Politics / PDP Congratulates Scotland Over Decision To Stay Under United Kingdom by Dotman01(m): 12:56pm On Sep 20, 2014
The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, on Friday in
Abuja applauded the decision of Scotland to
remain under the United Kingdom and urged
Nigerians to remain united.
Olisa Metuh, the party’s National Publicity
Secretary, in a statement, said the decision
showed that citizens could indeed push through
their resolve to live together peacefully.
He added that the decision further proved that
citizens could leave together as one people with
a common destiny in spite of perceived or real
differences.
Mr. Metuh stressed the resolve of Nigerians to
live in a united and peaceful nation “just like the
people of Scotland had chosen to preserve their
over 300 years union by voting to stay in
Britain”.
This, he said, was irrespective of their
challenges of ethnic diversity.
“We might be different in our tongues, tribes
and religious affiliations but, as one people, let
us not dwell on these differences.
“But rather magnify those things that bind us
together so that we continue to live together in
peace, love and unity,’’ Mr. Metuh said.
According to him, the challenges facing the
nation, are transitory and incapable of defeating
the collective spirit of the people.
He, therefore, urged Nigerians to ensure that
their thoughts and actions were always guided
by national interest and values that would unite
and bind all citizens in love.
The PDP spokesman added that it was
incontrovertible that Nigeria remained stronger
and more prosperous as one nation.
The statement called on citizens to put the unity
of the nation above every other personal and
sectional interest in their dealings and
aspirations.
It charged all PDP elected and appointed
officials at all levels of government nationwide
to redouble their efforts in the prudent handling
of resources as encapsulated in the party`s
manifesto.
This, it said, was critical to ensure that the
people would not only continue to enjoy the
benefits of having the PDP in power but vote
enmasse for it in the 2015 general elections.
Majority of voters in Scotland voted to stay in
the United Kingdom on Thursday.
Over 2 million people, or 55.3 per cent of
registered voters, said “No” to independence,
with over 1.6 million, or 44.7 per cent, in the
“Yes” camp.
Scotland had been under the United Kingdom
for over 300 years (NAN).

Politics / US Widow Wins $23.6bn Tobacco Payout by Dotman01(m): 11:40pm On Jul 20, 2014
A US court has ordered the country's second
largest cigarette company to pay $23.6 billion
(£13.8bn) to the wife of a smoker who died of
lung cancer.
RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company was hit with the
punitive fine in addition to $16.8m (£9.8m) in
compensatory damages.
Cynthia Robinson took action against the firm in
2008, seeking compensation for her husband's
death in 1996.
A company official said the verdict was ``grossly
excessive and impermissible under state and
constitutional law.''
During the four-week trial, lawyers for Ms
Robinson argued that RJ Reynolds was negligent
in informing consumers of the dangers of
consuming tobacco.
This negligence, the lawyers said, led to her
husband Michael Johnson Sr contracting lung
cancer from smoking after becoming "addicted"
and failing multiple attempts to quit.
'A message for tobacco firms'
"RJ Reynolds took a calculated risk by
manufacturing cigarettes and selling them to
consumers without properly informing them of
the hazards," Ms Robinson's lawyer Willie Gary
said.
"We hope that this verdict will send a message
to RJ Reynolds and other big tobacco companies
that will force them to stop putting the lives of
innocent people in jeopardy," he added.
RJ Reynolds plans to appeal against the court's
decision, vice president and assistant general
counsel Jeffery Raborn said in a statement.
"This verdict goes far beyond the realm of
reasonableness and fairness, and is completely
inconsistent with the evidence presented," he
said.
``We plan to file post-trial motions with the
trial court promptly, and are confident that the
court will follow the law and not allow this
runaway verdict to stand.''
The punitive damages awarded to Ms Robinson
were said to be the largest of any individual
case stemming from a class action lawsuit filed
in Florida.
Several similar cases have resulted in smaller
payouts after the state's highest court ruled
that smokers and their families only had to
prove addiction and that smoking caused their
illness.

The concert which started that night was
headlined by Africa’s biggest act Davido. The 21

Politics / Pdp’s 14 Years Of ‘greatness’ By Japheth Omojuwa by Dotman01(m): 8:15pm On Sep 08, 2013
The Peoples Democratic Party held what it called
a ‘special’ convention on Saturday, August 31,
2013 in Abuja. The party, according to the
faction that met at the Eagle Square, wants to
be seen as having succeeded in bringing Nigeria
to a great place in the comity of nations. I
believe the PDP is great if we choose to see
greatness from its other side . I will use selected
realities to make this point: First, education.
