elninosanz: I don't usually comment on Nairaland, but for the sake of clarity, i believe i will. I am a self-employed software developer, but i also driver on Uber to make extra money. After reading both stories and watching the video that was posted, here is what i believe happened
1. The lady made a request on Taxify and the guy came to pick her before asking for her destination and if she was paying cash. This was his first mistake. It is his prerogative to ask for her destination especially at that time of the night(There are areas i would not go to in Lagos at 12midnight). It is also his prerogative to ask if it was a card or cash trip(Due to the fact that Uber and Taxify do not credit your account immediately for card trips, some drivers prefer cash trips especially when they are in desperate need of cash and can't wait until the following week when they will be credited). It should be noted that Uber/Taxify frown on this practice, but we should grant drivers some leeway here. Nigeria is not easy. Now like i said earlier, he should have called her and asked these questions BEFORE driving to her destination. If her responses where fine with him then go to her pick up point and pick her. If her responses where not fine with him, he should have cancelled the trip and wait for someone else to request.
2. On getting to her location, he realised that her terms where not favourable to him, so he asked her to come down and she refused. Now we get to the crux of the matter. One of 2 things could have happened. The driver could have waited for her new ride to come(By the way, i don't believe her that the driver was 2 mins away. At that time of the night on a weekday in Jakande, drivers are not always 2 mins away. My guess would be about 10 mins). I don't think 10 mins was too much time to wait for a ride for a rider since you where the one that rejected the request. On the other hand, when the guy refused to wait, she could have come down and waited for the next driver since she was in front of her house and the driver was only 2 minutes away.
3. Recall that the driver said he lived not too far away from her pick up point. Once she refused to come down, he got angry and decided to go home with her still in the car. I am sure in his mind he was trying to teach her a lesson(which was wrong). It was in front of his house that all the drama happened
4. He went to open the gate of his house, the lady seized his key. In his attempt to wrest his keys away from her, he man-handled her and she in turn pepper-sprayed him.
The guy was obviously at fault for driving her to an unknown location at that time of the night. However, one can not completely exonerate the lady. she could have come down from the car when he went to open the gate, request for another ride and reported the case to Taxify later. Also, this is not a rape case of that i believe we are all sure. She just termed it rape to grab attention to the case.
Lesson learnt for me is this. We should learn to discomfort ourselves sometimes for the sake of peace. If the Driver had discomforted himself by waiting her her next ride, all this would not have happened. Same also for the lady. God help us all. This is exactly what happened |

[s]Like Biafra Like Catalan - By Richard Murphy
I was taken aback by images screening on BBC News of riot police smashing a glass door to gain access into one of the venues being used for the referendum by Catalan separatists in Spain. The harsh clamp down on the exercise is no doubt a reaction to the Spanish government describing the referendum, which Catalonians hope to use to declare independence, as illegal.
If video clips of the riot police smashing doors were jolting, the scenes on the streets were even more shocking. Security forces deployed maximum force in repressing protesters in a manner that made the combined approach of Nigeria’s military and security forces appear like the disposition of crèche staffers. Those that opposed the police efforts to stop the referendum were clobbered, hurled to the ground and peppered with rubber bullets.
To achieve the ultimate objective of these actions, the police were reported to have carted the ballot away, effectively raising questions about the integrity of any outcome announced for the referendum. This tallies with Spain’s desire to stick to the current arrangement where its constitution does not recognise secession rights for Catalonia, a wealthy region of 7.5 million people in north-eastern Spain.
The clamp down on the “illegal” referendum came at a time when a vocal minority from south-east Nigeria are, like broken records, chanting “referendum or death” or “no referendum no election” in their misplaced quest to revive a defunct republic of Biafra, the cause of a civil war five decades ago. In recent months the rabble agitating for the breakup of Nigeria has fallen under the control of Indigenous People of Biafra, IPoB, now officially designated as a terror group.
IPoB of course hinges its ridiculous for a referendum, not recognized by any Nigerian law, on some nebulous international instruments, the relevant sections or specific documents have never been cited. Its propaganda includes inviting the European Union, United Kingdom and United States to meddle in Nigeria’s internal affairs.
Interestingly, Spain is a visible member nation of the EU. The EU has maintained a stoic silence even when Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont has repeatedly appealed to the EU to intervene. The bloc’s position is that Catalan’s breakaway bid and Spain’s tough stance against it are internal affairs of that country, in which it would not interfere. United Kingdom has also been decadently silent while US President Donald Trump was categorical in declaring that his country is opposed to Catalan’s independence bid, which he described as “foolish”.
