AlphaHandMaiden:
How old is he? Sometimes the answer is finger foods. You can cut boiled or fried yam/potatoes soft boiled carrots, toast and the like and just give him after his 4 or so spoons. He will eat it at his own pace. Try not to give too much snacks, as he may start prefering that to proper food. Also do not leave him unsupervised when he is self feeding due to the risk of choking.

I always make sure i have bread at home so if my dd is being fussy which she usually isn't, i give her toast sliced to a size she can hold. And she will sit there happily sucking it, tearing it up, throwing it around and going back to pick up the pieces to eat.

The only downside is the cleaning up afterwards...lol.
Thanks a lot ma for your response...I can see now I spell your moniker wrong...

We are 12 days shy of 13 months. I will keep trying though, have given him lots of finger foods except toast n dodo. I stopped the snacks over 3 weeks now. We tried this afternoon, he finished his beans n fish porridge...yaay!!!

The cleaning up is the most annoying part...I have devised a new strategy of putting their highchairs on the mat...so, once they are through all I need clean is the mat n not the carpet...whew!

Thanks once again...

Hello mothers in the house: Onegai, AlphaHandMaiden, Rofemiguwa, Soonest, Doubledouble, Tojued, Helovesme and all other mamas, please;

My DS of 7weeks has been pooing all day. Pooed a total of 5 times today. It started yesterday evening. Please what can I do about this? Please.
It's also worth mentioning that he is not on breastmilk at all, sad only NAN1.

About the breastmilk, please I need advice on that too. When he was born, I didn't lactate immediately. Eventually I did but he just won't latch on. I expressed both with my hand and with a manual breast pump, even at midnight like mama AlphaHandMaiden advised, the most I ever got was 90ml!
And then the breastmilk started dwindling to 10/15ml. Till I stopped all together.

Now the doctor wants to bring back the breastmilk, placed me on a med already. My question is, even if breastmilk supply comes back, how do I make DS latch? As at today, he still wouldn't latch.
How do I keep breastmilk from drying up again?

Please mothers in the house, all suggestions, ideas, advices are welcome. Thank you.
Hello. For a fully formula fed baby, 5 times is a bit suspicious but that doesn't mean there's anything wrong. Make sure your hygiene is top notch and your source of water potable. Formula not taken under an hour should be discarded. Do not premix your formula and put in the refrigerator. Once your handling, storage and hygiene on everything to do with baby is excellent, then we can cross that out.

Check the consistency and colour of the poop. The poop tells you a lot about baby's health. If everything is good, it could be baby has a very active metabolism. Just free baby...he/she will adjust with time.

On bringing back breast milk... I personally, don't like the use of medication...just take a lot of fluid, ewedu, fenugreek, pap, soups and all. Also put baby to breast very very often, pump a lot as well...these will signal the brain and gradually it will come back. There's a tea that helps too: Mothers Milk shatavari cardamom. Basil and fennel oil does wonders too.

If you want to use meds, herbal is better: Motherlove more milk plus is good. It is in form of a capsule. Milk thistle herb is excellent too. In all, for all these to work you still have to put baby to breast a lot and pump a lot too.

On latching, didn't you go for antenatal classes at all?? I don't mean to be rude or diss you. Antenatal classes is important for mothers to be as you learn a lot there, especially as a FTM. Well, it can't be taught with words...you need demonstrations, so I will advise you check youtube for that. There's this particular channel that is by a RN, but can't remember. Helovesme, onegai, alphaandmaiden, ozycy and all mamas pls help out on the youtube channel to see the right way to breastfeed a baby.

Wishing you all the best on this journey!

Cheers

Apologies I'm just replying.

Have you tried sweet potatoes combo? Babies tend to love sweet potatoes.

Mashed sweet potatoes with diced boiled chicken works well. Sweet potatoes with mixed vegetables (carrot, sweet corn, green peas, broccoli) is also another fab combo. You can interchange sweet potatoes with Irish
Thanks a lot for your detailed response always...

