The Catholic Diocese of Orlu, is in the news again, albeit for the wrong reason. One of its priests, Rev. Fr. Jude Chidi Egbom, was gruesomely murdered by armed hoodlums. This happened when the Local Ordinary, Most Rev. Augustine Tochukwu Ukwuoma, was attending a meeting of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria, CBCN, in far away Sokoto State.

The sad thing is that there had been previous dastardly killing of priests of the Catholic Diocese of Orlu. The most recent was that of Rev. Fr. Cyriacus Onunkwo, who came home from his base, to bury his father. Tragically, the priest was killed, even before he finished arranging for his father’s burial. The Diocese grieved as father and son were buried.



The ever smiling, gap-toothed Fr. Egbom was until his untimely death, the Parish Priest of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Amucha in Njaba Local Council Area of Imo State.

Amucha is the ancestral home parish of the Catholic Bishop of Orlu, and a shouting distance away from Nkwerre, the home of community of so many notables in the state.
As the news of Fr. Egbom’s death spread like wild fire, so also were the versions weaved around his death.

One of the tales had it that the priest was on his way back to his parish, when he ran into armed robbers, who were operating at the time, and the hoodlums pumped hot lead in his direction. This silenced him on the spot.
Another story surrounding his death was hinged on what another group termed “pure assassination.” An obviously very angry priest, who spoke to South-East Voice on telephone last Saturday, on the issue, blamed his death on “possible hired assassins.”


Although the priest neither mentioned any name or linked the alleged assassination on his homilies, he, however, expressed serious pain over the loss of another brother priest to triger-happy gangsters operating in Imo.
“Nigeria has a way of handling its investigations. We have been told that about two persons have been arrested in connection with the murder of the priest. Did the nabbed suspects do the planning and execution alone? Do they have sponsors? If yes, who are they? Will they be identified, nabbed, paraded like these ones and prosecuted? The questions begging for answers are many and varied”, the cleric said.

Other peddlers of this assassination angle of the story, preferred linking the priest’s murder to the alleged strong position he held in the past, against some of the actions and policies of the government of the day. Despite all efforts, South-East Voice could not confirm this from any parishioner or priest, before going to press.



The third version is that the late Fr. Egbom was said to have driven to his barber’s shop at the popular Amaokpara Junction by Amaigbo Road in Nkwerre, to have a hair cut.

It was also said that after the hair cut and just as he was about entering his car, an unknown gunman from nowhere emerged, shot him several times on the chest and disappeared.
This third version, appears to be what the Imo State Police Command believes in, especially as it was also narrated in a different prose, by the State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Dasuki Galadanchi, when he paraded the two suspected killers of the Catholic priest at the State Police Headquarters, Owerri.


His words: “On September 10, 2018, the Command received the report of the robbery and killing of Rev. Fr. Jude Egbom, the Parish Priest of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Amucha, Njaba Local Government Area of Imo State.

“The hoodlums invaded a barbing salon at Umuka Nkwerre and demanded the keys of one Toyota Avalon and Camry cars, parked in front of the barbing salon and in the process, shot sporadically, killing the Rev. Priest and injuring another victim.



“In a swift reaction by operatives of the Federal SARS, Imo Command, two suspects involved in the dastardly act were arrested. They are Chigozie Uzoukwu, male, aged 33 and a native of Umusieke, Owerri Nkworji, Nkwerre Local Government Area and Peter Boniface Ochokwu, male, aged 21, and from Umuibu, Owerri Nkworji, Nkwerre Local Government Area.

“They are members of the gang that have been terrorising Nkwerre Local Government Area and its environs in recent times.

“The Reverend Father’s vehicle and the vehicle used by the hoodlums have been recovered from the suspects. Other members of the gang, who are on the run, are being hunted by the team of investigators,” the CP recounted.

Continuing, Mr. Galadanchi itemised the recovered exhibits to include one black Toyota Corolla with registration number, FKJ 984 EV, used by the hoodlums for the operation, and one Toyota Avalon car with registration number RLU 369 AE, belonging to the murdered priest.

“The police also recovered one locally made shotgun from Kelechi Nnajiuba, two travelling bags containing shoes, clothes and other personal effects, suspected to belong to the slain Rev. Father, as well as 46 Permanent Voter’s Cards, recovered from Chigozie Uzoukwu,” the CP said.

Nigerian Pop star, Tiwa Savage, has shut down the allegations that American singer, Ciara sampled her song without permission.

It will be recalled that When Ciara released ‘Freak Me’, her Tekno-assisted single, all hell broke loose on Nigerian social media over alleged song theft and unapproved sampling of Tiwa Savage’s ‘Before Nko’.
But addressing the matter plainly for the first time, the Nigerian superstar says she had foreknowledge of the sampling.

Savage said her representatives spoke to Ciara’s camp, inferring that they reached an understanding on the usage of the song.
In an interview with Capital Xtra’s Tim Westwood, Savage described ‘Freak Me’ as a pleasant surprise.

She said: “It’s amazing. It’s an honour. I knew she was going to sample the record.
“Her people had spoken to my people but I didn’t hear the final product until it came out but it was a pleasant surprise. Big shout out to her.”
Savage also spoke about her upcoming collaboration with Coldplay, and how it came to be.

