PoliticsRe: If Nigeria Is So Rich, Why Are Nigerians So Poor? by ektbear: 2:49am On Apr 14, 2012
Come on! No one is saying that agric is the only idea for escaping poverty. Agric is an area of opportunity that is not getting enough attention. Population control cannot be ignored as well.
In a nutshell, I want you to realize that the people making a killing off agric tend to be big farmers. Rich, giant corporations with huge farms.

Making life more pleasant/smooth for big industrial farmers...well I'm not sure how that useful that is at least from an employment/job creation perspective. And by "I'm not sure", what I really mean is that it isn't useful at all.

If you want to fix poverty, fix electricity so that we can industrialize and create jobs.
PoliticsRe: If Nigeria Is So Rich, Why Are Nigerians So Poor? by ektbear: 2:46am On Apr 14, 2012
shymmex: So, how does investing in the oil sector - which is already thriving by the way - equate to industrialization??
Who is doing the investing? Where is this supposed $1 billion mentioned coming from?
PoliticsRe: If Nigeria Is So Rich, Why Are Nigerians So Poor? by ektbear: 2:45am On Apr 14, 2012
shymmex: I don't care about NUMBERS - I only deal with PRACTICALITY. Any one can just put numbers out there for all I care.
And that in a nutshell is why some countries remain poor, and other escape poverty.

Continue not caring about the numbers.
PoliticsRe: PDP Vows To Dislodge ACN From Southwest. Dream Of The Century! by ektbear: 2:44am On Apr 14, 2012
Well, asking what they've done is an entirely different question from, "on what basis were they more desirable a priori?"

DK seems to have thoroughly addressed the latter question. It seems that you should concede this point if you want him to address the next question...

Nobody likes pillar-to-post sort of arguments where you demolish a person's point, then they jump to the next w/o conceding the previous..
PoliticsRe: If Nigeria Is So Rich, Why Are Nigerians So Poor? by ektbear: 2:39am On Apr 14, 2012
When I say quick wins, I am speaking in relative terms. I believe half of that $1 billion would generate positive results if spent on the Agric sector (specifically Tomato production and tomato paste factories) quicker than what the same amount would generate in exploratory activities which are not guaranteed to yield any positive results.

Once again, we are the worlds largest importer of tomato paste for goodness sake. We have a ready market for the product, we have the land to produce the tomatoes - why not agressively go after the quick win?
Who is spending this $1 billion? Nigeria, or the oil companies? Once again, you are arguing based upon the assumption that it is out of Nigeria's pocket this money is coming from.

Is this accurate? If so, provide some evidence that Nigeria is spending this much (rather than it actually being Shell spending the money on exploration.)

Then show that it is a bad investment relative to tomato production.

Now, with which electricity do you plan on powering this proposed tomato paste factory?
PoliticsRe: If Nigeria Is So Rich, Why Are Nigerians So Poor? by ektbear: 2:37am On Apr 14, 2012
More to the point...if you plan on leaving poverty through agric, then you'd better also find a way to reduce the population of the country to 5 million people or something, lol.

Long story short, if agric is the only idea you have for escaping poverty, prepare to remain a third world nation for the next several hundred years...

Industrialization is the answer, not really agric.

Agric is a game for rich folks anyways, not the poor masses (at least if they want to really make a killing from it)
PoliticsRe: If Nigeria Is So Rich, Why Are Nigerians So Poor? by ektbear: 2:34am On Apr 14, 2012
Which kyn mindless "GBAM" be this? undecided

So without seeing ANY numbers, ANY plans for the two choices, anything at all, you've concluded that one is better than the other?
PoliticsRe: If Nigeria Is So Rich, Why Are Nigerians So Poor? by ektbear: 2:26am On Apr 14, 2012
I don't think there are any real quick wins.

Nothing good comes easy...anyone expecting Nigeria to be turned around in a day is fooling themselves.

So what is your argument for why the $1 billion spent oil exploration is a bad idea?

What would you do with the money, if it were you?

Speaking of which...who is spending the money? Nigeria or the oil companies? To my knowledge, typically it is the latter who spends money on exploration..
PoliticsRe: PDP Vows To Dislodge ACN From Southwest. Dream Of The Century! by ektbear: 2:24am On Apr 14, 2012
I would be very happy if the PDP could present a credible alternative to the ACN. It is better to have several options to choose from rather than one mediocre one (ACN) and one absolutely terrible one (PDP).

But if you have a track record of trotting out failures, then it will be hard for people to take you seriously.
PoliticsRe: PDP Vows To Dislodge ACN From Southwest. Dream Of The Century! by ektbear: 2:22am On Apr 14, 2012
DKs point is pretty simple.

The ACN candidates have had better resumes than the PDP ones, at least as of the last cycle.

Without further information, no rational person will choose the person with the less impressive resume over the person with the better one.

And the natural question is, why does the PDP continue running scrubs for important roles?

Are there no men of talent in the PDP? No men who have been successful in their previous careers before running for governorship?
PoliticsRe: If Nigeria Is So Rich, Why Are Nigerians So Poor? by ektbear: 2:20am On Apr 14, 2012
Lmao at "slowly getting it."