I have tried all these and more...he takes a little at the beginning of the feed and just loses interest after 4 tiny spoons...I have become musician, clown, MC, everything I tell you...only thing he takes willingly is Gerber lil crunchies (cheese ball) n puffs! Is that food?? Tiring but will just keep trying...God help me!

Thanks once more

Mama pls tish me o. I m interested in this g.nut matter. U blend roasted g.nut into powder and then mix in his cereals?
Me still learning too oo...I blended into powder in the recent paste but wasn't super smooth and my LOs are still smoothy feeders...so whilst blending the recent batch, I just decided to add a little and transfer into the wet mill...

I bought groundnut-the small sized ones, learnt they are more nutritious than the big ones- I parboiled it a bit drained the water and left it to dry. I then put a pot on the stove, warmed it up and added the garri. Add the groundnut when the garri is a little hot, keep stirring till it starts making that popping sound. Try peeling one to see it's okay. Leave it to cool, peel, then blend.

I blend soya beans and chickpea too and add to their pap and soups.

Doubledouble my groundnut paste stayed for one year. I sent my sis inlaw moni and she made one big bucket of it. We stored in the freezer and usually bring out some and put in the fridge. Yes it gets hard just like when you put butter inside fridge. The taste never changed till the last drop finished. That one used mostly for eating garden egg. So yours should last too.
Mine hasn't changed taste too. Did she blend yours with butter?? Mine doesn't get hard though and is always in the refrigerator. Pls can you find out if she made it with water. I will put in the freezer...onegai also advised me on that. Thanks mama

About the groundnut ish, i dont hv any experience abt it but i think refridgeratin wunt b a bad idea cos doing otherwise wil get d butter dried up.
I wil like to find out from u.
Did u have to soak d groundnut b4 blending? I ask because am thinkin d nut wil b hard on d blender.
I keep asking everyone to taste, smell et al everyday...I keep getting same answer of the taste n smell is still same as the first day...no changes in LOs...

I did not soak the groundnut. I had in the past just blended the groundnut in the dry mill into powder but it was never fully smooth n my los gag if they take an ungrounded grain (still on bottles). So I didn't set out to blend into paste...I did the normal roasting of the nuts with garri, cooled and blended. It is not hard on the blades.

I intend blending another batch in the dry mill, into a paste without water- a mama talked about it here. I will see if I can get it fully smooth. Let's try find out the feasibility of soaking the groundnuts with the pap grains. That would be the best hassle free method if it's possible.

When I had Baby E, I switched from Enfamil to Gerber formula. She drank it readily so I bought like 6 and packed it in my box and flew more down. At 5 months, I put a bottle in her mouth and she gave me a look that translated to "What is this sh*#?!". Na so the security's child enjoyed formula of N10,000 per can (my house in Heaven must be furnished with antique wood and silver for that blessing I passed on wink).
Feeding for them is always like that. We have chased her around the living room, begged, sang, ended up try in 3 different meals at mealtime. The more you stress, the harder the baby fights you. So even if it hard, DON'T STRESS IT! Always have his backup meal at hand. Right now, Baby E will throw rice out of her mouth if you give her with a spoon, then calmly sit on the carpet and feed herself every grain. As long it enters her mouth, I don't care how it entered! As for buying of formula, just do like my mum: every time we buy from her, she collects the payment 3 times over (something of N1000 can be paid for 3 times, paying N3000). That is her "retirement find fund from childhood".

I don't know about the groundnut paste, I'd be scared but can you freeze it?
Madame, you need to see how I bursted out in laughter...people around me must have wondered if they were safe. That your house antique wood must be superb...lol. I have really been looking forward to stopping serious purchase of similac but now the LOs are not cooperating. God help us!

Don't know about freezing groundnut paste...will wait for other mamas inputs and if not forthcoming, will re park myself.

Thank you for your prompt response...