It is very easy to score the party extremely low
here because university students and lecturers
are currently at home as is often the case. This
would be the reason to score them low but it
would not be the only reason. Just look at the
state of education in Nigeria apart from the
ASUU strikes and what you get would be nothing
short of a disaster. No Nigerian with the means
and valued sense of education would send his/
her child to Nigeria’s glorified secondary schools
called universities. A computer engineering
student studying at one of the nation’s top
public universities confessed he had never done
a thing on a computer despite being in his third
year at a university the President cared enough
to change its name but not its fortunes. The
West African Examinations Council’s results are
these days noted more for the failure rates than
their functionality as a tool for separating
students and identifying their various academic
abilities. Most students fail anyway. Nigerian
students now find themselves in places like
Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania not to mention Ghana,
the United Kingdom, the United States,
Singapore and the likes. The PDP has succeeded
in killing education in Nigeria. It was a smart
move for them. It is always dangerous to have
too many educated people in a population to
make demands about their human rights and
just ask too many questions. So then, we have a
kind of democracy quite all right but our “great
party” has ensured a majority of the people are
more concerned about what they eat rather
than what schools their children go to. Over 10
million Nigerian children are out of school. This
is a world record and the PDP being a great
party is already on course to add to this number
next year.
Then Infrastructure.
The much-maligned military governments built
majority of the airports if not all the airports we
have in Nigeria. When these airports were built,
they were good enough to be called airports;
today, considering what we have around the
world, we can safely call ours airstrips. They are
nothing better than garages in other climes.
Most train stations in saner climes are better
equipped than most of our airports. Ask any
Nigerian who travels out of this country, any of
them with a conscience that cares about our
country and they’d tell you their first point of
sadness are the airports they see upon arrival in
other places, even places like Ethiopia not to
talk of the United Arab Emirates that make ours
look like their public toilets at best. So then, in
14 years of running this country with tens of
trillions of naira to boot, the PDP – what some
call a great party – has yet to deliver one, just
one major airport to this country. Instead, they
are gleefully renovating what the military built.
We should not even talk about roads. To show
how much and how bad things have since
become, they threw a party to celebrate the
award of the contract for the renovation of the
Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. As we speak, months
after that public display of national mediocrity
that had the President himself dancing, nothing
has been done. The road remains in a shambles
that it has always been.
Power is on the right track. The privatisation
process is on course. If done the right way to
the last letter, this is one area the current
government could write its name in gold.
As regards the economy, make no mistakes, the
Nigerian economy has largely grown since 1999
and this growth has only been dwarfed by
another kind of growth; poverty! The growth of
the Nigerian economy has benefited a few to the
detriment of the majority. As of the last count,
this growing economy still cannot guarantee four
out of five graduates jobs, it cannot keep seven
out of 10 Nigerians out of poverty and it has
ensured a majority of Nigerians depend on
families and friends to keep body and soul
together. In perspective, there are just as many
poor Nigerians today as they were Nigerians in
1998. What is the point of a growing economy
that also grows poverty? Do we deny the reality
of poverty because international organisations
and aunty Ngozi tell us our economy is growing?
The PDP has done extraordinarily well here;
growing an economy during periods of
increasing world oil prices while simultaneously
breeding a society of more poor people than
there are people in West Africa outside of itself.
And considering indices like maternal mortality,
child mortality and life expectancy, every
passing day, more women die trying to give
birth in Nigeria than at most other places in the
world. Almost 53,000 Nigerian women and girls
die of pregnancy- related issues every year!
According to UNICEF, some 20 per cent of child
deaths in sub-Saharan Africa occur in Nigeria.
According to the World Health Organisation,
almost 400 out of 1000 Nigerians die before
they are 60 years of age. That is apart from the
number that die before the age of 15. Should
we talk about the fact that had any of the major
delegates fallen from the podium at the
convention venue, they would have been flown
to India to have their heads checked faster than
it takes for these hypocrites to see that today,
we are worse off than we were in 1999. When
you realise how much has gone down the drains
to have us where we are today; — a people
without direction and hope for a better
tomorrow — you will weep for our beloved
country. Some Nigerians would wish these
brigands were wiped off the face of the earth.
One cannot begin to outline the failures of
Nigeria since 1999. One way to know how bad it
is would be to pay attention to what Nigerian
governments celebrate these days. Gone are the
days when projects were inaugurated after
completion; these days things are so bad that
projects are celebrated for being awarded to
contractors. This says it all about where we are
today compared to where we used to be. All
hope is not lost but you cannot solve a problem
you insist does not exist. As long as the ruling
party continues to celebrate itself as having
helped Nigeria succeed over the past 14 years,
then we are safe to agree that we are in a really
bad place. No country moves forward being led
by a group of largely deluded rulers who are
perpetually obsessed with perpetuating their
gluttonous selves in power rather than making
the country work.
Nigeria has a long way to go, not essentially
because things are so bad we can’t fix them but
because those expected to fix them believe we
have never had it so good. Isn’t that what they
mean when they say each mediocre step of the
current government is “in line with the
transformation agenda”?

Phones / Re: Blackberry May Put Itself Up For Sale by Dotman01(m): 11:27pm On Aug 12, 2013
Is this the end for blackberry users?. . Only time will tell
Phones / Blackberry May Put Itself Up For Sale by Dotman01(m): 11:26pm On Aug 12, 2013
TORONTO (Reuters) - Struggling smartphone
maker BlackBerry is mulling options that could
include joint ventures, partnerships or an
outright sale, as the company's leading
shareholder steps down from its board in a
possible prelude to taking a different role.
