The Nigerian Army on Wednesday said it had recovered Abubakar Shekau’s Qur’an and flag in Camp Zero, the Boko Haram’s Headquarters in Sambisa forest.

The Theatre Commander of Operation Lafiya Dole, Maj.-Gen. Lucky Irabor, said this while giving newsmen update on “Operation Rescue Final’’ in Maiduguri.

He said, “We believe that the Holy Book and the flag were abandoned by Abubakar Shekau while he escaped.

“The Book will be taken to the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Burutai, for onward presentation to Mr. President.

“We have also made a lot of arrests. Our troops in Damboa arrested about 15 Boko Haram members. We also arrested one Musa from Potiskum on Christmas day which was Dec.25.

“On Dec. 26 our troops also intercepted two Boko Haram suspects in Maiduguri.

“We, therefore, warn residents of the state to be wary of people coming to hide in and around their houses.

“We are also warning residents to report any suspected Boko Haram members hiding in their houses to the relevant security agencies and any failure to do that would tantamount to supporting and sympathising with the sect’s activities.”

The Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, on Wednesday released severance allowance cheques totalling N1.5bn to former political appointees that served under the immediate past governor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, between 2007 and 2011 and those that served under him(Amosun) during his first term between 2011 and 2015.

A total of 663 ex-political appointees made up of former commissioners, special assistants among others, were presented with their severance allowance cheques at the Arcade ground, Oke Mosan, Abeokuta.

The governor said the money was disbursed to all ex-political office holders irrespective of their political affiliations.

He said, “It does not matter which political party or administration you have served, what matters is that you have served the state diligently and you deserve your entitlement.”

Amosun noted that beyond the intention of his government to ensure that all those who had served the state diligently, were amply rewarded, the payment of the severance allowance would also directly impact positively on the economy of the state.

He assured the residents of more significant development, adding that his administration would leave the state better than it met it.

He said, “The state is now the industrial capital of the nation as about 110 multi-national companies have so far opened shop in the state.”

Amosun also hinted that the proposed light rail project would start in the first quarter of year 2017.

Speaking with journalists after the presentation, one of the beneficiaries, the former Commissioner For Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Aare Tunde Alabi, appreciated the governor “for keeping to his promise to pay former political appointees, notwithstanding their political leanings.”

A Chieftain and Governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Dakuku Peterside has dismissed as laughable the Judicial Commission of Inquiry of the State Government on the rerun elections.

Peterside said the action by Governor Wike is like the proverbial witch who cried at night and a child dies the following day.

The Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency noted in a statement released by his media team that Governor Wike continues to ridicule the office he occupies.

He wandered if the Governor does not have people around him who should be telling him the truth.

He said it amazes him how Governor Wike would be taken seriously in his inquiry after he told Rivers people not to attend an investigative panel set up by the Nigeria Police Force.

Peterside also questioned the motive of Governor WIKE’s Commission of Inquiry when he accused the Police of having predetermined aim of investigating acts of violence during the rerun elections.

The APC chieftain advised members of the panel led by Justice Chiwendu Nwogu not to allow themselves to be used by Governor WIKE to achieve a dubious end.

He said the same mission was intended with the Justice Omereji Panel on the aborted rerun on 19th March.
According to him, “are there no people telling the governor the truth. Here is a governor who told Rivers people not to attend an investigative panel set up by Police to probe issues surrounding the election and an audio that went viral where the governor threatened INEC officials with death.

“Is it not laughable that the same governor has now set up a Judicial Commission of Inquiry to probe issues surrounding the election and he expects Rivers people to obey him. What manner of a governor is Nyesom Wike?

“How can a responsible governor be urging Rivers people to be lawless, how can such a governor call Rivers people not to obey police investigation and yet expects the same people to obey his own kangaroo judicial commission?

“The same Wike accused police of seeking to achieve a predetermined goal in its investigation to nail PDP members and I ask, what goal is the governor seeking to achieve with his own panel of inquiry, to exonerate PDP members and pronounce APC members guilty?

“I call on the Justice Chinwendu Nwogu-led panel to be very careful not to be used by Wike to achieve a dubious end. We all recall the Omereji panel and what the governor wanted to use it to achieve. In the end, his evil plan failed.

“Justice Nwogu was only recently made a judge by Nyesom Wike. I hope the he is not being used to do the bidding of the governor and PDP. My admonition to the judge is that he should know that posterity awaits him if he allows himself to be used by the governor.”

The Ovie of Agbarha-Warri Kingdom in the Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State, Orhifi Orovwagbarha Agbarha-Ide Ememoh II, who was abducted on Wednesday, has been rescued by operatives of state’s police command less than 24-hour after he was kidnapped.

The monarch was rescued by a team of local vigilante groups and the Delta State Police Command led by its commissioner, Mr. Zanna Ibrahim, at about 3:12am on Thursday morning.

A palace chief confirmed the released of the Urhobo monarch to our correspondent on Thursday morning when contacted.

The Agbarha-Warri paramount ruler was abducted on Wednesday along the Ughelli/Asaba Expressway near Ossissa community in Ndokwa-East Local Government Area of the state while traveling for a Security Summit in Asaba, the state capital.

The state police commissioner confirmed the rescued of the traditional ruler to our correspondent on telephone, saying would be conveyed to Asaba, where he was headed before the incident, but was relaxing in an undisclosed hotel as of the time of the phone conversation.

The commsioner said the monarch was rescued after he led a team of hundred police operatives and 30 local vigilante groups to comb the Ossissa forest along the area where he was waylaid by suspected herdsmen who had earlier robbed vehicles plying the busy road.

Ibrahim said, “The Ovie has been rescued by a police crack team personally led by me. The monarch’s abductors were fleeing with him to a different location after our men combed the entire bush in search for him.

“The monarch was abducted by herdsmen. They are very conversant with the bush even more than the indigenes. Our men sighted the movement of the hoodlums through a torch light and we shot into the air which they responded. They engaged us (police) in exchange of gun fire and left the monarch behind.

“There was laxity on the part of the driver who sighted the kidnappers robbing other vehicles but refused to reverse the car for safety. We have learnt our lessons from the kidnap of the monarch. The lesson is that we all need to be alert and vigilant.”

The commissioner added that no arrest was made during the rescue operation but police operatives have been deployed in the area to smoke out the suspects.
