Car Talk / Things You Need To Know About Toyota by Drsheddy(m): 10:36am On Jul 05, 2016
Many people own Toyota and there’s a good reason for that. People don’t just buy something in numbers if it isn’t good. Toyota’s are affordable and efficient. To help you appreciate these Japanese vehicles a bit more, I did a quick research on some unknown facts about Toyota. You might know everything about the functionality of your Toyota but you probably didn’t know these other things about the global brand. .

1.The Toyota Group doesn’t just manufacture cars only. The company is huge in the textile machinery business as well. The two main types of textile machinery manufactured by the Toyota group are the spinning machinery and weaving machinery

2. Toyotas have such a long road-life that eighty percent of Toyota sold 20 years ago are still on the road today. That kind of longevity in automobiles is quite amazing. Also, according to multiple market researches, Toyota has the best resale value. Second hand Toyota units sell as quickly as French fries during lunchtime.

3. The founder of Toyota Motor Corporation was actually called Toyoda with a ‘D’, not Toyota. The name was changed to Toyota because when written in Katakana (a Japanese script), the word Toyota only takes 8 strokes to write, unlike Toyoda which takes 9. Well, 8 is considered a lucky number in Japanese culture. Everyone wants to be associated with it on one way or the other, hence the reason for the change.

4. Toyota cars came about as a result of Japan’s war with China in the 1920s. Japan needed to start producing vehicles to aid citizens in moving from war torn areas so Kilichiro Toyoda, the founder, travelled to the US in 1929 to learn about automobile production. He came back with great ideas inspired by the Chevrolet and Dodge vehicles. His newly found knowledge then aided in the building of the very first Toyota vehicles.

5. As of 2015, Toyota is the world’s largest car manufacturer, selling over 11 million vehicles annually. Toyota has business operations in a whopping 170 countries. Add this to the fact that the company currently holds the highest number of global patents – 1000 to be exact, and you have a winner. Meaning 1000 new Toyota models are coming in the future. Who can compete with that?

6. Back in the 1950s, the company almost collapsed. It was saved by the Korean War. The company produced only 300 vehicles in mid 1950s as it was on the verge of bankruptcy. But as when the Korean War started, the US was in urgent need of vehicles. So it ordered around 5000 vehicles from Toyota. Consequently, the company was revived from the huge government paycheck. Talk of being rescued from the brink of failure. Well, there aren’t many good things that come out of war but this was one of the few ones.

7. Despite competition from the likes of Tesla, Toyota is the world’s leading manufacturer of Hybrid vehicles. It is estimated that there are over 3 million hybrid Toyota vehicles on the road right now. The Toyota Prius is the most popular hybrid vehicle

Crime / Shocking! Hot Zoo Keeper Accused Of Impregnating A Female Orangutan Ape by Drsheddy(m): 9:58am On Jul 05, 2016
A zoo keeper at Indonesia’s Surabaya zoo has landed in trouble after he was arrested and charged with impregnating a female orangutan, reports the Kalimantan Press.
The 38-year-old zoo keeper was filmed in full action by a series of hidden cameras put in place by the zoo’s security officials after doubts emerged about the man’s devious actions towards the zoo animals. He was caught on camera having sexual intercourse with the animals.
“Some animals seemed sexually aroused when it was time to feed them” explains Akhiroel Yahya, employee of the zoo for 14 years. “But what made us most suspicious was when we discovered Marylin, our oldest orangutan, was pregnant. She has never been in contact with any other orangutans because of her aggressive nature, so it didn’t make any sense” he acknowledges, visibly troubled by the news.
Then out of curiosity and desire to know, the zoo officials decided on what to do.
“At first, we clearly did not comprehend what had happened,” admits the zoo’s director, Abdoel Hakim. “Marilyn has been secluded for the past 10 years, it was a total mystery,” he acknowledges. “It is only when we placed several hidden cameras that we learned the horrible truth” he admits, visibly angered by the whole situation.
However, the zoo keeper had denied everything. He denied any wrong doing on his part.
“He said everything he had done was consensual,” explains police chief Abubakar Jaar. “He said he loved each and everyone of the animals and was very sorry he had impregnated the orangutan,” he told local reporters. “He says he did not know orangutans could get pregnant from humans,” he added.
“Contrary to popular belief, the orangutan species is much closer to the human species than chimpanzees. We share practically the same DNA code, with only minute differences, which could explain the orangutan falling pregnant from this man” explains Paleobiologist Bachtiar Pado Panghulu, of the University of Jakarta.

