The All Progressives Congress (APC) has approved the replacement of the former Senate Leader, Senator Ali Ndume, with Senator Ahmed Lawan. APC national publicity secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, in a statement, called the development a concrete expression of faith by the APC Senate Caucus in efforts to resolve the lingering issues that trailed the election of Senate leadership. “We believe this is a major step forward in our efforts to reunite the various interest groups in that Senate election, thereby presenting a common legislative front for our great party,” he said. “We are particularly delighted that the consultations that were initiated towards the end of 2015 between the party caucuses in the National Assembly and the party executives as well as other leading stakeholders of our party has yielded these results and the Senate has demonstrated its willingness to finally submit to the will of the party in this regard. “With this development therefore, we are confident that the issues arising from the elections in the Senate in 2015 have been put to rest”, he added. APC recalled that the party leadership had resolved that Senator Lawan be compensated with the position of the Senate Leader soon after the issue of election in the Senate occurred. He said the directive was not fully complied with at the time, but expressed happiness to see the change effected, stressing that it represents a significant progress in efforts to build a strong and united party. APC congratulated Senator Lawan on his election and expresses hope that he would use his vast experience and knowledge to enhance legislative works and its agenda of change. APC also assured Nigerians that it would continue to work under the leadership and guidance of President Muhammadu Buhari to resolve any other pending issues that might have affected the party at different levels. The ruling party also thanked Senator Ndume for his service and sacrifice to the party, which, it added, would not be forgotten. Niyi Odebode and Ifeanyi Onuba Former President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday said he did not send the Chairman of AA Oil, Abubakar Aliyu, or any other person to collect bribe in the $1.3bn Malabu oil deal. Jonathan, who stated this in a statement in Abuja by his Media Adviser, Ikechukwu Eze, said that the negotiations and transactions for the $1.3bn oil deal involving oil giants ENI and Royal Dutch Shell, predated his Presidency, which began on May 6, 2010. He stated, “We make bold to point out that the former President never sent any Abubakar Aliyu, as the innuendoes in the false report suggest, to ENI, the IOCs or any indigenous operator to seek favour or collect any gratification on his behalf.” Jonathan faulted news reports, which indicated that he received kickbacks in the $1.3bn oil block deal involving oil giants ENI and Royal Dutch Shell. He stated, “We wish to make it clear that former President Jonathan was not accused, indicted or charged for corruptly collecting any money as kickbacks or bribes from ENI by the Italian authorities or any other law enforcement body the world over.” The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, had a few weeks ago filed seven counts bordering on the Malabu scam against nine defendants, including the immediate past Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Mohammed Adoke (SAN). Other accused persons named in the charges, filed by the EFCC, are Etete, Aliyu Abubakar, Malabu Oil & Gas Limited, Rocky Top Resources Limited, Imperial Union Ltd., Novel Properties & Development Company Ltd., Group Construction Ltd. and Megatech Engineering Ltd. The Malabu oil scam, which has been under investigation for over four years, relates to the billions of dollars paid by oil giants, Shell and ENI, into a Federal Government account, for OPL 245, considered the richest oil block in Africa. The money was allegedly diverted by Adoke and paid into private accounts Details later Cc: lalasticlala, Mynd44 http://punchng.com/breaking-didnt-send-anybody-receive-bribe-jonathan/ |

- The trial of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra Nnamdi Kanu will commence today, January 10 - Kanu is expected to appear before Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court - Nyako had in her last ruling approved an application by the Department of State Securities to protect witnesses that will testify against Kanu The secret trial of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra will commence today, January 10. Kanu is expected to appear before Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja. The commencement of his trial comes after Nyako granted an application filed by the Department of State Securities on December 14. The DSS had in its application asked the court to allow the institution to protect its witnesses slated to testify against the court. While it is not yet clear whether the IPOB leader will appeal the decision of the court, Kanu had during his last court appearance vehemently rejected the court’s decision to try him secretly. Kanu in an outburst said, President Muhammadu Buhari had accused him in the public and for that, he would accept the decision of the court to subject him to a secret trial. In his outburst, the IPOB leader also said the president cannot jail him Also, referring to the maiden presidential media where President Buhari made a few comments about him and the former national security adviser, Kanu also cautioned the president to always guard his utterances especially when speaking in public. The IPOB leader is facing charges of treasonable felony, mismanagement of an unlawful society and concealing of goods in a container alongside three other accused persons. Ramon Oladimeji The ongoing trial of a former Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, Patrick Akpobolokemi, and five others for an alleged fraud of N2.6bn was stalled on Monday. The hearing was stalled due to the absence of the last witness for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Mr. Chukwuma Orji. Orji, who is an investigator with the anti-graft agency, was said to have gone a trip to the UK with the acting Chairman of the EFCC, Mr. Ibrahim Magu, for a meeting with the National Crime Agency, UK. When Akpobolokemi’s case was called on Monday, the lawyer, who appeared for the EFCC, Mr. Marcel Umeh, informed Justice Ibrahim Buba of the Lagos Federal High Court of the development. Umeh said he knew very late that Orji, the last EFCC’s witness in the case, had travelled out of the country, and which was the reason he hadn’t written to inform the court. While regretting all the inconveniences the development might have caused the court and the defence team, Umeh pleaded for an adjournment. In response, one of the defence counsel, Mr. Edoka Onyeke, expressed dissatisfaction with the adjournment and prayed the court to issue a date in February, which would be convenient for all the parties. Other defence counsel aligned themselves with Onyeke’s position. In his ruling, Justice Buba, who said he clocked 59 on Monday, expressed displeasure at the turn of even, noting that he purposely came to court to attend to the case, which was the only case listed on his cause list for the day. “I am 59 years old today, and I am here in court prepared to go on with the matter hoping we would make progress; if I had this idea that the court will not sit then I wouldn’t have bothered. “This is the only case listed in my diary for the week and I came here with the hope that there would be a remarkable progress,” the judge said. The case was eventually adjourned till February 28, 2016 for the EFCC’s last witness to be cross-examined by the the defence counsel. Akpobolokemi was arraigned before Justice Buba on December 4, 2015 on 22 counts of alleged N2.6bn fraud perpetrated within NIMASA between December 2013 and May 2015. The other defendants in the charge are Ezekiel Agaba, Ekene Nwakuche, Governor Juan, Blockz and Stonz Limited, and Al-Kenzo Logistic Limited as defendants.
