Ever since I read Andrea Levy's Small Island, all books that have come after regardless of the disparities in their subject matter have been measured against that book, my favourite for a few months now. Zadie Smith's White Teeth has the life of Immigrants like Levy's book as its theme. But where Levy's book is funny, with pages crackling with scenes of pure comedy, Smith's debut novel has a bit more depth, the characters a lot more varied as well as being socially and politically relevant in general. The friendship between a Bengali immigrant Iqbal and the mumbling Englishman Archie is at the centre of the book. Their friendship cemented in the Belgian woods durin World War II where they had been colleagues in the British Army. Separated for years, they would be reconciled again years later. They would both take young wives and the offsprings would come to play a pivotal part in the plot. Their reconciliation occurs in a much changed Britain. Infact, the book almost reads as the historical descent of Britain from Colonial heavyweight to aided winner in World War II to a modern nation, unsure of itself, liberal to the point of a farce, where appeasing immigrants or saving mice are worthy causes. Archie's young bride for example is the granddaughter of a buccaneering English sailor who had sailed to Jamaica, cutting a picture akin to Captain Jack, the Honorable Pirate of the Carribean. We are also briefly acquainted with condescending colonial Lords who in various instances give morsels of charity to their colonial vassals. It seemed like such great fun to be British back then. Fast forward a couple of generations, and the proud days of yore have given way to an Island nation with as much power as its geographical size. Our white British characters are Archie who tosses a coin before he makes an important decision in his life, or the uber-liberal family who are taken for a ride by Iqbal's twin offsprings. The Immigrants themselves do not fare any better. The crisis of Identity, the hankering for a homeland left behind all make them pitiful. Iqbal's life in London is so 'pathetic', the exploits of his great great grandfather in the previous century during an uprising that was ultimately crushed is his primary source of pride. Archie's brides mother, a Jamaican, lives in a dinghy South London flat, a Jehovah's Witness frantically waiting for the coming of Jesus. All rather a sad picture you might say. Well it is. I was laughing away, cause like Levy, Smith is also adept at creating comical scenes and absurd situtations with her characters. But I became more muted the deeper I got into the book. After all I am a Nigerian immigrant, living in a dinghy South London flat, every now and then I imagine myself in the cool Lagos breeze, with people that fully get my accent. Levy's book is still my favourite. The scenes in that book still haunt me from time to time, and I get all these weird looks from Londoners, probably wondering, who is this weird weird Assylum seeker laughing to his bloody self. |
I suspect Quieroz is a Brian Kidd clone. Good as an Assistant. . , . . . . .At best capable as the head honcho Look at the mess he made of Real when he was boss. |

I hardly keep abreast of baseball anymore sha. . . . But the baseball world has turned on its head. . . . .The Devil Rays leading Yankess and Red Sox Oh well. . . . .Baseball is one of the few democratic sports out there. As per Roger. . . . . .he reminds me of an old law professor of mine. His mantra was- - - - - - - - - -- -Deny Deny Deny. . . . . . .In fact deny your mother. |
Kitaun. . . .I agree with you sha These stills no dey complimentary at all. |
The Nadal Match in a nutshell. . . . Schuettler serving for the second set at 5-4. Nadal starts to slice the ball to mid court and Schuettler looks so uncomfortable handling the low ball. Loses his serve to 15. End of Match. |
Hmmm. . . .Personally I wouldn't recommend you going to Nigeria for Charity work. There are better places in Africa where your efforts will be met with more appreciation. Ghana is a lot more stable, as are Mali, Senegal etc. |
Rooney no be my fave person for the world. But as a footballer. . . . .I reckon he is still United's most important player. Tevez did well last season, seemingly making Rooney somewhat expendable, but it won't be the first time a player flames out in his second season. Whether by talent or by sheer will, Rooney can impose himself on any team and he is almost unstoppable. You only need remember the FA Cup match from two seasons ago when he was the only United player to show up. It is also not mere coincidence, all of the matches bar one United lost in the League last season, Rooney was absent. Don't sleep on this brother's talent oo, the English have a penchant for hyping up their players, but Rooney is all wheat. . , . .No chaff at all |
