Abuja, Nigeria – The House of Representatives has strongly condemned the recent wave of brutal attacks on Ruwi, Manguna, Daffo, Josho, and Hurti communities in Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State, describing the violence as inhumane and intolerable.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Musa Krishi, the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Dr Tajudeen Abbas, expressed deep outrage over the senseless killings, destruction of property, and displacement of innocent citizens.

“This carnage is senseless and barbaric,” the Speaker declared. “It is one too many. Our people cannot continue to live in fear, suffer needless deaths, or watch their homes and farmlands go up in flames.”

Dr. Abbas decried the growing insecurity in parts of the Middle Belt, especially the recurring violence in Plateau State, and lamented the emotional, economic, and psychological toll it has taken on victims and their families.

He conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, the government, and the people of Plateau State, offering prayers for the souls of the deceased and strength for those injured or displaced.

“My heart goes out to every family affected by these cruel attacks. May the souls of the departed find rest, and may justice not be denied,” the Speaker added.

In his call to action, the Speaker urged relevant security agencies to intensify their efforts to investigate, apprehend, and prosecute the perpetrators of the violence. He emphasized that impunity must not be allowed to thrive, warning that failure to act decisively would only embolden criminal elements and further destabilize already fragile communities.

“If we fail to confront this rising tide of violence with firm resolve, we risk allowing the crisis to fester and the suffering of innocent civilians to worsen,” he said.

Speaker Abbas reaffirmed the commitment of the House of Representatives to work with security agencies, community leaders, and state authorities to strengthen peacebuilding efforts and ensure that the rule of law prevails.

The Kogi State Commissioner for Information, Kingsley Fanwo, in a statement on Tuesday, described the senator’s homecoming event as a deliberate provocation aimed at causing unrest in the state.

“She deliberately violated the state government’s ban on political gatherings, which was put in place to prevent security breaches and maintain peace,” Fanwo stated.

According to him, security agencies had been placed on high alert following intelligence reports indicating a possible infiltration by troublemakers. The state government insists that its ban on rallies and public gatherings is a precautionary measure to maintain stability.

Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan Defends Her Visit

Reacting to the allegations, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan dismissed the claims that she was orchestrating violence, insisting that her visit was purely a homecoming to celebrate Sallah with her people.

“We are not having a rally. This is just me, the Senator representing Kogi Central, coming down to her people to celebrate this festive time – Sallah with you, and there is nothing wrong with that,” she stated.

According to her, the ban on rallies and processions was a targeted attempt to suppress her activities.

“I heard that rallies and gatherings would not be allowed, that roads would be blocked, and convoys leading into the state would not be permitted. But I am breaking no law. This is Nigeria. We have the right to be free, to express our choice in gatherings and celebrations,” she added.

The military-led governments of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger have announced a 0.5% import levy on goods entering their countries from Nigeria and other ECOWAS member states.

According to an official statement from the Alliance of Sahel States (ASS), the tax is aimed at funding the activities of their new regional bloc, following their exit from ECOWAS.

“This levy will apply to all imported goods except humanitarian aid and will serve to finance the activities of our union,” the statement noted.

Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has called for a public parade of the suspects arrested in connection with the brutal killing of 16 Kano indigenes in Udene, Uromi Local Government Area of Edo State.

The governor also reiterated the need for full compensation to the families of the victims as part of justice for the heinous act.

Governor Yusuf made this demand on Monday when he received Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, who led a delegation to Kano to offer condolences over the tragic incident.

He insisted that the swift arrest of the perpetrators must be followed by a transparent process, including a public parade, to assure Nigerians that justice is being served.

“We appreciate the prompt action taken so far, but justice must not only be done; it must be seen to be done. The people of Kano, and indeed all Nigerians, deserve to see those responsible for this massacre brought to justice publicly,” Governor Yusuf stated.

He further commended Governor Okpebholo for engaging with Hausa community leaders in Edo State to prevent escalation and for committing to compensating the bereaved families.

“The compensation promised is a commendable step, but it must be executed without delay to support the grieving families who have lost their breadwinners,” he added.

Governor Yusuf also praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for directing security agencies to take immediate action and emphasized that such atrocities must never be repeated in any part of Nigeria.

Earlier, Governor Monday Okpebholo, while expressing deep sorrow over the killings, assured that his administration would ensure that justice is served swiftly and fairly.

The Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association (PETROAN) commended the federal government and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) for successfully rehabilitating the facility, calling it a "remarkable achievement."

Joseph Obelea, PETROAN’s Publicity Secretary, praised the stakeholders involved for their "professionalism and expertise" in delivering what he described as a "world-class rehabilitation project." He also acknowledged the cooperation of host communities during the refurbishment process.

Obelea confirmed that PETROAN members are now loading diesel and kerosene from the refinery, while NNPCL retail marketers are distributing petrol. "This development has not only ensured a steady supply of petroleum products but has also helped eliminate the circulation of fake kerosene and diesel in the market," he said.

The refinery, which began operations four months ago, recently started processing crude oil with a target output of 60,000 barrels per day (bpd). However, the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) cautioned that the refinery’s revival would not immediately lead to a drop in fuel prices.

The Senator representing Kogi West, Sunday Karimi, has stated that the ongoing controversy involving Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of Kogi Central has justified former Governor Yahaya Bello’s stance against her.

Speaking to journalists in Lokoja on Sunday, Karimi asserted that recent developments confirm that Bello was not to blame for the past disputes between him and Akpoti-Uduaghan before the National Assembly elections.

His comments come in reaction to the ongoing face-off between Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan and Senate President Godswill Akpabio, which has sparked public debate.

“Former Governor Yahaya Bello must have seen it coming,” Karimi remarked.

The Kebbi State Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has announced the generation of ₦13 million in revenue and the seizure of contraband goods worth ₦84 million in just one month under the leadership of Comptroller Chidi Chukwumeziri N.

Speaking at the Command’s headquarters in Birnin Kebbi on Thursday, Comptroller Chukwumeziri attributed the successful operations to a seamless collaboration with sister agencies, including the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), the Nigerian Army (NA), the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

He revealed that the confiscated items included firearms, fake drugs, and other dangerous goods, which were subsequently destroyed.

“We did not carry out these operations just for our children alone but for the safety of all Nigerians,” he stated.

Seized Items and Commitment to Lawful Trade

Under Nigeria’s customs laws, the Command also intercepted:

1. Foreign rice
2. Bales of second-hand clothes
3. 20 cartons of light cigarettes
4. 13,000 litres of premium motor spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol

The Federal Ministry of Steel Development has unveiled an ambitious plan to increase Nigeria’s steel production capacity to 10 million metric tonnes per year, as part of efforts to drive industrial growth and reduce reliance on imports.

The Minister of Steel Development, Prince Shuaibu Abubakar Audu, disclosed this initiative during his visit to the National Steel Raw Materials Exploration Agency (NSRMEA) in Kaduna.

Prince Audu emphasized that Nigeria spends approximately $4 billion annually on steel imports, underscoring the urgent need for import substitution to ease pressure on the country’s foreign exchange reserves.

“For Nigeria to produce steel in the large quantities we desire, it is crucial that the exploration arm of the industry operates at full capacity,” he stated.

He described the NSRMEA as a strategic institution in the federal government’s broader vision of expanding Nigeria’s economy to $1 trillion by 2030.

Key Initiatives for Steel Sector Growth

As part of the revitalization efforts, the Ministry plans to host Nigeria’s inaugural Steel Summit, where industry stakeholders will collaborate to develop a comprehensive roadmap for the sector’s growth.

Prince Audu also reiterated President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to rehabilitating the Ajaokuta Steel Company, integrating military hardware production into its operations as part of a larger strategy to establish a military-industrial complex in Nigeria.

He highlighted ongoing collaborations with the Ministry of Defence and the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) to manufacture military hardware locally. A draft Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has already been shared with DICON and is awaiting presidential approval.

Additionally, the Minister noted the progress of the Metallurgical Industry Bill, which has passed its second reading in the House of Representatives. “Once passed and signed into law, the bill will provide a regulatory framework for private and corporate steel players, ensuring proper governance and sector development,” he explained.

Attracting Foreign Investment in Steel Production

Prince Audu further outlined efforts to attract foreign direct investment into the steel sector. He referenced President Tinubu’s visit to New Delhi in September 2023, where an agreement was reached to produce 5 million metric tonnes of steel in Nigeria.

Moreover, a Chinese firm, Galaxy, has committed to investing $300 million in a steel plant in Ogun State, signaling growing investor confidence in Nigeria’s steel industry.

