PoliticsFG Withdraws Charges Against Supreme Court Registrar, Others Over N2.2bn Fraud by DONSMITH123(op): 11:33am On Feb 07, 2017
Ade Adesomoju, Abuja

The Federal Government on Tuesday withdrew without giving reasons, the corruption charges it filed against the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court, Mr. Ahmed Saleh, and two other employees of the apex court.

The charges were filed before a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory in Jabi, Abuja barely three months ago, following the raid on the Supreme Court complex and homes of some judges, including two of the apex court, between October 7 and 8, 2016.

The Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation had filed the charges against Saleh, Muhammed Abdulrahman Sharif and Rilwanu Lawal on November 3, 2016.

The prosecution in the case marked, FCT/HC/CR/13/2016, accused the defendants of receiving gratifications totalling N74.4m from private contractors providing services to the Supreme Court between 2009 and 2016.

The prosecution also alleged in the nine counts, that the Supreme Court officials, among others, diverted the sum of N2.2bn belonging to the court.

The accused were to be arraigned on Tuesday when a prosecuting counsel, Mrs Hajara Yusuf, announced the withdrawal of the charges.

“This matter is for arraignment tody but I have been instructed to withdraw the said charges,” Yusuf said.

She gave no reason for the withdrawal of the charges.

The defence lawyers appearing for the defendants said they had no objection.

The trial judge, Justice Abba-Bello Mohammed, subsequently struck out the case.

“The charge, FCT/HC/CR/13/2016, is hereby struck out, same having been withdrawn without objection,” the judge ruled.

PoliticsBuhari: Nigerians Are Suspicious, Open Up Now – Doctors Tell Presidency by DONSMITH123(op): 10:23am On Feb 07, 2017
As the expected return of President Muhammadu Buhari delays, Nigerian Doctors have challenged the presidency to reveal the true health status of the country’s leader.

The Doctors, who spoke in reaction to Buhari’ request for further stay in London for medical tests and results, stressed that non-disclosure of the president’s ailment was generating confusion, suspicion and distrust among Nigerians.

Speaking, National President of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Prof. Mike Ogirima, called for openness on the issue.

Admitting that nobody was above sickness, Ogirima said transparency on the part of the presidency would lay to rest doubt, “speculation and confusion surrounding the matter”.

“Nigerians deserve to know the nature of the sickness afflicting their president,” he told New Telegraph.

Also reacting, National President, National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), Dr. John Onyebueze said keeping Buhari’s ailment secret, had already created suspicion in the mind of the public.

His words: “In a family where a father or mother is sick and the circumstance surrounding the illness is hidden from the children, this creates suspicion and mutual distrust.

“As a nation and country, we don’t need this distrust. The nature of the president’s ailment should be disclosed. Nigerians praying for Buhari should know the exact nature of his illness to enable them channel their prayers properly.

“As individuals, as Nigerians and as patriotic citizens of this country, we empathise with President Buhari and his family over the health challenges facing him.

“We should rally round and pray for the quick recovery of the President, rather than make a jest of the situation. He needs our support, our prayers and everything we can do as citizens to support him.”

Onyebueze admitted that ‘this does not take away the fact that we should not constructively criticise the government for improvement and the betterment of the country’.

“If the health sector has been given all the necessary and adequate attention it deserves, Nigerians seeking medical attention would not be travelling overseas for this purpose. This includes President Buhari.”

Meanwhile, a prominent chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kaduna State, Yusuf Ali, has declared that those wishing death for Buhari are powerful persons eyeing his seat in 2019.

PoliticsBuhari’s Condition Same As Yar’adua’s – Horsfall by DONSMITH123(op): 1:54pm On Feb 06, 2017
As the dust raised by the current health status of President Muhammadu Buhari is yet to settle, some Nigerians have said his condition may not be unconnected to that which led to the death of former President, Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.

DAILY POST recalls that Buhari has been on a 10-day vacation in the United Kingdom, UK, , but his stay was extended indefinitely due to ‘health issues’.

But in an exclusive chat with DAILY POST, some Nigerians have raised their voices of concern, asking to see the letter sent by the ‘sick’ president to the National Assembly.

A Nigerian Professor of English, William Ajene Horsfall said, “Special Adviser to the President, Femi Adesina said the President had planned to return to Abuja this evening, but was advised to complete the test cycle before returning. The notice has since been dispatched to the Senate President, and Speaker, House of Representatives.

“What notice? Notice by phone or email or official letter as usual? Who signed the letter? Let us see it and not only a three paragraph letter.

