SportsRe: Rashidi Yekini:: Condolence Register by edetcnn(m): 11:42pm On May 05, 2012
FOR RASHIDI ...

I started this piece as a short tribute to Rashidi, but after reading through it when I finished writing, I felt a tinge of satisfaction that I was able to sneak in a requiem for Nigeria.

You know who I am talking about. There can only be one Rashidi that every Nigerian knows, and all other African soccer teams dreaded.

Yes, we "know" him, because Rashidi can never be "past-tensed" in our minds. Not as long as TV and recordable digital media exists. Slot in a DVD, or tune in to a channel years from now, you will see him on your screen; those gangling long legs, the giant physique, the energy and raw power, the almost apelike mien - did you expect me to say he is an Adonis now that he is dead...?

I can't remember him smile after scoring.
I can't say he was as fast, spectacular, or skilful as a striker should be, If we consider the likes of Eto, et al.
But he was Africa's goal-king.
The best there was; maybe ever, if we do a critical analysis that will factor-in the improved conditions and facilities available to contemporary football players today.

There can only be one Rashidi, even in Africa.

I will never forget coming back from school during one of the Tunisia 94 African cup of nations Matches. I was still at the corridor, and the whole premises was empty with not a nary sound except snippets of the commentary from TV sets, when I heard a commentator's voice (can't remember now whether it was from a TV or radio):

"Goooooooooooooooooooooooaaaaaaaaaaaaalllllll!!!!
It is a Goooooooooooooooooooooooaaaaaaaaaaaaalllllll!!!!
Heeee has done it agaaaaaaaaaaaaaaiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiinnnnn!!!!
Rashiiiiiidiiiiiiiiii Yekinniiiiiiiiiiiiiii!!
What a goaaaaaal!
What a plaaaaayeeeeeeeeeeeeeer!!"
And then the hitherto deserted premises miraculously erupted with people, as everyone rushed out from their apartments into courtyard in delirious celebration.

I bet you, by next week, the government will set-up a committee to suggest ways to immortalise him. And by next month will engage consultants to implement the Immortalization committee's em, em is that communique again? Then next year, they (government) will award the Multi-million Naira Rashidi Yekini memorial project contract ...

VIVA NIGERIA! A COUNTRY THAT DOES NOT VALUE ITS HEROES!!

Now, tell me why stopping the savage em, em (take your pick between "pogrom" and "genocide" but don't call it anything less until you first check your dictionary for the meaning of the two words I suggested) of hapless unarmed human beings by Islamic Fundamentalists (whose sponsors are known) in present day Northern Nigeria will be a priority; when there are still billions of Petro-dollars to be stolen by government officials and their political cronies?

This was meant to be a short tribute to a great man, but see what the Nigerian government and political class, can turn an ordinarily quiet, mourning young man like me to ...

I may not have the voice or a mic, but I can still type ...

"WHAT A GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAALLLL!
WHAT A PLAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRR!"

Adieu Rashidi Yekini
Adieu, the one and only Ye-king!

A TRIBUTE TO WHITNEY AND FOR MYSELF, IF ONE DAY ,

If you have ever been in d grip of something that makes you relegate your humanity and mortality to the background for what on a clear eye day, you will characterize as momentary madness. Something that makes you feel ashamed of your maturity and Christianity moments after the flash of ecstasy clears; something that makes you shed secret tears and beg God every night to help save you from yourself; something that you seem to have no control over, drawing you, even when you know that each indulgence makes you despicable in the eyes of the public and brings you closer to your grave; You will know never to criticize Whitney Houston.

The Bible says it is not of him that willeth nor runeth but of the Lord that showeth mercy. If you have never lighted a cigarette, smoked a joint, sniffed a line, or stayed glued on the screen with your hands in your pants, I want you to go down on your knees after reading this and thank God for being merciful to you.

WE are doctors, pastors, true Christians, lawyers, superstars, high-IQ individuals but , God knows why we were caught up in what we are caught up in. I make no excuses. I hold no brief BUT I shed a tear for Whitney, and I have earned the right to call her by her first name.

I am a private individual so I can only imagine what pressure she must have felt, trying to keep up to the image of a public saint while struggling with the conscience of a private sinner. And you can't know this if you have never gone to church high and the pastor mentions your name at the altar as a paragon of virtue when you got a list of whores (literarily) in your phone book. Some people survive the same, or even more fatal wounds that others die of. Does it make the fallen lesser mortals or the survivors higher mortals. Indeed we can never know.

To those whose lives are pure enough to give them the power to condemned the fallen, especially those in the public eye, De gustibus non est disputandum. Do not condemn what you don't know!

Adieu Whitney! I will always remember you for your voice, and the joy that your music brought to us.

PoliticsRe: Boko Haram Claims 5 Bombings by edetcnn(m): 4:57pm On Dec 25, 2011
I am angry, sad, disgusted, sick,, and every true human being should be.

