Politics › Re: Cement Decrease Very Difficult - Dangote by dustydee: 9:33am On May 25, 2011 |
Wallie: Just to be fair to the Dangote’s…
There’s no way a Nigerian business will compete with China head-on. You guys are probably right that you can get the cement to Nigeria at a cheaper financial cost but what is the overall cost?
Every country has an element of protectionism in their policy; otherwise, you will run the local businesses out of existence. There’s also no question that there’s collusion going on in the cement industry, among others.
What Jonathan needs are people that understand the balancing-act that has to take place to allow local companies to grow while not gouging the public. It may be as simple as limiting the number of imported cement or taxing it enough to a price point that allows local companies to compete.
When you kill local companies, you not only kill jobs but you also lose the technical know-how and spend all your foreign exchange enriching other economies. what we need to know is how much it costs to produce locally and how much it costs to land imported cement in Nigeria. I bet you the cost is not the same so why is the difference not noticed in the market? |

blacksta: By Obas Esiedesa, Senior Reporter, Abuja
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has disclosed that Dr. Goodluck Jonathan’s presidency added over 1,000 Mega Watts (MW) of electricity to the national grid in the last one year. NERC Chairman, Dr. Sam Amadi, said this in a congratulatory letter to the president at the weekend. Amadi attributed the level of stability in electricity supply in the country to what he called the Jonathan’s commitment and resolve to pursue the vision of safe, stable and adequate electricity supply in the country. The NERC boss said: “when you became President in May 2010 we could only boast of less than 2,600 megawatts. “Today, generation has gone to 3,800mw and has never gone below 3,500mw.” The commission while commending this feat, expressed optimism that the president’s victory at the just concluded election was an indication of better prospects for electricity industry in the country. “The overwhelming mandate given to you by Nigerian people is recognition of the sincerity and courage with which you have managed the reform in the power sector.
http://www.independentngonline.com/DailyIndependent/Article.aspx?id=34252 so by if by may 29th power generation is 2000MW and when he's leaving in 2015 it goes up to 4000MW we will congratulate him and say he has added 2000MW to the grid? pro01: Very enlightening stuff, especially how you know the prices of all the drinks. You guys are making me feel dirt poor; and to think that I was at least 'comfortable' enough to be grateful? I'm now convinced that hard work doesn't pay. It's obvious that guys who waste scarce resources this way are into some sort of illegality. Crime does pay. I've been re-thinking my life, modus operandi, and guiding principles of late. It's clear that I can't compete on the basis of the status quo.
And are you guys by any means suggesting that the average cost of securing the services of a hot 'take-away' for just ONE NIGHT in Abuja is N50k? ? ? Please tell me this is not true. So if she 'works' thrice a week she'd be earning N600,000/month?! ! ! That can't be true. It is simply outrageous! was going to say that. No doubt that's what a lot of criminals do. Can't buy a bottle of drink for 10k even if it's holy water blessed by the Pope. But really will a man pay N50k for a night of pleasure?politicians will but i don't think a normal human being would. |

Politics › Why Jonathan Is Giving Out Free Computers by dustydee(op): 9:28am On May 24, 2011 |
The Minister of State for Education, Chief Kenneth Gbagi, on Monday explained that President Goodluck Jonathan approved the donation of laptop computers to girls in selected junior secondary schools in order to ensure gender equality.
Gbagi said this while presenting 360 laptop computers to female students of eight selected secondary schools in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State capital.
He said the Information and Communication Technology initiative of Jonathan administration also involved training of teachers in all the benefitting schools on the use of modern technologies.
The minister said the programme was being driven by the Millennium Development Goals Debt Relief Fund and that it was an MDG-assisted ICT initiative.
He said the president placed high premium on the attainment of qualitative education by all Nigerians, irrespective of age, gender, geographical and cultural settings.
Gbagi insisted that qualitative education required improvement on teaching, learning and educational administration.
He said Jonathan had directed that ICT should be taken seriously in the country’s educational system owing to its vital role in improving quality in education.
In his address, the MDG-ICT Project Coordinator at the Federal Ministry of Education, Mr. Uwem Asomugha, said the choice of the girl-child as the initial beneficiary of the programme was to emphasise the importance of women in nation building.
He said girls were integral to poverty reduction, sustenance of development and good governance.
The benefiting students were drawn from secondary schools in the three senatorial districts in the state, consisting of the Federal Government College, Immiringi; the Government Secondary School, Okpoama; the Community Girls Secondary School, Odi; the St. Jude Girls Secondary School, Amarata and the Community Girls Secondary School, Nembe.
Girls from the Government Secondary School, Otuoke; the River Nun Grammar School, Agbere, and the Agudama Comprehensive High School, Agudama, also benefitted from the programme. which type of country is this? Can't ICT centers be built in those schools instead of giving the laptops to individuals? What if those poor girls sell the laptops and use the money to support their parents?questions and more questions. I'm tired honestly I am. |

The day Jonathan move the FCT to bonny island(which i hope he does), the people of north central can change the name from Zik to David Jang International Airport. @calid, i understand what you're saying. May be the FG should consult with local people before naming places after so called national heroes and then Lagosians will ask why Lagos airport is named Awolowo and not Tinubu since Tinubu is a Lagosian.