“Particularly in Indonesia, the genetic profile of some of the population is extremely close to the orangutan species, leading us to believe they’re might have been a common ancestor to both species only a few hundred thousand years ago,” he admits.

Education / Emily Alemika: First Female Professor Of Law From Kogi State by Drsheddy(m): 6:40pm On Jul 04, 2016
That Professor Emily Alemika of the Department of Public Law, Faculty of Law, University of Jos (UNIJOS), is the first female law professor to have come out of the entire Kogi State is an act of fate. A victim of child labour who registered for primary education at 13, she was undaunted in her drive to the top. Little wonder she is an apostle of encouragement, not only to women, but all she comes across.

Prof Emily is the wife of Professor Etanibi Alemika, also of UNIJOS. Emily gives all credit to her husband.

Being the first female professor of law in the whole of Kogi State
I did not know I was the first in my state until I started receiving congratulatory messages. In fact, it was my senior colleague that drew my attention to it and I told him I have not thought of that because I did not set a pace for myself to be there before any other person. But in all, I thank God for the grace because that also includes the old Kwara State from which Kogi was carved out.

This position was further confirmed at the recent conference in Afe Babalola University. So, we are not just making the statement, it is a fact. At least, we are sure of the whole Kogi State and I come from a community called Kabba Bunu where also I was known for my struggle and determination to become somebody.

How background impacted her career
My background was very interesting. You can imagine starting primary school between the ages of 13 and 14 years. Before primary school, I had stayed with more than 12 people but none of them sent me to school. All I was known for was the fact that I was hardworking and very good at helping people. So, I was always asked to help either an aged person or a young woman giving birth or someone that has business to do and felt I would be of help.

Coming from a broken home, it was difficult to have a feel of what happened. So, those times I was being taken from one home to another, I never had the privilege of knowing my mother or father. I was dashing from the hands of relatives to the friends of relatives but wherever I was taken, I did my best diligently. There was never a time I knew myself to be a child. I was doing things like adults; walking distances, quickly taking a tin of oil to the market before rushing to the farm. If I have to tell you how my background impacted me, I will tell you that it made me rugged.

Late enrollment in school
Talking about my primary education, I can tell you that all hope was lost until 1968 in Lokoja when I was in the 12th home and coincidentally, the last place I was taken to. I was there as a local restaurant attendant and I was receiving six pence per month. One day, the lady said my father wanted me back so I could enroll in school but I refused because whenever they did that, it meant they wanted to give me to another hand. So, I pleaded with the woman not to allow me leave her because that was the only place I was treated like a human being and also had the privilege to earn income.

I told her I would rather die with her. Once she agreed, I was happy and went about to hawk pounded yam but after few days, she said, ‘Look, you have to go back to the village because your father has threatened to arrest me with police if I do not send you back.’ I went back December of that year. That was the time I started being able to pick years and I knew that it was in 1968. Eventually, January 1969 came and I was enrolled in Primary One. Within these years, I had moved round the 33 Bunu villages, serving people. But one thing on my mind was that I wanted to go back to school. So, in the farm, I would be marching to the tune of school drum’s beat.

Journey to the top
As I have been saying, there was a spirit in me – the spirit of determination, the spirit of ‘I can do it’ and the spirit of ‘what you are assigned to do, do it to the best of your knowledge.’ Even though I was the fourth in my family, I was the only one that was able to scale the hurdle. It was tough though, but I was not looking back. I kept moving along, trying to fit in with those younger schoolmates. I never knew where my mother was and I never lived with my father.

