FIdelis Soriwei, Abuja The Indpendent National Electoral Commission has announced the promotion of 1,307 of its staff across the country. The INEC’s decision was contained in its daily bulletin forwarded to our correspondent by the Deputy Director in charge of Voter Education and Publicity, Mr. Nick Dazang, on Wednesday. Dazang said that the commission approved the promotion of the affected personnel after a meeting on Tuesday in Abuja. According to him, “14 were officers promoted from Grade Level 16 to the rank of Grade Level 17 (substantive directors) while 1,293 were officers from Grade Levels 7 to 16.” He said that all those promoted passed their promotion examinations and met the rigorous criteria set by the commission. Dazang stated also that the commission had set up a four-man committee to investigate the role of its personnel in the December 10, 2016 legislative rerun election in Rivers State. He said that the members of the committee included “Professor Okechukwu Ibeanu, Chairman; AVM Ahmed T. Mu’azu, (National Commissioner) member; Professor Jacob Jatau, (Resident Electoral Commissioner, FCT) member; Omoloja Tajudeen, Deputy Director (Discipline).” It was stated that the committee was directed to submit a report of its findings by January 30, 2027. http://punchng.com/inec-promotes-1307-staff-nationwide/

A Governorship aspirant and Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State, Mr Diran Adesua, has described Governor Ayodele Fayose as ‘unfit’ to be governor taking ‘cognizance of his public conduct and outbursts’ in recent time. He said it was ‘appalling and disparaging’ to the Ekiti’s value of honour and integrity , for Governor Fayose to have gone to the bank and made withdrawals from a controversial accounts that had attracted national attention when salaries and pensions were not regularly paid for the past six months. Apparently to prevent implosion in the party and unwarranted suspicion, the APC State Working Committee has barred its members from hobnobbing with any of the governorship ambition ahead of 2018 poll. Fayose had last week stormed Zenith bank to make personal transaction after the Federal High Court in Ado Ekiti directed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to lift the ban placed on the governor’s accounts. Adesua, former Commissioner under Otunba Niyi Adebayo-led government between 1999 and 2003, said the APC stands the chance of dislodging the PDP in Ekiti in 2018 if the primary is allowed to throw up a credible candidate that has grassroots appeal. Speaking on Wednesday during a visit to the APC State Working Committee to unveil his 2018 governorship ambition, Adesua advised Fayose to be wary of his public conduct and the backlash as such would have negative impact on the corporate integrity of an average Ekiti man. “How can a governor went to the bank and came out with bags of money in his hands in a state where salaries, gratuities and pensions were not paid? It is affecting our image negatively and this must stop in 2018”, he said. Adesua, who hails from Omuo Ekiti appealed “to the leadership of the party to be fair to all contestants at the primary , so that we can have a formidable candidate that can defeat the PDP. “In voting at the primary, the delegates must think of a candidate who has the potentials, who understands the problems and the people . I have been civil servant and I never imagined salaries being owed for three months and this I believe can’t happen under a people-oriented governor. “The reason why the APC lost in 2014 was that, there was a disconnect between the government of that time and the people. The citizens and government must be on the same page and this is the reason why we must pick a candidate that is loved by the people”. The Acting Chairman of the Party, Mrs Kemi Olaleye , warned those tagging some members of the party as ‘decampees’ to desist from such, saying APC has only one united family. “All the contestants are our children. The SWC in Ekiti will be fair to all. We will treat everybody as equals because no law in the country bars anybody from joining any political party of his choice. Even Governor Fayose can join APC , but it is only that we don’t want a character like him in APC. “No aspirant must lobby SWC members, rather go and lobby the delegates, that is where you can get your votes”, she warned. Residents of Asaba, Delta State, who are currently celebrating the release of their former governor, James Ibori, may have to wait till well after January 2017 before they can physically embrace their son. According to reports, on Tuesday, a London High court had ruled that the Home Office could no longer hold the ex-governor who had served six-and-a-half-years of his 13-year jail term, as the sentence ran concurrently. Ibori was subsequently released on Wednesday morning. The British Home Office had made an unsuccessful attempt to prevent his release, claiming that Ibori’s assets confiscation hearing was inconclusive. However, on Wednesday, the presiding Judge, Mrs. Justice May, who heard an emergency appeal filed by Ibori to enforce his rights, rejected the Home Office’s request to continue to detain him. In her ruling, Justice May ordered his immediate release without conditions attached. It was however gathered that the ex-governor has to report to the Police once a week, hence his inability to return to Nigeria immediately. He is reported to be currently restricted to his St. John’s Wood residence. May ordered both parties to return to court in January. Meanwhile, Ibori has appealed his conviction for money laundering and graft. Cc: lalasticlala, Mynd44 http://punchng.com/breaking-though-released-jail-ibori-cant-come-home-yet/

