Hunger does not discriminate my brother. It hits stomachs of all ages. Even a 17 year old, if big and strong enough, can probably join political thuggery in Nigeria. RIP to the dead young man.

Funny enough, the peanut they get after their whole display won't prevent them from going for the same thuggery job after they've spent all. Also, their thuggery doesn't guarantee victory for their lords.
Then what's the point?

• Police kill seven suspected kidnappers of Ejigbo council chairman
THE Lagos State Police Command has smashed the kidnapping gang, which allegedly abducted the Chairman of Ejigbo Local Council Development Area, Mr. Kehinde Bamgbetan and released him a few days after an unspecified ransom was paid.

The gang was sent to their early grave by a combined team of State Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) led by Superintendent Abba Kyari at Agbara area of Lagos in their detention camp shortly after they also abducted an Indian victim.

The syndicate had brought the Indian, who was kidnapped last night, to their camp in the early hours of Monday.

The Indian victim was said to have been kidnapped in Ikoyi area of Lagos in the early hours of yesterday on his way back from a night-club in Ikoyi.

He was rescued unhurt by the Special Anti Robbery Squad of the Lagos State Police Command led by Kyari.

Seven of the kidnappers died during an exchange of gunfire with the police while two were arrested alive.

The police team carefully executed the plan to ensure that the Indian who was held in their custody came out unhurt. They surreptitiously gathered intelligence on the particular room the Indian was camped and ensured that their bullets did not get to that direction.

The Indian was eventually rescued unhurt after the seven suspected abductors were gunned down.

The other two suspects were, however, shot in the leg.

Police said they ensured that two were alive so that the world could hear their story.

One of the suspects, Uchenna Nwanu, who was caught alive told newsmen that he did not know that his boss was into kidnapping.

“Himself and the wife told me that they were into drug trafficking. I was surprised to discover that he was the leader of the kidnapping gang,” he said.

Recovered from the gang were four AK 47 rifles, 28 AK 47 fully loaded magazines, over 1,000 live ammunition of AK 47, army uniforms, one Honda CRV Sports Utility Vehicle with Reg. No. ABC106 AE and a Nissan Pathfinder with Reg. No. AGL730 AZ.

The two arrested suspects- 27-year- old Ogbonna Emenike and 25-year-old Uchenna Nwanyu, were paraded alongside the bodies of their deceased members by the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Police Command, Umar Manko yesterday afternoon.

According to Manko:  “Based on painstaking follow-up, surveillance and tracking of Ghana- based Nigerian kidnappers who kidnapped Ejigbo Local Council Chairman, Kehinde Bamigbetan, a sitting Federal High Court Judge and other notable individuals in Lagos, O/C SARS, SP Abba Kyari led a team of crack detectives to a suburb in Agbara, Ogun State, where the kidnappers have their camp.”

“After 72 hours of waiting in an ambush, Kyari and team cordoned and stormed the house where all the kidnappers had gathered at 3.00am. Seven of the kidnappers were fatally wounded during heavy gun battle between the kidnappers and SARS operatives,“ he stated.

Manko said that two of the gang members were arrested alive, adding that arms and ammunition including military uniforms, charms and operational vehicles were recovered from the gang.

Politics / Re: Controlling Lagos' Borders... by EkoAtlantic: 7:46pm On Jun 24, 2013
Aside Lagosisans on mainland that reside in serene estates and other Islanders, most employed lagosians will prefer to settle in surrounding states and cities while they work in Lagos, if there is a fast and reliable means of transportation. If this is done, lagos city won't be as crowded as it is since it's only office hours that working people stay in the city, they leave for neighboring states after work hours which makes the city less crowded.
If at all a thinking government is in power, this isn't a big deal.
Also, non Lagos indegenes who contribute nothing to the state economy should be kindly shown the way back to their various villages and states which they migrated from and prevent further flux of migrants who have nothing to do in the city.

Every hour, a hundred(100) people move into Lagos permanently.
....
Monthly, 67,000 people move into Lagos permanently.
Yearly, 806,400 people move into Lagos permanently.
Add that up to the nos. Of birth from the present millions of mothers in the city.
Yet, she's the smallest state of the federation.
Kilode na?!
Something must be done urgently.

Good one from Premium times for alerting the slow and non-thinking federal government.
This is what the press should've been doing for years.

Channels TV also did something similar months ago about the police academy in Lagos. They need to keep it up.
If at all the top government is not reasonable enough to know and do what's right, the media should point it out and the opposition showing them the way it's done.

As a PDP guy, I would actually like to see ACN continue to run Lagos so that a change in parties doesn't take Lagos off course. Continuity is NEEDED.

It's time for other Nigerian cities to begin stepping up from their slumber as Lagos has been. Nigeria will never develop if Kaduna, Onitsha, Kano, Port Harcourt and Ibadan don't wake up

Those two cities have been slumbering for years. They've got the potentials to be great.

Okonjo-iweala Opens Up, Says Nigeria Economy In Danger

On Monday, June 10, at the third round of the 2013 ministerial platform in Abuja, Coordinating Minister for the Economy and Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, spoke glowingly about the Nigerian economy, saying the fundamentals were strong and that the economy was buoyant beyond danger.

But a few hours later, on Tuesday, when all the doors were closed, the minister sang a different tune. She told her colleagues in government point blank that the Nigerian economy is shaky despite the official fundamentals and that drastic steps are needed to save it from collapse.