It was not as if there was anybody around to encourage me. It was a hopeless situation. Even the day I saw my mother, they just called me and said ‘that is your mother’ and before I knew, they asked me what I was still doing there with her and that was all, she disappeared again. So, I continued with my life the way I found it. Any stage I got to was where God wanted me to be. In my trying to know how to read and write, I excelled.

It was my performances rather than my career choices that were taking me to the next level. For instance, at the end of my primary education, I was among the best three. Aside the Common Entrance examination held in my locality, I was taken to Lokoja for another interview and that was how I got admission into a secondary school.

When I finished secondary school, I chose to go to Teachers’ Training College because it was free. I was moving towards teaching but because I love people, I wanted instead to go into nursing. It was at that point that my husband came into my life. I was the talk of the entire village because of my academic performances and he changed my idea of becoming a nurse.

It was not as if I sat down to choose Law. I read Law by default and also in my husband’s house. That is the reason I tell people that it is God first and my husband second. If he tells me to put my hand in fire, I am not going to think whether it will burn me. I will rather obey him first. He has been my guardian angel. Our marriage was very new when I gained admission to study diploma in Law at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. When I was through with the programme, I went to join him in the United States. When I got there, he bought form for me to do Masters in Criminal Justice. I could not understand how he expected me to do Masters with Diploma in Law but he encouraged me by reminding me that I was brilliant enough to do it. Behold, by the time I was through with the first stage, I passed very well and I continued till I finished it.

When we returned to Nigeria, he worked hard to see that I was enlisted for National Youth Service Corps. Again, he came back to tell me that it would be nice if I go for Law so I could practice. I earlier told him I was tired but he pressed on and I accepted. That was how I came to read Law.

Why women are unable to able to break even in politics
It is still the problem of men. I wish everybody will be like my husband who sees women first as human beings before thinking of gender. If all men should see women as human beings first, the world will be a better place for all. There is the fear of insecurity in men that sometimes make them hinder women from aspiring in some areas of their lives.

There are all sorts of unfounded fears that are not originally there. But as women, we should also allay men’s fears because sometimes, they are acting out of past experience – there were few women that God used men to bless who took advantage of the men and at times, bolt out of the union, stubborn or uncontrollable.

Addressing broken marriages and impact on female children
I will say that it is going to be very difficult curbing the wave of broken marriages in our society. Traditionally, before a woman abandons her home and children, it would have been a matter of life and death, a situation where people advise her to either run away so that she can live to see her children in future, or stay in the marriage and die. So, you discover the matter was less in the past but with pragmatism of the society, education and other issues, I do not see the problem of broken homes reducing. It will rather be on the increase.

There are so many factors or parameters now than before that are responsible for broken homes the greatest of which is the economy. Women are out seeking ways of keeping the family together but the man has given up. Yet, he is still at the helm of affairs, dictating the way things are to be done and because the woman is economically empowered, she tells the man to get to hell. The only thing I can say is that we should start thinking of how to manage the children born into such homes. There should be a law that permits the mother to take care of the children in their formative years while the man assists financially.

Being in an academic environment
Academic environment is what you make out of it. For socialisation, you have more than enough. If you are the hard working type who wants to excel, you have more than enough work to go by. To become a professor is not about acquiring more certificates but about researching and bringing up new things. So, while doing all these, preparing students and be relevant to them, I create social interactions in that setting. You can get enough interaction with students. One thing that is good about academic environment is that it gives you the freedom to express yourself and use your time judiciously

Religion / Bello Emerged As Kogi Governor For A Purpose – Pastor Kumuyi by Drsheddy(m): 9:30am On Jun 30, 2016
The General Superintendent of the Deeper Christian Life Ministry Worldwide, Pastor Williams F. Kumuyi, has said the emergence of Alhaji Yahaya Bello as Kogi governor was orchestrated by God for a purpose.

