Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the immediate release of dethroned Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi from confinement/detention. Justice Anwuli Chikere made the order in an ex-parte ruling on Friday morning after listening to lawyer to Sanusi, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN) who argued a motion ex-parte to that effect. The order, made interim, is directed at the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Director General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Attorney General of Kano State and the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) – who are all named as respondents in a fundamental rights enforcement suit filed on March 12, 2020, by Sanusi. Justice Chikere, in the ruling, said: “An interim order of this honourable court releasing the applicant from the detention and or confinement of the respondents and restoring the applicant’s rights to human dignity, personal liberty, freedom of association and movement in Nigeria, (apart from Kano State) pending the hearing and determination of the applicant’s originating summons.” The judge also granted the applicant leave to serve a copy of the release order and the processes in relation to the substantive suit on the respondents through substituted means. Justice Chikere allowed Sanusi to serve the defendants in the following manner: On the IGP, through any officer in his office at the police headquarters at Louis Edet House, Garki, Abuja; on the the the DG DSS, through any officer at the DSS headquarters at Aso Drive in Abuja; on the AG of Kano State, through any officer at the sate’s Ministry of Justice, Audu Bako Secretariat, Kano, and on the AGF, through any officer at the Federal Ministry of Justice in Abuja. Sanusi is, by the substantive suit, challenging his purported banishment to a community in Nasarawa State, arguing that such restriction violated his constitutionally guaranteed rights. British MP Nadine Dorries, a minister in the health department, has tested positive for coronavirus, she said in a statement on Tuesday, raising concerns about whether senior government figures have been infected. “I can confirm I have tested positive for coronavirus… and have been self-isolating at home,” said the Conservative MP. Health officials are now trying to trace where she contracted the virus and who she has been in contact with, she added. Six people have died in Britain from the virus, with more than 370 confirmed cases. Dorries, who helped craft the legislation to fight the bug, is the first British politician to be diagnosed with COVID-19. The Times reported that she had been in touch with hundreds of people, including Prime Minister Boris Johnson. She fell unwell on Friday while signing the document that declared coronavirus a notifiable disease, meaning companies could obtain insurance cover, said the paper, adding she was now believed to be on the road to recovery. “I would like to thank… the wonderful NHS staff who have provided me with advice and support,” she said, referring to Britain’s National Health Service. The shock news is likely to increase calls to suspend parliament, despite the government’s reluctance to do so in the middle of a health crisis. Her boss Matt Hancock, who is leading Britain’s response, tweeted that he was “sorry to hear Nadine has tested positive for coronavirus. “She has done the right thing by self isolating at home, and both NHS and PHE staff have been brilliant. We all wish her well as she recovers,” he added. PHE refers to Public Health England “We will do all we can to keep people safe, based on the best possible science.” Finance minister Rishi Sunak will on Wednesday unveil the government’s first post-Brexit budget, with all eyes on emergency government measures to ease the economic pain from the coronavirus outbreak. He is expected to give the state-run National Health Service whatever it needs to help combat the virus and promise temporary support for businesses hit by cash flow issues. The Bank of England’s incoming chief Andrew Bailey last week said UK-based companies would need help in the face of disruption to supplies caused by the virus. Budget airlines Ryanair and EasyJet said they will cancel all Italian flights until early April after the government ordered the entire country locked down because of the virus, leaving thousands of people unable to return home. Residents of Owode Quarters in Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State, were stunned on Wednesday when an apprentice, Peter David, was caught making love to a pregnant goat at an uncompleted building in the neighbourhood. David, who claimed to be an indigene of Benue State, was caught in the act following the bleating of the goat which drew the attention of some residents and officials of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company on duty at the quarters that morning. The residents said the goat was helpless for about two hours after the incident as it foamed in the mouth and bleed in the private parts. Police later arrived at the scene and took away the man and the goat. A resident, Mrs Oluwasola Ayodele, said the BEDC officials drew her attention to the incident while she, in turn, called others to witness the act she described as an abomination. Ayodele said she called for assistance when the man wanted to escape through River Ofin to Ifeoluwa Community, but one Pastor Gbenga Ajulo caught him. Ajulo, who is the minister in charge of Christ Apostolic Church, Throne of Mercy, Owode, said he was praying in the church when he heard the goat’s continuous bleating. “About seven minutes later, I heard somebody calling my name and shouting for help. I came out and saw the man trying to escape and I caught him. “When we sat him down, we asked him what happened and he confessed that he was having sex with the goat. For about two hours, the goat was foaming in the mouth and bleeding in the private parts. “This is a bad omen. It is evil. I suspect the act is for ritual. There is the need for cleansing. Beyond, all these strange diseases in society are from acts like this. He would have contracted diseases from having carnal knowledge of the goat,” the cleric said. The chairman of the neighbouring Ifeoluwa Community, Mr Abel Bankole, who described the occurrence as ‘strange,’ said there should be medical examination of the young man. “He would have contracted diseases from such act. Something has to be done so that he does not infect others through sexual intercourse,” he added. The police spokesman for Ekiti State Command, Sunday Abutu, who confirmed the incident, said, “Men of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad Department arrested a man that was sleeping with goat in the neighbourhood. “He was interrogated and he confessed that he engaged in the act. He further said he had been doing such before he came from Ondo State. We are still interrogating him for more information as to why he is doing such. He will possibly be charged.” The punch newspaper
