Politics / Re: VAT Collection: Appeal Court Orders Rivers, Lagos To Maintain Status Quo by duabba: 12:29pm On Sep 11, 2021 |
@Ibkhaleel001 I have read all posts on this topic, pages 1 - 8 so far (yes, I have got some time to waste). You obviously feel entitled and pained on behalf of your people. You made all manners of assertions to justify your stance and for all you posts and comments about the north being peaceful, being the biggest region with the largest population, I sighed cos I was born and bred in the north and lived amongst our brothers on that side. The truth is northern Nigeria has been the most unfair and most parasitic in the geopolitical relationship called Nigeria. You argued based on several points, but here below are some sincere facts that I think you are your ilk should ponder on: 1. Violence: You conveniently forgot all the riots that happened up north (Katsina Maitasine, Bauchi, Jos, Sokoto, Kaduna, Kano etc) with mostly southerners being the targets of death and destruction by rampaging mobs, sometimes driven by twisted sermons from religious leaders. The people of Jos had been attacked and killed severally before they were forced to start reacting. Till today, they are being attacked and killed but you remembered that they ate flesh (which was bad enough) to show that they too could be mad; after-all no region has monopoly of violence just that some people loves peace (not northerners like you claim) so much hence they don't react when marauding fulani herdsmen come killing. Imagine where this country would have been if every community react to the provocations of the Hausa-Fulani. 2. Biggest size/Largest population: So I ask what is the use of biggest size and population when most of them are unproductive? Ah! The Elections. OK. I believe that even if FIRS reserves the right to share VAT it should never be by population or geographic size but by how productivity of such geography or population. Truthfully, we cannot continue to reward laziness and as someone said, any fool can marry plenty wives and have multiple children. I have no issues with having multiple wives since you claim it helps abate social ills, granted. However, the number of kids per wife probably has to be curtailed cos right now what the north has given to Nigeria is a population problem, but if your leaders are smart, they can easily turn such a huge liability to assets and the only way is to provide free child and adult education. But again, how can greedy and selfish leaders retain power if the populace are enlighted? GEJ, wanted to help in that regard by building the schools for the almajarai, I guess you know that ended. Boko Haram provided an alternative that was embraced by your elites, now the chicken has come home to roost. 3. VAT Matters: I would not even over-flog this. I cannot be paying VAT which would be given to other states that are hardly productive in any sense of the word. On the flip side I see this state collection of VAT as a positive thing (if your leaders would be smart). Instead of insulting people on Nairaland with half-truths and poorly written articles, call your politically-inclined friends and family and brainstorm on how to make your states more economically viable or help your leaders to think creatively. Do you know how many southerners have never crossed the Niger? Why can't you think of a plan together with hoteliers, tour operators, government security agencies, airlines, cultural guides etc to invite people from the south to tour northern cities safely. You can only imagine the amount of jobs that can be created and businesses that would pay taxes from this example. On the flip side, imagine doing all this HARDWORK and your tax is used to reward some people who choose to sleep all day. Then you would be required to do it all over next month and the month after that. The Good Book says a worker deserves his wages. In conclusion, it takes so much energy to insult and respond to insults on Nairaland. if I were you all the insults received on this platform would make me so angry that I would gather my family and friends to brainstorm on how to use resources (human and otherwise) to grow the region in a sustainable manner, then try to influence the people and govt to work hard and delivery success; after all success is the best revenge. But again, I am not you! Take good care man! Ibkhaleel001: 1 Like |

Career / Re: Quitting My Lucrative Job For A Degree In Canada by duabba: 10:40am On Jul 20, 2017 |
I think the issue should not be about money earn-able in Canada, but more about the quality of life. In most western countries, you WOULD pay bills and tax. You can earn plenty (e.g N4m equivalent monthly) but spend just as much trying to live and survive. Many people traveled and are not able to build a house in the village cos they cannot save to send funds home (some others do have it easy). Like someone mentioned earlier, you may earn N400k monthly in Nigeria but you live like a king and even have savings; this is after carrying all your responsibilities. My advice: Take study leave if you must go to school, graduate with good grades and during this period, consider the issues (salary, rent, tax, immigration policies, racism, business climate, etc) then make your decision to stay or run back and take your job which can have better prospects cos of your new degree. But please don't travel based on hearsay. Truth is we never value Nigeria until you travel to see somethings or have some experiences. May God Almighty guide you and continually bless Nigeria! 4 Likes |