Today, I challenge everyone who calls him or her self a Nigerian, especially those who call themselves, the leaders of this contraption of a country, which by God's grace will soon unravel to pause and consider what will happen if a mosque, ANY mosque, in this so-called Nigeria, is bombed during Ramadan ,

My stomach churns in disgust when I try to imagine the terms " President" and Goodluck Jonathan" together. Someone who wants to remove oil subsidy in 2012 because it is a waste on the national resources, is at the same breath, budgeting 280 MILLION NAIRA for TWO bullet proof cars, and ONE BILLION NAIRA for MEALS in the presidency.

The Clouds are gathering Mr. Jonathan, or whatever you call yourself, and I feel very bad because I played a part in today's problems , by voting for you!

RomanceRe: -- by edetcnn(m): 8:08pm On Nov 27, 2011
I just skimmed this thread to see what the comments will look like expecting to get some good old classic NL comedy. I think that "heartbreak" is one of the most misused terms in English. I am just getting into my 30s but I have avoided going back to a particular town (where my parents still stay) for 2 years now cos I don't want the sympathetic stares, and comments of folks. By God's grace, I am doing ok; comfortable apartment, self employed, etc but I still feel mad when folks say stuff like " c'mon dude, you should get over her by now, she has proven she's not worth it, besides there are a lot of babes out there who will give an arm, " Breakups are very different from heartbreaks. And because, no relationship breakup is pleasant, folks assume that every breakup is a heartbreak. You can get over a heartbreak but you remain scarred for a very long time. And I can tell you cos I had a 4 yr r/ship. The trust got to a point that when I travel, I divert my calls to her phone .(and please if u think that's too trusting, we are talking about someone I have already formally introduced to my folks and vice versa). We were even choosing wedding card designs and color themes , It's over 2 years now, and I still declined all wedding/marriage related Invites until last month, and I never stay for up to 20 minutes,

PoliticsRe: Corruption In Nigeria Is Cultural And Not Political by edetcnn(m): 9:15pm On Oct 27, 2011
The corruption among public office holders is in no small measure, caused by the same public who accuse these officials of being corrupt! I recently honoured an invitation to present one of my projects to an old friend who is now in government! As early as 7:45 am when I got there, the crowd I saw at the premises will make some self-ordained pastors green with envy - with hawkers of gala, recharge cards, pure water, etc. From my observation while waiting to see him, 99% of the crowd just came to solicit for one form of financial assistance if not outright cash handouts. Now, if we are honest with ourselves, with these much expectations and pressure, why are we now accusing them of corruption when we are the ones that instigate the corruption in the first place? May God help us all. Amen!
BusinessRe: Failure To Remove Fuel Subsidy Will Lead To Economy Collapse – GEJ by edetcnn(m): 9:53pm On Oct 25, 2011
I once overheard someone say that the problem with most great men is that they don't always die at their best. Most of them live too long and at some point in their later years make mistakes which always outlive their accomplishments. Somebody should please help me tell THIS GUY that started this fuel subsidy removal nonsense (without showing any visible attempt to fix our 4 perpetually moribund refineries) that I am begging him to go inside, lie down, and quietly die!!!

BusinessNigeria To Invest Us$2.68 Billion In Indonesian Refinery Deal by edetcnn(op): 12:21am On Oct 13, 2011
Nigeria to invest Rp 24t in Indonesian refinery deal
The Jakarta Post | Wed, 10/12/2011 2:19 PM A | A | A |
Nigeria plans to invest Rp 24 trillion (US$2.68 billion) in Indonesia to fund the construction of three oil refineries, an official says.

The Industry Ministry's director general for manufacturing-based industry, Panggah Susanto, was quoted by kompas.com as saying that both countries had agreed to build the refineries in Indonesia.

Nigeria, which produces 2.6 million barrels of oil per day (bpd), was looking for a partner to refine its crude oil, Panggah said.

"Previously they wanted the refineries to be built in Nigeria," he said Tuesday. "However, as Indonesia is currently improving its downstream industry, Indonesia wanted the refineries to be built here instead."

The refineries, which are projected to produce 300 bpd each, will be used to process crude oil from Nigeria.

"State firm PT Pertamina will buy the crude oil from Nigeria and process it here," he said.

It is unfortunate when the government that is championing youths cause, steals ideas from the same youths without crediting them. They couldn't even change the logo! So much for YOUTHS INTEREST! Pls Check http://www.studentsenterprise.com/?f and see for yourself how "Government" Hijacked an Idea that some struggling youths were pitching to them and corporate organizations for sponsorship. Okonjo Iweala and Goodluck may not know the origin of the Ideas but the owners of the project posted it on the Youth Ministry's Facebook page sometime in August. Curiuosly, that post has been deleted. The Goodluck Administration is one huge joke!
