Politics / Samsung Opens New Academy In Lagos. by EkoAtlantic: 6:06pm On Aug 10, 2013
Samsung Electronics West Africa, in partnership with the Eko Project, a World Bank assisted initiative aimed at improving the quality of public secondary education, has launched the third Samsung Electronics Engineering Academy in Lagos as part of its goal to develop 10,000 electronics engineers across Africa by 2015.

The Academy, located within the Agidimgbi Technical College, Ikeja, was opened by the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babatunde Fashola SAN in company of commissioners of education, science and technology and other senior officials of the State including Samsung system leadership and partners in Nigeria.

During the commissioning, Governor Babatunde Fashola said there is an urgent need to develop technical skills in students, noting that existing technicians are ill- equipped to repair new appliances because they lack access to modern technology. According to him, “Upcoming technicians must be exposed to cutting edge technology if they are to remain competitive. The ability to repair the latest technology is key to wealth creation for technicians”.

Governor Fashola commended Samsung for partnering with the Lagos State Government on the Academy, stressing that the college is not only a knowledge hub but will also open up job opportunities for the people of Lagos, which is in line with his administration’s drive to create jobs, especially for young citizens.

Speaking at the event, the Managing Director, Samsung Electronics West Africa, Nicholas Shin said, “Our aim is to promote co-operation, innovation, wealth creation and to facilitate thought leadership in the communities in which we operate in response to their real needs and conditions”.

"The Samsung Engineering Academy programme is our flagship CSR initiative undertaken in response of the need to develop a skilled workforce of technicians who will become service experts empowered to create wealth. Samsung, as a quality service-oriented company, aims to link CSR activities with our business goal of sustaining our level of innovation. This can only be achieved if we invest in quality education to empower the youth”, he adds.

The Samsung Electronics Engineering Academy, equipped with the latest electronics, is aimed at addressing the dearth of technical and engineering skills in Nigeria by providing hands-on, vocational skills training for secondary school students. Students will go through a year’s program in engineering skills, aligned to their technical school’s curriculum.

The Academy will initially admit 60 students. Upon completion of the programme, graduating students are automatically eligible for an internship at Samsung's channel partners. Outstanding performers will have the opportunity to work as independent service technicians or employees in the company’s retail channel outlets. They also stand a chance of being selected to participate in a year-long leadership opportunity at Samsung Electronics’ headquarters in South Korea as part of the 100 African Young Leaders program.

Samsung started the first phase of academies in South Africa in March 2011. The South African Academy officially ended its pilot phase when the first class of students graduated in January, 2012. In February, a second Academy was launched in Kenya.

Other examples of Samsung Africa’s education initiatives include the world-first Solar Powered Internet School model designed to address the issue of rural connectivity, and the Samsung E-learning Centres aimed at enhancing learning and teaching through the use of modern technology.

Along with the Samsung Electronics Engineering Academies, these programs are part of the company’s global ‘Hope for Children’ initiative, which places a strategic focus on bringing attention to the worldwide need for childhood education and healthcare in an effort to improve communities worldwide.

Travel / GOL Airline To Begin Flights To Lagos by EkoAtlantic: 6:18am On Aug 09, 2013
FRIDAY, 09 AUGUST 2013
Following the formalisation of its papers with the Nigerian government, Sao Paulo based low cost Brazilian airline-GOL is to begin flight operations between Lagos and Sao Paulo.

An official of the carrier who spoke to The Guardian in Lagos on Tuesday disclosed that the Ministry of Aviation and all other relevant agencies had given their approval.

The carrier operates state-of-the-art Boeing aircraft with a new and modern fleet, GOL’s operations are differentiated by reduced maintenance costs and low fuel consumption, which translates into high use and efficiency rates for the company.

It would be recalled that GOL purchased VARIG in 2007 and for eleven years, GOL has been driving the Brazilian aviation market to develop, always presenting innovative and pioneering products, services and processes. The firm has made air travel in Brazil and in South America affordable.

The airline currently offers extensive and convenient route network in South America and the Caribbean, with almost 950 flights a day to over 63 destinations, domestic and international, in 14 countries.

Combined with operational partnerships with foreign and domestic companies, GOL’s route network is among the best for clients that want to travel to Brazil, within Brazil, or from Brazil.

GOL can offer such efficient services because it has a business model based on structures, systems and controls that enhance the quality, high technology, safety and standardization of its fleet, as well as the motivation and productivity of its team. With a constant focus on reducing costs, the company’s strategy is defined by profitable growth through a low-cost and high quality structure for providing service to clients.

In accordance with its corporate objectives, GOL once again revolutionsed Brazilian aviation when it acquired VRG Linhas Aéreas, operating the VARIG brand, on March 28, 2007. The acquisition was one of the most important steps in GOL’s history, allowing it to expand its market coverage and operating capacity.

ShymX: Impressive!

However, they need to spread the love to the other SW states. Lagos is fine and Ogun is on the come up. It won't be a bad idea to create massive industrial estates in the remaining SWern states.

SW gatts the juice!

Yes, they are spreading developmental ideas that are suitable for each state in southwest. Industrial estates thrives better in Lagos, Ogun and Oyo. Ekiti and Osun deals more with agriculture which the governors there are really investing on. Ondo is also doing great in agricultural programs, mineral extraction and little of industrialization. Note that Nigeria's biggest refinery is to be built in Ondo state by Dangote, worth $8billion. I wish Ondo can also buid her mini sea port(she's not landlocked) to reduce the pressure on the one in Lagos.