She said: “They have a record with Stargate and it kinda has like an Afrobeat influence in it and I already worked with Stargate on a couple of records, so they wanted a female vocal on it, so here I am.
“When I was in the studio with Chris Martin, he was so cool. I was so nervous. He made it so easy.”

The singer said her collaboration with Duncan Mighty, ‘Lova Lova’, is currently her favourite song, adding that “I knew it was a big record when I recorded it”.
The Afrobeats star also touched on the inequality suffered by women in the music industry, noting that it is not limited to Nigeria.
“I think it’s all over the world actually. I have heard other female acts from America, the UK talk about how hard it is,” Savage said.

She said songs by male artistes find quick acceptance on the radio as opposed to those recorded by female singers.
“I think it’s a lot easier to accept male artist’s songs,” the ‘All Over’ singer said. “On radio, it gets played quicker. Sometimes, I feel like some records when I have male artistes on it, is accepted a lot quicker.”

Few days after a Lagos State politician was accused of fleeing after stealing the manhood of a security guard, another man has been arrested on the same allegation.

An Instagram user identified with the handle @sleeq2dabone, has taken to the social networking platform to share the video and story of a man who was caught after being accused of stealing a man’s manhood in Lagos.



The incident happened ealier today close to the popular Amala HotSpot in Omole Phase2.
It was gathered that the suspect was apprehended when a bike man raised an alarm that his manhood disappeared after the suspect touched him.

Offcials of the Nigerian Police were promptly called in to arrest the suspect to save him from jungle justice.



The eyewitness who shared the video and story online, wrote: “Be vigilant guys! It’s election period and a lot of bizarre things are happening. Just a few minutes ago, a bike man’s manhood disappeared after being touched by some random guy right in front of my office.

“Thank God for my intervention and that of those around. The culprit has been handed over to the police. Please spread the information to your loved ones. We are protected in Jesus name.

A man has taken to Twitter to narrate how he abandoned his wife and kids then moved in with a woman he met for the first time and it has made him go viral.

The national electronic identity card can be used to withdraw, do other financial transactions including paying bills, the National Identity Management Commission has told Nigerians.

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), says that the national electronic identity card can be used for money transactions and other national benefits.

Mr Loveday Ogbonna, Head, Corporate Communications, said this in an interview with newsmenon Wednesday in Abuja.

Ogbonna said that the National e-ID Card, which combines a proof of identity and access to financial services, would make it possible for Nigerians to receive a universally accepted identity card.

According to him, it will enable Nigerians gain access to formal financial services.

“The card at the point of collection if activated could be used for financial transaction around the world and even on any master card platform, verve and others.

“There is a provision in the system that enables you to load any amount of money you want into the card through ATM or POS.

“The bank we are using now is UBA, other banks will still come on board and at the point of collecting the card, the payment outlet is activated to enable you use it for financial transaction.

“Money can be paid into that card and money can also be withdrawn on any ATM anywhere around the world.

“You can also make purchase online, subscribe for DSTV, POS payment, and check balance and others.

“All you need do is to approach any UBA bank and request them to load the card with any amount of money that you want,’ ’ he said.

Ogbonna also said that the commission was collaborating with other relevant agencies or organisations to have a central data collection point as directed by the Vice president.

He noted that the integration of relevant agencies in the data collection would enhance proper documentation and reduce stress for the people.

“The directive is to get all data collection agencies to integrate data so that one does not need to give his or her biometrics to different government organisations.

“Every other government agencies is allowed to collect data and then send to the NIMC department for identity database.

“But the agencies are also allowed to do their functional assignments, we are not stopping them.

“What NIMC is established to do is foundational identity and that is to be done in collaboration with Nigerian Population Commission (NPC) and other agencies like CBN,’’ he said.

Nigerian rapper cum actor, Folarin Falana popularly referred to by stage name, Falz the bahd guy, has declared that he will always make controversial music and for the record, his next album won’t be eluded.

A couple were arrested on Monday night after they allegedly dumped the body of their suffocated six-month-old baby boy on a Bangkok soi in front of the home of the wife’s mother.


The husband, Witthawat Jitthanopajai, 21, also faced murder charges for allegedly suffocating the son by a previous marriage of his wife, Kanchana Thetsawang, 22.

The baby’s body was found in a basket left in front of the house of Kanchana’s mother on Soi Pracha Uthit 19 in Huay Kwang district at 10am on Sunday.


After learning the baby was Kanchana’s son, the police tracked down and arrested the couple at 10pm on Monday at their rented room at an apartment building in Pathum Thani’s Thanyaburi district.


Kanchana told police her son was born during a previous marriage, but she had remarried after her first husband died about six months ago.
Kanchana said she had left the baby with Witthawat, an Army private, when she left home to work and came back to find that her son had died.
Witthawat told police that when the baby cried, he had wrapped him in a blanket, put him under a pillow and laid down on top of the baby. He said he fell asleep and woke up to find the baby had died.

The couple said they did not know what to do, and so took a taxi to leave the baby in front of the house of Kanachana’s mother.
