President Muhammadu Buhari has withdrawn the nomination of Ahmed Ibeto from Niger State, bringing the total number of nominees to 36 from 37 earlier submitted. This was just announced by the Senate President, Bukola Saraki at todays plenary. Meanwhile, the Senate has promised to improve on whatever gains it recorded yesterday, adding that it would use the feelings of the general public as the yardstick with which to adjudge self. Chairman of the Senate Ad hoc Committee on Publicity, Senator Dino Melaye, who disclosed this on Wednesday, explained that what happened yesterday was the confirmation screening. He added that “We are not going to confirm in batches. We are going to confirm holistically.” Melaye went on to state that “the eighth Senate is about the people. Its entire agenda is about the people.” http://dailypost.ng/2015/10/14/senate-will-improve-on-tuesdays-screening-dino-melaye/

A middle age house wife, Mujidat Saliman while pushing for dissolution of her 13-year-old marriage to her husband, Kabir Saliman has told a Grade C Customary Court sitting in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital that her husband beat her and her parents anytime they quarrel. Mujidat also told the court that Kabir was irresponsible and does not cater for the family. She said, “My husband has not paid my bride price after 13 years of marriage; I now have five kids for him. He did not allow me to work and only gives me N300 to prepare food for the family. “When he eventually allowed me to open a shop where I sell engine oil, he accused me of going out with different men who are my customers, knowing the nature of the business I do. “My husband is so troublesome, he beats me mercilessly several times in a week Most times, I end up being taken to the hospital. He disrespects my family to the extent of beating my mother and recently did the same to my father. “He has refused to enroll the kids in school and threatened to kill my mother in order to get me back forcefully. This is the third time I am taking him to court. All police interventions have proven abortive, I want a divorce.” In his defence, the defendant, Kabir told the court that his wife was wayward, promiscuous and a flirt. “My daughter once told me my wife sent her to an okada man to collect money. I did not react to this until I caught her with a man in front of her shop and I heard an unspeakable conversation between them. Kabir further stated that when he reported the matter to his mother in-law, she supported her daughter saying it was the nature of her job that warranted her keeping male company. “Her mother, I am sure, has kept another husband for her as she took her in the very day she left our home and abandoned the kids. “I had been asked several times if I wanted a divorce, but I said no because of the kids. This is the third time she had sued me to court. My wife is promiscuous, I want to divorce her so that I can take care of my children.” After hearing both argument, the President of the court, Chief Amusa Makinde consequently adjourned the case till October 21. http://dailypost.ng/2015/10/13/my-husband-is-irresponsible-beats-me-and-my-parents-woman-tells-court/

Spokesman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, Monday filled a N500m libel suit against Chief Olisa Metuh of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. The ministerial nominee in his brief instituted before the Lagos State High court, Ikeja, claimed that the PDP spokesperson had defamed him in a press release, authored and circulated on September 20, 2015. The controversial release, according to him, alleged that he (Mohammed) siphoned the funds meant for fencing of an airport in one of the APC-controlled states in the South-West part of the country. Mohammed also claimed that Metuh in the statement alleged that he (Mohammed) embezzled money meant to supply ambulances to an APC-controlled state in the South-West. The suit, filed on Monday is yet to be assigned to any judge. However, Mohammed, who noted he previously headed the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Campaign Organisation, disclosed that the statement credited to Metuh was “carefully calculated to inflict damage on my reputation and to lessen me in the estimation of the public.” According to him, Metuh in the statement had said, “…our final word for the APC spokesman on this, is that being ethically challenged, includes embezzling funds meant for fencing an airport in an APC-led South-West state. “It also includes when one fraudulently refuses to supply ambulances after collecting monies from another APC South-West state. “It is a comedy of roles when Alhaji Lai Mohammed speaks on corruption, a topic he practices and has well learnt, being a personal aide to one of the most corrupt politicians to ever bestride the political landscape of the country.” Claiming monetary damage, Mohammed stated that Mehuh had injured his “character in a grave manner and caused him considerable reputational destruction and embarrassment.” He added that Metuh admitted authorising the statement in a letter by his lawyer, Emeka Etiaba (SAN) dated September 25, 2015 to the claimant’s lawyer, Wahab Shittu, but denied that it was Mohammed that was being referred to. Mohammed, however, quoted Etiaba to have also referred to an earlier statement where he (Mohammed) also attacked Metuh by stating that “the allegations of corruption hanging on his (Metuh) neck, from within his own party, is a clear indication that he is mortally afraid that the wind will soon blow hard enough to expose the fowl’s rump…” Mohammed, however, insisted that he made the said statement based on a petition to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission written against Metuh on July 15, 2015 by the PDP, Nkwelle-Ezunaka Ward 1, in the Oyi Local Government chapter of Anambra State. The APC spokesperson is, therefore, demanding an order mandating Metuh to not only retract his statement but to also tender published apology to him in a widely read newspaper for seven consecutive days. http://dailypost.ng/2015/10/13/lai-muhammed-sues-pdps-olisa-metuh-over-libel-demands-n500m-damages/

Natives of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja have decried the non-inclusion of their representatives as ministerial nominees, saying despite President Muhammadu Buhari’s promise that he belongs to no one but everybody, natives of the FCT have been relegated in the list forwarded to the Senate. A statement issued by the President, Original Inhabitants Development Association of Abuja (OIDA), Pastor Danladi Jeji, the inhabitants decried the continuous marginalization of FCT natives in key government positions within the Federal Government which doubles as their own state government as reflected in Section 299 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended). The natives are asking President Buhari to “appoint competent natives of Abuja as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and political aides so that the government will not have a crisis of confidence between it and Abuja original inhabitants.” The pan-FCT group are also asking President Buhari to “relinquish his powers as Governor of FCT and the National Assembly to also relinquish its powers as the House of Assembly for the FCT to the original inhabitants and residents of the Territory so that they can freely elect those to govern them directly rather than the indirect rule presently obtainable in the FCT.” OIDA also called for a “total audit of land allocations by the Abuja Geographic and Information System, AGIS to ascertain those behind massive fraud allocation of lands through programs like mass housing, Landswap and Centenary city projects.” According to OIDA, As Nigerians await the remaining list from President Buhari, the FCT natives are hopeful that they will have a representative in the federal cabinet even as they pledged their continuous support to the new federal government. http://dailypost.ng/2015/10/12/abuja-natives-decry-omission-from-ministerial-list/

The National Assembly election tribunal sitting in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital has dismissed the petitions filed by candidates of Accord in Ibadan North East/ Ibadan South East federal constituency, Hon. Gbenga Adewusi and Oluyole federal constituency, Hon. Musibau Adeagbo against the winner of the March 28, 2015, elections, Hon. Dapo Lam-Adesina and Olusumbo Olugbemi both of the All Progressives Congress (APC) respectively. Hon. Adewusi had told the tribunal to dismiss the election of Hon. Lam-Adesina but the tribunal in a judgement delivered by its chairman, Hon. Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo, said the petition lacks merit as the petitioner failed to prove his case. In another judgment, the tribunal also dismissed the petition of Hon. Musibau Adeagbo of Accord against the election of Hon. Olugbemi. Hon. Musibau had asked the tribunal to dismiss Olugbemi’s election saying that Olugbemi was not the rightful candidate of APC and holds a dual citizen. The tribunal awarded a cost of N100, 000. http://thenationonlineng.net/tribunal-uphold-lam-adesina-olugbemis-election/ Cc: lalasticlala
