Sheriff Vs Makarfi: Appeal Court to decide PDP’s authentic National Chairman today The Court of Appeal sitting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State will today decide who is legitimately the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. The ruling may likely bring to an end the leadership tussle that have ravaged the former ruling party for a while now. PDP has been enmeshed in leadership crisis following the inauguration of the Sen Ahmed Makarfi-led National Caretaker Committee in May 2016. The party had inaugurated the committee following the alleged expiration of the tenure of its embattled factional National Chairman, Sen Ali Modu Sheriff. Despite the existence of the Makarfi-led Committee, Sheriff has continued to maintain that he remained the authentic leader of the party. However, Makarfi’s claim to the party’s leadership stool was strengthened by a favourable judgment obtained at the Federal High Court, Port-Harcourt in which Justice Mohammed Liman ordered that he be duly recognised. Justice Liman also ordered Sheriff to stop parading himself as the National Chairman of the party. The PDP which took to its twitter handle @OfficialPDPNIG announced that its leaders were already at the court ahead of the ruling. PDP wrote, “Today is Judgment day at the Appeal Court, Port Harcourt Division. We shall update you our esteem supporters on proceedings and developments “The Zonal Vice Chairmen and state Chairmen of the party are all here in the court. “We just got a report that the Court will be sitting by 11:00am instead of 9:00am earlier scheduled.” http://dailypost.ng/2017/02/17/sheriff-vs-makarfi-appeal-court-decide-pdps-authentic-national-chairman-today/

The Presidency, on Thursday declared that President Muhammadu Buhari will not speak to Nigerians from London because he has right to his vacation. Featuring on TVC television Programme, ‘This Morning’, the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the President, Femi Adesina, said Buhari’s right will not be infringed upon. According to Adesina, “Mr. President will not speak to Nigerians because he has a right to his vacation, we don’t need to intrude.” The President’s media aide also noted that those doubting the veracity of the released photographs of the President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara’s visit in London are “haters, greedy.” Recall that both National Assembly leaders met with the President yesterday at his vacation spot in London. Buhari, who is currently on a medical vacation in London, was recently rumoured dead. However, several dignitaries from Nigeria have visited him at the Abuja House in London with photographs of their visits published online. Some of the photos have resulted to widespread condemnations from Nigerians, who have insisted that he speaks to the nation from his vacation to show he is alive. http://dailypost.ng/2017/02/16/buhari-will-not-speak-nigerians-london-femi-adesina/

The self-acclaimed Chairman of the mega party, National Unity Party, NUP, Perry Opara, has declared that the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, died the day former President, Olusegun Obasanjo personally supervised the tearing of his membership card of the party. Opara made the remark yesterday while disagreeing with the immediate past President, Goodluck Jonathan’s recent claim that PDP remains the biggest and strongest party in Nigeria. He noted that the incorrigible nature of Jonathan led to the loss of the former ruling party in the 2015 Presidential election. The mega party Chairman observed that any attempt by the former President to revive the party would further divide it because his intervention was coming too late. “I totally disagree with former President, Jonathan. In the first place, he caused PDP’s defeat in 2015. He should not have contested in 2015. He should have allowed Dr. Tafawa Balewa and others to compete with him in the 2015 PDP presidential primary. Jonathan is a good man but not a courageous leader. Courageous leaders strengthen institutions to make them strong. Weak leaders don’t make institutions strong. “PDP is gone and gone forever. PDP died the day Obasanjo tore his membership card. Jonathan woke up from his political slumber very late in the day. When he lost election in April 2015, leaders of PDP went to him severally to reorganise the party but he could not do that until he left office. Even after leaving office he could not do anything for PDP; he ran away. “Two years after, he has realised his mistakes to reorganise PDP when things have gone bad. No way! It is late. His entry into PDP now will create the 3rd faction in the party. He should step back and enjoy his retirement. The soul of PDP has left and will never come back,” he told leadership. Alleging that Jonathan campaigned with money and left substance behind, Opara stressed that the former President was not in charge of his Jonathan, 2015 Presidential campaign. “You don’t change a winning team. His structures in the party were dismantled before the 2015 reelection bid. Yet, he couldn’t do anything. “He was not in charge. Instead of campaigning on issues, they campaigned with money and left the substance. He resorted to campaign of calumny against Buhari. How do you convince Nigerians that such a corrupt group should come back in 2019. Never; forget it,” he added. http://dailypost.ng/2017/02/16/pdp-died-day-obasanjo-publicly-tore-membership-card-perry-opara/

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, Yaba College of Technology chapter, has accused the management of the institution of short paying staff salary by 25 percent. ASUP Chairman in the college, Mr. Adeyemi Aromolaran, on Thursday, insisted that the workers would not call off their strike until the full salary is been paid. The union had on February 10 begun an indefinite strike over non-payment of the balance of January salary by the college management. Aromolaran said this was not the right time for the management of the institution to deny workers their full salary when the economy was biting hard. According to him, for about 10 years now, workers’ salary is being paid by both Federal Government and the institution on 75 per cent and 25 per cent ratio, respectively. He said, “The Federal Government had in January paid 75 percent of the salary while the school management is expected to pay the balance of 25 per cent. “The balance, which represents various allowances, is yet to be paid by the management.” He said the allowances were supposed to be paid from the Internally Generated Revenue of the college. Aromolaran said that the payment of the salary on the ratio of 75:25 by the government and school management had been on for more than eight years. According to him, the fractional payment policy has been on since the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan. He also alleged that for more than 10 years, staff salaries and allowances have not been reviewed. He said, “This is not the right time to deny workers full payment of their salary. The economy is biting harder on the workers, particularly in Lagos State. “We will not call off the strike until the management pays us our money, all academic activities will remain suspended.” He recalled that the union had a similar experience in August 2016, but that after a protest, the Minister of Education intervened by directing that the allowance is paid. “This time around, we will remain on strike until our full salary is paid. The management is trying to play pranks with the union.’’ He said that if it warrants waiting for President Muhammadu Buhari to return from vacation, the union would not suspend the strike.
