It isn't tribalism you'd be dealing with, it would be xenophobia. These are two separate issues. No country on earth where you can rapidly change the demographics without facing opposition. Anyway, do as you wish, your plan not mine. My plan is to build up my homeland, not run away from it. |
The Ijaw man has grown very powerful in Nigeria, in a short period of time. Quite impressive. |
This article supports Abagworo's pov and expands on it: http://tribune.com.ng/sun/index.php/news/3078-how-jonathan-shunned-ss-govs-aide-over-kuku |
Obiagu1:How do you propose becoming more in # than them? Will they not notice large numbers of immigrants and react poorly? They are not fools. You should read up on the Igbo experience in Cameroon and how they responded. We'll relocate every industry we have in Nigeria and only come to Nigeria to sell our products.I feel you on both of the latter points, man ![]() I think the best bet is to peacefully partition Nigeria. Let everyone go their own separate way. More realistic than trying to take over Gabon, imo. |
kcjazz:The language is not the issue, imo. Googling around a bit, there are lots of sectors (farming, trade) which could be entered, which the locals don't have much interest in. The problem is, when you move lots of your own coethnics into a country, the natives get restless and unhappy. And even if you managed to do this w/o pissing them off, the existing leadership has a powerful ally (France). Language imo is pretty much irrelevant, French is not a big deal to learn. |
@Obiagu1: I read up on Gabon after you mentioned it. Pretty interesting country. Seems to be a puppet of France though. So not clear to me that it would be so easy to gain dominion over it, even ignoring internal opposition. |
Why do they oppose this Kuku fellow? |
I love how the comments on that article owned this mumu pastor. Silly man! |
SEFAGO: ![]() I dunno, I grew up in a place with lots of Nigerians. So not clear. Also, you implication that humility is not Nigerian does you and Nigerians a disservice, I think ![]() |
manny4life:It would suck if it were my ONLY son. I'd slap that boy silly if so! I need heirs of some sort, male grandchildren. But assuming I have some other sons, not the end of the world. Plus I could use my son's gayness as an excuse to practice polygamy! Who would judge me? "Eku_bear is suffering so much, his first born son is gay. Maybe a 2nd and 3rd wife would cheer him up. . . " |
@Sefago: So in short, no harassment if you practice it privately? That doesn't sound like full rights to me. Gays pretty much everywhere in the world don't get trouble, so long as they are discreet. And a quick skim of that article doesn't indicate any increased rights. Not sure if your hypothesis is supported by that article. |
tensor777:But I assume that if all that fails, you'd eventually come to accept him and get over it? And throughout the process, he would not lose your love? For me, my son is my son. He'd still get my unconditional love, even if he were gay. |
fstranger1:That video cracked me up first time I saw it. . . was totally unexpected ![]() |
If you think gays will ever get their rights in countries like Saudi, you have another thing coming ![]() Even slavery is not fully eliminated in the world. Not to talk of women's rights. . . I do agree that they'll get most of their rights in the Western world, though. |
So let me ask you this, @tensor777. Hypothetical situation. You have a son. And not an adopted son, your flesh and blood. In fact, he looks like a carbon copy of you. He turns 20. He tells you he is gay. How do you respond? |
fstranger1:I used to be the type of person who would give money to homeless people. Not all the time, but randomly. But after my latest trip to Nigeria, I've resolved never to do this again. America truly is the land of milk and honey. If you are suffering here or doing poorly here as a native-born American citizen with no health issues, then something is wrong with you ![]() Seeing these dudes begging on the streets and then comparing it with how people struggle in naija just pissed me off. |
yup. you just need to interact with them to know that they are regular human beings like us. lol why should they be criminalized for their sexual orientation. sefago is fstranger. . . in the closet. i'm waiting for him to come out.
