The helicopter carrying Navy SEALs malfunctioned as it approached Osama bin Laden’s compound at about 3:30 p.m. ET Sunday, stalling as it hovered. The pilot set it down gently inside the walls, then couldn’t get it going again.

It was a heart-stopping moment for President Barack Obama, who had been monitoring the raid in the White House Situation Room since 1 p.m., surrounded by members of his war cabinet.

The White House says the compound that housed Osama bin Laden in Pakistan was "extraordinarily unique" and had many signs that indicated he was hiding there.

The structure, which has been described as a mansion, was on a "large plot of land" in a "relatively secluded" area, a senior administration official told reporters on a conference call. The residence itself was "eight times larger" than other homes in the area, said the official, who refused to be identified.

"We were shocked by what we saw," the official said after President Obama announced that bin Laden had been killed at the compound in Abbottabad.

The security measures at the compound were "extraordinary," the official said, describing walls that were 12 to 18 feet high and topped with barbed wire, in addition to walls on the inside. Access to the mansion was restricted with two security gates, officials said.

Another sign was that the residents of the mansion burned their trash, unlike their neighbors, who simply put their garbage outside, they said.

The property, valued at $1 million, had no telephone or Internet access, the White House said. It was "custom built to hide someone of significance," the official said.

Everything that American intelligence gatherers saw, including "extremely elaborate" security, was "perfectly consistent with what our experts expected bin Laden's hideout to look like," the official said.

The United States is treating Osama bin Laden’s body in “accordance with Islamic practice,” a White House official says.

President Obama announced Sunday night that American forces killed bin Laden in Pakistan and that they took his body afterward. He said no Americans were harmed in the fight.

Asked how bin Laden’s body will be treated, a senior administration official told reporters on a conference call that “we are ensuring that is handled in accordance with Islamic practice and tradition.”

The official, who refused to be identified, said the matter is “something that we take very seriously, and so, therefore, this is being handled in an appropriate manner.”

Early Monday morning, a U.S. official confirmed reports that the body had been buried at sea.

Peter Bergen, a national security analyst, predicted on CNN that bin Laden’s face will be shown because of visual evidence that must be displayed. He also noted that Islamic law calls for bodies to be buried within 24 hours of death.

“In Islam, the body has to be buried in 24 hours,” Bergen said. “That will happen.”