There is nothing revelatory about this.

Like, most of us know that Nigeria is not a rich country, lol.

The question is, how does one turn a poor country into a wealthier one? How does one create wealth?

Reasoning based on false assumptions.

Nigeria is not rich...it is poor

afam4eva: They're competitors who are trying to wrestle for space in the international space. Take for instance, is the president of the english premiership is been elected and a candidate from chelsea and another one from Wigan athletic are the forerunners, who do you think Manchester united will go for? You guessed right.
Alas...not everything can be reduced to EPL analogies sad
PoliticsRe: Russia Backs US Nominee Kim For World Bank Presidency by ektbear: 12:09am On Apr 14, 2012
afam4eva: Then, they're not ready to replace the US as the new world power. Why can't they take a cue from China.
Lmao.

How is that even possible? Negative population growth country, poor, low gdp growth.

As of the fall of the Soviet Union, it should have been clear that the US and even the Soviet Union are not mates. Talk less of Russia..
PoliticsRe: Russia Backs US Nominee Kim For World Bank Presidency by ektbear: 12:07am On Apr 14, 2012
afam4eva: Russia will have to review it's foreign policy. How can they rally behind a US nominee. they should be doing the direct opposite of the US.
Why?

I also don't understand how you guys had random people who have absolutely no posting history on this Politics forum, who for all we know are trolls controll (like the pun?) the process.

Presumably you should choose as referee someone who is a known quantity, but not interested in the role..

Just because someone proposes a good idea doesn't mean that they are qualified to execute it, basically
PoliticsRe: RE: Are Ona Kakanfo Election. It's A Set Up. Vote It Down. by ektbear: 4:23am On Apr 13, 2012
I have never understood the concept of having anonymous voting on NL as a whole for something like this.

Either have it on a Yoruba website, or make it PUBLIC voting.

There in my opinion is nothing necessarily wrong with the concept...just the execution was quite poor.
PoliticsRe: Almajiri Project An Exercise In Futility – Shehu Sani by ektbear: 9:25pm On Apr 12, 2012
None of this makes any sense to me.

Rather than encouraging people to go to regular schools that teach useful things, they are encouraging more almajiris. Or what else will an almajiri school but more almajiris?

This is putting lipstick on a pig..

At best replacing decreased production from the militancy days.

So if you compared to the period before 2-3 years ago, little or no growth in production over that time period...

Anyway, the point is that there are fundamental reasons why the oil sector cannot be the engine of growth of the economy. Some of which I've already stated, but others which are also kind of obvious

And in principle there is nothing wrong with stitching together/modifying existing ready-made solutions, so long as:

a) you understand what is going on
b) you aren't violating any copyright

Isn't only limited to Mumbai.
PoliticsRe: Nigeria’s Economy Is The Third Fastest Growing In The World by ektbear: 3:55pm On Apr 12, 2012
Nah. Makes sense that oil isn't growing. Isn't as if production is increasing (and really, there are limits to how much it could anyway due to OPEC), or additional major value is being added down the chain.

If anything, Nigeria is probably producing less oil than its peak (speaking of which what was its peak production? 2.5 mil?)
PoliticsRe: Nigeria’s Economy Is The Third Fastest Growing In The World by ektbear: 3:36pm On Apr 12, 2012
Kobojunkie: Yep, since the second/third quarter of 2009, Nigeria has been recorded quarterly growth rates between 7 and 8 %, attributed mostly to increase in oil production. Many of the other sectors have been experienced the same level of increase in that time though.
Can't you guys read the OP huh huh The main said the oil sector has been relatively flat recently, and in fact that it is the non-oil sector which is growing most rapidly.....

We recorded a GDP growth of 7.68 per cent in real terms and this is largely due to growth in the non-oil sector.

“The previous year, 2010, the GDP growth was 8.4 per cent but last year, it dropped to 7.68 per cent because we had a negative growth in the oil sector. So, it means that the non-oil sector is actually resilient and strong enough to carry the economy forward with or without the oil sector.
PoliticsRe: Nigeria’s Economy Is The Third Fastest Growing In The World by ektbear: 3:33pm On Apr 12, 2012
AjanleKoko: The report says Nigeria grew at 7.68% last year. From what I see online, e.g. here, that doesn't even put us in the Top Ten. But it is still better than that of, say, Germany, a First World Nation, which puts its GDP growth forecast at 1.8%..
Well of course Nigeria will be growing faster than Germany. One is an already fully industrialized, first-world country, the other is effectively preindustrial.

The only high GDP growth rate first world country to my knowledge is Singapore...
PoliticsRe: Picture Of President GEJ With Students Of The New Almajiri School In Sokoto by ektbear: 9:14am On Apr 12, 2012
Dede1: @POST

This is one of the most ridiculous and hopeless thing GEJ has ever done. Federal government should be building schools for all Nigerians not religious schools for Mohammedans. If Islamic sects want to build Almajiri schools, it should do so with money from donations. This is how idiotic born to rule originates. All almajiri schools teach these kids is to hate non-Muslims.

I hate Nigeria with passion and would not do anything to help the cesspit.
