Politics / Re: Don't Blame Me For Your Party's Self-Inflicted Woes - Jonathan Tells Buhari by earthgreeners(m): 5:52am On Jul 22, 2014
ceo4eva: [s]We have noted with much surprise and regret, the statement issued by General Muhammadu Buhari today in which he made some wild and totally unsustainable allegations against President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.

Although he tries very hard to deny it in the statement titled “Pull Nigeria Back From the Brink”, there can be no doubt that General Buhari has sadly moved away from the patriotic and statesmanlike position he recently adopted on national security, which President Jonathan publicly commended, and has now reverted to unbridled political partisanship.
There can be no other explanation or justification for the completely unwarranted and very uncharitable assault on the conduct and integrity of President Jonathan which the statement he issued today represents.

General Buhari’s main grouse which clearly motivated his ill-considered statement appears to be what he called “the gale of impeachments or the utilisation of desperate tactics to suffocate the opposition and turn Nigeria into a one-party state”.It is most unfortunate that instead of working to put their house in order and resolve the leadership crises and internal contradictions that have plunged their party into a downward spiral, General Buhari and his opposition allies have resorted to blaming a blameless President for their woes.

The processes for impeaching an elected Governor are clearly stipulated in the National Constitution which Nigeria has operated since 1999. The President of Nigeria is not assigned any role in that process and President Jonathan has certainly not played any role in the recent impeachment of Governor Murtala Nyako of Adamawa or in the impeachment drama currently being played out in Nasarawa State. For the record, President remains fully committed to upholding the letters, principles and spirit of the Nigerian Constitution as he has sworn, and defending the rule of law and integrity of the democratic process with all his might.

General Buhari talks about anarchy. He needs to be reminded that President Jonathan from his humble beginnings as a Deputy Governor in Bayelsa state to date, has never in his acts, or utterances, recommended or promoted violence as a tool of political negotiation.

Contrary to whatever General Buhari and his new friends may imagine, President Jonathan fully respects the rights, powers, authority and independence of elected representatives of the people, including the members of the state assemblies who have concluded or initiated impeachment proceedings against their state governors on grounds which they consider justifiable. The constitution does not give the President any power to intervene in such proceedings and President Jonathan has never arrogated such powers to himself or sought to exert any nefarious and unconstitutional influence on state assemblies in Adamawa, Nasarawa or anywhere else in other to secure undue political advantage for his party as General Buhari unjustifiably alleges.

President Jonathan remains true to his declaration that no political ambition of his is worth the life of a single Nigerian. The President has definitely not declared war on his own country or deployed federal institutions in the service of partisan interests as General Buhari falsely claims. Neither has he been using the common wealth to subvert the system and punish the opposition, as the former Head of State inexcusably asserts.
Also, President Jonathan has never at any time ordered that any Nigerian should be kidnapped or that anyone should be crated and forcefully transported in violation of decent norms of governance.

We therefore urge General Buhari to tarry a while, ponder over his own antecedents and do a reality check as to whether he has the moral right to be so carelessly sanctimonious. It may well be time to pull the brakes, as General Buhari says in his statement, but it is he and others who have resorted to idle scapegoating and blaming President Jonathan for their self-inflected political troubles who need to stop their inexcusable partisanship and show greater regard for the truth, democracy, constitutionalism, the rule of law, peace, security and the well-being of the nation.

Politics / EFCC Questions Agric Ministry's Permanent Sec. Over Fertilizer Scam by earthgreeners(m): 2:30am On Jul 04, 2014
LAGOS—Alarmed by the furore over a N2.4 billion fertiliser scam currently rocking the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, yesterday, invited top officials of the ministry for questioning over their role in the controversial deal.

Those invited to the headquarters of the EFCC in Abuja for questioning were: The Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Mrs. Ibikun Odusote and other top officials of the ministry.
A top source in the commission told Vanguard that the permanent secretary and her officials were quizzed for some hours in a bid by their interrogators to unravel their roles in the fertilizer racketeering now rocking the ministry.

Though the source did not disclose the details of the interrogation, he, however, said that the ministry bigwigs “made statements before they were allowed to go.”
The source explained that the affected officials could be recalled for regular interrogation since the investigation had just begun in a bid to track down all those who aided and abetted the multi-million naira sting.

