Kano, Nigeria – The Federal Government has allocated over ₦80 billion for the comprehensive renovation of more than 100 Unity Schools across Nigeria, according to the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Said Ahmad.

Prof. Ahmad disclosed this during her inspection visit to Federal Government College, Kano, where she emphasized the government’s renewed commitment to improving infrastructure and creating a more conducive learning environment in federal unity schools.

The Minister stated that the renovation aligns with the founding vision of Unity Schools — to foster national integration, academic excellence, and equal opportunity for Nigerian students regardless of background.

As part of her tour, Prof. Ahmad interacted with students and teachers to assess the quality of instruction and service delivery. She highlighted the value of regular dialogue between policymakers and school communities in identifying challenges and determining resource priorities.

The Lagos State Government has announced plans to roll out more flexible rent payment options, including monthly and quarterly structures. This initiative aims to ease the financial burden on residents, particularly low-income earners struggling with yearly rent payments.

The Nigerian Army has apprehended no fewer than 12 suspects believed to be connected with terrorist activities orchestrated by a breakaway faction of Boko Haram, identified as the Mahmuda group.

The insurgent faction had reportedly taken over the Kainji Lake National Park, turning it into a base of operations for terrorizing residents in nearby border communities.

The General Officer Commanding (GOC) 2 Division, Nigerian Army, Major General Obinna Onubogu, confirmed the arrests during a visit to military camps within the affected regions. The arrests, he stated, were made during a series of coordinated raids in Baruten and Kaiama Local Government Areas of Kwara State, and Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State.

General Onubogu revealed that two of the detained individuals have been positively identified as active members of the Mahmuda-led insurgent group, while the remaining suspects are currently under investigation for suspected complicity in terror activities.

The GOC emphasized that the operation—codenamed Operation Park Strike Four—was initiated to dismantle terrorist cells, flush out bandits, and secure the Kainji Lake National Park and surrounding areas. According to him, troops have combed over 90 kilometers of forest terrain, from Kemanji into the heart of the Kainji forest, where a strong operational base has now been established.

“Our troops have made significant progress. We have successfully dislodged the bandits and are restoring peace to the region,” General Onubogu said.

He further disclosed that the ongoing military campaign is in line with directives from the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, to maintain a continuous military presence across the forest corridor and border communities to ensure lasting security for the affected populations.

Security operations are expected to continue in full force until the insurgent threat is completely neutralized and normalcy fully restored in the region.

ABUJA, NIGERIA — The Nigerian Senate has passed two significant tax reform bills aimed at transforming the country’s tax administration system and improving revenue generation and distribution across all levels of government.

During plenary, Senate President Godswill Akpabio described the passage of the bills as a critical step in modernising Nigeria’s fiscal framework, noting that the reforms would “add immense value to governance and revolutionise tax collection and distribution.”

2. The Joint Revenue Board (Establishment) Bill 2025, which includes provisions of the Nigeria Revenue Service Bill 2025

Both pieces of legislation were passed after deliberations in the Committee of the Whole and were adopted following a third reading on the Senate floor.

The reforms are part of the broader legislative agenda initiated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who had earlier submitted four tax-related bills to the National Assembly in October 2024 for review and approval.

Senate President Akpabio commended the progress made and expressed optimism that the approved tax reform measures would strengthen revenue institutions and bring clarity and fairness to the way taxes are assessed and shared across the federation.

KOGI STATE, NIGERIA — Security concerns have deepened in central Nigeria as intelligence reports reveal that the terrorist group Ansaru, a breakaway faction of Boko Haram, now operates at least eight terrorist cells across Kogi State. Three of the groups are reportedly stationed between Obajana and Kabba, a development that has forced high-profile individuals to pay for unofficial security escort to pass through the corridor.

“Ansaru, a terrorist group, has eight terrorist cells in Kogi State, with three located between Obajana and Kabba,” one security source told SaharaReporters. “Dignitaries now pay through security agencies to get permission to travel along those routes.”