“Remember, President Yar’Adua left Nigeria on 23 November 2009, and

“He was not seen in public again, and his absence created a dangerous power vacuum in Nigeria.

“He battled kidney failure and purportedly challenged his critics to a game of squash in an endeavor to end speculations about his health; this is exactly what is happening with Buhari and his government.

“Further fomenting rumors about his health, he was flown to Germany for medical reasons and we were told it was due to stress. Afterall, whatever we are told, we accept. Mumu!

“If you remember, Yar’Adua was quoted as saying he ‘was fine and would soon be back to campaigning.’ They have said this about Buhari too.

“Like a rumour, Yar’Adua was said to have collapsed after suffering a heart attack – another report which was swiftly dismissed by them.

“Yar’Adua was urged to hand over power to Vice-President, Goodluck Jonathan, in an acting capacity during his illness, but what happened? They kept swindling Nigerians.”

Speaking further, Prof Horsfall said, “On 24 February 2010, Yar’Adua returned to Abuja under the cover of darkness. His state of health was unclear, but there were speculations that he was still on a life support machine, but unfortunately, Yar’Adua died on 5 May at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa.

“There were reactions here and there.

“So, whatever is happening to Buhari is not different from what we know or what we have seen, heard or experienced. We may be looking at Yar’adua’s scenario,” the Professor added.

Similarly, a medical practitioner with one of the government hospitals in Abuja, spoke on condition of anonymity saying, “Just like Wole Soyinka said during Yar’adua’s time, ‘all power in heaven and on earth belongs to God.’

“Playing politics at the expense of someone’s health? No matter how much strength the Presidency thinks Buhari has, he is only human and old for that matter; they should know that the politics of Do-or-Die cannot guarantee who dies or who doesn’t. They must stop playing God.

“In Yar’adua’s time, there was issue of signing or no signing budget. This man was critically ill and a living corpse already who was on life support. Yet, their people said they went to Saudi or wherever Yar’adua was and he (Yar’adua) signed the budget.

“Of course, we knew it was a fake signature, they put it there but the senators (David Mark) looked away then because they wanted the country to be running. At that time, those of us close to government knew something was definitely wrong because it was not funny.

“So, for this one, just like they leaked the letter that Buhari sent to Babachir Lawal, then someone should be able to get hold of the letter that Buhari wrote to NASS, extending his vacation or based on request, let us see the letter with Buhari’s signature because we don’t want a situation where we really don’t know what is going on.

“When people get to know all these facts, trust me, the Presidency will start running helter skelter because they will understand that people have started calculating and using their brains. I was expecting the president won’t extend his stay but now that he has, it just confirms to me that they think Nigerians are stupid.

“That excuse was too dumb…waiting to collect investigation results? Where is he sitting to wait for the result? Is it in front of the consulting room or the laboratory?,” he quizzed rhetorically.

Foreign AffairsZimbabweans To Donate 150 Cows For Mugabe’s Birthday Celebration by DONSMITH123(op): 3:25pm On Feb 03, 2017
Citizens of Southern African nation, Zimbabwe have reportedly been asked to make provision of at least 150 cattle towards the celebration of president Robert Mugabe’s coming birthday as he turns 93 on February 21.

Mugabe has been in power since 1980 when the country gained independence from Britain.

He is also known for extravagant birthday party, which usually would run into millions of dollars.

The state-owned Herald newspaper revealed that this year’s birthday bash organisers said they aimed at realizing at least 150 heads of cattle to serve about 100 000 guests at the occasion.

A Zanu-PF lawmaker, identified as Never Khanye, pointed out that the donations were voluntary, but added that large-scale farmers in Matabeleland South, the venue of the birthday party, must donate a cow each to appreciate the president.

He told the newspaper, “We have set a target to raise 150 cattle for the event. We are appealing to well-wishers to do so willingly and not to come again tomorrow and say we were forced.

“All A2 farmers who got offer letters must donate a beast each for this event and those that will fail we will take it that they don’t appreciate what the president has done for them.”

Youth league of the ruling Zanu-PF said last month that Mugabe’s birthday should be celebrated like that of Christ.

National youth leader of the party, Kudzai Chipanga insisted that the veteran leader’s birthday should not be seen as an “ordinary day.”

He said, “To us, February 21 is not just a day. To us, it is a special day we treat in the same manner Christians treat December 25, the birthday of Jesus Christ.

“I don’t want to be blasphemous, but in my humble view, President Mugabe is second to Jesus Christ. He is our saviour, so his birthday means a lot for us the youths of Zimbabwe.”
