Politics / Re: The Real Drivers Of the Lagos Economy by EkoAtlantic: 4:51pm On Aug 01, 2013
mandarin: What Lagos will be missing? a whole lot:
1. A huge population blow will bring down economic activities especially where the Igbo is paramount - trading
2. The consumer population will reduce and think of house rents and may be foods prices coming down
3. Transports revenues will drop so also is local govt. revenues that take a whole lot of their revenues from the open market traders
4.General reduction in economic activities due to mass emigration may be up to 15% of the total GDP

POSSIBILITIES
1. Opening opportunities in the imports/exports sector will be taken up by remaining population
2. Trading gaps that will open opportunities for remaining population
3. Net migration for the reverse migration will provide a huge population
4. Fundamentals of Lagos economy will remain i.e.. industries etc
Lagos will emerge as less populated and may be more organized and relaxed and if the target is to service the north will become better if corruption is checked.

Not if igbos leave Lagos, but if any ethnic group leaves Lagos.

Uchek: ...I am conducting a study on how ethnicity affect our response to issues and events

Is it possible for ethnicity not to affect our responses on issues when you have people of different mentality, ideology and distinct ways of life forcefully joined together for the interest of greedy oyinbo commandos?!

But it got dirtier when those four easterners orchestrated the first ever coup in this country. Killing the rulers of the West and the North, leaving theirs in the east, blocking the niger bridge connecting the West and the North, elevating their eastern general "Ironsi" as the national military ruler and finally appointing easterners as second and third in command.

There wouldn't have been any dream of Biafra if those four generals didn't display an extreme act of tribalism, which lead to retaliation: hatred and killing of their tribe men by the Northerners, an act Ojukwu wasn't cool with.

The questions should have been, why didn't Ojukwu remember Awolowo was in prison, not until he(Ojukwu) thought Awolowo would have been a tool in achieving his "personal" dream?
Why didn't Ojukwu backoff when he realized seven mercenaries and the 4000 civilian converted soldiers he had boasted of weren't enough to free his people, but rather went on exile leaving his people hopeless?

Why was an easterner(can't remember his name now) responsible for the breakaway of mid-west from western region, hence weakening the west(indirectly the whole south) and empowering the North with their already massive land and population intentionally created by the oyibos?

Onlytruth: The fact remains that if Lagos state is tired of the Nigerian project, it should go ahead and secede today.
What Lagos is doing is CRIMINAL VIOLATION of Nigerian citizens rights.

When Igbo got tired of Nigeria in 1967, we sacrificed 2 million of our people to try to secede. To me that is a demonstration of seriousness and bravery.

This cowardly backdoor secession won't work.

We Ndigbo really should hold the IG accountable because it seems that the IG is constantly making NIGERIAN POLICE men available for these types of open violation of the Nigerian constitution.

Our governors should hold Jonathan's feet to fire over the IG's indirect support for discrimination against innocent Nigerians by cowards who can't speak directly.

Azikiwe an ibo man dragged us into this dirty marriage at first, by aligning with the North. Another story please!

*Governor Fasola:
Let the igbos fix 'biafra'. We are tired of the igbos committing bad stuffs in the west. If we have any westerner destitute in Igbo land, please send them back asap. Be careful and honest when you do that because we have all your people building houses all over Lagos etc and westerners are not allowed to do same in Igbo land. No problem about that, we are good people here. but tired of the igbos atrocities.

*akara:
But on a serious note... My apologies to my Ndigbo brothers but Lagos and south-west is getting too over-populated with Ndigbos.. Ndigbos need to develop their homelands, and reduce immigration to Lagos...

Ndigbos need to hold their state governors accountable, Lagos state is not receiving FG allocation that is commensurate with the population in the state, while your various Ndigbo Governors are showing off kangaroo projects with no real development initiatives for Ndigbos..

Pls I am a yorubaman, Nigerians of every race and tribe are living in poverty and hardship.. But I am not a politician, so I have to start my contributions from yorubaland..

*MK SocioPolitical:
When there is not enough food to eat, brothers will start fighting brothers. A country is sweet to belong to when there is quality of life within it, otherwise, we will relate to each other based on our differences. Those who we elect to lead and represent us, spend all their time abusing us and committing illegalities against us. Our Police and Armed Robbers - no difference. Our army has only ever raised its guns in anger against fellow Nigerians. Recently our senate has confirmed that within our constitution, it is ok to marry under aged girls and thereby defile them by engaging in paedophilia. Everywhere u turn, hope has been stolen and opportunity murdered. Our leaders look and act so differently from us that we wonder if they are Nigerians. Even when we turn to God, dodgy and scam artist pastors block the way by engaging in false prohecies and false ministries designed to take our last dough. Na Wah Oh!

*Amadi Ikwechegh:
I guess what Lagos state government did was to drop them at the nearest access point to their hometowns thereby saving them some transport fare. At least the one from Ebonyi state is already closer home, same with Imo state. Aaahhh (scratching my head) my headache now is for the people from the north, it is a long mile from home though, but I guess the Lagos state government know that their people normally bring in onions and goats to head bridge hence their decision.

Now what is remaining is for the governments of the other states to reciprocate. Starting with Peter Obi start rounding up all the non indigenes in your state and start shipping them to Sagamu, from there they can find their way.... IDIOTS!

I'm not against this because of hundreds of crimes ibos bring from their states to SW, hence increasing crime rate in southwest.