Hello mamas!
I need opinions and advise. My kids have wasted all the cereal I bought. Not even half of Gerber cereal did they eat...after buying so much! I was of the school of thought that it's whatever you teach/introduce to them they will take after all, what do they know?? So I bought plenty but they've shown me they are the ones in control not me!

With my tail in between my legs, I listened to my sis and tried pap- after all my mouth on never giving babies pap...smh. Anyways, they take pap like PROS. My 1st problem is the groundnut powder I mix the pap with. If there's a tiny seed of groundnut my girl will gag n throw up. I now decided to blend with a lil water into paste n refrigerate. Is this okay?? How long can it keep?? Refrigerator is on 90% of the time. Is there any other way to incorporate the groundnut with the pap grains??

The other thing is my boy- still not eating much solids. The first few mins he will open his mouth and eat but loses interest after 4-5 tiny filled spoons. He will shut the mouth like those soldiers guarding Aso Rock. Thing is if you smear on his lips or by mistake get the food into his mouth, he will lick n eat ooo, but to open the mouth of his free will, that is like world war 3. How do I get him to eat better?? Feeding time with him does my head in. His food is still mainly formula, he weaned himself from breast milk at 8months. His weight is fantastic and his paediatrician, thinks am worrying over nothing...but she's not the one buying formulas...

Pls I need help before I run away...

Gud morning Mamas!
Plz where can one get ds fennel n basil oil. I really want a boosted breast milk dt I can even express for LO.

Will d ewedu be boiled without kaun (potash) n will it b mashed wif blender?
CC: All sabi Mamas
Fennel and basil oils can be gotten in good pharmaceutical stores...make sure it's the one you can use on the skin. I think Onegai has talked about where you can get it in the past. Take 3 drops and mix with pea sized cold pressed virgin coconut oil. Rub on the boobies avoiding the nipple and areola. Try this and come testify...I pray it works for u...I didn't lactate well at the beginning cos I had to use diuretics. So I really worked on lactating no be small. Pump regularly...even after feeding baby as this signals the brain that baby needs more milk. Take loads of warm fluid, water still remains the best.

Boiling fennel seeds like tea is also good and chew the boiled seeds too. If you don't mind piling on weight this helps too: raisins, dried fruits, currants et al. It's too sweet for my taste but ate it about 2ce n it was good, plus my sis in-law swears by it. Now another big one is REST. Might sound unbelievable, but give it a trial. Try sleep after feeding baby and see what your boobies feels like when you wake up. Milk production rate is highest during the sleep hours.

Pls don't beat yourself up, if you try all or feel too stressed n milk still not enough for baby. There's nothing wrong in trying formula...the most important thing is to feed our baby and have them faring well. Never feel or allow anyone make you feel guilty. Trying our best is all we can do.

So many things...but typing isn't my forte. Wish you the very best on this journey.

Good morning mamas as regards the breast milk flow issue i remembered in the pregnancy thread when someone mentioned fenugreek as one of the solutions to boost the flow. However when I Google it is found out online that local name for fenugreek is ewedu......please can our yoruba mamas or any other Maka help verify this claim if it's true or otherwise. Tnx
My bad...apologies. Checked it out after reading Onegai's response. It is wrong. I was told it was and it truly worked me. I ebfd my twins for 6 months. Heard about it from my lactation consultant. Thing is you have to drink about 750ml (ewedu) at a go- not easy. The fennel n basil oil worked for me too. First time I used it and went to the mall, I thought my boobies was going to burst!

Fenugreek is truly ewedu. If you can cook without neither salt nor locust beans n drink a bowl it definitely helps with breast milk flow. Fennel oil, basil oil are also good. Just mix 2-3 drops with a little coconut oil and rub round your breast avoiding the areola and nipple. Within 20mins, you will feel full.