Even more alarming, the same sources claim that the largest terrorist training camp in Nigeria is now situated in Niger State, just 93 kilometres from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

“The biggest terrorist camp in Nigeria is now in Niger State, less than 93 kilometres from Abuja,” a source revealed, raising grave national security concerns over its proximity to the seat of government.

Ansaru, known for its ties to Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), has long been designated as a terrorist organisation by both Nigerian and international authorities. The group has a bloody history of targeting civilians, critical infrastructure, and security personnel.

Efforts to reach police spokespersons in Kogi and Niger states — William Ovye Aya and Wasiu Abodun — were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.

USCIRF Raises Alarm Over Religious Violence

This development comes as the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) accuses the Nigerian government of failing to adequately respond to religiously motivated violence across the country.

In its March 2025 report, USCIRF highlighted the role of extremist groups like Ansaru, Boko Haram (also known as Jama’tu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati wal-Jihad), and ISWAP in targeted killings and kidnappings. The report mentioned that in May 2024, Ansaru gunmen reportedly abducted 160 mainly Christian children and killed eight people in Niger State.

The Commission also cited a January 2024 attack in Yobe State, where suspected insurgents killed 14 individuals, including a pastor from the Church of Christ in Nigeria.

“Violent Islamist groups and some Fulani militants sought to impose a singular interpretation of Islam on individuals and communities in their areas of operation, regardless of these individuals’ or communities’ own religion or belief,” the report noted.

Security analysts continue to call for urgent and decisive government intervention to dismantle terrorist cells and protect vulnerable communities.

The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the arrest of three additional suspects in connection with the recent wave of killings and insecurity in Plateau State, following intensified security operations aimed at dismantling criminal networks in the region.

According to a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the arrests stemmed from targeted intelligence-led operations focused on criminal conspiracy, arms trafficking, and unlawful possession of firearms linked to violent incidents that have rocked the state.

Among those apprehended is Abubakar Jibrin, a resident of Kalone Community in Shendam Local Government Area, who was arrested on May 3 at about 4:30 p.m. Investigators discovered a submachine gun (SMG) rifle with an empty magazine hidden in his residence, following his confession during interrogation.

More Illegal Arms Recovered

The police further disclosed that on May 4, security operatives recovered two fabricated revolver rifles in Barkin Ladi, another flashpoint in the ongoing crisis. The recovered weapons were linked to ammunition traced back to a suspect, Ismail Danjuma, who is currently in custody and providing useful information to authorities.

These developments form part of wider efforts to neutralise violent elements fueling the ongoing conflict in Plateau, which has drawn condemnation from both religious leaders and civil society groups.

Christian Leaders Lead Protests for Peace

In the wake of rising tensions, the Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Plateau State Chapter, Rev. Polycarp Lubo, led peaceful protests alongside other church leaders to demand a lasting end to the persistent killings and kidnappings across the state.

Governor Mutfwang Announces Curfews and Grazing Restrictions

A media aide to Kebbi State Governor has denounced a recent report circulating on some online platforms, describing it as false, malicious, and a tool of political distraction aimed at destabilising the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kebbi State.

Abdullahi Idris Zuru, speaking in Birnin Kebbi, accused certain online mediums of spreading fictitious stories sponsored by desperate politicians to incite panic within the ruling party. He warned that irresponsible journalism backed by “moneybags” would not succeed in Kebbi APC.

“These seasonal platforms hired by infamous politicians to create chaos in the APC—particularly in Kebbi State, which they see as a soft target—are in for real trouble,” Zuru stated.

Zuru pointed out that Governor Nasir Idris had already denied rumours of his defection to another political party, and credible national media outlets carried the governor’s statement within 24 hours of the initial publication.

“Where these faceless platforms got such unfiltered lies remains a mystery. The story only exists in the imaginations of degraded politicians who seek attention through confusion,” he said.

Zuru described the APC State Chairman, Abubakar Kana Zuru, as a unifier and a man of unquestionable integrity who led the party to a resounding victory in 2023 and remains a formidable force heading into the 2027 elections.