Despite challenges that have hindered the sector for over 45 years, the Minister expressed confidence that ongoing reforms will revive the industry and position Nigeria as a key player in global steel production.

LAGOS – The Radio, Television, Theatre and Arts Workers Union of Nigeria (RATTAWU) and the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service, Technical and Recreational Services Employees (AUPCTRE) have petitioned President Bola Tinubu over what they described as a crisis at the National Theatre Complex.

At a world press conference held in Lagos on Thursday, the unions raised serious concerns about workers' welfare, management sidelining, and unfulfilled promises regarding the theatre’s renovation.

Renovation Delays and Broken Promises

According to the unions, the former Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, had assured that the National Theatre renovation would be completed within 18 months and that no job would be lost. However, five years after the project began, they lamented that the promises have not been kept.

“The continued restriction of workers from their designated offices has not only affected productivity but has also subjected our members to psychological distress, professional displacement, and operational stagnation,” the unions said.

Workers Denied Access to Offices

The labour groups condemned the denial of access to offices within the complex, forcing staff to work under substandard conditions.

“This restriction is a clear breach of previous commitments and undermines workplace fairness and inclusion,” they stated.

Sidelining of National Theatre Management

The unions also criticized the alleged sidelining of the General Manager of the National Theatre, citing instances where high-level visits took place without his knowledge.

“The visit of the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and his delegation occurred without informing the substantive management. This is a serious breakdown in institutional protocol and transparency,” the unions alleged.

Concerns Over Programme Restrictions

Another major issue raised was the restriction of internally organized events despite official payments.

“National Theatre staff and departments are being prevented from hosting internal programmes, even after making payments through the Treasury Single Account (TSA). This suppression not only affects revenue generation but also contradicts the essence of the National Theatre as a hub for cultural expression,” the unions stated.

Call for Government Intervention

The unions urged the Federal Government to take immediate action by restoring workers to their offices, addressing the operational restrictions, and ensuring transparency in the ongoing renovation project.

They vowed to continue their advocacy until their demands are met, emphasizing that the National Theatre is a national heritage that must not be mismanaged.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has strongly responded to former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s criticism of trade unions and workers’ welfare in his new book, Nigeria: Past and Future.

In a statement released on Monday, NLC President Comrade Joe Ajaero reminded Obasanjo of his administration’s harsh treatment of labour leaders, which included arrests, detentions, and even the killing of protesting workers.

The union accused Obasanjo of attempting to proscribe the NLC and create a rival labour centre after failing to bring it under government control.

"Obasanjo Should Do a Soul Search" – NLC

“If Chief Obasanjo has noticed an erosion in the powers of the trade unions, he should do a soul search. Who knows, he might find himself culpable,” the statement read.

The NLC acknowledged some of Obasanjo’s concerns, particularly his assertion that the minimum wage is insufficient to meet workers' basic needs. The union highlighted its demand for a ₦610,000 minimum wage, which the government and the Nigeria Employers' Consultative Association (NECA) rejected, instead proposing ₦50,000 without justification.

Ajaero explained that this led to a nationwide strike, which was suspended only after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu intervened and offered ₦70,000.

A High Court in Lafia, presided over by Justice Simon Aboki, on Monday commenced hearing in the murder case against 32-year-old singer Oluwatimilehin Daniel Ajayi, who is accused of killing and dismembering a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Salome Adaidu.

Ajayi, who was brought to the court under heavy security from the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS), pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Nasarawa State Government Takes Over Prosecution

During the proceedings, the Attorney General of Nasarawa State, Hauwa Samuel Jugbo, officially took over the prosecution from the police.

Prosecution counsel Raymond Umar moved a motion to amend the defendant’s name from Timilehin Ajayi to his full name, Oluwatimilehin Daniel Ajayi. Justice Aboki granted the request after confirming the name from the accused.

Witnesses Testify

Three witnesses took the stand, including:

1. The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Karshi Police Station

2. The deceased’s uncle, Mr. Adaidu Samson

During cross-examination, defense counsel Joseph Tuku Bisong asked whether forensic investigations had been conducted to confirm the victim’s identity.

A yet-to-be medically diagnosed disease has so far killed five students of Kebbi State University of Science and Technology, Aliero (KSUSTA).

