Politics / Re: Gov. Nyako, Supporters Set To Defect To APC by DuduNegro: 3:08pm On Oct 25, 2013
On why the party picked Dikko to chair the committee, Tukur said his choice was informed by his defence of democracy that made the military government uncomfortabe, leading to a failed attempt by the Major General Muhammadu Buhari regime, which overthrew the civilian administration in 1983, to smuggle him to Nigeria from Britain where he had sought asylum.

“You are chosen to this important committee based on your past record and love for democracy,” he said to Dikko.

This statement should be decried and censored by the media. This is past freedom of speech, this is a r.a.pe! For such a blatant revision of truth and upending of historical fact by a national party chairman, particularly regarding the political record of Dikko, it goes to prove that PDP has lost its bearing. Finding it difficult to recruit sincere and well branded leaders......it has settled to fill its leadership posts with looters in the band of Dikko, Abacha, Ibori and so on.

There ought to be a self-rebranding drive in PDP to shake off the accusations from the G7 and position itself favorably as "the choice".

Using Dikko as somewhat of an anti-Buhari pivotal edge to fight APC will win negative response for PDP.

This is not a good day! Umaru Dikko loves money, plenty of it, he was stealing billions back when nobody knew how many zeros count to a billion, and in pounds sterling not naira! Dikko could care less about democracy.....he just wants a opportunity to loot.

BIAFRA, CRIME CAPITAL OF CENTRAL AFRICA

Where would you likely be a victim of crime in Nigeria? See the safest and most dangerous states in Nigeria.Enugu State, in the south east, is the official crime capital of Nigeria, a crime perception survey released on Monday in Abuja has said.At least 70 per cent of respondents to the survey in Enugu admitted they were victims of crime in the past year, the 2013 National Crime Victimization and Safety Survey conducted by CLEEN Foundation showed. The national average was 25 per cent – one in every four Nigerian. The survey showed a progressive decrease in the number of victims of crime in Nigeria.“There has been a six per cent decrease in actual experience of crime from the 31 per cent recorded in 2012 to the current 25 percent,” the report said.

The report surveyed for crimes like robbery, kidnapping, physical assault, phone and car theft, molestation and attempted molestation, domestic violence, attempted murder and other crimes.

The Crime Victimization Survey used data collected across Nigeria between June and July 2013.Closely following Enugu State is its neighbour, Ebonyi, where at least 65 per cent – at least three in every five residents – were victims of crime.Ekiti state, in southwest Nigeria, shares the same crime records with Ebonyi State. More than three in every five respondents admitted they were victims of crime last year.Ogun State, a neighbour to Lagos is the safest state in Nigeria with only about one in every 20 citizens admitting they were victims of crimes last year.Katsina State in Northwest Nigeria is the next safest. Only about one in every 10 residents was a victim of crime last year.Lagos State recorded 18 percent.Borno and Yobe, despite being the hotbed for Boko Haram attacks recorded seemingly low crime rates, according to the report. Only about one in every four resident admitted being victims of crime last year. Boko Haram militants have murdered over 1,500 people in the states since launching a vicious attack against government establishments, security agencies, religious places and the residents.

At a geopolitical level, the South East recorded the highest number of crimes with 44 per cent of respondents complaining they were victims.

The North West recorded the lowest score of 18 per cent crime rate.On a gender scale, more men than women fell victims of crimes in Nigeria last year.“Further (segregation) by gender indicates that more men (27%) had actual experience than women (23%),” the report said.Irony of feelingAlthough Ogun State recorded the lowest actual experience of crime, almost everyone in the state fear they would become victims of crime. The findings of the 2013 survey indicated that 94 per cent of Ogun residents fear they are likely victims of crime. In actual sense, only one in 20 was a victim of crime. On a national scale, more than 7 out of 10 Nigerians had the fear of becoming victims of crime last year. The people who feel safest are those in Benue and Taraba States. Only 38 per cent of residents in those state had fears of becoming victims of crime. One in four residents of Benue state were victims of crime last year, and not more than one in every six in Taraba.“Analysing by gender, 73 percent of females feared becoming victims of crime compared to 71 percent of males,” the report said.“Overall, these findings are meant to assist the government, police and the entire criminal justice administration system to better understand emerging trends in crime and safety in Nigeria and consequently, to refine and deploy improved strategies to resolve the country’s current challenges of security and safety,” the authors, CLEEN Foundation, said.