He also noted that the individuals named in the viral report are not even known members of the APC, further invalidating the story's credibility.

“Governor Nasir Idris has never considered defecting to the PDP, nor has he indicated support for any candidate outside the APC. His loyalty to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration is unshakable under any circumstance,” Zuru added.

The move aims to provide a clear, secure, and transparent process for the regularisation of factory-fitted tinted windows in vehicles.

The reactivation comes in response to widespread complaints from motorists about harassment by law enforcement agents over the use of tinted windows, despite having factory-fitted glass.

According to a statement issued by Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, the initiative is part of a broader security strategy to distinguish legitimate users—such as persons with medical needs or security personnel—from criminal elements who exploit tinted vehicles.

“Tinted vehicles have often been exploited for criminal purposes, including kidnapping, armed robbery, ‘one-chance’ scams, and other forms of banditry. Their use hampers police visibility and impedes effective law enforcement, thereby contributing to public insecurity,” the police said.

To this end, the newly launched system integrates identity verification through the National Identification Number (NIN) and Tax Identification Number (TIN). The digital process also includes biometric capture and background checks, ensuring that only vetted individuals are issued permits.

The Police noted that the revamped permit system will enhance investigative capacity, improve operational efficiency, and contribute to national security objectives.

Motorists can now access the online platform to apply for and process their Tinted Glass Permits without the need for physical presence at police stations.

The Federal Government of Nigeria has strongly condemned the brutal terrorist attack that occurred on April 22, 2025, in Pahalgam, located in southern Indian-administered Kashmir, which claimed the lives of 26 individuals—mostly tourists—and left several others critically injured.

This disclosure was made by Commander of Narcotics, Mitchell Ofoyeju, during a courtesy visit by maritime journalists to the Tin Can Island Strategic Command in Lagos.

Commander Ofoyeju emphasized that drug abuse is no longer just a crime issue but a critical global public health crisis that demands urgent and sustained intervention from all stakeholders.

“Through a combination of advanced technology and trained sniffer dogs, the Command successfully intercepted large quantities of illicit substances,” he stated.

According to the NDLEA, the street value of these confiscated drugs is estimated at over ₦134 billion.

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has issued a directive for the immediate withdrawal of Police Mobile Force (PMF) personnel from individuals categorized as Very Important Persons (VIPs), marking a decisive step in ongoing efforts to restructure the operations of the Nigeria Police Force.

Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, announced the development in a statement released on Sunday, noting that the directive is part of a broader reorganisation strategy of the PMF, also known as MOPOL.

According to Adejobi, it is “worrisome” that mobile police officers—who are trained for specialized tactical assignments—have been relegated to non-core duties such as escorting VIPs and guarding private properties. This trend, he stated, undermines the operational integrity and efficiency of the elite unit.

“The PMF was never designed to be a security outfit for individual elites. Its role in counterinsurgency, riot control, and protection of critical infrastructure must be reemphasized,” the statement read.

As part of the IGP's directive, PMF personnel are to be withdrawn from all unauthorized deployments, and each squadron must maintain fully-equipped, combat-ready standby teams capable of delivering rapid tactical support whenever required.

The Inspector-General also announced that the Nigeria Police Force will begin quarterly training for PMF personnel with emphasis on ethics, professionalism, and operational readiness.

Furthermore, all PMF Squadron Commanders have been placed on notice, with the IGP stressing that they will be held accountable for any misconduct or deviation from the reform mandate.

“This is both a professional and moral responsibility. All Squadron Commanders must lead by example through constant inspection, mentorship, and performance evaluation,” the IGP charged.

The Nigerian Mobile Police Force, or MOPOL, comprises approximately 40,000 personnel across 52 squadrons nationwide. While the unit’s core responsibilities revolve around national security threats, a significant portion of its operatives have long been attached to VIPs, a practice now under sharp review.

The police chief reiterated the force’s commitment to its constitutional mandate of protecting lives and property, emphasizing that reforms will continue in the interest of national security and public trust.