Some students of the university told our correspondent—on condition of anonymity since the university is yet to make an official announcement—that last week, four students of the university died mysteriously, and today, another student who fell sick at night passed away.

The source explained that officials of the World Health Organization (WHO) visited their university last week and held an awareness campaign on the dangers of meningitis but did not confirm whether the two students who died before the campaign were killed by meningitis.

However, when contacted on the issue, the Registrar of the University, Maimaru Alhaji Tilli, confirmed the death of four students according to the university's records.

"Yes, four students died in our own records, but we don't know the cause. However, we do know there is a need to decongest students’ accommodation."

He said he had officially written to the Ministry for Higher Education, particularly to the Commissioner, Alhaji Isah Abubakar Tunga, seeking advice on what to do to prevent further deaths.

"We requested in the letter to allow the university to be closed, but we didn't get any response. As for the disease, we don’t know yet," he said.

Another student who confirmed the deaths stated that even the Students' Union Government (SUG) had written to the university, requesting its closure due to the strange disease that is claiming students' lives.

Similarly, another resident lamented the lack of potable water despite the state’s abundant resources. “Only those with money can afford to sink personal boreholes, while the rest of us suffer. There are so many things the government should be addressing first,” she said.

Another concerned citizen criticized the government for adopting policies without tailoring them to local realities. “They just copy and paste policies from other places without considering our peculiar needs. How do you impose more taxes on people who can barely afford three square meals?” he questioned.

Umar Gajo dismissed recent reports and images suggesting that some Atiku supporters had defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing them as staged and orchestrated political drama. He insisted that those in the pictures were unknown faces, not genuine Atiku loyalists.

The group accused DSP Jibrin of using similar tactics in the past, recalling an instance where he claimed to have welcomed defectors from Rabiu Kwankwaso’s camp, only for them to return to their original political base. This, according to Umar Gajo, earned him the nickname “A Wanki Gara” (a term used to describe those paid to switch political sides).

Furthermore, Atikulated Media alleged that DSP Jibrin is using financial incentives to lure opposition supporters, only to later distribute part of the funds among his recruits. As a result, they have now dubbed him “A Wanki Arewa” (a northern turncoat).

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has destroyed counterfeit and expired drugs worth over ₦100 billion at the Moniya dump site in Akinyele Local Government Area of Oyo State.

Speaking at the destruction exercise, NAFDAC Director General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to ensuring the safety and efficacy of food, drugs, cosmetics, medical devices, chemicals, packaged water, and beverages.

“As the lead agency and chair of the Federal Task Force on Fake and Counterfeit Drugs, NAFDAC is determined to rid Nigeria of harmful and substandard products,” she stated.

Prof. Adeyeye, represented by NAFDAC’s Director of Narcotics and Controlled Substances, Yedunni Adenuga, disclosed that the agency has put in place strict regulations for the licensing, sale, and distribution of pharmaceutical products to prevent fake drugs from infiltrating the market.

Major Crackdown on Open Drug Markets

She also highlighted NAFDAC’s recent enforcement operations in major drug markets, including Idumota (Lagos), Onitsha (Anambra), Ariaria (Abia), and Ezeukwu (Abia), which were carried out with the support of the National Security Adviser.

The raid involved over 1,000 security operatives, including personnel from the Military, Police, and Department of State Services (DSS).

Discovery of Banned and Unregistered Drugs

The Kano State Police Command has achieved a major breakthrough by arresting four suspected bandits, preventing their plans to purchase an AK-47 rifle.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, disclosed this while parading the suspects before journalists at the police headquarters in Bompai, Kano.

According to Kiyawa, the arrest was made possible through credible intelligence gathered by law enforcement operatives.

Arrest and Recovery of Weapons

The suspects—Shukurana Salihu (25), Rabi’u Dahiru (35), Ya’u Idris (30), all from Katsina State, and Muktar Sani (30) from Yandodo Hotoro Quarters, Kano—were apprehended on March 6, 2025, at about 2:00 pm at Chula Filling Station, Hotoro Quarters, Kano.

A thorough search of the suspects led to the recovery of a cache of arms and ammunition, including:

1. Three (3) locally made revolver pistols
2. 12 live ammunition of different calibers
3. Three (3) cartridges
4. Two (2) cutlasses

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has reaffirmed its commitment to facilitating the seamless movement of containers by rail from Apapa Port in Lagos to Kaduna and Kano, in collaboration with Inland Containers Nigeria Ltd. (ICNL).

