Yes Iwu failed us as a nation but then wld replacin him guarantee we won't be disapointed by d nxt person. Those askin 4 Soyinka, do we rily think dat he can giv us free nd fair elections, I don't think so he already has a deep seated hatred 4 d PDP which Iwu does not even have 4 oposition parties in d last elections.

In my opinion d process nd procedure in registerin nd votin in elections nd d manner @ which d results are anounced is more key dan who mans d comision.
If u regista in PH durin registrations can u vote in d elections if u find urself in Ibadan during d polls. If we say yes, what voters register wld be placed @ d pollin booths, if we say no, what happens 2 very mobile people eg University students, Corp membas nd ibo biz men who are in Lag dis wk nd may want 2 vote 4 their state govs durin elections.

Now wat do we use in identfyin people for registration, wld they bring their local govt identification or can any body just register with a name like Mike Tyson or Omoseyitan Omoyorun, what abt d role of thumbprints nd electronic votin, these are more critical dan who chairs d body.

The advantage we have @ dis time is dat our presidents both substantive nd actin are not do or die politicians like d immediate past president, so the chairman @ dis time has an advantage.

I am bloody exasperated.

Is that not why he is in charge.

Bloody hell, that is why he was appointed.

To confront all these problems and provide solutions
to them and not expect everyone to act like saints
and behave themselves.

Iwu when announcing the results in favour of Yaradua
practically denied there had been any problems during
the elections. It was left for the beneficiary of the elections
to admit things had gone horribly wrong.

The man is a blockhead. . . .People will be less inclined to cheat

Nope the success was because of concentration of resources which made security too tight for politicians  and security officers themselves and INEC staff to behave badly.

What it simply showed is that if we have a sane political climate INEC can only have one way to work which is to do the right thing and that includes INEC under Iwu.

At the end of the day. Lets allow Jonathan decide who he wants to conduct next years election. If he decides not to return Iwu to the office then fair enough that is his decision. But we must desist from lynching one man for the sins of 150million people.

For any campaign for 'Iwu is the problem' will attract a counter campaign of 'You are living in denial'
lol. . .so the ''lynching'' is what concerns you most.

Well my friend, this is the way of the world.

The people who took all that credit they were not
qualified for were as responsible for the credit crunch
as much as the heads of the global banks who lost their
jobs were.

Of course, it is the the Dick Fulds and Stan O'Neals of this
world who bear the brunt of the opprobrium from the same
complicit public.

The man needs no supporters. His strong headedness compounds
his incompetence. He should go jo.

I won't pretend to be an expert on such matters as electronic voting,
but it is to the credit of the electorate and the much maligned politicans
whom IWU has repeatedly berated that the Anambra elections worked to
the extent they did.

Any success was in spite of IWU and not because of him.

I will defer to you and agree perhaps e-voting would make things easier.

But one has to work with what one has and adjust appropriately when managing
an organisation.

Anambra wasn't the first time people had raised alarms over the electoral register.
In Ekiti too, spurious names were shown to be plentiful.

So why oh why did INEC not make the register available to all the parties and the public
long before the polling.

I do get your earlier point though. The reform of INEC does not end with the removal of IWU.
It must be accompanied by the appointment of electoral commissioners etc.

BUT IWU MUST GO.

The issue is not whether Maurice Iwu is Igbo or not.

The issue is we have just a couple of months to the elections which will be too critical for anybody to learn on the Job.

What I would do if I was Jonathan is to appoint more credible Nigerians as Electoral Commissioners to fill up the body of ECs. There should be about 13 but I think as we speak there are about 4 because Yar'adua has been too ill to do so all this while. With that you mandate them to deliver in 2011 and encourage more organisational decision making process as opposed to one-man-riot sqaud.

If after 2011 we are not satisfied we simply ease out Iwu and appoint a new chaiman from the body of ECs to carry on, just to encourage continuity and improvement.

All this Agbakoba, Anyaoku, Soyinka, bla bla bla. They all sound impressive. But how much can they do in the next few months? The system is more challenging than you think.

Jonathan can do what he likes. But let's just get real.
There is no denying the logistical challenges.

Some of us might have downplayed them
but crucially from what I can gather. . .so has IWU himself.

And that is the crux of the matter.

The Anambra elections put paid to this argument of the Politicians
being at fault.

