The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, has said the National Campaign Against Fake News has received a boost from the Social Networking Platform, Facebook, which plans to partner with the Federal Government to check the menace.

The Minister announced the planned cooperation in Abuja today, Tuesday October 9th when he visited Daar Communications, owners of AIT and Raypower, in furtherance of the campaign. He said the national campaign, which was launched on 11th July 2018, has succeeded in bringing the phenomenon to the front burner of national discourse.

“We are not under any illusion that our campaign will immediately end the menace of fake news. But we know that by creating national awareness, we are putting the issue of fake news on the front burner.

Fake news is now a subject of national discourse, workshops and conferences. In the coming days, the social networking web platform, Facebook, will be meeting with us and other top policy makers across the country in the days ahead to see how to assist us in fighting fake news. That, to us, is a major step forward, and we thank all our partners, and indeed all Nigerians, for this achievement'' Mohammed said.

The Minister, who described fake news as a global phenomenon, said different countries are adopting various measures to tackle the menace, but said Nigeria has decided to appeal to the sense of responsibility of media practitioners, bloggers and Social Media Influencers, instead of engaging in coercion or censorship.

He said if left unchecked, fake news has the capacity to disrupt the peace and unity of the country and it’s also a clear and present danger to the nation’s democracy.

“For example, the fake news phenomenon played out during the recent governorship elections in Osun State. Whereas 16 PDP members were arrested for various offences, including impersonating observers and for violence during the rerun, the purveyors of fake news made it look as if the APC was the perpetrators of these crimes. Also, a few days ago, fake news about the release of Leah Sharibu circulated freely on the social media.

Imagine the additional trauma this would have caused for the parents. Imagine the implication on efforts to secure her release, and indeed the national security implications'' Mohammed said.
He said the campaign against fake news could not have come at a better time, considering that the 2019 general elections are fast approaching and enemies of democracy will latch on to it to wreak havoc.

A Nigerian woman, Stella Ogonna Okpaleke, has committed suicide after her shop was locked up by the authorities of the market where she sold her goods in Ghana.

Recall that last month the shops of some Nigerians were locked up by Ghanaian authorities over their inability to meet strict trading conditions set up by the government. The Ghanaian authority says traders must have one million dollars as minimum foreign investment capital to do business in Ghana as stipulated in its Ministry of Trade and Industry Act, 2013.

The National Association of Nigerian Traders (NANTs), Ghana Chapter, disclosed the death of Stella Okpaleke today when the leadership visited the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, Mrs Abike Dabiri-Erewa, to seek the intervention of President Muhammadu Buhari on the matter.
Nnaji, armed with a petition to Buhari, called for the intervention of the Federal Government over the alleged maltreatment of Nigerian businessmen in Ghana.

“Regrettably on Saturday, Sept. 22, one of our female members, Mrs Stella Ogonna Okpaleke, whose shop has been under lock and key by the Ghana authority committed suicide. She committed suicide based on her shop and that of her husband that were locked. The information we gathered was that when they locked the shop, she lost hope of reopening it. She is from Nnewi Local Government (Area) in Anambra. We actually don’t know how much she owed, but we learnt that she took loan for her business” he said.

Nnaji noted that the harassment on the Nigerian community and traders in Kumasi, Ghana by authorities in the country, is so severe and unbecoming.
“It is unfortunate that that very woman decided to take her own life,” Nnaji said and called on Buhari to urgently intervene to avert similar incidents in the future.

Responding to his comments, Dabiri-Erewa expressed the Federal Government’s condolences to the union and the family of the deceased. She appealed to members of the union to remain calm and assured them that the president would intervene in their case to ensure a lasting solution to the problem.

“I am just going to start by appealing to you, I know it is painful, it is emotional, it is deep but I just urge you to remain calm. I appeal to you to remain calm and may the soul of Stella rest in perfect peace. When she is about to be buried, let us know so that we may send our condolence message to the family,” she said.

So I almost lost my life...I’m still in shock. So I was in a taxi headed to ikeja. We got to Osborne road I noticed the cab driver’s mouth was wide open and he was pointing at me. In my mind I was like ok he stammers. I stutter as Well so no biggie. I was eating my salad and waiting for him to finish his sentence..next thing something foam like started coming out from his mouth.

Everyone drove past except a woman that parked behind us but was too scared to alight from her vehicle. Thank God for the RRS stationed by deputy gov’s house. They helped resuscitate the driver. The trio — Odey, 35; Isha, 25; and Jonathan, 30 — is being tried for conspiracy, robbery and stealing at an Ikeja Magistrates’

The Magistrate, Mrs F.F. George, who refused to take the plea of the accused, said they should be kept behind bars pending
advice from the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

The accused committed the offences on Aug. 24 at Isheri-Berger on the outskirts of Lagos, the Police Prosecutor, Sgt. Godwin
Awase told the court.

He said the accused, armed with guns and other dangerous weapons, robbed Mr Abidemi Gbadega of his car and other belongings.

“The accused robbed the complainant of his Toyota Corolla saloon car valued at N2.8 million, three phones, a laptop, gold necklace
and N530,000, totalling N3.3 million”

Awase said the accused stopped the complainant’s car by blocking it with a plank before robbing him.

“The accused stopped the complainant, pointed gun at him and commanded him to surrender his valuables or be killed.

“The complainant complied for fear of the unknown while the accused drove off the car with the items in the car.

“The case was reported to the police and the accused were arrested when they were about to sell the car to a buyer,” the prosecutor said.

The offences violated Sections 287, 296 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Section 287 prescribes three jail term for stealing while Section 296 stipulates
21 years for armed robbery.

The case was adjourned until Oct.10 for mention.
