Jumia Entreprenuership Program

As a move to support businesses bounce back, Jumia Nigeria launched a competition to help startups and entrepreneurs in Nigeria. This targets startups and entrepreneurs developing digital products and smart solutions that seek to solve business or consumer problems in Nigeria.

Last year, Jumia partnered with MTN to provide a pan-African version of the competition to offer entrepreneurs a chance to secure N1million for their business.

In 2019, the Bank of Industry (BOI) launched an empowerment program aimed at equipping young and talented entrepreneurs looking to start their own business. BOI seeks to fund these business ideas through its Youth Entrepreneurship Support (YES) Programme.

Through the YES programme, young people will be equipped with the requisite skills and knowledge to be self-employed so they can start and manage their own businesses.

To be eligible for the YES Programme, you must;

Be a Nigerian.
Own a viable business or business idea within the 40 identified operational clusters or will operate in Nigeria.
Be within the ages of 18 and 35.
Possess proof of identity: International passport/Drivers License/National ID/Voters card required.
Possess at least an educational qualification of Ordinary National Diploma (OND).
Be able to carry out the application process online.

If selected, you will undergo an Eight ( week intensive online Entrepreneurship and Business Management training as well as a Five (5) days in-class Entrepreneurship and Business Management training.

A total of 3,356 beneficiaries will receive the first batch of NIRSAL Microfinance Bank CBN N50bn COVID-19 Loan. The Funds is part of a stimulus package to support households and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, MSMEs, to cushion the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Stimulus package will be disbursed by NIRSAL Microfinance Bank after obtaining final approval for each loan request from CBN. The package will help entrepreneurs to restart businesses affected by the COVID-19. On a larger scale, The CBN hope to restart the countries economy through these initiatives.

Who is eligible?

Eligibility for the loan is simple and has been broken down into categories

Households:Families with proof of the negative effect of COVID-19 pandemic on their livelihood.
Microenterprises: Small businesses with proof of how business activities were adversely by the COVID-19 pandemic.
SME: Enterprises with bankable plans to take advantage of opportunities arising from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Households can assess a maximum of N3 million while, SMEs based on their activity, cashflow, and industry/segment size of beneficiary can receive a maximum of N25million.

The interest rates on this loan under the intervention is 5% p.a. (all inclusive) up to 28th February 2021 and thereafter, the interest on the facility will revert to 9% p.a. (all inclusive) as from 1st March 2021.

Visit NIRSAL Microfinance Bank on www.nmfb.com and click on COVID-19 support page.
Click on the category that suits your application (Household, Microenterprise or SME.
Fill in Your Personal Details and follow the rest of the steps.
Submit your application along with your evidence.

After these, the bank will review your application and forward your application to CBN for final approval.  CBN will review your application and consequently give final approval for disbursement of funds to NMFB.

Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi state has ordered the immediate suspension of the collection of Personal Income Tax and other illegal revenues from markets by revenue agents in the state.

Gov Umahi took the decision yesterday at the Town Hall meeting which held at the Pa Oruta Ngele Stadium Abakaliki.

Umahi also ordered the suspension of all forms of revenue collection in the local government areas in the state till further notice.

The governor gave the directive following complaints from market women in the Ebonyi state, through their leader, Mrs Akoji Agnes, of illegal revenue collections by some fraudsters and illegal revenue collectors in the State.

He also directed that no levy or tax should be collected from women selling vegetables and other perishables in the open market.

“All these women who don’t have shops and who are selling vegetables, nobody should collect any tax or levy from them again.”
According to him, those who have stalls or shops in any market in the state should pay only the consolidated revenue agreed by the state government with leaders of various markets in the state.

He regretted that fraudsters have capitalized on the ignorance of the people on the harmonised consolidated revenue to defraud traders and landlords in the state.

He further directed the Deputy Governor, Kelechi Igwe to set up a committee on revenue to hold a meeting with market women, traders, council chairmen, traditional rulers and other stakeholders to come up with acceptable revenues they are to be paid over a certain period of time.