One of my siblings laughed and told me that the Pampers Nigeria was made in Turkey, most likely in the same factory as the Pampers going out to Western countries. Which means they are deliberately giving us substandard goods. And most likely it is a Nigerian that allowed it. I believe her because when I tried to bring up the matter online, Pampers International was asking me to send an email to their Customer Service and discuss the matter whilst Pampers Nigeria was silent and instead posting pictures of their brand ambassadors.

We are the ones doing ourselves and we are the ones accepting it.

You should cloth diaper! You're already using cloth wipes. Do you know how pretty all our pics look not in disposables? cheesy and I'm not worried about the rising costs of diapers as Baby E gets older because it's the same diapers we have been using dor months. Plus, There is a new indigenous company coming into the market with Cloth Diapers and they are so good on product testing and using natural fibres and making suee their Quality is good and benefiting Nigeria. I already have their diaper wetbag and I like it.
I am so with your sibling on this too...I had a personal experience on something similar when I just went into medical supplies by the side...We are our very own enemies...like I tell a colleague of mine to be careful when praying and asking that her enemies fall down and die...be careful, u might just be the one falling down and .....after that prayer! The things we do to harm ourselves are just unimaginable...I pray we help ourselves out of the pit we've put us in!

I will try the cloth diapering and see if I can cope...though kids are now 1yr...

Below is Pampers Nigeria diaper. I was changing her and the inner drying materials (made of so many chemical substances) spilled out. It was always falling apart and that inner lining would touch her skin and she would itch till she bled. I checked online and asked mothers and so many people had the same issue. And Pampers Nigeria doesn't seem to care about quality control.
I totally get where you are coming from...we can't be taken seriously till we start taking ourselves seriously...saying things like: that's Naija for u, there's nothing we can do et al, mean we ain't serious about our issues...we have to help ourselves to get the needed assistance...kudos to your initiative on class actions...

I wish I could do cloth diapering...but me can't, lemme just respect myself and maintain on my lane...though have never used wipes on my babes even for a day...always been flannel and water with essential oils...hubby thinks am stressing myself cos at the end of the day I still use disposables after the whole natural wiping...but am cool with my baby steps...
Doff my cap to you all doing cloth diapering!

I use pampers baby dry PANTS and honestly, I give this brand of diapers 5 stars.
I discovered the baby dry PANTS range when my son was about 7 months old and I have stuck with it since then. It comes in sizes 4-6 but few days ago, I came across a size 3.
The review in the link below I think sums up all the good points about this range of diapers.
http://my-little-l..co.uk/2016/01/review-pampers-baby-dry-pants.html?m=1
I have also attached several pictures as its sometimes easy to have it mixed up with other diapers in the pampers baby dry range.
I wish pampers can do something about its other diapers especially the new born range. However, with this pampers baby dry PANTS, they've gotten it right !!
They are slightly more expensive than other diapers but it does keep baby dry for long. The 12 hours baby dry claim is true - especially over night. Another tip is to look out for when they are on offer (buy one get one free or multibuy offers), which is what I do and just buy many.
Thanks so much for this, God bless you loads for a detailed response.
My problem with this now is how do I know which size to buy...presently on size 4 swaddlers. If I buy a size too small there is no tabs to adjust...if too big- it won't be snug...

Pls I need your kind opinion...I use pampers swaddlers for my lil ones...it seems getting swaddlers in the UK is expensive than it goes for in the States. Hian! Oya go to Defcon 5: do yoi you have a maid or can Daddy be in charge of taking care of our little chicken pox patient and you isolate yourself and the baby? So your boy has to not be sleeping around the baby or you. Also not be playing. Then get bleach and be vigorous in cleaning every surface with a bleach solution. Is chicken pox a virus? We need Kaffy4bill on this to teach us hospital methods on keeping the place clean and uninfected.
Chicken pox is caused by a virus thus, there is no specific treatment for it. You can only manage the symptoms.

