Nice piece. What are the options available for those who are not license in there home country.

If you aren't licensed from home but want to get licensed in Canada then you go for the CACB Academic certification. If you decide not to pursue a license in Canada at all but want to work with your architecture degree in an architectural firm then you can apply for positions such architectural designer, architectural technologist and CAD/BIM drafter.

Thank you very much for this. What about for those that had HND in Architecture?

I really don't know the certifications for those that have HND in architecture but I hear there is a bridging programme in Ontario for architectural technologist. You may want to find out more about that.

Eh? This is really a new thing.

If you don't mind please supply the full gist. Was it after the three weeks wait you got this response?

No special gist really.

Took the knowledge test as usual, passed and submitted my Nigerian driver's license. Went back after 2 weeks only to be told that my exemption was denied. A letter was given to me telling me that they couldn't authenticate my license and I can either get a letter from my country consulate in Ottawa or from the license issuing authority.

After which I can resubmit for exemption. That simple!

Are you sure it's original? Is your info on FRSC database? Go to frsc website and do like you want to renew your license. Put in the requested details and see the response.

It is original, My info is on the FRSC website. Checked it.

Wow! How did you go about paying for the CACB certification and how much? The option I saw was about $1850. Masters from Unilag.

Yes, that's the cost. I asked someone in Canada to pay for me with his credit card and sent the naira equivalent to his nigerian bank. It was that easy. You can do same.

When did you finish your masters?

Your question is a bit unclear. You can get a 2 bed apartment in SW or NW calgary from say $800 to over $5000 per month. Much depends on your taste and what type of apartment you are searching for. The area in those quadrant would also determine the cost. Are you searching for a 2bed in an older area or in a posh area? Are you searching for apartment in a newer building or older building? Is it plus utilities or inclusive of utilities? is the apartment fitted with high end materials or cheap finishings? Etc.
I would however say you can find something decent for $1200 plus utilities (meaning you will pay for utilities) if you look hard enough. Most times in Canada or most other developed countries, you basically get what you pay for). Keep that in mind.

Thank you.

Please my Calgary people, do you have any agents to help with house rentals. The ones i have been contacting on rentfasterdotcom and kijiji have not been giving favourable responses. Airbnb prices are not helping either.
My family is arriving first week in
June. Please i need your help.
Thank you .

Sorry about that. I too have had unfavourable response. Calgary bound next month. Keep trying, so I am doing.

My calgary people I will like to know how much the average price of a 2 bedroom apartment should be in NW or SW. Is CAD1500 not on the high side? Abi na so house they cost.

I totally agree. My Husband and I are both architects which is a regulated profession. In our research so far, we know we have to begin as Interns which is a 3 year program, of which before then We have to pay for academic certification which is about $1850, hence would be looking for the lowest level in a firm or working in a closely related job to survive. I so ready to do other things like being a new mum and crafting while my Hubby continues professionally. That said....please any architect or architect technologist here Calgary bound in July! Any tip will be appreciated!

Wish I had a tip for you. I am also an architect in Nigeria. Landing in Calgary next month. Paid for CACB certification, however yet to send my transcript because my school is delaying on that. You husband can start CACB too.

This is a really interesting concept and a good example of how architectural concepts should be developed. However, I don't know if the output best explains the original concept.

Also, are students now allowed to offer architectural services especially of a building this complicated? The student architect would need to work with other licensed and experienced architect to actualize this.

Like I said earlier, what I may fault in this concept development is how different the narrative is from the eventual output. Without reading the concept story, I would have thought that this was a big aquarium.

In as much as concepts can be abstract, you should also be able to grab it without much explanation.

You can read my articles on concept development here https://archccess.com/2018/04/what-is-concept-html/

You can also read the architecture design process here. https://archccess.com/2017/01/architectural-design-process-for-html/

Hi guys,

Has anyone used the Nipost option on Unilag's website when sending transcript to WES? Did it work? How long did it take?

Yes, it took 6weeks from when it was ready to get delivered plus the normal 3 weeks for transcript processing. Total: from application to delivery with nipost 9 weeks.
Career / Re: How Lucrative Is Bsc Building Compare To Bsc Architecture by Ehimen100: 3:15pm On Jan 29, 2018
Both courses are good but what matters is what you passion is and what you want to make out of it.

Building is very similar to civil engineering it's just that your focus is building and not civil works. In terms of job opportunities (where to work) building has more and diverse opportunities than architecture. Even when you choose to practice building (being a building contractor) you are very likely to make more money than people who practice pure architectural consultancy. Also don't forget that architecture in Nigeria today is currently and severely plagued with quacks (draftsmen and untrained people who pretend to be architects and practice illegally) and this has reduced the opportunities of young architects. If you are the kind of guy who like to move and coordinate things, have eyes for details, love building things (construction) and know how to manage people and resources you are in the right profession and on your way to wealth.

On the other hand architecture is a gentle man profession but a very prestigious one. Pure architectural consultancy may not guarantee enormous wealth but it guarantees comfort. If you love the practice of architecture then it guarantees job satisfaction and fulfilment especially when you works are getting built (of course by the builders making all the money). But the real beauty of architecture is that it allows you to do several other things as a result of your architectural knowledge and this is where architecture may surpass building. It's legal for architects to execute design and build projects (the architects designs and builds his designs) but it's illegal for builders to handle architectural design before building.

Read the article to know 19 other things you can do with an architecture degree and knowledge.