Abuja, FCT - Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has launched a scathing attack on the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, accusing him of betrayal and complicity in the All Progressives Congress (APC)’s alleged misrule. Atiku further claimed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is running Nigeria remotely via a WhatsApp group instead of delivering responsible leadership from Aso Rock.

The controversy erupted after Wike, during an interview on TVC, questioned the sincerity behind the growing political coalition seeking to unseat President Tinubu in the 2027 general elections. The coalition, comprising Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai, aims to present a united opposition front against the ruling APC.

Wike described the coalition’s proponents as power-hungry individuals pursuing personal ambitions, rather than working to build a formidable opposition platform.

“Everybody wants to become president of the country. Nobody wants to say, ‘Let me strengthen our party so we can position it for a proper democratic takeover,’” Wike stated.

Reacting sharply, Atiku's media aide, Paul Ibe, lambasted Wike, describing him as a political traitor with no moral authority to discuss sincerity or party loyalty.

He also accused Wike of meddling in Rivers State affairs to assert total control over the state government by allegedly conspiring with federal forces in Abuja to weaken Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

“Wike is not only undermining his party but also his own state. It’s shameful. Instead of supporting democratic structures, he’s using underhanded tactics to destabilize governance in Rivers,” Ibe stated.

Speaking to journalists after the Good Friday Mass held at Holy Ghost Parish in Makurdi, the Catholic priest-turned-governor confirmed the killing of five persons in Ukum LGA and expressed deep concern over the escalating violence in the Sankera geopolitical zone.

The deadly raids, allegedly carried out by suspected Fulani herdsmen, are part of an ongoing security crisis plaguing North-Central Nigeria, where tensions between herders and farmers continue to result in loss of life and property.

“We understand the pain our people are facing, but we must never take the law into our own hands,” Governor Alia stated. “The Benue State Government, in collaboration with the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), is putting in place a comprehensive counter-terrorism strategy to end these targeted killings.”

Coordinated Militia Attacks Leave 17 Dead

The violence, which unfolded in the late hours of April 17, 2025, has been linked to armed militias suspected to be Fulani herdsmen. According to a statement released by SP Sewuese Anene, the Police Public Relations Officer for Benue State, tactical teams were deployed to the troubled Sankera axis following intelligence reports of an impending attack.

“The militia first attacked Gbagir in Ukum LGA where five persons were killed. Simultaneously, another group launched an assault on neighbouring Logo LGA, leaving 12 dead,” Anene said.

She added that police and federal security operatives engaged the assailants, pushing them back towards the Taraba State forest region, a known hideout for armed militias in the Middle Belt.

Port Harcourt, Rivers State – The Nigeria Customs Service, Area II Command, Onne Port, Rivers State, has announced the interception of 20 containers loaded with illicit drugs valued at over N10 billion. Additionally, the Command recorded a revenue generation of N190.57 billion in the first quarter of 2025—an increase of 17.12% compared to the same period in 2024.

These revelations were made on Wednesday during a press briefing by the Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Mohammed Babandede, at the Command’s headquarters in Onne, Port Harcourt.

Comptroller Babandede emphasized that the Nigeria Customs Service plays a vital role in national security and economic development by enforcing compliance with customs laws and government policies on international trade, as well as collecting import duties and levies for the government.

He decried the importation of prohibited and illicit drugs into the country, describing it as a criminal act with dire consequences for public health and national security. “Importing illicit drugs and other prohibited wares into the country can have serious consequences for both the public and society. Such acts are punishable under extant laws with imprisonment, fines, or both,” he stated.

The total Duty Paid Value (DPV) of the seized goods amounts to N10,293,677,040.00.

On revenue generation, the Command recorded N190,569,212,397.42 in Q1 2025, compared to N162,705,313,561.48 in Q1 2024—showing a difference of N27,864,668,442.61 and a 17.12% increase.

For exports, the Command processed 1,274,695 metric tons of goods, mainly agricultural products and solid minerals, valued at N2,345,268,122.00.