Yes the politicians are as crooked as they come, but their job is made
easier by the organisation that umpires the elections.

IWU has run an organisation not fit for purpose and failed at its most
basic responsibility.

Whoever takes over the job hopefully will be honest about the challenges
so that people outside the organisation can help proffer solutions to the
problems they might face.

No more, one week to elections, we find a charade of a voter's register.

NO MORE.

Must we turn everything into tribalism or is it impossible to see things without tribal prisms?

That you suggest the bit in bold also betrays the possibility that you hold opposite view for the same reasons.

If you think people are supporting Iwu because of tribe you are simply telling us you malign him because of his tribe.

If you think people are only supporting him because they have been paid, you only tell us that those of you who oppse him are doing so because those who want his job have paid you too.

If you have the view that people can not hold a political view without being driven by sentiments or interests then you are simply betraying what drives your own thought process.

Let us agree that people can hold various views thats democracy.
Oh. . .they can hold views they want. I won't deny them that.
But for the likes of Ohakim and Dim Ojukwu to now be agitating
on behalf of Iwu just is a bit below the belt considering at various
times, they and their interests have been negatively affected by
the dismal performance of the organisation this man leads.
PoliticsRe: Iwu Explodes- Says Only Idiots Expect Miracle From Inec by doyin13(m): 5:01pm On Apr 08, 2010
Lol. . . .

Perhaps I should mention that I recognise many
of his critics, vocal as well as silent are also Igbo.

So it is not a tribal issue at all.

Besides, I have also held up as a model elsewhere
the performance of Professor Nwosu who is Igbo.

And I have no qualms with Olisa Agbakogba taking
the job, and he also happens to be Igbo.

But it has to be said, the biggest sponsor of this new
Pro-Iwu movement is the Imo state governor and the
proposition that seemed improbable not too long ago
has taken a life of its own.
PoliticsRe: Iwu Explodes- Says Only Idiots Expect Miracle From Inec by doyin13(m): 4:40pm On Apr 08, 2010
Honestly, I thought this was a done deal.

I thought it was the general consensus that
IWU IS INCOMPETENT.

How so quickly, this whole ''the environment is the problem''
or ''the politicians are the problem'' has gained currency
just baffles me.

And it is no surprise that many of his defenders have come
from the Igbo community out of some warped sense of tribal
loyalty.

For God's sake, even the Anambra elections where he beats his
chest disenfranchised a vast section of the voting public. And the
politicians by and large behaved themselves.

His incompetence is compounded by his befuddling obstinacy and
inability to admit he has got it wrong .

Perhaps if he did, he might have corrected some of the many things
they have got wrong over and over again.

Considering its secondary allocation for security
to augment the usual allocation to the forces from
the FG, it sounds good.

But there is still a whole lot more to be done, and the
whole 90 billion would probably be gulped in a jiffy by
the demands of security alone.

Sun of god:
Constant electricity within 12 months? I think we all need to get realistic.

If that's what we are expecting from Jonathan, then I think our expectations are too high.

Are we trying to Kill Jonathan as well?

If he can at the least get to the heart of the problems and then come up with a workable plan - assemble the required resources - and then communicate a programme within 6 months -  then he would have tried.

But he needs to bring in the right experts who do not have an agenda to assess the current situation. - and thats the biggest problem.

Any project in Nigeria that is for the public's benefit and involves public funds tends to cost 10 times as much.
I think it just shows the poor job the government has done explaining to the public whats on ground.

As PHCN stands now, it has up to 6000MW of capacity which is enough to satisfy most of the electricity
demand in the short term though I suspect it would be exhausted in no time at all.

All that is required to harness most of this power is gas generation which amnesty permitting
would be available in the not too distant future.

But add to this the ongoing NIPP projects that are at various stages of completion and then you
have some medium term demand coverage.

Of course there are also issues with transmission and distribution but the achievement of constant
electricity is not too farfetched.

Frankly I think Jonathan recognises this as well and wants to extract as much political leverage as
possible when constant power becomes a reality.
PoliticsRe: Jonathan To Keep Power Portfolio For Now by doyin13(m): 10:57pm On Apr 07, 2010
Me I think all the medium targets will be met. . .

From all indications, Naija has enough capacity to
satisfy short term needs so long as gas is provided.

Providing gas, completing the NIPP projects and reforming
NEPA are the main tasks ahead.