Davidylan touched on all the core issues. There are innate problems with Nigeria from a structural perspective. If Leadership at the top doesn't resolve the structural anomalies anytime soon, militant violence might spread to other parts of the Federation and not the Delta alone. |
Morenisex. . . . .e be like say u never live true to your name na why you get so much anger |
It must be scary for folks at the Emirates all the talk is about players leaving, and none about any coming. Whats going on with the Nasri Trade? If he is coming, me thinks they dropped a clanger. The premier young talent in France is Ben Arfa not Nasri (excluding Benzema of course) |

That is what parochial minded folks always bring up. Sales. . . . .Sales. . . . . . .Sales. Hannibal, you are a Pop Music fan, not a Hip Hop head. |
Davidylan, . . . . . The men's game of the 90's had a lot more depth o. Stefan Edberg was a player for the ages. Won the Australian, Wimbledon and US Jim Courier was also a multi grand slam winning player. Sergei Brugera dominated the French Open for a few seasons. The talent pool was deep. Bar Wimbledon which Sampras dominated, all the other slams dey rotate around numerous players Medvedev himself was not a one slam wonder. He had threatened such a performance for years but was an unfulfilled talent. The 90's was the ish. Moreso than even the Borg, Connors, Mcenroe era. |
Kai it was commonplace Maleeva Washington(I think that was his first name) got to the Wimbledon final against Richard Krajicek in 1996. And Wimbledon is the hardest surface to cause a surprise I bet you don't remember Dreyfus, some Belgian sha who got to the final against Sergei Brugrera at the French. Or Medevedev also, getting to within one set of the French Open against Agassi. Thomas Muster came from nowhere to win the French. I could go on and on. Shoot, I forgot to add Stefan Edberg, the best serve and volley man this side of Sampras. or the Steely Ivan Lendl. . . Even our own Duke Udozor was causing ripples way back. Maybe that was a bit of a stretch sha. His Wimbledon quater final was '85 The era was packed. Michael Chang got to finals though. . . .Just couldn't get over the hump. I remember he won that 'Grand Slam' tourney a few times as well. |
davidylan:hehehehehe. . . .Murray still try. Her second is as fast as Santoro' first serve |
@Davidylan I only just saw your diss of Michael Chang. Guy, you dey diss a whole Michael Chang I actually disagree with you the Sampras era was not competitive. Far from it. His era spanned the likes of Courier, the aforementioned Chang, Michael Stich, Boris Becker for a time, Ivanisevic, Agassi duh, Cedric Pioline, Thomas Muster, Kafelnikov, gosh. . . . . .the era was packed. Sampras was not a bad player. He had the game to justify being no 1 in the game for the time he did. But I would expect the greatest of all time, display a lot more dexterity. |
The only thing that has derailed the American game in recent seasons is the decline in shooting ability. The Vince Carter era of players valued jumping over a Seven Footer than shooting from beyond the arc. This team has been having trouble in International competitions since Sydney 2000, where they scraped into the final with a two point victory over the Lithuanian team. There seems to be an ongoing evolution in the NBA'S skillsl orientation. Shooters are almost as appreciated as athletic specimens. There is still a long way to go though. The way Dwight Howard was throwing bricks in the name of a hook shot might have convinced Hakeem he might have a chance to earn some more dollars. |
Well it was a case of 'Saved by the Serve'. Serena looked so uncomfortable playing the groundstrokes. She didn't play for the corners or down the line, all towards the centre and that Zheng was so good at finding angles. Well she is through sha. I hope we see more competition this time between the sisters. |
Look as Pompey dey cause rumpus within the United Camp. . . . . As soon as we acquire Crouchie. . .the first trophy in our cabinet for this season will be the Charity Shield |
The only thing wrong with Serena right now is her mind state. When she got broken in the Second set, you could see her get a grip of her game and break right back almost to love. She has too much power. Her Achilles heel has always been her forehand which breaks down from time to time, and it has shown at various times in the match. The Zheng babe is okay sha. . . .They should just feed her more EWA so she can grow taller ![]() |
The Wedding guests wey com chop awoof. |
The two ladies singles have been a procession so far. The quality match of the day is Schuettler v Clement. |