NRC’s Managing Director, Kayode Opeifa, gave the assurance on Wednesday in Lagos while receiving the ICNL management team, led by its Managing Director, Omotayo Dada.

Opeifa emphasized that the corporation is open to partnerships with major freight movers to enhance cargo transportation across the country. He noted that NRC had previously collaborated with APM Terminals (APMT) for container movement to the Inland Dry Port in Ibadan, Oyo State.

"The corporation will continue to design products for companies willing to use the rail for cargo movement. With the ICNL partnership, we aim to transport an additional 50 to 100 containers daily from Lagos to Kano via Apapa, Ijoko, Ilorin, Minna, and Kaduna," he stated.

The NRC's Director of Operations and Commercial, Akin Osinowo, acknowledged ICNL as a longstanding client while highlighting past challenges that disrupted freight services, particularly on the narrow gauge tracks.

"This behaviour is not in line with our character; thus, we, the Kogi Central Concerned Stakeholders, may be compelled to initiate the recall process if the current public abuse of her privilege of representation continues.

"We call upon the Senate to undertake the necessary disciplinary measures to serve as a deterrent to other serving senators."

A Committee on Illegal Chartered Operations, established by the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, has exposed regulatory weaknesses, security vulnerabilities, and revenue losses linked to illegal private charter activities in Nigeria.

The seven-member Task Force, led by Captain Ado Sanusi, submitted its final report to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo, in Abuja, highlighting serious loopholes in the Permit for Non-Commercial Flight (PNCF) system and inadequate oversight in the sector.

Findings and Recommendations

The committee’s findings revealed that illegal private charter operations not only pose risks to aviation safety but also create unfair competition for legitimate operators.
Among the key issues identified were:

1. Regulatory weaknesses and poor enforcement.
2. Loopholes in the PNCF system, allowing private jet owners to conduct unauthorized commercial flights.
3. Inadequate oversight, making it difficult to track and regulate operations.
4. Security threats, including money laundering, drug trafficking, and fugitive transfers.
5. Significant revenue losses for the government.

To tackle these issues, the Task Force recommended:

1. Strengthening regulatory oversight to curb illegal operations.
2. Enhancing security measures to prevent criminal activities.
3. Improving compliance with aviation laws to ensure transparency.

5. Shutting down the General Aviation Terminal in Abuja, which has reportedly become a hub for illicit activities.

Minister Keyamo Vows Tougher Action

Responding to the report, Minister Festus Keyamo assured that the government would crack down on illegal charter operations and address the long-standing regulatory lapses affecting the aviation sector.

He emphasized that many private jet owners abuse the PNCF system, engaging in unauthorized commercial flights and illegal transactions.

“This practice has been on for many years before I became Minister, but I thought there was a need to confront it headlong. When you cannot track them, it leads to money laundering, drug trafficking, illegal entry and exits into the country, and all kinds of illegal activities.”

Keyamo reaffirmed President Bola Tinubu’s administration’s commitment to safeguarding the aviation industry and ensuring compliance with aviation laws. He also commended the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) for supporting the committee’s work and promised to implement the recommendations in full.

As part of a strategic plan to reduce carbon emissions and boost Lagos State’s carbon credit portfolio for infrastructure funding, the state government has commenced a three-day "80 Million Clean Cook Stoves Project Implementation Retreat."

The Bureau Newspaper gathered that the initiative, a collaboration between the Office of the Special Adviser on Climate Change and Circular Economy, Green Plinth Africa, Carbon AI, Carbonivity, and Numerix Development Limited, aims to distribute 80 million free clean cooking stoves to rural women across Nigeria.

The technical retreat will focus on strategies to phase out firewood-based cooking, mitigate health and environmental hazards, and enhance Nigeria’s capacity to harness carbon credits.

Sanwo-Olu Unveils Clean Cook Stove Distribution Plan

Declaring the retreat open, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by the State Head of Service, Mr. Bode Agoro, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to a cleaner and carbon-free environment.

He announced that the state would begin distributing clean cook stoves in Makoko by June 2025, while plans were underway to establish a clean cooking stove production factory in Lagos.

Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized that if properly harnessed, the green investment sector could create 3.5 million green jobs in the state.