Hmm.... I really dunno what to say about this, but I'd share a colleague's experience. He said he and his family were robbed at night while they slept. The room were he & his wife slept was turned upside down and ransacked, they heard nothing. It was when his wife got to go ease herself at about 4am that she was confused at the state of room so she just asked in anger why he scattered the place and in confusion he responded that he did no such thing. When he arose in bewilderment, they found the front door wide open and came to the conclusion that they've been robbed. He said criminals now use sleeping spray through windows and other openings (see wetin heat fit cause?) to induce serious sleep in the occupants while they proceed to sneak/break-in and rob since house owners are in cloud 9. He has committed to permanent air conditioning now. When I heard this from a direct source, I just tire for this life. We all need to be hyper cautious cos these are perilous times. BTW... Career / Re: What Percentage Of Your Salary Should Be Allotted To Accommodation? by duabba: 10:40am On Mar 16, 2016 |
In Lagos, the most important issue is traffic/distance to work. I pay more to stay close to my office cos I'm able to accomplish more before & after work (including proper rest) than spend so much time & stress on the road to get to a cheaper apartment. For me quality of life is important, the money I save on transport, fuel & healthcare allows me to do other important things. So these are the considerations before you calculate percentages. 5 Likes |

We use their technologies, medicines, education and more.... But again, in these times no man/nation is an island. Donald Trump is simply a doofus who is not in tune with the realities of our time. Yes, he is not a member of the PDP but a former goverment official and a corrupt one at that. The fact that one suddenly becomes an outspoken opposition figure doesn't make him righteous. He plundered his state. Go check the records. I am against anyone, whether in PDP or not, that has engaged in govt deceit and corruption. |

Politics / Re: Nigerian Terrorist: What You Won't Hear In The Media by duabba: 9:02pm On Dec 28, 2009 |
@ duabba @EloSela We are all aware that radicalist elements exist in the West also and peeps there have much better access to radicalist messages from online sources and some mosques. These so-called islamic preachers have been able to brainwash people to live according to their dictates. Mutallab being called an Alfa while at college in Togo (not Nigeria) is nothing new as he wouldn't be the only one to be addressed as such. From most of the news sources, he spent time in a London university, then to Dubai, Egypt and Yemen. You would see that Nigeria has little or nothing to do with his extreme views because while here he was a very serious muslim and he contacted his dad from Yemen via text message that he want nothing to do with his family. All I am trying to do is to downplay the influence of Nigeria in the life of this chap before the last moments in which he boarded that plane. Fact remains all Nigerians are going to bear the brunt of Mutallab's actions directly or indirectly. PS: For Pete's sake, did you really expect the media to tell you he was radicalized in the UK? |
Politics / Re: Nigerian Terrorist: What You Won't Hear In The Media by duabba: 9:08pm On Dec 27, 2009 |
Your links provides a different angle to the whole thing. For those interested, check out the movie: Body of Lies by Leonardo Dicaprio. In today's world anything is possible, I also support independent research and less dependence on mainstream media. 2010 promises to be one of intense trans-national mafiaism. Nigeria had better put her house in order. MY OPINION: All Nigerians, through the power of the web should insist that even though Muttallab was a Nigerian by birth he was radicalized in Britain. Therefore, he didn't get his extremist views from here. If I were the Minister of Foreign Affairs, I would issue a travel alert stating that people should be wary of sending their wards to the west. That is same thing they would have done to us. In this situation, we should refuse to be at the recieving end of propaganda in whatever form or guise, we should quickly twist the story in our favor somehow. If this whole media flood starts, we as Nigerians would be branded as terrorists worldwide, we shouldn't sit down and mope but broadcast and amplify the side of the story favourable to us (the fact the father reported his son, and the fact he was radicalized when he was away from nigerian soil) while downplaying the other parts CNN and co are wont to put up in colorful headlines. We should refuse to allow others paint the rest of us, as they try to paint us black we should also try to wash ourselves (propaganda in the high level international relations is so real today than ever before). Most Nigerians on the net is screaming that we would all be branded as terrorist, as for me anyone that brands me or my countrymen as terrorists, I would label their lands as breeding farms for terrorism. Afterall some of their citizens also go off to fight for other lands against their nation. My 2 kobo! |