Business / Re: Aregbesola Forces Commercial Banks To Open At 10.00am Every Thursday by DuduNegro: 10:09am On Oct 24, 2013
emmasege: De Rauf has added another "feather to his cap" by introducing another unpopular policy in Osun State i.e. forcing banks to open every Thursday by 10.00am. The directive, which has been binding on traders and filling stations has also extended to commercial banks. Up until now, commercial and private vehicles can't fill their fuel tanks irrespective of whether they are travelling from another state or within the state, if they run out of fuel within Osun territory. The primary objective of this "shut-down" order is for traders and those filling stations to clean their environments every Thursday morning before 10am. One would have expected the Government agencies to rather supervise the cleaning of the environments of those concerned between those hours instead of asking them to close down shops and businesses.

With the directive now extended to commercial banks every Thursday morning, one begins to wonder if De Rauf has a good economic sense or even a good economic adviser in his cabinet. This means that at the end of every month, each commercial bank in the state would have lost at least one working day (8 hours) which runs to millions of naira in terms of economic loss.
What are the merits and demerits of this directive?

I would like economists in the house to review this policy critically, while De Raufs also defend it with their biases.

You cannot substitute money for public sanitation and health. Banks are respectable institutions in society and they must partner with government to motivate for responsible living and civic values.

If an epidemic hits the city, God forbid, they will close to the public longer and loose far more than that 8hrs which bothers you.

Health is wealth, ........not the other way round!

We must hold APCs feet to the fire.

The people of this country have repeatedly demanded for SNC and is now officially granted.

We understand that its process is not the best and moreover its mandate is also wrong but as a policy, the decision to move forward on the SNC is a good one. There are two things APC can do but what it must not do is kill the debate and realization of this policy.

1. APC need to publish its official proposal for how the SNC should be structured and implemented.

2. We the people of Nigeria, are calling on APC to collaborate with PDP and sort through the kinks and both parties, ruling and opposition, must come up with an amicable interest in how to press forward and conduct a SNC.

The people own SNC, not PDP, not APC and definitely not NASS.

APC need to tread carefully so it does not on account of politicising the SNC loose its popularity and favor with the people.

No othe region, not even the Colonial government or Nigerian government gave people free health. Western Nigeria built the first stadium in Sub sahara, first tv in Africa as a whole. Awo stood on the legislative floor in Lagos and told the white Governor General that he had no use for them because he has accomplished successfully in 14yrs for Western Nigeria what they failed in 100yrs from 1860 to 1960 to achieve for Nigeria.

This statement by Awo need to be on a plaque and on display in the museum in Cocoa House. It should be taught and phrased the way JFK's inauguration theme was phrased....or MLK's March on Washington speech was phrased.

Awo must be immortalized. If this was 1700s Yorubaland the man will be deified!

I mean in general summary of crime commited. i have been in almost every region in naija so i know what am talking about.

ogugua88:

That's why I asked if you read the article.

The charts came from victimization surveys.

The surveys CLEEN is basing their national findings on were conducted by Practical Sampling International (PSI).

11,518 men and women from each of the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria were surveyed.

Surely, they are not error proof, but the charts were made by answers from every day Nigerians and not court records or police arrests.

Let's not dodge facts. The research only proves what people with common sense already knew. Nigeria doesn't really have a safety zone, and citizens from each and every corner of the country are scared. It's not a SW, or SE, or SS, or NW, etc., problem. Lack of security/high crime is a Nigerian problem. The sooner people realize that all of us, rather than one region or tribe, have soiled hands, the sooner we get on the right track. Threads like this and that of Enugu being the crime capitol don't draw us closer to progress in all seriousness.

So is the report by USIS wrong. If I present you with the report from UK and EU on travel waning for Nigeria would that seal it for you?

Cleen is running a business.

This would be like CNN saying America has won the war on terror. That will kill their business. To promote business they have tobstay relevant.

Cleen is trying to stay relevant. Thry are biased.

Lets look at unbiased and non-commercial interest and their position on security and safe zones in Nigeria. What do they say?
Crime / Re: Southwest, Kidnap Capital Of Nigeria by DuduNegro: 3:50am On Oct 23, 2013
ogugua88:

Let's agree with your statement that SE is the kidnapping capital. Do explain to me how that makes a man or woman in Lagos any safer.

Did you look at the charts or read the research at all?

Its a fraud to give information to the public that negatively impacts and distorts the truth about events in any one region as is done here by Cleen.

To get a true and accurate info on the rate of kidnapping you cannot go by court records or police arrest because those two are inconsistent you must run a risk factor survey in which you ask people in each region to assess security risk in their areas.

Why is the family of Governor of Akwa Ibom relocated to SW, why are all the important elite groups in SS/SE relocated to SW, why are all the important and leadership decision making meetings in SE held in SW?

What is risk factor that terrifies prople in SS/SE and cause their migratory drift to SW?

Charts and polls and statistical datas are indicators, they are not error proof and are very subjectively attached to an end.

The end here is security contracts for Cleen. The Chairman of the board has degree in criminology. Lagos is fighting a war on crime. He has to raise the risk bar and promote his company as a solution for the problem.

