Trust reports that the Senate had earlier opened a similar probe of the anti-graft commission, but some senators dismissed it as illegal and accused Senate President Bukola Saraki of taking up the commission for investigating his wife, Toyin. A petition was written against Lamorde by Dr. George Uboh, the Chief Executive Officer, Panic Alert Security Systems (PASS). Chairman, Senate Adhoc Committee on publicity, Dino Melaye, told journalists last month that the probe of the Chairman of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr. Ibrahim Larmode, over the alleged diversion of the monies recovered from a former Governor of Bayelsa State, Diepreye Alamieyeseigha and former Inspector-General of Police, Tafa Balogun, was continuing. The former governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi has accused Governor Nyesom Wike led administration of misusing over forty billion naira borrowed funds. Amaechi told a crowd of APC Supporters in Port Harcourt that investigations have shown that all funds borrowed by the Governor Nyesom Wike-led government have been for personal use and not for the development of the state. The former governor claimed that his administration directed all the money they borrowed to contractors handling projects during his tenure. According to Amaechi, “I borrowed up to N300bn and I paid N245bn back. If you want to borrow, I am not saying don’t borrow but borrow to pay bills. And you have somebody that has borrowed N45b already. “If you have N45b Port Harcourt will be very busy. If you pump N45b in these economy, contractors will be working. They will employ more workers, schools wil be open, and people will pay fees. “Like I said, this is not the time for criticism.” The occasion was attended by leadership of the All Progressives Congress in Rivers State including its governorship candidate, Dakuku Peterside. http://dailypost.ng/2015/10/26/amaechi-accuses-wike-of-squandering-over-n40bn-in-few-months/