One is therefore at a loss as to why even those who lay claim to a sophisticated level of education from the south-east of Nigeria are counting on these same countries and the EU to help achieve in Nigeria what they are opposed to in Spain. It is confounding that Nigeria’s pro-separatist rabble does not see themselves as willingly handing their country over for re-colonization by their very demand for intervention from people who are loathe accepting what is being requested for their own selves.
More instructive is that the Catalonians have not threatened war crime charges at the International Criminal Court against the riot police that have violently disrupted their referendum the same way IPoB and other Biafra separatist groups always threaten the Nigerian Army and the police. The Catalonians definitely know the remit and limits of international organizations.
Even though Catalan has its distinct language, culture and economy within its geographical space in Spain it has not misled its pro-independence followers with lies that they are “indigenous people” with special rights that make attacking troops commonplace.
Nigerian military and security agencies should catch up with what has happened and continues to happen in Spain over the Catalan issue and take cue on how not to be intimidated by the blackmail of international bodies. It is to the credit of the military that on the day Catalonians are getting beaten and shot at for holding a referendum, Nigerians that truly believe in the country proudly decked themselves in the green-white-green national colours to celebrate Nigeria’s 57th independence anniversary. The military should help keep it so by dealing with any threat – internal or external – that seeks to undermine the integrity of Nigeria. This is still our country.

Afam4eva: This is in direct response to the assertion by an Igbo man and Lagos lawmaker, Mr Jude Idimogu where he posted that It is too late for the Igbos too pull out of Nigeria. You can find the article here https://www.nairaland.com/4074609/jude-idimogu-too-late-igbo
Before i make my point, it's imperative that i make it known that i'm neither for the breakup of Nigeria nor necessarily for One Nigeria. I think at this moment, i'll swing to wherever the pendulum takes me. I'm saying this because a lot of trolls will leave my message and start casting aspersions on my character. Not that i care anyways.
Now, i have nothing against the distinguished senator (I assume that he is), neither i'm i at variance with the nitty-gritty of his point of view. M only grouse is that he's using those views to make a very general statement about the well being or well without of the Igbo people.
Yes, it is true that Igbos are scattered all over Nigeria, probably more than any other ethnic group. It's also not surprising that Igbos have the largest investments of any group outside it's transient natural habitat. That is why people like the lawmaker can rise to become a lawmaker in a cosmopolitan state like Lagos.
Having said all this, i think it's important that people separate the call for secession or self determination by a lot of Igbos from the economic, social or even political life of Igbos in any part of the world. People have gone ahead to give very absurd reasons why Igbos cannot have a country of the own and i will attempt to state and squash some of this tomfoolery.
Igbos are not united This music has definitely been released since after independence. It is a song that non Igbo Nigerians have sang to the point that even some Igbos have started enjoying the tune and they join in the folly of hasty lack of common sense and reality. Igbos are not united but rightly or wrongly, they came together to fight the federal government from 1967 to 1970. We hate each other but even after all the destruction in Igboland and lack of federal help, we still managed to pick ourselves up and cleaned our cities to what it is now. It may not be the best out there, nut it's impressive for people who had to start from ground zero.
Even if this assertion of Igbos not being united were true, i don't think it's the business of anybody whether we're going to kill each other in Biafra or not. It's our decision and we don't need the input of anyone that isn't going to be part of the supposed country.
Igbos are spread all over Nigeria This is another laughable rhetoric that we hear all the time. So, what if there are 20 million Igbos outside Igboland? Arent there Igbos in Ghana, Benin, Togo, China, Malaysia, Brasil, the US and UK? Is there really a need for all Igbos to be in Igboland? Even if they are forced back after the separation, what baring does that have on the topic of discourse.
Igbos own businesses throughout Nigeria Igbos also own businesses in the countries i mentioned in the previous point. Don't Ghanians own businesses in Nigeria and vice versa? I think this statement is usually more of a threat than a show of concern. What a lot of people who make these statements are saying is that "If you get Biafra, forget about all your properties in Nigeria". This won't be news to a lot of Igbos who experienced the civil war.
Igboland is too small to contain Igbos This one just made me chuckle just a little bit. It's funny that a state like Lagos contains about 20 million people despite being the smallest in the country but these same people think that a region that is probably 7 times the size of lagos will not contain, at most 50 million people.
Where will people married to Igbos fit in I think this is the most silly of them all. Anybody who is married to an Igbo person or is an Igbo person married to a non Igbo Nigeria and asks this kind of question, that person should never have gotten married in the first place. While some people marry for love, others want us to believe that they married for other senseless reasons such as the guaranty that they and their spouse will be from the same country.
Having said all this, i think i have to point out that everyone has the right to their opinions just like i have the right to my opinion about their opinions if i find any of them in bad taste.
God Bless Nigeria God bless you for this write up,Afamefuna. |