Kumuyi, who said this on Monday evening when he was received at the Government House Lokoja by the Governor, urged the people of the state to pray and rally support for the governor to enable him fulfill the plans of God for the state.

Amongst those that received Pastor Kumuyi include the state’s Deputy Governor, Elder Simon Achuba, Chief of Staff to the Governor, Hon. Edward Onoja, Secretary to the State Government, Mrs Ayoade Folashade Arike, commissioners and other top government functionaries.

The man of God hinted the governor that he was in the state with his delegation for a one day crusade with the theme: “Night of Miracle Explosion,” which he said would bring down the mighty power of God upon the people.

“I believe that our coming here will be a great blessing for this state. We rejoice with our Executive Governor how God himself providentially brought him into power at such a time as this in Kogi state for a purpose and that purpose that The Lord has in mind, He will fulfill it.

“I pray that his time will witness peace, progress and prosperity for Kogi State. All the challenges we all seem to have, as we rally round him with supports and prayers, I believe that by the time he finishes his term or terms, we will be able to look back and thank God that he was the one at the helms of affairs of this,” Kumuyi said.

The Pastor urged Bello and his cabinet to be transparent and have the fear of God in conducting the affairs of the state.

Speaking at the reception, Governor Bello described the visit of Pastor Kumuyi to Kogi as wonderful and a dream come through for himself and people of the state.

“I said this because, this a holy month and receiving a holy man of God from the Christian faith in this holy month of Ramadan, it is indeed a wonderful day. This a man of God I have always dreamt in my life to meet. When I was in the primary school, I read one of his books that he wrote, ‘Examine Yourself.’ From that moment, I have always examined myself in everything I do,” he said.

He expressed the confidence that the visit of the man of God and his prayers for the state would bring down blessings and address the challenges bedeviling the state.

Bello called on those in his cabinet, workers and the entire citizens of the state to always examine themselves in whatever they do to ensure the state achieves the needed development and progress.

Our correspondent reports that Kumuyi’s crusade which attracted mammoth crowd of participants to the Lokoja Confluence Stadium all the state, recorded spectacular healing miracles and salvation after the man of God’s ministration.

Politics / Tribunal Update: Faleke Files 35 Grounds Of Appeal by Drsheddy(m): 5:43pm On Jun 23, 2016
Former running mate to the late Prince Abubakar Audu in the last November 21 Kogi State governorship election, James Faleke, has urged the Court of Appeal in Abuja to set aside the election tribunal’s verdict which upheld Yahaya Bello as governor.

In the appeal based on 35 grounds, Faleke is challenging the tribunal’s decision, except the part of the preliminary objection resolved in his favour.

He is praying for an order setting aside the judgment delivered on June 6, and an order granting all the reliefs sought in the petition.

Through his lawyer Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN), Faleke said the tribunal erred in law by refusing to grant his reliefs, particularly an order directing him to be sworn in as governor for the reason that there was no declaration made after the election.

He said: “One of the major reasons why the appellant instituted the petition at the lower tribunal was the failure of the first respondent (Independent National Electoral Commission) to make a declaration and return from the election of 21st November, 2015.

“The lower tribunal failed to consider whether there was any constitutional justification for the failure of the first respondent to make a return from the election.

“It failed to consider whether there was any constitutional basis for the declaration of the November 21, 2015 election as inconclusive. It merely based its decision in refusing the appellant’s claims on the failure of the first respondent to perform its statutory duty,” he said.

The appellant further argued that the tribunal was wrong to hold that he does not have the locus standi to present the petition before it.

Faleke said the reason given by INEC for declaring the election as inconclusive was that the margin of win between the joint ticket of Prince Abubakar Audu and appellant and the Wada/Awoniyi ticket, which was 41,353 votes, was less than the total number of registered voters in the 91 polling units were INEC decreed a supplementary election to hold.