Ebonyians have trooped out to express their joy over the suspension of the operations of Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIO) from mounting roadblocks within the state capital.

Officials of the VIO were banned after they threw obstacles into the path of a water tanker causing the tanker driver to lose control and crash.

The incident which took place at the Akanu Ibiam Roundabout was frowned upon by the Ebonyi State Government.

The SSA to Governor on Security Dr Kenneth Ugbala who told journalists about the ban said

"following public complaints, the activities of the Vehicle Inspection Officers are hereby banned within Abakaliki Metropolis"

A cross-section of Ebonyians who aired their thoughts said that the VIO officials were better classified as touts due to the uncultured and uncivilized way they carry out their duties.

The Commandant of NSCDC in Ebonyi State, Chinwe Kanu said that no one was killed in the incident but stressed that the VIO officials need to be properly enlighted especially on the limits of their job.
She confirmed the arrest of the VIO officials involved in the incident and said that they will be made to face the law.

Once upon a time, we would rush out at the sound of human click sounds – imitating the very fascinating Zulu ‘X’ sound -  and the accompanying moo. It was interesting to watch how little petite very handsome curly haired Fulani boys controlled these gigantic white sluggish mammals with horns; Ah Yes, the horns! That they valued the life of the animals under their charge didn’t really stir up debates. Instead, we were impressed with their smooth carved crosiers; along with the little daggers they wore around their waists like Navy Seals in full combat gear. Also, very inspiring was the idea that these little dark handsome curly-haired bundles of calm confronted wild beasts in the wild regularly with their daggers to protect their mammalian wards.

I suppose the wild beasts in the wild grew more ferocious for soon, during the harmattan when the human click sounds accompanied by the moo passed by, in the stead of daggers we saw machetes, not on their waists but held on their hands seemingly nonchalantly but at a ready. Then we heard on the news that they now carried rifles to protect themselves and their charge from the ever-evolving dangers of the wild. Logically following this projection, soon they may need RPGs and grenades and the likes and, in a few years, when the issue of Nigeria comes up at the UN General Assembly, President Trump and Kim of North Korea will have to shut up because their quarrel will be petite in comparison.

Collectively, from the developing world of Europe and North America to the underdeveloped of South America, some of the far and middle east and indeed Africa, we have all managed to make a pleasant mockery of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. All other inalienable rights every human is entitled to just by being alive is pinged on the right to life. To pull off the hinge is to render quite redundant the door functionality of a door. If only humans beings who are alive are referred to as humans – dead ones are referred to as bodies or corpse -, and If every other right of a human is only valid because that human is alive, It therefore logically follows that by the wanton disregard and disrespect for the dignity of human life, so passionately and fantastically exhibited throughout the world today, we all have passively and actively destroyed the hinge on which all other rights revolve.

Ironically, while this rubbishing of all Human Rights in other climes have some sort of not justifiable in any sense but at least dignified push behind it, Nigeria chose to align herself with the less dignified kind of genocidal tendency; -  the ones that have an undertone reference to animals. Nigeria is proudly in the company of the likes of the Rwandan genocide – with their Cockroaches reference; but since we are the giant of Africa, why not choose a more gigantic animal – say Cows? Just why not? As if that is not enough disgrace, families and border communities continue to deprive people of their right to life in Ebonyi state over land disputes and sundry matters, the Izzis and Ukelles are killing themselves over something that happened before they were born; then kidnappers, cultists, ritualists, careless officers of the law, robbers – both armed and not, mob action/jungle justice and herdsmen graciously join in compounding the situation for us.