Niger State, Other Stakeholders Back the Initiative

Speaking at the event, Niger State Governor Mohammed Bago, represented by the Director General of the Niger State Green Economy Agency, Dr. Abila Galadima, commended Lagos for pioneering the project. He reaffirmed Niger State’s commitment to climate change initiatives and a sustainable green economy.

Dr. Victor Fodeke, Managing Director of Green Plinth Africa, revealed that 20 states had already keyed into the project, which aims to reduce carbon emissions, promote tree planting, and combat deforestation.

The three-day retreat is expected to yield recommendations on carbon emission reduction strategies and enhancing Nigeria’s foreign exchange earnings through carbon credit programs.

…Ogoni Threaten to Shut Down Process, Demand Justice for Saro-Wiwa, Others

A massive protest erupted in Bori, Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State, as Ogoni indigenes took to the streets to express their outrage over the alleged hijack of the oil resumption process by politicians with vested interests.

The Bureau Newspaper gathered that the protesters, drawn from various Ogoni communities and grassroots organizations, accused certain political figures of sidelining the people in ongoing discussions concerning oil production in the region. They insisted that any resumption of oil activities must be spearheaded by the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP), which led the original struggle that forced Shell out of Ogoniland in 1993.

Speaking to The Bureau Newspaper, MOSOP President, Mr. Fegalo Nsuke, condemned the actions of politicians who, according to him, are attempting to impose decisions on the people without consulting the legitimate representatives of the Ogoni struggle.

“There cannot be oil resumption in any part of Ogoni without inputs from MOSOP leadership,” Nsuke stated. “We will not accept any decision that is imposed on us without our involvement. MOSOP started this struggle, and we will not be marginalized in the decision-making process. Any attempt to sideline us will be lawfully and nonviolently resisted.”

The protesters, who marched through the streets of Bori, carried placards with inscriptions such as “Clear Ken Saro-Wiwa’s Name Now,” “No to Forceful Oil Resumption,” “Stop the Ogoni Genocide,” and “No Exoneration, No Oil Resumption in Ogoniland.”

The National Youth Council of Ogoni People (NYCOP) President, Comrade Barinuazor Emmanuel, also spoke exclusively to The Bureau Newspaper, emphasizing that the Ogoni people will not accept any oil resumption process that does not include the full exoneration of Ken Saro-Wiwa and the other Ogoni activists executed in 1995.

“Ken Saro-Wiwa was not guilty of any crime,” Emmanuel stated. “He was a hero who fought for the rights of the Ogoni people, and his name must be cleared. We want oil resumption, but it must be done the right way. The Federal Government must engage in a transparent, roundtable discussion with the Ogoni people, not impose decisions through political middlemen.”

He further demanded that the government grant operational licenses to indigenous Ogoni companies, unbundle OML 11, and provide adequate compensation for decades of environmental degradation suffered by the people.

“We are not against development; we are against exploitation and marginalization. We want to be part of the decision-making process, and we want our rights to be respected,” he added.

The protesters also called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to halt the current process being coordinated by the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) and initiate a new, inclusive approach that would genuinely reflect the interests of the Ogoni people.

“Ribadu and Mitee should help Ogoni people,” one protester declared, referring to National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu and former MOSOP leader Barr. Ledum Mitee, whom they accused of supporting the collective interests of the people.

Emmanuel further issued a strong warning to political figures allegedly trying to manipulate the process for personal gains.

“The National Security Adviser must call the Ogoni political class to order before they sabotage the President’s genuine intentions. We are not asking for too much—just that the government recognizes our rights as Ogoni people and involves us in every decision regarding oil exploration on our land,” he told The Bureau Newspaper.

Additionally, the protesters demanded a full investigation into the killing of the Ogoni Four, an incident that led to the controversial trial and execution of Saro-Wiwa and others in 1995.

“We want to know the truth about what happened to our brothers. Justice must be served, and those responsible must be held accountable,” Emmanuel insisted.

The protest, which saw massive participation from MOSOP, the Federation of Ogoni Women’s Associations (FOWA), the Ogoni Living Martyrs, the Ogoni Peace and Unity Forum, and NYCOP, underscored the deep frustration among the Ogoni people over their continued exclusion from discussions about their land and resources.

As tensions continue to rise, the Ogoni people have vowed to resist any attempt to impose an oil resumption process without their full participation, with some warning that they will take further action if their demands are ignored.