In a sane society he will be blacklisted by government and as well sued.

There is crime everywhere but the capital of kidnapping is in SS/SE, not SW.

Cleen is run by Nigerians and their input is bias considering their campaign is strategically positioned to gain inroad and win contracts for crime control in Lagos. If they said its SE or SS nobody will pay them attention.. They need relevance and crime fighting is big money in Lagos.....they want some of that contract in their pocket.

Passion 007,

Read following and point out one SW state in this bulletin.

The Department of State warns U.S. citizens of the risks of travel to Nigeria and recommends that U.S. citizens avoid all travel to Adamawa, Borno, and Yobe states because of the proclamation on May 14, 2013, by the government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria of States of Emergency in those three states. The ability of the Mission to provide assistance to U.S. citizens in those states remains severely limited. The Department also continues to recommend against all but essential travel to the following states due to the risk of kidnappings, robberies, and other armed attacks: Abia, Akwa Ibom, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Delta, Edo, Gombe, Imo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Niger, Plateau, Rivers, Sokoto, and Zamfara. The Department also warns against travel to the Gulf of Guinea because of the threat of piracy. Based on safety and security risk assessments, the Embassy maintains restrictions for travel by U.S. officials to all northern Nigerian states (in addition to those listed above); officials must receive advance clearance by the U.S. Mission for any travel deemed as mission-essential. U.S. citizens should be aware that extremists could expand their operations beyond northern Nigeria to the country's middle and southern states. This Travel Warning replaces the Travel Warning for Nigeria dated December 21, 2012.

DeLaRue: My brother, Oyo has history on its side. We agree.

That should not be the sole basis for making Ibadan (not synonymous with Oyo) the capital forever. I visited Ibadan for the first time earlier this year and was enthused to see that it was not the crappy place we were led to believe it was by certain Nairalanders.

I have nothing against Ibadan. I want it to prosper.

But please, I am only looking at this from one angle and one angle only - how can we escalate developments in states like Ondo, Ekiti, and Osun? It is proving so difficult. All we get are governors who can only fix a few roads, and God-willing build some schools and hospitals. We hear these 3 states simply do not have enough money.

Set against that, we hear on a daily basis that Lagos, Oyo, and Ogun are firing on all cylinders on the economic front. Again, fantastic. I spend a lot of time in Lagos, and I see statistics that most people dont get to see. I am actually passionate about Lagos as the fulcrum of SW economic renewal.

From my view, we need to try something new with these 3 states where ever possible. And all I am saying is if a new administrative paradigm emerges in Nigera and the SW needs to have an administrative capital, why dont we consider a town/city in one of the struggling states. Yes, this will be a big compromise on the part of Ibadan and Oyo people. But my God! what a wonderful compromise it would be for a big brother to say you know what, I will let go a little bit for the sake of my younger ones. We do this on daily basis in our personal lives.

Would it not be wonderful for this to be replicated on a broader Omoluwabi stage. Why the obstinate no! no! no!

Again I reiterate for the umpteenth time, Akure was just the town that came to mind initially and yes my justifications focused on Ondo state. I am just not that familiar with the other poor states - Ekiti and Osun.

I will make the same argument for any other town in any of the 3 states.

Your original post should have opened on this quest. This response is welconing.

No Yoruba state was immuned from the wastefullness and largesse of corruption instituted at the center.

There are certain critical timelines in the evolution of modern democracy in Yorubaland. Your issue is addressed in all of them.

1. 1957
Western Nigeria gained independence from colonial rule and went into self-governance.

Awolowo installed his socialist reform policies for free education, free healthcare and launched public awareness programs through print media, radio broadcast and tv programming.
His field agents, in conjunction with public information broadcasters, took the message of "education" into rural Yorubaland and campaigned vigorously to farmers and artisans on the value of education and its relational benefit to the land, the farm, the peoole and their community.

2. 1960
Nigeria is Independent and self-governance is returned to the people.

Awolowo retained the sovereingty of Western Nigeria as a concrete power and viewed Nigerian sovereingty as a pseudo-power to exist simply as an experiment. His progressive policies covered all the way up to what is today Ijaw territories and Anioma. No land under the umbrella of Western coverage was left untouched. This ran counter to the ambition in the center. Awolowo and the West must be slowed down. Part of the scheme to effect the slow down was strenghtening the center as a Republic and thereby effecting a new citizenship status - the political impact is that Yorubas thus lost their citizenship as Westerners and became citizens under a Federal Republic of Nigeria in 63.

Also, the Federal Republic with its new power sabotaged the Western interest and aroused division by campaigning a propaganda of deceipt that Yorubas want to use the resources of non-Yorubas in the Western Region to develop Yorubaland and subdue them as second class citizens in the region. That propaganda succeeded in collecting signatories for a break-away from West and the creation of MidWestern State.