It is remarkable to read a leader make a subtle comparison between the life of cattle and the life of a human being. The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders’ Association of Nigeria elusively said that the murder of more than a hundred innocent persons in Plateau State was a reprisal attack for cattle rustling in the town and even threatened -  sorry, cautioned that there would be no peace in the area because of this great crime against humanity – cattle rustling. With great deference to his fundamental human right to speech and opinion, how dare he make a subtle defence of the inhumane murder of human beings right in their houses and compare it to the killing and rustling of cows, and even daring to justify his stance by saying there will be no peace. And of course, just like clockwork, Nigeria reacted. And this is what I have a problem with.

Whilst we moan, whimper, sniff and scream about the evolving tactics of protection employed by these curly haired shepherds, why is the government and security agencies tasked with the simple duty of protecting and securing lives of Nigerian Humans, not livestock, not learning from their positive cum negative - depending on your perspective - flux of protection? Or is that asking for too much from agencies whose sole task is securing our lives?  Why can’t we learn to value human life like they value cow life? The curly-haired handsome fellows are being proactive while the rest of us – citizens, security agencies and indeed the political class/elected government are impressively reactive.

Soon after the news of the mass killing broke, the federal government as usual condemned the attack and as usual promised to bring the perpetrators to justice, and as usual promised to prevent a recurrence, members of the ruling and political class issued statements condemning the attack, the Nigerian Air Force deployed a Mi-35P combat helicopter and an Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) aircraft to Plateau State, the Commissioner of Police was replaced, and of course social activists protested and were as usual harassed by security agents. The impressive list of reactions goes on and on and on and all combined does absolutely nothing to comfort the grieving in Plateau State, resurrect those potentials cut short who just happened to be on the wrong end of a bullet or a machete, or even from experience prevent a recurrence.

Human Rights are not passive, they are active. They are neither good nor bad, they just are. They are beyond the scope of morals or ethics or religion or I dare say even human judgement. Since their conferment is not reactive or a result of any human effort or dependent on any human factor, it is safe to aver that the drive to safeguard them be commensurate. Like the developing world, think-tanks and intelligence agencies should come up with -if they do not have already- operational preventive plans and measures for all foreseeable conflicts and attacks that are proactive; and if they cannot, they should bloody well say so, so that we can task persons both within and without our social entity to do so.

We cannot continue to wait for attacks to claim innocent lives and then go on a show of force to quell reprisal attacks or prevent the emotionally wounded to express their natural emotional frustration and revenge tendency. The hurt and will result in a vicious circle of attacks and counter attacks that can breed hate and, well it just goes downhill from there. While the hypocrisy of persons, especially Christians rejoicing over reprisal attacks is glaring, it is also emotionally understandable but outrightly condemned. The murder of Zayyan Gwandu, son of the Commissioner of SARS – Haliru Gwandu Abubakar, for example, is not only crazy but also senseless and irrational; and would remain this way until someone convinces me that he was among the group of first attackers. And even after then, it would be illegal to deprive him of his right to life haphazardly without due recourse to legal procedure. One can understand the lack of faith in the security and legal system in Nigeria as one of the major reasons why mob action and unjust jungle justice is prevalent.

Also, professional conflict resolution experts should be employed to help intervene in these cases and their recommendations are implemented.

Ebonyi State Governor Engr. David Umahi has called out the past governor of Ebonyi State Martin Elechi accusing him of trying to sabotage his administration.

The Governor said this in Nguzu Edda during a grand reception by the people of Afikpo South. The Event was also used to adopt the Governor as the sole candidate of PDP in the 2019 elections.

The Governor said that ex-Governor Martin Election asked his cohorts to stop his attempt to build a ring road that will still beneift Elechi

“Somebody from the south made efforts to build a ring road that is passing the front of the house of the former Governor, He now asked people to go to court and stop it”

“They are boasting that they are from the Federal Government, that they will write results. Anyone that wants to write results should first write his will”

On the issue of Ebonyi South Senatorial zone, Governor Umahi said

“I want to declare that there is vacancy in the Senatorial seat of Ebonyi South”

Governor Umahi promised the people that the State Government will take over the construction of road from Ekoli to Okagwe in Abia State.

