i don't think the difference is that clear cut. Hausa music unlike malian music is not as popular, go to the hinterlands and watch, its almost the same style.

well i can't claim to have a deep knowledge of Hausa music. But I don't think hausa music emphases the Kora or Ngoni
as the Malians do. I have been trying to get my hands on any hausa music without much success unfortunately.

I suspect if there are similarities, it would likely be more with the Touaregs e'g Tinariwen.
