Until African countries can unite in their individual nations - if not its not going to achieve anything. Or if we have an African leader who can be loved, strong, wealthy enough to help other nation's conflict, able to call others to order and resolve conflict between nations in Africa and other side - it will also help integrate AU.

Thank you, but I have to wonder though, are snipers/assassins difficult to come by in Nigeria or is it just that these government people have managed to buy them all off? There must be someone somewhere who is upset enough to actually do something. I find it hard to believe that OUK and his mother would be difficult hit targets.
NO. They actually own the snipers grin

Politics › Sss Seize 13 Container Loads Of Rocket Launchers, Grenades In Apapa by egift(op): 11:35am On Oct 27, 2010
State Security Service (SSS) operatives today successfully intercepted an arsenal of arms and ammunitions including rocket launchers and mortars, mortar rounds, live cartridges and grenades, packed in thirteen (13) 40ft shipping containers at the A.P. Moller Terminals of the Apapa Port.

The SSS, which acted on a lead, were assisted by other security agencies in intercepting the containers inside the terminal.

THEWILL gathered that the shipper did not declare the true content of the containers which were suspected to have been shipped to Nigeria from the Middle East.

Security sources said a manhunt has been initiated to apprehend the owner of the shipments.

SSS spokesperson, Mrs. Marilyn Ogar in a statement confirming the seizure said: “Today at the Apapa Wharf, the State Security Service as part of its extra security surveillance since the October 1 incidence, intercepted 13 containers.

“On opening the first container, the service operatives discovered rocket launchers, grenades and other explosives. The contents and findings from the other detained 12 containers, which the service is opening after the first, would be made public.

“The service has launched investigations immediately on the discovery and the circumstances surrounding it.”

The Nigerian government has tried unsuccessfully to reduce the number of dangerous arms and ammunitions on the streets which often leave security agencies helpless during gun battles with criminals and gunmen.

Politics › ‘i Was Brutalised For Making U-turn In Front Of A Retired Admiral’s House’ by egift(op): 2:48am On Oct 25, 2010
When Mr. Lawson Tekena, a graduate of microbiology, decided to make a U-turn in front of a building on Tombia Road, GRA, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, it did not occur to him that that singular act would land him in trouble.

He said what was uppermost in his mind was to avoid the traffic jam on the road so that he could get to his destination on time.

But the spot Tekena chose to make his U-turn was in front of the house of retired Admiral Festus Porbeni, a minister of transport under Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar’s regime.

Tekena told PUNCH METRO that some security men and naval ratings approached him and asked him why he wanted to park his car in front of their boss‘s house.

He said all his explanations to the naval ratings that his mission was just to make a U-turn in front of the house and not to park his car were rebuffed.

Tekena said before he could explain further, the naval ratings and the security men pounced on him. He added that one of them carried a big stone and hit one of his car‘s side mirrors.

Sensing danger, he said he attempted to manouvre his car so that he could leave the spot. But he said he was prevented by the naval ratings, who proceeded to give him the beating of his life.

He said as he was being beaten, one of the naval ratings dashed into their boss’ compound and brought out a gun.

Tekena said, “He (the naval rating) tried to drag me into the building, but I tried my best to resist him. Even when the crowd that gathered at the scene told them to leave me, they did not listen. The Naval men dragged me inside and began to punch me all over my body.

“The one who punched me while I was in the vehicle corked his gun and put it on my head apparently ready to shoot me.

”In the process, one of the bullets fell down and he went to hit me on the head with the butt of the gun. At that point, all my body was covered with blood, which was gushing from my head, precisely at the point where the rating hit me.

“In that state, the naval rating still asked me to lie on the ground. That was after he had removed the magazine of his gun and fixed it back. But I refused to lie down.”

He said after he was released, some officials of the Rivers State Government House took him to a hospital in an ambulance.

Tekena, who was wearing a cap to cover the deep cut on his head when he spoke to our correspondent, said, “When he (naval rating) carried his gun, I thought about my three daughters and my wife, who just gave birth and said if this man killed me here, what would become of my children? It would have been tragic because my new born baby wouldn‘t have known his father.”

He said he reported the incident to the police station, where the Divisional Crime Officer sent six of his men to investigate the matter.

He said when the policemen arrived at the scene, the naval ratings refused to listen to them, adding that at that point, the police decided to leave him to his fate.

Tekena explained that as they were about leaving, one of the naval ratings, whom he identified as Abubakar, appealed to him that the matter should be forgotten.

“This was the same man, who called me a ‘bloody civilian’ and asked me where I was when militants were everywhere in Port Harcourt,” he said.

But Abubakar, who appeared to be the most senior among the naval ratings guarding the house, told our correspondent on the phone that he was just a peace maker.

“I wasn‘t there. But when I came and saw them fighting, I asked them to stop and that was all,” he said.

Tekena, however, faulted Abubakar and wondered how he could have fought five men, two of whom were armed.