To keep from spreading, infected patient has to be isolated from people who don't have or have never had it. If you've had it in the past then you are immured to it and most likely can't contact it again- only seen one patient who had it 2ce. Clean all surfaces, utensils, beddings et al touched by infected patient with a sterilizing solution- chlorine, bleach et al. There should be no contact with infected patient till the infectious stage is over, this is when the last blister has opened up, fluid drained and crusted. Till then, just manage with paracetamol for pains/fever and calamine lotion or any cooling cream for the itch. Most importantly, keep away from pregnant women and babies.

Sorry about this. Send them back to Kidco, all of them, in the exact same condition in the same box, same number of books and get a refund. This is why he should have made it clear that they were gently used and not say "new" and tell us that our definition of new is different from his definition of new. You clearly cannot use as gifts. I believe Kidco assumed we all knew they weren't brand new (from his price). Which was wrong, he should have made it clear. We can still use the books but at least going forward, we all know what we are paying for.

For books in their mouth, I'd suggest wiping them down with an antibacterial wipe before giving them. Because to my reason, if we lived abroad we would use the Public Library System and those books would go through a lot of hands before it gets to us. So that is what I would do. However, this is Nigeria, with very rare public libraries.
Thank you mama...but you don't want to hear my full gist on this whole book thingy...my hubby n sis in law said same thing about the price ooo...but I didn't even think about it and just thought to add it to my party bags which was already done o! There is really nothing much you can do with chicken pox cos there is no specific treatment for it. All you can do is manage the pains/itch that comes with it. If there is pain give him paracetamol and calamine lotion to ease the itch.
It is highly infectious and my 1st line of thought will be protecting the little bae. Let him go stay with grandma or any relative till all blisters have crusted over. All will be well...

I have battled with myself for almost a week, asking if I should share this with mothers here (and maybe spoil his business) or be quiet about this incident. At the end of the day, I decided it was best I share my experience and allow everyone decide what they want to do with the information shared. That way I would have satisfied my conscience.
I was one of those that signified interest in the books Kidco is selling. When I saw that some mamas in Rofemigwa’s group talked about the books being out of their kids’ age range, I decided to address that issue by ordering for my kids separate from the Abuja groups’, this I did because my kids ages range from 6-2, as such they have different reading needs.
I contacted Kidco, told him specifically what I wanted and the age range I wanted the books to span across. First of all, I never knew the books were not brand new or had been gently used. It was until I got them that I knew, anyway that was not a problem as only one had a page missing.
I understand where you are coming from...I felt very bad when the books were delivered and it wasn't brand new. I contacted and told him it was not acceptable to me and explained to him the books were meant to be part of kids birthday party bags. There is no way I can give used books as souvenirs! He promised to replace with his new set which according to him is new. He said there was a mixup with that consignment. I came on here and said there were issues with the physical quality...I believe rofemiguwa, then said the books were not new but okay and no one complained- thus, assumed it was okay.
I got another set and lo, it wasn't new! I wasn't happy at all about this but for peace sake, and since other mamas were ok with it, I let go. The books definitely could not serve their purpose. I definitely, won't be patronizing him again. This doesn't mean it can serve a good purpose for other people, it is just a matter of one man's meat....
I will say this, don't even try the singing books if you are after physical quality. I can't use it for mine, cos books end up in their mouths- and I just can't imagine such in theirs- my personal thing. The pop up books were okay.
I left the books in Lagos- no point on heavy bags. So can donate to whoever wants and is in lag. My sis in law lives in Maryland.

Kidco also delivered my books today...sincerely, it was a good mix of books...found very few too advanced for kids the age group I asked for - but that they can read when a bit more grown up- so that's not bad at the end of the day...had a problem with the condition of some books but he's promised to rectify next week...also got 15 singing books all singing but for 3, which he told me about before hand...

