Last week, Mike Petrosino, a 21-year-old who was recently diagnosed with terminal cancer, was given a chance to say goodbye to his dog, Rusty, who was brought to Massachusetts General Hospital for a final visit. Not surprisingly, the heartbreaking photo of the moment — shared by Petrosino's family members — has gone viral since a friend posted it to Reddit . “My friend Mike was diagnosed with cancer in the 8th grade," the friend explained on Saturday . "He was given a 3% chance to survive the first year. Two days ago we found out that after 8 years, the amputation of his leg, and four rounds of cancer that there’s now nothing that they can do. This picture was taken by his brother yesterday." “Rusty was very emotional when Mike said his finale goodbye,” John Petrosino, Mike's brother, told The Blaze . “Every time I come home these past two days, he sits near Mike’s favorite couch and whines, which is rare from him.” An online fund to help pay Petrosino's medical bills has raised more than $7,600 . "I just got back from Mass General and got to say goodbye with a bunch of old friends,” the friend added. “He’s the bravest guy I’ve ever met and all he did the entire day was make sure everyone else was okay.” http://news.yahoo.com/dying-man-dog-photo-141447361.html

BENIN—NO fewer than 836 teachers have been sacked by Edo State Government, sequel to the outcome of the verification exercise carried out by the state’s Department of Information and Communication Technology. Vanguard gathered that the affected teachers learnt of their sack when they discovered that their names were missing from the December salary voucher. It was learnt that some of those sacked were allegedly found to have either over-stayed, mentally unstable, physically blind or have falsified their ages and credentials. A man who gave his name simply as Osahon, said his wife was affected just as it was further gathered that over 96 of those sacked were alleged to be from a particular local government in Edo North. Osahon, however, appealed to the state government to reconsider its stand on the sacked teachers, especially those who are still young in service. His words: “I don’t have a steady job. My wife is the one taking care of the home. She is not up to three years in service and less than 35 years old. The governor should give the young ones a second chance. They should regularise their ages.” Commissioner for Basic Education, Mr. Patrick Aguinede, who confirmed the sack, said those affected were certified by the ICT after the screening He said those who have over-stayed in service gave a scenario that the state government could not recruit new teachers. According to him, “the teachers were found to have served beyond 35 years. Some were physically blind, some manipulated their results and age which later showed they finished school before they were born.” State secretary of Nigeria Union of Teachers, Mr. Akin Adeojo, said the union became aware of the sack through rumours, but added that the affected teachers had not been issued sack letters. He said the NUT would scrutinise the letters before taking a decision, adding that it would make a case for anybody found to have been victimised. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/12/edo-govt-sacks-836-teachers/ |
To stem the tide of collapsed buildings in the state, Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State has revealed that 429 buildings were shut while eight others were demolished across the state, western Nigeria. Fashola spoke at the 2,400 days celebration of his administration in office, held in the three senatorial districts of the state on Monday. In Agege, the governor said the buildings were shut for not meeting up with the physical planning laws and standard. He disclosed that 838 buildings were also pasted with stop work notice in the last 100 days. According to Fashola, who was represented by the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Ade Ipaye, 110 cases were listed for prosecution by the Lagos State Building Control Agency for various offences, including building insurance/general contractor’s all risk, out of which 49 of such cases were decided while 45 cases were still pending. “During the period under review, 622 applications for building approvals were received. Out of these, 490 were approved for residential, 58 for commercial, 7 for institutional, 18 for renovation and 46 for demolition permit. “Five collapsed buildings were recorded as a result of fire incidence while one collapsed as a result of sub-standard materials used,” he disclosed. He said the Ministry of Science and Technology has, in the last 100 days, expanded the scope of the state’s Control and Command Centre to accommodate more calls from citizens in distress or needing emergency attention from any part of the state. The commissioner explained that the Control and Command Centre was the place where the 211, 767 free toll calls were received and acted upon. On those making frivolous calls, Fashola advised such people to desist from the act, pointing out that by making such calls, they delayed others who needed to make emergency calls. “The lines are made strictly for emergency purposes; when there is fire, motor accidents or crime, that is the time to call,” he added. On the Lagos State Home Ownership Scheme (Lagos HOMS), the governor disclosed that allocation of houses to beneficiaries on mortgage basis would begin in January, 2014. The governor, who was represented by the Commissioner for Housing, Mr. Bosun Jeje, at the Teslim Balogun Stadium venue of the Lagos Central Senatorial District session of the event, said over 5,000 houses were now ready for allocation under the scheme, adding that there were many other housing estates still under construction across the state. Fashola said he recently approved another housing estate in Ilubirin that would contain 1,259 housing units and another one at Ibeshe in Ikorodu Local Government Area. He noted that with the frequency by which the estates came up, it would not be easy to put a permanent figure on the number of houses that would be ready before the take off of the scheme, but added, “the houses are not limited but we have them coming up every day. “One of the campaign promises that we made at that time was that we would address the problem of housing in Lagos State. We knew it was a challenge and we promised that we would address it and we have started addressing it.” Giving reasons for the delay in the kickoff of the allocation, Fashola explained: “In actual fact, the allocation was meant to start this December but we are trying to have a sustainable programme, that is why it has not started. We want to make sure that everything that needs to be done must be done before we start the allocations.” http://pmnewsnigeria.com/2013/12/24/lagos-shuts-429-houses/#respond |