Mrs Okonjo-Iweala spoke at the 50th meeting of the 15-member Federal Government Economic Implementation Team held behind closed-doors at the presidential villa.
The implementation team is headed by the minister, and meets every week. It was established by President Goodluck Jonathan to oversee the effective implementation of decisions of the Economic Management Team chaired by the president.

Other members of the committee are the Ministers of Petroleum Resources, Power, Agriculture, Trade & Investment, Works and Health as well as the Ministers of State for Finance and Health, the Chief Economic Adviser to the President, the Special Adviser to the President (Monitoring & Evaluation), the Director-General of the Budget Office, the Director General of the Bureau of Public Enterprise and a Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria.

At Tuesday’s meeting, a presidency source said, the minister painted a gloomy picture of the economy and hinted that there was an urgent need for “stringent budgetary measures” to arrest the downward slide.

Although the meeting was convened to review the government’s plan to create 3.5 million jobs in the agriculture sector and consider the report of a subcommittee on the automotive industry, Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala could not hold back on the disturbing prospect of the economy.

The minister explained that crude oil production now hovers around a disturbing 1.3 million barrels per day,  a figure far lower than that seen during the height of the protracted militancy in the Niger Delta.
The Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC,  had on April 18 reported a drop in crude oil production in the first quarter of 2013, January to March, which cost Nigeria a loss of crude oil revenue to the tune of $1.23 billion (N190 billion). That loss is now set to continue and the country might not be able to meet its obligation to its customers.
Mrs Okonjo-Iweala also informed the meeting that crude oil theft had continued unabated and was at its highest level ever despite the best effort by government to stem the tide.

Nigeria is estimated to lose about $6 billion annually to crude theft and the development, the minister lamented, is now severely hurting the economy.
The administration has paid several billions of naira to former Niger Delta militants to guard oil installations and block oil theft. But if anything, the situation has worsened.
At the meeting, the minister also predicted a further dip in national revenue following the increase in shale gas production around the world, a situation she said would definitely have serious adverse effect on oil prices and sales.

Shale gas, according to Wikipedia, is natural gas found trapped within shale formations and has become an increasingly important source of natural gas in the United States and the rest of the world.
Shale gas now provides over  20 percent of U.S. natural gas need and that figure is set to rise to 46 percent by 2035, according to the U.S. government’s Energy Information Administration.

Mrs Okonjo-Iweala hinted that as more and more countries depend on shale gas, the demand for Nigeria’s oil and gas would drop, with a corresponding dramatic drop in revenue.

The minister also lamented that the situation with the economy was not helped by the lack of accountability at the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, saying the corporation had refused to render returns for its share of crude oil for local refining.

She thereafter informed her colleagues that beginning with the 2014 budget, there would be stringent budgetary measures and a lot of belt tightening within the government, our sources say.
She did not provide details of what the drastic measures would be, said one of our sources.
Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala has never been this frank in the open about the economy and its gloomy prospects.

She has said on several occasions that the economy was buoyant and strong, with its outlook remaining great, despite the current global economic uncertainty.
On Monday, she spoke along that line, asking Nigerians to ignore critics who have continued to insist that despite government claims, the economy was not in good shape.

Let me propose a different point of view.

When Awo and Bello resisted the idea of Nigeria, guess who wanted Nigeria at all cost? Azikiwe
The first coup was organized and executed by officers who were mostly Igbo
Guess who ended regionalism with Decree 34 and centralized the government in Nigeria? Ironsi
And guess who said Igbo would export civil servants to the rest of Nigeria after Ironsi promulgated Decree 34? Ojukwu

And you need to educate yourself about migration patterns. Do more Americans migrate to Mexico or do more Mexicans migrate to America? Migration patterns are influenced by economic and social opportunities. So it is foolish for 10 Mexicans to migrate into the US and boast that they are going to compete against Americans. You can't use opportunities created by someone to better your lot and then claim to be better than him. You guys delude yourselves too much with this 'we are more competitive than others BS'. You can't judge others based on your own values.

When immigrants move into a new territory the residents are usually defensive and its not because they fear immigrants, it is because by simple logic, more people in an area will reduce resources for the original residents. If 5 people live in a 3 bedroom apartment and another 3 people move in - is it not obvious that food would have to be shared, bathrooms would have to be shared, bedrooms would have to be shared, even watching TV will increase conflict.

You took your time to lecture these ignoramous buffoons.

This working paper provides research findings emanating from the De-Agrarianisation and Rural Employment (DARE) Research Programme, coordinated by the African Studies Centre, Leiden. The aim of the Programme was to examine, from a multidisciplinary perspective, the changes in size and significance of the peasant population in sub-Saharan African countries and to draw attention to the new labour patterns and unfolding rural-urban relations now taking place. This paper focuses on Nigeria and chronicles the patterns of long-term diversification that are observable in the cocoa farming community of Alade in Idanre Local Government Area of Ondo State. After some historical background information on cocoa cultivation and government policies up to 1970, when Nigeria began to experience its oil boom, it looks at the impact of the oil boom of the 1970s and the Structural Adjustment Programme (SAP), introduced in 1986, on cocoa farming before turning to the situation of household production and reproduction in the aftermath of SAP, and the internal dynamics of Alade households. Finally, it looks at the extent and trends of diversification of livelihood strategies within the farming community. The conclusion is that SAP has led to a revival of cocoa farming in Nigeria and that farming households have responded to new opportunities opened up to them by adjusting their use of household resources. However, the benefits of this revival have not been evenly spread