Dangote to site $8bn refinery in Olokola FTZ
Indications emerged on Wednesday that the $8bn refinery proposed by Africa's richest man and President, Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, would be located at the Olokola Free Trade Zone, Ondo State.

A senior official of the company, who asked not to be named because he was not authorised to speak on the matter, told our correspondent that the refinery would be located in the OFTZ.

One of the factors considered for the location of the refinery, according to the source, is that it is the biggest deep seaport in the country and other big industries are located there; besides, Ondo is one of the oil producing states in the country.

The source added that stable crude oil supply was also a vital element in the choice of the location for the refinery because Chevron and a number of other oil producers had oil fields in the oil-rich region of the state.

On why Lagos was not chosen, industry analysts said though the state was a coastal state, Dangote would have to build pipelines to transfer crude from oil fields to the refinery, thereby incurring additional expenses.

AMID  growing controversy  over the evacuation of some non-Lagosians from Lagos State to states of their origin, Osun State government, on Wednesday, received 46 destitues evacuated from Lagos State.

Receiving the destitue at the National Youth Development Centre, Ode-Omu, on Wednesday, the Special Adviser to Governor Rauf Aregbesola, on Youths, Sports and Special Needs, Honourable Biyi Odunlade, said the state government welcomed the request of the Lagos State government to evacuate the affected people, because “we are responsible.”

He hinted that over 100 destitutes had been repatriated to Osun  from Lagos, Oyo and other places since the current administration came on board, adding “we were invited by Lagos State to come and pick our brothers and sisters, who are destitutes and 46 persons were brought, out of which we discovered that just 26 were actually indigenes of the state, comprising 19 men, five women and two children, who were from different local governments in the state.

According to Odunlade, “it is our responsibility to take the matter up, as the governor believes in quick and responsive government; that is why the state government insisted that anytime Lagos invites  us for their evacuation, we should respond in good time.
“However, it is unfortunate that most states did not respond to the exercise, which is not good enough, because these people are part of us; we have their relations with us here.”

Odunlade attributed the present harsh situation in the country to the increasing number of destitute in the country, observing that most of them were abandoned by their parents and relations due to their health issues.
He  stated that the Osun State government was ready to take good care of the received destitute, both medically and mentally, in order for them to live normal lives and later reunite with their families.

While noting that Osun State government does not discriminate in rehabilitation of the destitute, Odunlade, however, maintained that the government would not tolerate street-begging, saying “we have started handling their cases and would not relent until they get better.”
Concerning the two children, Odunlade disclosed that the Department of Youth and Social Welfare would take care of them.

Giving a statistical breakdown of the destitute brought back to the state, Odunlade, said on April 27, 2010, 47 beggars and destitutes were returned from  Lagos to Osogbo.  On October 4, 2010, 13 persons were again brought form Lagos and reunited with their relations in the state.

Aare, there are roads from Lagos mainland linking Ondo. E.g.Ikorodu-Ijebu Ode-Ore road, Lagos-Ibadan-Ile Ife-Akure road, Ikorodu-Shagam-Ore road. I don't think there is need now to construct any road directly from Lekki to Ondo. Most of the Islands in Ondo are creeks and not where real settlements are. Ondo's cities and town(I.e. Akure, Ondo town and Ore) are far away from the ocean unlike Lekki.

Politics / Samsung To Locate Vocational Academy In Ogun by EkoAtlantic: 9:51pm On Aug 05, 2013
August 5, 2013
Going by the request of the Ogun State government towards the location of Samsung Electronics Academy in Ogun State, coupled with the mission to empower Nigerian youths on engineering and entrepreneurship as part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR), Samsung Electronics is planning to site its engineering academy in the state.

Victor Odukwe, business manager, Samsung West Africa Limited, disclosed that the electronics firm was considering the location of its engineering academy in Ogun State after the completion of such academy that was ongoing in Ekiti State, saying the firm desired to contribute value to the lives of young jobless Nigerians.

According to Odukwe, the proposed engineering academy is committed to empower youths through provision of skills acquisition in engineering and entrepreneurship that will address problem of unemployment and poverty, as the company has taken the step, as part of its CSR to create wealth for Nigerians to be self-reliant.

The business manager, who received the Ogun State Technical and Vocational Education Board that carried out a facility tour recently at the Samsung Electronics headquarters in Lagos, declared that the board member had taken a right step by making a request for the location of its engineering academy in the state, adding that the presence of Samsung in the state would not only instil skills acquisition in her youths, but would also create wealth.

Speaking earlier, Doyin Ogunbiyi, chairman, State Technical and Vocational Education Board, revealed that the board made the request based on the recommendation of World Bank that required the state to develop technical and vocational education that would develop the economy.

Ogunbiyi said the World Bank recommendation on vocational and technical education, coupled with the state government’s desire to empower jobless youths through engineering and entrepreneurship prompted the proposed establishment of the engineering academy in the state, adding that the planned skills acquisition academy would make the youths to be self-reliant and therefore, reduce unnecessary dependence and poverty.

She, however, commended the business and economy initiatives of Samsung Electronics Limited for investing in the state economy, urging other multinationals to spread their CSR to the state, just as she promised that the state government would continue to partner genuine, both local and foreign investors, in human capacity development.