An eyewitness, who identified himself simply as Tony, said Tekena was treated like an animal on the fateful day, adding that if not for the crowd, the Microbiologist would have been shot by the naval ratings.

“They dragged him (Tekena) into the building and by the time they decided to bring him out, his shirt was already torn while his entire body was covered in his blood,” the eyewitness noted.

“The crowd that gathered at the scene knocked violently on the gate and pleaded that they released Tekena. Many people parked their cars outside to watch the show of shame. But by the time the naval ratings released my friend, they had already torn his shirt and hit him with the butt of the gun. His body was filled with blood”, Tekena‘s friend, who gave his name simply as Zukky, also said.

When contacted, the Rivers State Police Public Relations Officer, Dr. Rita Inoma-Abbey, said she could not comment on the issue because she had not been briefed.

Efforts made to reach the Public Relations Officer of the Nigerian Navy in the state, Mr. N. Yeibo, were abortive as he did not pick his calls when our correspondent called his two lines. Also, he had not responded to text messages sent to his line as at the time the paper was going to bed.

Our correspondent could not also reach Porbeni, but his Personal Assistant who spoke on the telephone declined comments. She demanded to know our correspondent’s “interest”in the matter.

“What is your interest in the matter? Are you Tekena‘s brother? I don‘t know what your interest is, but whatever it is; I will call Abubakar and tell him what you have told me. I don‘t know why you want to publish it in the newspaper; I don‘t know what your report will do,” she said.

Politics › Security Agents Almost Broke My Cousin’s Hand — Jonathan by egift(op): 12:20am On Oct 25, 2010
President Goodluck Jonathan on Sunday expressed concern about the high level of security that accompanied him on his three-day visit to his home state of Bayelsa.

The security details, he said, did not allow him to see people he would have loved to and visit places in his home state.

He stated this during the thanksgiving service to mark the end of the visit.

The President listed his cousin and others he grew up with in his hometown, Otuoke, as some of such people that were denied access to him by the operatives.

“If only you see the way they frustrated my cousin and stopped him from coming close to me, you will understand what am talking about. They nearly broke his hand. I was sorry for the poor man,” Jonathan said. He did not give the name of the cousin.

Jonathan, a former governor of the state, said it was unfortunate that he had more security around him in his own state, than all the other states he had visited since he became President.

He said that the service would have taken place at St. Peter’s Anglican Church in Yenagoa but that he directed that it should be moved to the Government House “so that people who would be screened and those that might be tuned back by security agents would not be offended.”

The President added, “The intimidating security would have affected worshippers if the service had taken place at St. Peter’s Anglican Church because they would be screened. That would certainly have elicited reactions. That’s why we relocated to this place (Gloryland Chapel, Government House).”

He lamented that he could not visit a lot of places in the state because security agents gave an excuse that such places were either not checked for his safety or that they were not a part his itinery.

Jonathan, who said he could not understand the reason for the heavy security presence, stated that he would have been asked to stay away from Bayelsa State if it (Bayelsa) had been unsafe.

He said, “If Bayelsa State is turbulent, I will be advised not to come; it is where they (security agents ) push you that you will go.

“If there is no peace in Bayelsa State, I will be stopped from coming here. But I need to see where the Federal Government can assist the state. That’s the purpose of my visits to all the states.

“When you see things yourself, you will appreciate them. If there’s peace in this state then we will get to where we want it to reach.”

Jonathan preached the need for peace and unity in the state and other parts of the country in order for development to take place.

He described the whole country as a human body which “if any part of it is sick, the rest cannot live in peace.”

Noting that election periods were often characterized by tension at the local, state and national levels, he advised those fighting because of political positions to shield their swords.

“Any time we conduct elections, there must be tension. Everybody want to be a councillor, at the national level, it is the same, but God knows who He has blessed at any particular time. God has a purpose for Bayelsa State, so we should stop fighting one another,” he said.

As the service went on, armed soldiers in full battle fatigue and riot policemen took strategic positions in different parts of Yenagoa while a military helicopter hovered over the Government House.

The President’s trip to Nembe to inaugurate a regional water project was canceled due to the heavy rainfall on Sunday morning. He also could not fly to Brass to inaugurate the Atlantic Beach resort on the island.

Jonathan had said at a town hall meeting in Yenagoa on Saturday that his administration would deliver on the proceedings arrived at during his interactions with people all the states he had visited.

He told the select audience that the meeting was meant for “the cross fertilisation of ideas” and urged those whose views were not acknowledged to write him.

“We are compiling the reactions from the various interest groups,” he said.

The president also responded to the issue of special roles for traditional rulers in the country, saying they had not been properly placed in the political landscape of the country.

Jonathan said, “We have to be careful of how we handle this. I don’t want to send an executive bill to the Senate. You have to measure the temperature of your environment before you do anything. In places like Japan, there’s no way you can discuss issues without mentioning traditional rulers.”

The President said the Federal Executive Council would use the last six weeks of the year to discuss how to move the nation forward through some radical changes.