Hello everyone. I'd like to ask a question please: how many of you have started reading to your children? What age did you start? Do you have a preference for a type of book (religious, cultural, early learning etc)? Do you know where to find books affordably? Do you think it's important to read to your child or do you hope the creche/daycare does it?
I'm asking because we keep addressing the physical well-being of our children but no-one mentions the mental well-being. And I think we rely a bit too much on teachers whom are (in all honestly) doing that job to cash a paycheck rather than because they want to give your kids the best knowledge.
Reading to your babies is very important. I started reading to my babies right from the womb and have continued till date. I started with babies bedtime prayer book when they were still in the womb. Now don't call me crazy, but I believe they recognize the reading from their wee days in the womb, just like they recognize my special song to them.

It is very important to read to the little ones as it helps build their interest, the coloured pictures also helps. It helps in building listening skills, it also helps their attention span and memory, et al...

I don't know where to get books at affordable price in Nigeria....is there even anywhere in this country to get anything at a good price?? Hmmm... On the type of books, I read the prayer book- religious-, fictional entertaining stories and I love showing them shapes in books. Reading to babies should not be left to the teachers alone, parents should endeavour to spend time reading and doing other little things with the kids. All the best though, with the books not ending up in their mouth!

@mam Doubledouble weldone ma...lesson noted bt hw do u apply d first aid pls cn u gv us a detailed explanation,thanks....d one i watched in d movies ias by hitting d back not forcefully ogrin
My dear, it was n is all God ooo...thanks. I would advice you watch a video of it. The summary is, lay baby on his stomach along your thigh, use your hand to support baby's head. Make sure baby's head is lower than the bum. Hit baby very firmly on the back between the shoulder blades. If baby is crying/ able to make sounds, then there's no need for this technique pls.

May our LOs live long to fulfil their destiny in God, in Jesus name, Amen.

You hit me, I hit right back, I won't tell you "i'll beat you <insert name here>, I go ahead & tap his/her butt. You bite me, I'm putting my teeth on your skin too... I'm all for "gentle" use of the rod!! I'm not sparing you unless you are less than 1!

I am not in obodo oyinbo, won't raise obodo oyinbo children!!cool[/quote]That is so my method already! Yes they are jus 6.5 months plus, but the earlier the better. Moreover, it's just tapping not beating, like I tell hubby. Refuse to have a children am scared of! Modath, howdy?? How LBK??

Hello everybody...
Have learnt a lot from this forum n have to share my testimony with all...
My babies clocked 6 months mar 16. Being exclusively breastfed was eager to introduce them to water and solids. Started off with puréed sweet potatoes n my boy accepted it a bit, but my girl shakara plenty.

On the 23rd Mar, whilst feeding them, my boy ate well. The sister was still spitting out the food, spoiling face n making sounds with her mouth that sounded like, yuck! So decided to put the food a lil bit from the tip of her tongue...next thing I knew she started spitting up frm mouth n nostrils...her face was red n I could see she was distressed. Took her out of her high chair fast n observed she was choking! I quickly maneuvered her n did the needful till she was ok, lil purée came out n she cried out. All the while, my nanny was trying to take her from me saying "let's pour water on her head"! A child is distressed so much she can't cry out....meaning sthg wrong with her breathing, n all she wanted to do was that!

When she was ok, I took her to a nearby children hospital as I was time with family. Next I knew the dr insisted on aspiration n antibiotics. When asked the reason, he gave me a bogus story of her vitals not being ok n all. At that point I introduced myself as a consultant and gave him a piece of my mind n took her to her pediatrician.

Please thank God with me for saving my girl. Pls baby tongue thrust was created by God, as anti-chocking mechanism. Do not try to override it. Don't force feed your baby, no matter how tempting it is. Every mother should learn basic first aid treatments, and all involved with your babies too. Imagine if it was just my nanny- though, I took her for first aid class o! Lastly, get a good pediatrician, and not one that just wants to load your babies with unnecessary drugs cos of money!

Do not say it can't happen to you...I am a dr n it sure happened to me. Pls learn from my own experience.

Funny thing is my twin boy was unusually calm all through...like he knew his sister was distressed! At the end of the day, I sat down n cried my eyes out.