BlackBerry, which pioneered on-your-hip email
with its first smartphones and email pagers,
said on Monday it had set up a committee to
review its options, sparking debate over whether
Canada's one-time crown jewel is more valuable
as a whole or snapped up piece by piece by
competitors or private investors.
The company said Prem Watsa, whose Fairfax
Financial Holdings Ltd is BlackBerry's biggest
shareholder, was leaving the board to avoid a
possible conflict of interest as BlackBerry
determines its next steps.
The resignation of Watsa, often described as
Canada's version of Warren Buffett, suggests
Fairfax may be part of a solution.
BlackBerry, once a stock market darling, has bled
market share to the likes of Apple Inc and
phones using Google Inc's Android operating
system, and its new BlackBerry 10 smartphones
have failed to gain traction with consumers.
Blackberry shares rose 7.5 percent to $10.80 in
New York and C$10.84 in Toronto in afternoon
trading. But the shares remain well below the
levels seen in June, before the company
reported dismal results that included poor sales
of the BlackBerry 10 phones it viewed as key to
a successful turnaround.
The share price peaked at about C$150 in June
2008.
A clean balance sheet makes the smartphone
seller an enticing takeover candidate. Like Dell
Inc, it is a tech icon in need of a turnaround.
But BlackBerry's cash flow is worse, meaning
leverage would be extra risky.
The company's assets include a well-regarded
services business that powers BlackBerry's
security-focused messaging system, worth $3
billion to $4.5 billion; a collection of patents that
could be worth $2 billion to $3 billion; and $3.1
billion in cash and investments, according to
analysts.
But the smartphones that bear its name have
little or no value, and it may cost $2 billion to
shutter that unit, the analysts said.
Analysts expressed skepticism about the new
committee, noting that BlackBerry announced
similar steps more than a year ago when it hired
JPMorgan and RBC as financial advisers. A
source said both are still involved in the
strategic review.
"While a change in structure could result in a
higher stock price in the near term, we do not
envision any changes that would help BlackBerry
reverse the significant smartphone share loss or
rapid decline in service revenues," said Tim
Long, analyst at BMO Capital Markets.
Watsa said Fairfax has "no current intention" to
sell its BlackBerry shares. But if he remained on
the board of directors, he would have a conflict
of interest if he wanted to be part of a play for
BlackBerry.
"I continue to be a strong supporter of the
company, the board and management as they
move forward during this process," he said in a
statement.
BlackBerry's fate is likely to prompt questions
from the Canadian government, which vets
foreign takeovers of Canadian firms. The
government said it would not comment on
speculation about the company, but a
spokesman for Industry Minister James Moore
said the government wished BlackBerry well.
BREATHING ROOM
A source familiar with the situation told Reuters
that the board decided to form the special
committee last week. It was not clear if that
decision was made before or after Reuters
reported that BlackBerry was warming to the
idea of going private to give itself breathing
room to recover.
One source said BlackBerry has been talking to
private equity firm Silver Lake Partners about
potential collaboration in enterprise computing.
A senior executive at a large Canadian pension
fund that has worked with private equity players
said on Friday that any prudent pension fund
would look at BlackBerry or consider partnering
in a private equity deal.
"If private equity can buy Dell, they can buy
anything," the executive said, referring to efforts
by Silver Lake and Dell Inc founder Michael Dell
to buy the computer maker.
Deep-pocketed Canadian pension funds, with
their long investment horizons, are among those
with the money and domestic credentials to take
a run at BlackBerry.
Legal experts say any deal taking BlackBerry
private would work best if it had Canadian
involvement, given Ottawa's reviews of big
takeovers for competitive and national security
reasons.
"There is little question that the federal
government would prefer a made-in-Canada
approach," said Subrata Bhattacharjee, co-chair
of the national trade and competition group at
the Heenan Blaikie law firm in Toronto.
"A foreign strategic investor would certainly have
to consider some very significant regulatory
issues, including domestic and foreign antitrust
concerns ... Some foreign investors might also
have to address national security concerns,"
Bhattacharjee said.
BlackBerry said board member Timothy Dattels,
a former investment banker and Goldman Sachs
executive, will chair the new committee, which
will also include BlackBerry Chief Executive
Thorsten Heins.
Dattels is a senior partner at private equity firm
TPG Capital and a former top investment banker
at Goldman Sachs. His appointment to
BlackBerry's board in June last year sparked a
flurry of speculation that the company might
consider a leveraged buyout or going private.
BlackBerry's new line of devices hit store shelves
this year just as the high-end smartphone
segment was showing signs of saturation in
markets like the United States. Samsung
Electronics Co Ltd recently reported results that
fell shy of expectations, while Apple earlier this
year reported its first quarterly profit decline in
more than a decade.
On the mid- to low end of the market,
competition is growing intense, with Chinese
manufacturers such as Huawei Technologies and
ZTE gaining ground.