The briton that was kidnapped in Lagos on Monday was the handiwork of the ibos, same with the wife of one honorable like that in one of the SW states.
A 25-year-old man, Chukwuemeka Benson, has been arrested for allegedly kidnapping a British expatriate in Lagos State.
The suspect was said to have been arrested by a combined team of police detectives attached to the State Intelligence Bureau (SIB) and the State Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) at Okokomaiko area of Ojo, Lagos State, where he had allegedly gone to collect N7.5 million, being the ransom sum demanded.
Another member of the gang also identified as Ugochukwu escaped with bullet wounds, it was gathered.
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Umar Manko, while addressing newsmen gave the name of the Briton as Dickson Lee.
He said the victim who came into Nigeria on July 16, 2013, from Amsterdam was rescued from the criminals' hideout at Okota area of the metropolis.
Manko who used the forum to advised members of the public to desist from paying ransom to kidnappers, said the gang attacked their victim at Mafolokun area of Oshodi.
According to him, the driver of the vehicle escaped with bullet wounds, while the assailants drove away with their victim.
"Based on the report made at area G, Mushin, the police swung into action. The victim was rescued four days after he was kidnapped. The Briton who looked pale and sick has been released to go for medical treatment," he added.
Explaining how the police were able to track the suspects, Manko stated that the police encouraged the victim's relatives to open negotiation with the suspected kidnappers, while the GSM number used by them was tracked.
Manko stated further that the payment of ransom by victims' friends and relations is making kidnapping to appear lucrative to criminals.
He added that efforts are ongoing to track down other fleeing members of the gang.

Politics / Lagos Dumps Beggars, Homeless In Onitsha by EkoAtlantic: 1:17am On Jul 25, 2013

[size=14pt]2013-07-24 23:00:12
No fewer than 70 beggars and the homeless were on Wednesday dumped at the Upper Iweka Bridge, Onitsha, Anambra State.

Agents of the Lagos State Government reportedly brought the destitute to Onitsha.

The destitute told journalists that they were dumped about 3am at Upper Iweka after being detained in Ikorodu, Lagos, for over six months for alleged wandering and other minor offences by the Lagos State Kick Against Indiscipline officials.

The destitute said they were brought to Onitsha in four buses, escorted by riot policemen.

One of them, Mr. Osondu Mbuto, from Ohaozara in Ebonyi State and a petty trader in Lagos, said he was arrested by the Lagos State Government officials while going to his shop on December 18, 2012.

Mbuto added that the Lagos State Government officials were in company with some policemen.

The Chairman of Nigeria Red Cross Society in the South-East, Dr. Peter Katchy, described the action of the Lagos State officials as condemnable.

He said, "It's very deplorable; it's very disheartening that a state in the Federal Republic of Nigeria will bundle people, who are not even indigenes of Anambra State, and dump them under the flyover at Upper Iweka in Onitsha.

"Many of the people, we have interviewed are not indigenes of Anambra State. Some of them are from Ebonyi State; some are from Imo State among other states.

"It is an insult to Anambra State. We shall draw the attention of the governor of Anambra State to ask the reason for such an invasion of his territory.

"We will find out why Lagos State should invade Anambra State territory; and why Lagos State should dump people here and leave them helpless.

"We are here on humanitarian purposes and in response to an emergency. From  what we discovered here, this is a human emergency and a human callousness."

Katchy, however, promised that the society would move the destitute to the Anambra State Social Welfare Centre in Onitsha South Local Government for rehabilitation.

The Lagos State Government had dumped another set of beggars at Upper Iweka late last year.

Calls made to the mobile phone of the Lagos State Commissioner for Information, Mr. Lateef Ibirogba, for his reaction, did not go through.

He also did not respond to a text message sent to him by one of our correspondents.

Politics / Lagos Commences Power Generation From Organic Wastes by EkoAtlantic: 11:35am On Jul 18, 2013
Gboyega Akinsanmi

The Lagos State Government  Wednesday said its waste-to-energy project
had started generating electricity, which it said was currently being run at a demonstration centre in Ikosi market, Ketu area of the state.

The state government also said the bigger waste-to-energy project located at Olusosun land-filled site was being currently capped to trap methane, which it also said would put an end to the offensive odour in the area.

The Managing Director of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA),
Mr. Ola Oresanya, disclosed this to THISDAY in an interactive session, saying the bigger waste-to-energy project was already 50 per cent completed.

At the session, Oresanya explained that the state “has started generating electricity from wastes. At Ikosi market, we already have a demonstration centre where wastes from the market are processed to generate electricity.

“The bigger ones are located at Olusosun landfill site. Olusosun is now being properly capped to trap the methane and this means the offensive odour from the site will be history once this stage is completed.

“The infrastructure components are being installed at present and soon, the turbines will arrive, but we cannot set a timeline from the completion yet.”

The LAWMA boss added that the waste management sector had been a
blessing to the state and its residents at large, noting that more 524, 000 people have been engaged directly and indirectly in the business of waste management.

According to him, for now, those who are on the payroll of LAWMA are
about 24,000. Those who benefit directly or indirectly from waste management are indeed huge. “If we use the estimate of one person to 15 beneficiaries, we would be talking of about 500,000 people.”

The managing director therefore explained that the statistics definitely “gives us a picture of the size of that economy. It is a huge economy and if well managed, it can be a tool for social development and reform.”

He explained the state was unrelenting in its effort to build 20 transfer-loading stations, out of which he said two had been completed; one currently under construction with a plan to start constructing another one in Alimosho.

He added that the state government no longer wanted refuse dump sites within the metropolis, noting that all refuse collected “will be taken to the stations. Alimosho will definitely have a loading station. The volume of refuse generated on Lagos Island alone is more than the refuse from almost five or six states in the country at a time. The problem of waste management in Alimosho is largely attributed to the
attitude of people, and not that the refuse generated cannot be handled.”

On the safety of the highway managers, Oresanya lamented the disturbing case of hit-and-run accidents, though acknowledged the incidents had reduced in the last one year due to different measures adopted.