“The investigation is ongoing and if they are needed, they will definitely be invited,” an EFCC source said yesterday.
The fertiliser fraud was blown open by a petition fired by the lawyer to the Enterprise Bank Limited, Ade Okeaya-Inneh, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, against one Abubakar Musa, who is the bank’s Agric Desk Officer and three other companies: Messrs Madalla Enterprises, Ani B. Barak Nigeria Limited and Al Iman Agro Ventures Limited.

Trouble reportedly started when the bank granted loans to the three firms in April last year to purchase fertiliser for the Ministry of Agriculture and they never paid back the loan in full despite having secured the products and sold same.
The three companies are said to have received products from the Growth Enhancement Scheme that was far in excess of what they paid for.

MBS Merchant Limited, the supplier of the fertilizer allegedly claimed to have supplied the three companies with fertilizers worth N2,437,050.000 for which it only received payment of N844,700,000.00
The petitioner alleged that although the fertiliser were procured at the Federal Government subsidised rate and meant to be sold to Nigerian farmers, they were diverted to neighbouring country and sold at exorbitant rates for pecuniary reasons.

A source said that some unnamed ministry officials connived with the firms to cheat the government, which had given waivers to enable the products to be brought into the country at subsidised rate so that farmers could get them at cheaper prices and grow more food.
The EFCC operatives, it was learnt last night, are trying to establish the roles played by each of the officials of the ministry and the bank in the rip-off with a view to prosecuting the culprits.

When contacted, Wilson Uwujaren, EFCC spokesperson, confirmed the interrogation of the ministry officials but declined to give further details.
“It is true that some officials of the ministry were questioned over fertiliser-related matter but I don’t have the details,” Uwujaren said.

Politics / Femi Aribisala's Amnesia by earthgreeners(m): 2:21am On Jul 04, 2014
The Special Adviser Media to Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, in this rejoinder, dismisses Dr. Femi Aribisala’s latest column entitled The beginning of the end of Bola Tinubu
DR. Femi Aribisala’s recent article “The beginning of the end of the Bola Tinubu Dynasty” should not have appeared in The Vanguard or in any newspaper for that matter. What this piece represented was a contribution to fiction writing, not responsible journalism.

Even there, it was bad fiction. Aribisala is so obsessed with his animus toward Asiwaju Tinubu that Aribisala cannot see or think straight. Thus, his writing is crooked. If one did not know better, one would think Aribisala does not hate Tinubu as much as he envies the man. Aribisala wishes he were Tinubu. Instead, Aribisala is relegated to being the Asiwaju of his own imagination.
Asiwaju Bola Tinubu

Asiwaju Bola Tinubu

The article is presented as an objective news analysis and commentary. In doing so, the writer does injury to the newspaper, the truth and to the reading public. The piece begins with a purported quotation from Bola Tinubu himself used to paint him in an unsavory light. The problem is that this quotation never occurred. It was figment of the author’s dire, envious imagination.

What was presented as fact is fantasy. The man has the freedom to write whatever he pleases be it fact or fiction. However, it is unethical for him to portray as incisive journalism what are nothing but the fruits of personal hatred translated into paper and ink. When the truth does not prove the point he wants to make, Aribisala invents his own truth. While this might be an asset for a fiction writer, for a public commentator, it is a serious trespass against the tenets of responsible journalism.

Responsible journalism

Aribisala may well be jumping through these unethical hoops to currying the favor of the monarch of Aso Villa. But he should not be so hypocritical as to try to confuse us that his efforts are done as a public service.

The man actually criticizes Asiwaju for being a successful political leader as if doing so were some type of sin when , in fact, Nigeria is in great need of more far-sighted politician leaders not fewer. Aribisala claims Asiwaju wants to be another Awolowo. Here, why did not he quote Tinubu who has rebuked this charge many times? Repeatedly, he has stated there can only be Awolowo and to try to fit into his shoes is to lace yourself to failure.

We must learn from the great one and the principles he espoused so that we meet the challenges of our time as our legendary mentor and leader would have us do. This Tinubu’s position regarding Awo. If you want to accuse Tinubu of believing that Awolowo is the father of progressive politics in Nigeria, he would plead guilty. But Aribisala accuses him of trying to supplant Awolowo. The accusation is wrong and mean-spirited.