Is homosexuality even a worse "sin" than lying? I thought all sins were supposed to be equally bad. Anyway, personally at this point I don't give a damn. It doesn't affect me or my life, family, etc in any way. So why should I be so opposed to gays? |
tensor777:To be honest, it isn't like I've gotten that close to any of them to entrust them with those things. None of my closest friends are gay (at least, as far as I know.) But if a gay person became one of my closest friends? For example, this Indian guy in my lab who I strongly suspect is gay and who is a friend of mine? Absolutely, yes. It isn't like he will r.a.pe or brainwash my future son, would he? ![]() |
SEFAGO:It wasn't the professors. It was interacting with gay people and realizing that a lot of them are good folk. One of the gay dudes who I went to college with, he wasn't even effeminate. Liked playing basketball, pretty decent at it. Liked the sorts of things most normal, red-blooded American males like. . . with one exception ![]() I don't get your comment about "would never trust." Why are they less trustworthy than straight people, in your opinion? |
Katsumoto:Indeed. Who can be mad at less competition for beautiful women? I certainly have no incentive to fight against the rights of gay men for this very reason ![]() Lesbians who are hot, otoh. . . that is a different story. |
tensor777:Mine was the same. I was virulently homophobic even as of 6-7 years ago. But as I met more gay people, I realized that they aren't evil, a threat, etc. Just people with a different way of life. |
@EzeUche_: This is something I've never understood. It seems so shortsighted to me. . . not even being materialistic about things that have a good chance of lasting for a long time (real estate, stock, bonds, etc), but Jordans ![]() |
tensor, dude. . . I'm a bit surprised. You are one of the last persons that I'd think was a homophobe on this forum. |
This article posted by @Abagworo: http://www.stratfor.com/analysis/20090316_nigerias_mend_different_militant_movement Eyeopening. Thanks a lot for posting it. |
Orikinla:This Nigeria. . . smh |
@fstranger1: I've always wondered about this. Girls in naija are way hotter than the naija girls here in the US. Is the weather or diet. . . ? Some sort of selection bias? Not sure. |
SEFAGO:From what I've seen, MBB is not something you do forever. You ideally exit after 4 years to be VP at some major company, or go work for private equity, bank, a hedge fund, etc. The exit opportunities are pretty stellar, and I think unmatched by most other gigs one can likely do. Someone I know exited after just 2 years to go work in naija for a bank. I'm sure they got paid. . . and knowing naija it wouldn't even be hard work. |
Lol. I sort of want to do my youth service lecturing at a university for one year. The problem is that it will be taking away an entire year of prime earnings ![]() I'm not sure how much you'll be able to improve the system by yourself, btw. And there isn't anything wrong with a lecturer not having a PhD, to be quite honest. I TAed some classes in undergrad, and in at least one of them I was way better a teacher than the professor. PhD is not a pre-req for being a good instructor. Researcher, probably so. |
SEFAGO:Lol, funny you mention consulting. This is actually their interview cycle for summer internships. Anyway, it isn't a bad thing to do, the salary is solid ($180kish for fresh MBAs or PhD grads), but the travel is just insane. I don't mind doing that for a short period of time, but not forever. And of course, the money isn't as good as banking and finance. My current tentative plan is to hopefully snag a consulting internship this summer just to learn about the field a bit, then hopefully move into banking when I finish school. As for me I plan to do a post-doc then go and teach at Unilag. So no fame and glory and money for me, but contributing to the development of my countrymen.Sounds like a waste of your talent and earnings potential, imo But your patriotism is admirable. |
SEFAGO:I basically thought the same way you did until I went to a couple info sessions this week. For the small boutique firm, the trader I was talking to has a PhD in Chemistry. Chinese guy, did some nanoscience stuff. Absolutely no business background, just extremely smart and good at math. The other info session was at a major bulge bracket firm. And as you say, they were mostly interested in hiring PhDs as quants, not traders. Still, it doesn't look like you'd necessarily be programming all day at this firm. And they have a good 3 month training program, too. I'm beginning to think that the best thing to do is to get your foot in the door. Just make sure it isn't something where you are a code monkey. |
Right. But who knows, with brains and achievements like that he might be able to invent some new, profitable esoteric trading method and impress folks enough to spin off a brand new hedge fund for himself.
This I think is the holy grail Starting the next SAC Capital, Blackstone. . . man, that would be sweet. |
Don't feel sorry for him, dude will probably join a hedge fund and buy a whole physics department before he's 30
Hrm, but you can get some of these wall street jobs straight out of college, if that is what you want to do. No point getting the PhD when you can just enter the field directly (at least, in theory.) |