@Ehimen100 @Elle78 ,how far?Any headway with WES verification in spite of the (Unilag NASU) strike?Hoping to hear from u guys.

Nothing oh, WES still awaits verification, meaning Unilag hasn't reply. What about you?

@Elle78, are u sure your verification has got to Lag?If Yes,pls how did you know despite the strike?

@Ehimen100 ,how far with your verification?Have u heard from WES?

I haven't heard from WES, meaning my verification hasn't been addressed and this is the third week. The NASU strike may be the reason for delay though.

Also I heard (unconfirmed though) that Unilag will only respond via email after they receive the hardcopy mail from wes and this can take up to 3 weeks.

Hi, Please I seriously need help with my transcript application at Unilag. Can you please inbox me to discuss better? Thank you. Much appreciated!

why not share your question here,

besides there are far more experienced people than myself here, you can never tell who will give you the exact info you need.

Let me understand you clearly, have you paid the mandatory 18,500(2,500 for processing and 16,000 for Courier)?

If you have done that, are you at the stage of waiting for Unilag to reply WES?

Kindly state the stage your hubby is; because my own ECA is on going and I'm only waiting for Unilag to respond to WES(I.e. verify the documents already received). Pls note that WES has acknowledged the receipts of my Transcript(sent by Unilag) and Certificate (sent by me).

your question wasn't directed at me though but I am at this same stage.

for transcript I pay 2k5 for processing and 400 for postal, it got to wes after 4 weeks.

wes has sent my documents to Unilag for verification. A lot of people here have said the verification is free so I will wait for a week or 2 to confirm that if not will have to pay as stated on the transcript portal.
Travel / Re: Canadian Express Entry/Federal Skilled Workers Program-Connect Here Part 2 by Ehimen100: 9:41am On Nov 22, 2017
Dannyko:
It's not free. You will ,first of all, apply to WES online for your ECA,then you will go to Unilag to apply for your transcript to be sent to WES.Unilag will request that you pay 18,500 in the bank(I used Ecobank beside the bookshop). Before you make payment,go to the business centre to generate payment advice(I used the biz centre inbetween Ecobank and bookshop) then proceed to the bank. After making payment,go back to the biz centre to process your transcript online(the lady collected 1k from me).

Once you collect your print out, make a photocopy and go to the Records office(in Senate building),try to talk to anyone who could help fast track it for you.

Remember to take note of your WES Reference Number, you will need it.

**Verification is free ,it's only your transcripts you will pay for**

*Also, you are required to send a copy of your certificate to WES(I faxed mine via Hellofax - I read all the instructions on this thread.Try to search the thread, you will find the procedure.)
Hope this helps!

Properties / How A Quack Can Become An Architect. by Ehimen100: 10:48pm On Jan 01, 2017
Quackery according to Wikipedia is the promotion of fraudulent or ignorant medical practice. In reality the practice of quackery cuts across almost all professions in the world. Today one of the badly hit professions in Nigeria is Architecture.

How to know who a quack is?

Enumerating them in categories from 1 to 5;

1. When professionals such as civil engineers, project managers, urban planners, estate valuers and surveyors, quantity surveyors, interior designers etc. add architectural services to their practice, then that’s quackery.

2. When a fully or partially trained architecture student/graduate with either ND, HND, B.Sc., M.Sc. or Ph.D. degrees in Architecture practice architecture unsupervised and without license or registration with the professions’ statutory regulatory body (ARCON), then that’s quackery. Please go to this link to know more on ARCON.

3. When artisans and individuals who have acquired architectural and construction skills on site such as mason, carpenters, foremen, suppliers, contractors etc. practice architecture, then that’s quackery.

4. When untrained individuals who have acquired knowledge and skill only in the use of architectural design software such as AutoCAD, Revit etc. practice architecture, then that quackery.
5. When individuals who are foreign trained and/or licensed practice architecture in different country where they have no license.

How then do you become an Architect?

Referring to the categories earlier mentioned; Category 1, 2 and 3 will be required to acquire a degree in architecture, then apply to be licensed by ARCON; Category 2 and 5 will be required to vet their architecture degree with ARCON then apply for a License to practice architecture. The process of acquiring an architecture degree is somewhat straightforward but that of registering with ARCON needs to be explained.

ARCON as the statutory body do not work alone, they have empowered the Nigerian Institute of Architects (NIA) to carry out some responsibility on thier behalf such as the conduct of the professional practice exams that will qualify you to be licensed; therefore you have to work closely with both bodies. ARCON has two levels of registration; provisional and full registration while NIA has two; associate and full membership registration. Today the former is a perquisite to the later therefore the first thing to do is to contact NIA to begin the process. For those in category 5 you should contact ARCON first if you are foreign licensed.

Webmasters / Re: Cost Of Running A Blog by Ehimen100: 8:08pm On Dec 31, 2016
It depends on what you want to do with your blog, blogger is free, I don't know about WordPress but I hear they have some free blog services too, so you won't need to pay for that. Though if you want something unique and customized then you will need to design it specially and pay. if you use the dot extension on blogger then that's free, but if you want your own domain name you will need to pay for that as well.

I got my domain name for 4,600, I use blogger and I budget 5,000 on data monthly. that's all for now. I believe you can start from here too. What you need at the start is to focus on quality content and start small.

You don't necessarily need to start off with paid advertising for your blog, why not build content and understand your niche first. That's my blog link under, at least you can compare it to the amount I use to set it up. It's an architecture blog.