Following that, Awolowo, unperturbed, continued to score many developments on the ground. He introduced produce board, farmers cooperative councils, savings and investment banks, Oodua development board, Cocoa House, incentive laced industrial complexes and a robust taxation system to fund the socialist programs of education, healthcare, retirement and pension, trade and skills learning centers as well as expansion of public awareness programs and the establishment of a political think tank group.

Cracks in the internal disagreements within the party was exploited to launch chaos and disorder. Awolowo was falsely charged of treason. Akintola was installed, mayhem broke and the independence status of Western Nigeria was substantially erased when Federal troops were deployed to maintain law and order. Politically that was a territorial invasion into a sovereign soil. That event brought Yorubaland firmly into the grip of Federal authorities and Yoruba lost its 1957 sovereingty privilege.

3. 1966.
Double Coups and military power
In quick successions and back to back all the ideals of a great Yoruba societyand the 9yrs progress from 57 to 66 were thrown out. There was no way we could ever reverse and gain those exclusive trajectory of developments back.

However, with the widespread frustration of failure with the experiments of nationhood, it appeared that egos were deflated and defeated in the two regions North and East who in their political coalition had ganged up to retard the sovereign progress in the West, and finally each region might take its loss and start back up where it missed the road in 63. If that had happened West could perharps have had a second shot at it....after all, beside the ones killed in the coups, most of the principal ideologues were still alive and the blueprint is there, the infrastructures were there.

Yoruba was ready for another shot at sovereingty, North was ready and it appeared MidWest and East were ready. This was the first SNC, popularly called Aburi Accord.

In its implementation, East raised accusations that the central military power was biased and lacked credibility. East approached the Accord as a matter of principles and failed to see the political benefit. Even when the political rewards were pointed out and they were persuaded to accept that and use it pivotally to later negotiate and firm up on the principles, it was rejected as all or nothing. In the struggle to gain much East ended up loosing all. The hope therefore that Nigeria will be dissolved was lost and a new eliteclass of rulers mounted the center.

4. 1967
War
A negotiated agreement to move all non-Yoruba military personnell out of Yorubaland had been won and was awaiting execution when East suddenly marched into MidWest and changed the course of events.

Yorubaland was occupied by a horde of non-Yoruba foreigners conscripted in the North by Federal power and then Biafra had advanced into Ore and aiming for Lagos and Ibadan.

If Federal troops had deployed out before Biafra had launch, there might not be a Nigeria today and West would have secured its borders militarily against incursion in East or North. This would definitely have prompted Ojukwu to view his opportunities from a different angle....but his rebellion resulted in another missed opportunity for sovereingty.

5. 1970 to 79
Military Leadership
For the first time in the history of Yorubaland a non-Yoruba sits as a ruler over the land and directs the affairs in our Oba's palace.

We ended up with foreigners as governors over us. Not only did we loose a sovereingty, we also lost right of political supremacy that dated back into ancient history. Never before has any foreign power dictated decision making to an Ooni or an Alaafin. Even the Colonialists did not do that. Now we have an Ezechukwu and a Yakassai, a Donald and a Luther, a Babagana and a Okon serving as Lords over us.

These are some of the pains of what the loss of sovereingty cost us.

6. 1979
Return to Democracy
The period of 70 to 79 has brought in the new age of national project. Government contractors were swimming in wealth. A new movement came alive.....the movement of money is power! It used to be Independence is power in the 60s. MKO, Akinjide, Omoboriowo, Ogunlana.....these people departed from the Yoruba struggle and consciousness for exclusivity and sovereingty and camped with the power in the center for personal gains.

Yorubaland lost its grip on self-sufficiency from 79 through 99.....a period of twenty years!

In that period, we suffered on our land a repeat of what we went through between 63 and 70, except that this time it happened on a different scale.

6. 2000 to 2015
Our experience has taught lessons. We have seen wisdom in the knowledge that we are at our best when we focus in on our commonwealth and regard Nigera as a toxic and unfriendly landscape and our land and people must be secured and shielded from its vagaries.

We are confronted by another opportunity to give Western Sovereingty a shot. Elements of individualism must be subdued for the purpose of collective gains.

If everybody agitate for their land or state to be capital.....then where do we get food, educators, military, artisans, and so on?

Each land must put forward its best footing and be our capital for that value-add to the society.

he did say he's eating raw spinach in europe, maybe he got his place names confused.

......Yoruba political problem always start in Ondo. PDP is recruiting the next set of trouble rousers. Agbekoya is not dead, neither is Afenifere. Mimiko and all the LP stalwarts in that state are not indispensable. DelaRue is an opinion poller and this is how they test the temperaments to navigate an unsafe waters.