The pilot of a Mozambican airliner that crashed in Namibia last month deliberately brought the plane down, aviation experts in Mozambique believe. Mozambican Airlines flight TM470 left the capital Maputo bound for Angola on 29 November, but crashed, killing all 33 people all board. The Civil Aviation Institute said the pilot made a "deliberate series of manoeuvres" causing the crash. The pilot's motives are unknown, and the investigation is continuing. 'Clear intention' The plane went down in heavy rain in Namibia's Bwabwata National Park. There was a 'clear intention' to crash, investigators say But the head of the Civil Aviation Institute, Joao Abreu, told a news conference that the pilot, Hermino dos Santos Fernandes, had a "clear intention" to crash. Dos Santos Fernandes locked himself in the cockpit, and did not allow his co-pilot back inside until moments before the plane hit the ground, Mr Abreu said. "During these actions you can hear low and high- intensity alarm signals and repeated beating against the door with demands to come into the cockpit," he was quoted as saying by state news agency AIM. "The reasons which may have given rise to this behaviour are unknown." Investigations also showed that Dos Santos Fernandes manually changed the aircraft's altitude three times from 11,500 metres (38,000 feet) to 180 metres (592 feet) - below ground level. He also manually altered the aircraft's speed. Earlier this week, Namibian investigators said they had detected "no mechanical malfunction" that could have led to the crash, and the plane was one of the newest in the airline's fleet. The 33 people who died included passengers from Mozambique, Angola, Portugal, Brazil, France and China. Mozambican Airlines is currently banned from airspace in the European Union, along with all other carriers certified in Mozambique, because of safety concerns. http://m.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-25482083 |

Shine It: He's gradually destroying what he spent years building. Very soon only APC supporters would be using nairaland forum.my bro if u are not satisfy with d way seun put topics on d frontpage you can as wel create your own forum/blog and filled d entire frontage with anti-APC to ur satisfaction. Did the other thread of GEJ not contesting in 2015 hit the frontpage immediately after it was created ? I guess NO. With d little time i have spent on NL i have cme to realise dat its only genuine breaking news that hit the frontage with d speed of light not yeye topics like ds of anti-gej/anti-buhari/anti-tinubu . So bro i hope u get my point. My bro u can also read ds Seun comment to satisfy, but if u are not still satisfy , then i guess their is serious problem Seun: I get more traffic by catering to supporters of all parties instead of catering only to supporters of one party. Besides, I voted for GEJ in the last election and though I want him to step down for someone less corrupt, I will still vote for GEJ over and over again if GMB is the alternative. |