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has dismissed probe of an audio clip that circulated after the legislative rerun election. Recall that the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Mr Ibrahim Idris has set up a panel to probe the audio as well as some Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, officials. In his reaction, Wike accused security agencies of working for the All Progressives Congress (APC) . Wike said it was unfortunate that despite being the chief security officer, some heads of security agencies in the state take orders from powers that be. In a chat with newsmen, Wike said: “Tell INEC, tell the Nigerian police, tell the Nigerian security that I want free and fair elections. “What causes violence? I was here and they wanted to stop the results of my senatorial district from being declared. If in the course of resisting rigging, they shoot somebody, will there not be violence? “Why will you carry materials and give to the other party to the detriment of the other party? We said, allow everybody to vote. Now, you use security agencies to hijack the materials, to beat up our agents. “Why can’t they tell you the simple truth? If they conduct free and fair elections in this State today, who will win? Who is going to lose if there’s violence? “We want elections. Let’s see who is more popular. You (APC) don’t want election. You want to bring collation officers that will do your own bidding. “You want to bring INEC officers to do your own bidding. We have no problem, bring whoever you want to bring, but let there be elections. When you win, you won’t blame the person that collated. What kind of system is this? “The only condition for peace in Rivers is free and fair elections like it’s done all over the world”. On probe of the audio clip, Governor Wike replied: “You look at me and I’ll talk to INEC adhoc staff? And they said I asked where the man is from…the person I gave money and I don’t know where he comes from? “Okay, it resembles my voice? I can plant your voice now. Even as I am now, you can take my voice and plant somewhere. Let them bring their own video evidence. We have shown ours where you can see what policemen were doing during the election. I hear they said it was through somebody’s phone that I spoke. “The only person I can even talk to as far as INEC is concerned is the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) or the national chairman or commissioner of INEC. “Why will I even descend (so low ) to talk to an adhoc staff? We have over 2,000 INEC adhoc staff. Which one did I talk to? Which one did I not talk to? So, please discard some of these stories”. “Investigate who? Embark on an inquiry on who? We have video evidence of police helping to rig the election for them (APC), but they are denying that they are not policemen. “Police is denying something everyone saw the SARS (Special Anti-Robbery Squad) man that came. You are saying they are not policemen”. Wike, who insisted that the election was rigged for the APC, added “Let them show us the server where they offloade the result. Let them show us. “Let me tell you why nobody can come after me. Nobody can take my life. Only God can. He gives, he takes. You who is planning to take, who told you you’ll be there tomorrow?” “They took my orderly, they took my Chief Security Officer, they took my escort commander. You don’t know God’s plans. People should take it easy. Anything can happen tomorrow. You never can tell” Cc: lalasticlala, Mynd44 http://dailypost.ng/2016/12/21/nobody-can-kill-probe-audio-tape-joke-wike/

The staff of Arik Air are currently staging a protest at the domestic terminal of the Murtala Muhammed airport over the airline’s failure to pay seven months salary arrears and other anti-labour practices. The protesters displayed placards containing messages communicating their grievances. The National Union of Air Transport Employees, Air Transport Senior Staff Services Association of Nigeria and the National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers had in a joint statement on Monday ordered its members to commence the strike. The unions said the strike would continue indefinitely, until their demands are met by the management of Arik Air. Their demands include total unionisation of Arik Air employees, recall of all sacked employees and payment of salary arrears for seven months and a commitment to pay salaries as at when due, henceforth.” They also called for the immediate review of all employee remunerations which had remained the same since the inception of Arik Air, over ten years ago. http://punchng.com/breaking-protesting-arik-workers-shut-lagos-operations/

Olalekan Adetayo, Abuja The Senate Leader, Ali Ndume, on Monday said contrary to the information currently available to the public, the Upper Chamber of the National Assembly has not rejected the nomination of Mr. Ibrahim Magu as the chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. He said what the Senate had done was just to step down Magu’s screening until issues surrounding the security report concerning him are cleared. He also said contrary to media reports, the Senate had not indicted the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr. Babachir Lawal, of any wrongdoing. He said Lawal’s investigation by the Senate was still work in progress. Ndume spoke with State House correspondents shortly meeting President Muhammadu Buhari behind closed door at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. On Magu, he said what Senate will do is to clear from President Muhammadu Buhari whether it should go ahead with his approval process despite the security report. Ife Ogunfuwa A new national labour movement called United Labour Congress of Nigeria has been formed by 25 industrial unions from the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria on Saturday. The ULC elected 13 executives to drive its mandate in which the General Secretary of the National Union of Electricity Employees, Joseph Ajaero, emerged as its National President. In addition, Igwe Achese of Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, became its Deputy President; K. Kadiri became its National Vice President while Onyeka Chris emerged as its acting General Secretary. In a communiqué issued at the end of its inaugural delegates’ conference, the congress said there was an urgent need for a rebirth of the organised labour in order to recreate a movement capable of fulfilling its potential to Nigerian workers, masses and Nigeria. Members of the union pledged to restore hope to Nigerian workers who were being victimised, and neglected, adding that it would defend the rights of oppressed Nigerians in a bid to make governance more effective and responsive. They observed that the existing labour unions had been compromised by forces that did not have its interest, that of Nigerians at heart, saying that there was need for a refining and strengthening of trade unionism.