Regarding trade facilitation, Babandede said the Service’s modernization project, including the B’odogwu Unified Information Management System, has improved container release efficiency and stakeholder engagement.

He also disclosed the handing over of a 1 x 20ft container containing donkey skin, meant for export, to the Nigeria Agricultural Quarantine Service for appropriate action.

Former Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Dr. Abubakar Chika Malami, has strongly refuted claims made by associates of Senator Tanko Al-Makura that the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) bloc has endorsed President Bola Tinubu’s administration and ruled out defection from the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking through his media aide, Muhammed Bello Doka, Malami emphasized that only loyalists of the CPC political ideology, founded under former President Muhammadu Buhari, have the legitimacy to speak on the bloc’s current position.

“When you talk about the CPC bloc, one must ask — who are you referring to? Is it individuals like Senator Tanko Al-Makura, Adamu Adamu, Aminu Bello Masari, and Farouk Adamu Aliyu — the same people who have, in recent times, thrown Buhari under the bus in their desperate quest for political relevance?” Doka questioned.

He asserted that any pronouncement by the group is purely personal and self-serving, bearing no official connection to the CPC bloc.

“Their statement is not reflective of the CPC base; it is a strategic attempt to remain politically relevant within a party structure that they never genuinely owned,” he added.

Malami Reacts to Defection Rumours

Addressing the rumours of Malami’s alleged defection to the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Doka described such claims as "figments of imagination", insisting that Malami remains a member of the APC.

“Dr. Malami is a notable political figure in Nigeria and would not defect secretly. He is still within the APC, although he is in ongoing consultations across several political platforms,” Doka clarified.

He stated that until consultations are concluded, any talk of defection or political declaration is premature.

“He remains very active in politics and, at the appropriate time, will communicate his next steps. He retains every constitutional right to associate with any political party or to contest for any position in Kebbi State or nationally,” the statement concluded.

“Two days ago, my younger brother took some contractors to my hometown in Ihima to inspect locations for upcoming projects that I attracted to my senatorial district,” she said.
“The unknown gunmen assumed I was the one in town and attacked my family’s house that night.”

“We urge the Inspector General of Police to immediately reinstate my security details,” the statement read.
“My commitment to serving my people should not be met with violence and intimidation.”

“El-Rufai has shown time and again that he is a political opportunist who will disparage anyone to promote his personal ambition,” Zaitawa said. “He is now acting like a political trader, selling out the North’s legacy and the APC’s integrity for self-gain.”

A night of spiritual devotion turned into sheer horror on Friday when unknown gunmen launched a coordinated attack on a mountain-top vigil in the Egbola area along Agbaja Road, within Lokoja Local Government Area of Kogi State. The assailants abducted several worshippers in the dead of night, marking yet another grim chapter in the rising wave of insecurity plaguing Nigeria’s North Central region.

According to eyewitness reports, the heavily armed attackers stormed the remote prayer location under the cover of darkness, indiscriminately opening fire to instill fear and disarray among worshippers gathered for the night vigil. Amid the chaos, multiple worshippers were forcibly taken into the surrounding forest.

One of the abducted victims, identified as Mary Adams Gure, was rescued during a daring counteroffensive mounted by local vigilantes who responded rapidly to distress alerts from community members.

“They came shooting to scare everyone. People were running in different directions. Some were captured and taken away into the forest,” a local resident said, speaking under anonymity.

The successful rescue of Gure reportedly followed a fierce gun duel between the vigilante group and the kidnappers. According to sources within the security outfit, Gure managed to escape during the commotion and was later found by the search party.

“The vigilantes were mobilised quickly and engaged the gunmen in a gunfight. In the process, Mary Gure was rescued. A search-and-rescue operation is ongoing to find the remaining victims,” a member of the vigilante team confirmed.

As of press time, the exact number of abducted worshippers remains unknown. Efforts to get an official response from the Kogi State Police Command proved unsuccessful, as calls and messages sent to Police Public Relations Officer, ASP William Aya, went unanswered.