Again, at one point, Aribisala invents a Tinubu quote to as proof for his lies. Then at this point, the writer ignores Tinubu’s public statements because those statements rebuff the lie Aribisala seeks to perpetrate in the public mind. This comes to the meat of the matter. This hack writer asserts that Tinubu seeks a dynasty. He cannot be more incorrect. Tinubu is a leader of a political reform movement along with other patriotic Nigerians.

When Tinubu held fast against the tyranny of the PDP and its attempt to capture all states by any means necessary that was the work of a man committed to democracy. If he had not stood against the great odds against him and his party, the PDP would likely have turned Nigeria into a one-party state by now.

Instead, the APC has come about and now challenges the PDP in an unprecedented manner. Any objective person would conclude that this competition is beneficial for the public and for the growth of Nigerian democracy. It begs the question why Aribisala seems not to see this enormous contribution. He does not see it because those whose favor he seeks do not want him to expose this truth to the wider public.

Take a look at the men Tinubu has helped in their quest for public office. Fashola, Fayemi, Aregbesola, Oshiohmole, Ajimobi, Amosun, etc. These men are not non performing “yes men”. They are all dynamic and outstanding performers in their own right. Each is different than the other and each state government excels in its own unique way.

Dynastic pretence

This means that Tinubu is not orchestrating them into some limited uniformity but stands out of the way for them to lead as they believe. No major politician in Nigeria has a track record as good as Tinubu’s when it comes to supporting able people for office then leaving them to perform as they believe. Nowhere in the PDP does this happen.

If Aribisala wants to see and criticize something with dynastic pretence, he should do an expose on the PDP. In barking at Tinubu, he is barking at the wrong house.

This brings us to the Ekiti election. The vote count is in and the PDP has been named the winner. Because there were few overt instances of violence, people have lauded the election as free and fair. I caution you not to be too hasty in drawing that conclusion.

Slowly, the truth is coming out about how the military blanketed the state and intimidated APC members and office holders, including the governor himself. A new, subtler form of voter and opposition intimidation took place.

We have taken note and shall be prepared to outwit it the next time.On a larger note, Bola Tinubu is one of the leaders of a reformist national opposition party contesting against a behemoth, immoral ruling party that will use any all measures to keep power. This is a long marathon we run. There will be obstacles and pitfalls along the way. Ekiti was one but we are not deterred. Our objective is good and right. We seek democratic good governance for the people. We are not ashamed about that.

If seeking to make the people’s vote count and to make government care for the people is wrong, then let us be wrong. For we know that we will only be in the wrong to people with jaded vision such as Aribisala. History shall prove us right. Long after Aribisala’s efforts find their way to the bottom of the wastebasket, the APC shall stand as having pulled Nigeria from the precipice. And history will score Tinubu with high marks for ever remaining the one man standing.

[s]Is a betrayal of petty and biased lenses. To say that PDP- an idea conceived by Dr Alex Ekwueme-led G-34, which was hijacked and bastardised by a vendetta-chasing, freed prisoner Obasanjo was founded by yoruba and hausa is, in the least, disengenious.

Its now revised that the Yoruba that were actively involved in anti-state activities over Abiola's mandate with NADECO, OPC and AD fully in the opposition, which caused the round and totally rejection of Obj in the 1999 election, are today founders of PDP- in the gospel according to sloan.

So Igbo cannot run a party? When Ogbulafor pointed out the zoning principle to Nigerians in the Igbo principle of justice- you watched him removed and mocked him since he is Igbo ditto Nwodo, now you turn back to whine that Igbo are voting for sentiments after they pitched their tent in PDP- and for strategic reasons retaining APGA. And which of the party's was run successfully by Tinubu except grabbing power via the law court using taxes from oil Coys headquartered in Lagos, instead of the ND where the operations, to settle?

You forget that the Igbo is just too big for a single Yoruba to coarse into any unprofitable alliance- to be enslaved. Please bury your sentiments and let the SE and SS to remain in PDP until their son completes his term(s)- after all the ethnic bandwagon card has always been played by Yoruba and Hausa in the name of 'political sophistication' while Igbo are mocked when different individuals express the right to aspire to an office- not anymore .

We know that before long Afenifere will call the bluff of Tinubu and settle for a decentralised Nigeria supporting GEJ to see off his term in a weak centre. Before then Tinubu will run to GEJ for an understanding to retain his five states-Ondo is LP/PDP- and allow the people make their choice in the presidential election. I can assure it won't be to a gambari- certainly not now even though some wants to serve on![/s]