Governor Umahi in a visit to Ohaukwu LGA, disclosed that stories going round saying that he has no pact with Senator Puis Anyim in which he is expected to handover to Senator Anyim after 4 years is false.

He further disclosed that he intends to stay for another 4 year tenure in office.

The resignation/sack of the ex-SSG Prof Ben Odoh was continued to attract responses from various quaters.

Commissioners serving under the administration of the State Governor, Engr. David Nweze Umahi, have condemned the tone and content of the purported resignation letter tendered by the former Secretary to the State Government, Professor Benard Odoh on a public holiday.
The Meeting which took place at the International Conference Centre, Abakaliki was held to deliberate the contents of the letter.

Speaking during the meeting, the Commissioner for Information and State Orientation, Senator Emmanuel Onwe, explained that all the commissioners have unanimously disassociated themselves from the negative tendencies which stated that the members of the state executive council were not happy with the way the government under Engr. David Nweze Umahi operates.

He assured the state Governor that the all commissioners would continue to demonstrate their loyalty and commitment to his administration.
Others who attended the meeting including the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Cletus Ofoke and his Local Government Chieftaincy Matters and the Commissioner for Rural development, Chief Samuel Okoronkwo said the former SSG's resignation was not acceptable as it was tendered on a public holiday and described the action as a betrayal to the Administration.

Other groups such as the Ebonyi State Chapter of the NLC, former government appointees have reacted to the claims made by the former SSG describing it as false.

The Ebonyi state government has announced that it will commence the registration of Ebonyi youths who were misled into joining the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB.

This was revealed in a press briefing by the state Commissioner for Economic Empowerment and Job Creation, Uchenna Orji, He said the state government will commence data capturing and registration of IPOB members who denounce the group and apart from pursuing the action plan of making the IPOB members economically independent and the initiative would also help in reducing social vices and enable the members to contribute positively.

He said:
“The IPOB youths are being registered in the Department of Education and Social Welfare in the LGAs. After the capture, the state government will create a programme to train and empower them in their chosen career .”

The commissioner further disclosed that the government had extended its empowerment schemes to Ebonyi youths in other states of the federation, including Sokoto, Kaduna, Anambra and Lagos, added that over 3000 youths had so far been empowered in the state.

The Federal Government had earlier labelled IPOB as a terrorist group, a move which has been attacked from all corners by foreign governments.

Following the havoc wrecked by Hurricane Mariathat on Dominican island, President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered the immediate evacuation of Nigerian students in the island.
Nigerian students who attend medical schools in Dominican Island were stranded after the hurricane hit the island.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has commenced preparations following the president’s directive. They disclosed that a senior official has been assigned to handle the travel process of the students.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity Mallam Garba Shehu confirm the president’s order stating that the president was deeply touched by their loss. He revealed that the students will be moved to brazil for onward evacuation to Nigeria.

Hurricane Mariathat has been ranked a Category 4 storm and has sustained winds of up to 250km/hr making it the strongest storm to hit a US territory in 90 years.

Following a court ruling requesting a country-wide notice to Nigerians on the toxicity of fanta and spirit, the Ebonyi State Government has issued a state-wide warning to NBC, requesting them to withdraw all such products within 7 days and only return after they have met the newly set conditions set by the court. The further warned its citizens to stay away from

A Nigerian court had ordered the National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to instruct the Nigeria Bottling Company (NBC) Plc. manufacturers of Fanta and Sprite to warn consumers of the danger of taking it with vitamin c.

According to reports, Justice Adedayo Oyebanji, of the Lagos High Court gave this order following a suit against NBC by Fijabi.


Fijabi’s counsel Abiodun Onidare told the court that his client bought large quantities of different products from NBC for export to the United Kingdom but on arrived at their destination, Fanta and Sprite failed UK Health Authorities’ sample test for human consumption, as the beverages became poisonous when mixed with Vitamin C(Ascorbic Acid).
